Madrid-based Zeta Studios, producer of Netflix phenomenon “Elite,” is set to co-produce “Picadero,” a neo-noir six-part detective series already set up at Colombia’s Fidelio Films, one of the highest-flying companies in Latin America, and fast-emerging Barcelona-based Amor y Lujo, whose co-founder Almudena Monzú created “Picadero.”

Isabel Coixet, one of Spain’s greatest modern filmmakers is attached to direct episodes of the series. Her movies take in “My Life Without Me,” with Sarah Polley, “The Secret Life of Words,” starring Polley and Tim Robbins, and “The Bookshop,” toplining Emily Mortimer.

Monzu and Amor y Lujo co-founder and producer Andrea H. Catalá will pitch the series at next week’s Series Mania Forum on Aug. 30.

Colombia’s Fidelio, one of the fastest growing companies in Latin America, has made its third big unveil at Spain’s Conecta Fiction, revealing this time round a multi-title co-development alliance for Spain and Latin America with Barcelona-based Amor y Lujo, headed by Andrea H. Catalá, Javi Ferreiro y Almudena Monzú.

First title up is “Picadero” a neo noir series created by Spanish scriptwriter and story editor Almudena Monzú, co-founder of the Barcelona-based Amor y Lujo, which she launched in 2016 with Venezuelan producer-director Andrea H. Catalá. Over the last few years. it has been providing production services, while building up its own project portfolio.

“Picadero” is a detective thriller that draws inspiration from Spanish film director Iciar Bollaín’s “Mataharis” and great detective classics.

Amazon Studios has picked up the rights to “The Boy From Medellín,” a documentary about Colombian musician J Balvin that’s directed by Matthew Heineman and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The film is a deep-dive into the life of Balvin and how he rose to stardom in his home of Colombia, all leading up to a massive concert he would perform in Medellín, Colombia. No release date has been set.

“Representing my country, my city and Latin culture globally is a lifelong pursuit and I’m so proud to be a son of Medellín. I’m honored to be able to tell my story in this beautiful way and working with Matthew on this project was an incredible experience. Amazon Studios has picked up worldwide rights to Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) selection The Boy From Medellin about Reggaeton superstar J Balvin as the platform continues to grow its Latin American audience.

Matthew Heineman’s documentary follows the Latin Grammy-winner in the run-up to the biggest concert of his life – a sold-out performance in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia.

The film shot in Colombia and New York and is fully financed by Endeavor Content and produced by Our Time Projects and Sb Projects. Amazon Studios brokered the deal with Endeavor Content.

Finalists to Conecta Fiction Reboot’s four pitching categories were unveiled Monday at the opening virtual session of the 4th Latin America-Europe TV co-production forum in Pamplona, Spain. Forced online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the on-site edition returns to Pamplona’s Baluarte Congress Center over Sept. 2-3.

Conecta Fiction director Géraldine Gonard hosted the opening ceremony at which María Chivite, President of Navarre, sent a video greeting where she reiterated her steadfast support for the industry.

All finalists will be invited to present their projects in person in September. Among the two key international categories, Pitch CoPro Series and Pitch Short-Form Series, are projects from the likes of Madrid-based Morena Films (“The Year of the Rat”), which has made more than 50 features and worked with a host of notable directors, including Oliver Stone, Asghar Farhadi, Icíar Bollaín, Steven Soderbergh, Carlos Saura and Pablo Trapero.

Guadalajara, Mexico — Colombia’s Fidelio Films has had a week to remember at this year’s Guadalajara Intl. Film Festival (Ficg) as its full slate of TV and film projects has impressed in a number of sections.

The company’s feature film “The Life and Death of Espíritu Perdomo” won the “El Taller” post-production prize and the Cinema226 development, co-production, production and promotion prizes at the Co-production Meeting for feature films, its series “Tenebris” is pitching at the first-ever Ficg TV Pitchbox, and its shopping the first season of another series, “Tiburon Island,” which won the Mexican Film Institute (Imcine) development grant for television series last year and received a TV Pitchbox special mention.

“Tenebris” was created by David Figueroa García and Mauricio Leiva Cock, and is produced by Mauro Mueller and Juan Diego Villegas from Fidelio Films. The show’s eight hour-long episodes will be directed by Ed Sánchez.
