Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken’s Grotesquerie started in a rather unassuming fashion, but it was clear that a palpable darkness was brewing under the surface of its characters and setting, like a gaping chasm to Hell that could swallow the world at any moment. There’s been an emphasis on order ruling over chaos – particularly in the form of jigsaw puzzles – right from Grotesquerie’s first episode. Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) and the rest of her family would innocently solve puzzles all season while she simultaneously tries to put together the pieces of a grander serial killer mystery where Lois can’t see the forest for the trees. To Grotesquerie’s credit, it’s a series that’s routinely kept its audience guessing regarding how all these pieces possibly fit together and what the finished picture is supposed to look like. Grotesquerie certainly hasn’t been...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Doctor Odyssey” Episode 4.
“Doctor Odyssey” just got a hot new chef, one that will surely bring testy waters for the nurses aboard.
Episode 4, titled “Wellness Week,” followed as Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team dealt with shenanigans from the alternative medicine community, who boarded the ship for the week led by guest stars Amy Sedaris, Margaret Cho and Kate Berlant. The episode also introduced chef Vivian Montgomery (Laura Harrier), a reality TV show winner who was working for Sedaris’ character and quickly sparked a connection with nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale).
“Vivian is a wonderful character and she’s joined us for the foreseeable future — I don’t know how long. I’m not allowed to say — but it’s lovely,” Teale told TheWrap of his character’s new love interest. “There’s something for Tristan’s logical and loving mind to pursue.

Ryan Murphy can’t stop winning this year. “American Horror Stories” hit No. 1 on Hulu’s Top 15 Today the week of its debut, making it the eighth Murphy show to hit dominate viewership in 2024.
“It’s like having eight children and they all got accepted to college,” Murphy told TheWrap. “I’m like, ‘Ok, well, I did my job.’ It feels good.”
It’s an unprecedented winning streak that started in January with the star-studded “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” from Murphy, Jaffe Cohen and Michael Zam, a series that was nominated for 10 Emmys and won for Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. It was then followed by the second half of “American Horror Story: Delicate” in April, a season that was showrun by Halley Feiffer and led by Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian. Both jumped to the No. 1 spot on Hulu’s Top 15 list after their premieres.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Grotesquerie” Episode 7.
“Grotesquerie” star Micaela Diamond always knew Episode 7 was going to be a challenge. Even by the wild standards of this FX show from Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, “Unplugged” is on an entirely different level.
“Episode 7 is like if ‘Fatal Attraction’ was directed by Luis Buñuel except it’s ‘Grotesquerie’ and Max Winkler is just a genius,” Diamond told TheWrap of the game-changing installment.
After six episodes spent investigating a serial killer known only as Grotesquerie, Lois (Niecy Nash-Betts) finally uncovered that the killer was none other than Father Charlie (Nicholas Alexander Chavez). As everyone around her celebrated, Lois couldn’t shake the feeling that the case hadn’t been fully solved. That’s when she zeroed in on her partner in solving the crimes, Sister Megan (Diamond). After the first six episodes, you would be forgiven for thinking “Grotesquerie” is just another Ryan Murphy show — a thriller filled with larger-than-life characters, brilliant actors and lovingly rendered horror. But like “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story” and “Pose” before it, “Grotesquerie” marks a huge creative swing for the acclaimed showrunner. And it all comes down to Episode 7’s big twist.
“I’ve never done anything that worked out in advance, that meticulously designed,” series co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy told TheWrap. “It was so fun to do.”
It’s a fitting addition for a fall that marks Murphy’s official return to FX under its new parent company, Disney.

Ryan Murphy’s latest network offering, Doctor Odyssey, brings viewers into the well-loved world of medical professionals through a unique lens, as this medical team works and lives on a cruise ship.
The ABC medical drama — created by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken — stars Joshua Jackson as Max, luxury cruise ship The Odyssey’s newest and seemingly overqualified doctor. Max joins the cruise’s two long-time, skeptical nurses on the medical team, Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale).
When Doctor Odyssey was first announced, the premise of American Horror Story mastermind Murphy’s next series was largely kept under wraps. Would there be a twist in store? Would the cruise ship be not what it seems? Not until the trailer dropped last month did viewers get a synopsis and first look, and begin to understand what the prolific showrunner really had in store. Exclusive: Doctor Odyssey‘s maiden voyage seems to be going swimmingly.
Ryan Murphy’s latest procedural set sail on ABC last week and, so far, the premiere episode has tallied 13.6M cross-platform viewers in its first week, Disney says. That’s an impressive 230% increase over the episode’s live + same-day audience of 4.13M.
This is a monster start for Doctor Odyssey. While most broadcast series grow their audiences quite significantly in the week after they air, once episodes become available on streaming, it is fairly rare for an episode to average 10M viewers in that time frame — let alone blow right past it.
Within three days of viewing, the cruise ship drama had already delivered 7.59M viewers, making it ABC’s best drama premiere in four years, according to Disney. And after its first full day on Hulu, it was No. 1 on the streamer’s Top 15 Today list, and it has remained there since.

Sarah Paulson is one of the stars of Hulu’s All’s Fair, Ryan Murphy’s new legal series, which also stars Kim Kardashian.
The Ratched star appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday, October 2, to tease viewers about the upcoming show.
“All I can tease about it — I read the first two scripts — is that it’s going to be incredibly sexy, it’s going to be really fun, and there’s already a yummy text chain that’s happening with all of us girls that’s really fun,” Paulson said.
Murphy describes All’s Fair as “a high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural.” The legal drama, penned by Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, is set in an all-female law firm.
The cast of All’s Fair also includes Glenn Close, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Naomi Watts. Kardashian, Paulson, Nash, and Watts will also be the executive producers.

We got to meet Detective Lois Tryon during last week's two-episode premiere of FX's Grotesquerie, and this week continues the investigation. The horror series is created by Ryan Murphy, Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, following a series of murders that are committed in a small town. There’s no end to surprises when it comes to “Grotesquerie,” FX’s latest series from creators Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. But one of the serial killer drama’s biggest and buzziest shocks has been a casting decision. “Grotesquerie” will mark the first major acting role for Travis Kelce.
This is far from the first time Murphy has welcomed a talent from another realm into his warped worlds. “American Horror Story: Delicate” starred Kim Kardashian in her first major starring role in a scripted series, and model Kaia Gerber’s first major acting role was in “American Horror Stories.” And Lady Gaga, now an acting Oscar nominee and star of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” got her first leading role on ‘American Horror Story: Hotel.”
Here’s everything we know about Kelce’s big role in this bloody show.

One of the most secretive shows of recent memory, Grotesquerie made its debut on FX on September 25. The first two episodes play into the Ryan Murphy style of horror. Not only does it feature highly sexual storytelling, but the violence proves wildly deranged. Earlier in the week, FandomWire attended a press conference with the cast and Ryan Murphy to dig deeper into Grotesquerie and its origins.

The series has been shrouded in secret, so many present wanted to hear more about its origins and themes. Ryan Murphy jumped in early. “I would call Grotesquerie a horror, thriller, drama, in that order. One of the things I also love is that it’s following a serial killer; it’s procedural. “Welcome aboard The Odyssey.”
On Wednesday, Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken asked audiences to investigate the macabre with their FX horror series, “Grotesquerie.” Shifting gears towards the more pleasant side of humanity, the same series creators premiered a new medical drama the following night called “Doctor Odyssey.” Starring Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, his Yale-educated doctor is tasked with handling emergency medical cases aboard a luxury cruise ship.
In the opening few minutes of the show’s premiere, Dr. Bankman is introduced getting dressed for his first day of work to the tune of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’.” Taking on a new job can often be an intimidating endeavor, but this doctor likes to wear Hawaiian shirts, and you just know he’s easygoing. Post-covid, he traverses the next phase of his life by boarding The Odyssey, a beautifully designed and cultured cruise liner filled with honeymooners and vacationing retirees.

Ryan Murphy has had a hand in creating a string of very successful shows over the years. His new Doctor Odyssey show has been sandwiched between two very popular ABC shows, 9-1-1 and Grey's Anatomy. Is Doctor Odyssey sure to be a hit, or could it still flop? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.

Branding is central to Ryan Murphy’s TV empire, but the brand names themselves can often feel a little fungible.
Take Murphy’s output in this current two-week period: FX’s American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez absolutely could have been renamed Hernandez: Monster — The Aaron Hernandez Story. Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story probably could have been Feud: The Menendez Family. I haven’t seen ABC’s Doctor Odyssey, but all promotion indicates that it’s 9-1-1: Love Boat.
On that shifting scale, FX’s Grotesquerie could easily have had the American Horror Story name appended in front of it. With hints of Cult, Coven and Asylum immediately evident, it looks to take almost an everything bagel approach to the signatures of that series.
After only two episodes (none were made available for critics ahead of the premiere), it’s too early to tell...

“Evil has always existed in the world.”
As summer comes to a close and autumn gets into full swing, it’s typically the time of year when Spooky Season materializes. This year, however, television is bringing audiences a Murphy Fall as megaproducer and showrunner Ryan Murphy appears to be pumping out new shows every week this month. In addition to “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” currently airing on FX, there’s a bloodbath taking place on Netflix with “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and a new medical drama starring Joshua Jackson called “Doctor Odyssey” getting ready to set sail on ABC.
But first, Murphy is welcomed back to the horror genre by unveiling the limited series “Grotesquerie,” which debuted on FX Wednesday with a two-episode premiere event.

‘Grotesquerie’ channels Se7en, Hannibal, Longlegs, and religious serial killer thrillers in a compelling two-handed murder mystery.
“The end is near.”
Grotesquerie, for all intents and purposes, is Season 13 of American Horror Story, only it’s operating under an original title because the AHS brand has become so tainted. It honestly feels like Grotesquerie might have been developed as a new American Horror Story season, only for the series to pivot mid-production when they realized that this might be a cut above what AHS has been routinely turning out for the past few years. At this point, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Grotesquerie decides to become an anthology horror series of its own and basically turn into the new American Horror Story if it turns out to be a success and connect with audiences.
The biggest surprise about Grotesquerie is that it’s actually good. It bears a lot...

The newest horror show to debut this week is FX on Hulu's Grotesquerie, created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken. As we head into October and horror fans are looking to get their fix ahead of Halloween, I'm sure I wasn't alone in tuning in for the first two episodes which premiered on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The premise is interesting enough, but will this murder mystery hold our attention all season long? I'm unsure.
Grotesquerie episode 1 introduces us to our protagonist, Detective Lois Tryon, a functioning alcoholic living with her daughter whose estranged husband is in a coma. As a series of murders are committed in her town, she looks to an unlikely place for help: a nun journalist. Grotesquerie episode 2 sees them continue to work together as more people are killed and they find out the name of the murderer.
Warning: Major spoilers for Grotesquerie episode 2 are below.

Actor Nicholas Chavez takes on the role of a conflicted priest in the new FX series “Grotesquerie.” The show premieres on September 25 and follows Detective Lois Tryon and Sister Megan as they investigate gruesome murders in their small town. Chavez portrays Father Charlie Mayhew, whose internal struggles often disagree with how he presents himself.
In his latest role, Chavez explores different challenges than in previous work. He recently starred as Lyle Menendez in the Netflix series “Monsters.” That part required honoring true events, while Father Charlie allows more creative freedom. “I could follow my instincts and let the unique world Ryan Murphy created inspire me,” Chavez said.
The actor praised Murphy for constantly providing feedback and precision in developing characters. He described working with Murphy as “really special” and “unique.” Father Charlie faces a difficult internal battle that also makes him a fascinating character, according to Chavez. “The most challenging...

Spooky season has begun and if you're looking for a new horror series to check out, look no further than Grotesquerie. Created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the FX on Hulu show just debuted tonight, Sept. 25, with two new episodes. Though this isn't American Horror Story, you can still bet on the same thrills and kills with Grotesquerie. The show follows a detective and a nun who team up to try and solve a series of murders in their small town.
Warning: Major spoilers for Grotesquerie episode 1 are below.
The episode opens up by introducing us to our protagonist, Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) who is woken up from a nightmare. An empty liquor bottle and cigarette butts are nearby, suggesting to us viewers pretty early on what her vices are. She gets a phone call about murders that were just committed and she promptly heads to the scene.

It’s not often that playing an intense priest in a town haunted by a religiously motivated serial killer would be seen as a treat. But after coming off “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” that was the case for “Grotesquerie” star Nicholas Chavez.
“Honestly, I would say that Father Charlie was easier to channel because I was able to just be impulsive, follow my instincts, go down a rabbit hole and allow myself to be inspired by the texture and the feel of the world around me that Ryan [Murphy] created,” Chavez told TheWrap during a press day for “Grotesquerie.”
In the widely-watched Netflix original, Chavez plays Lyle Menendez, the more vocal of the two brothers who were convicted and incarcerated for murdering his parents, José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny). Chavez’s performance has been widely praised in the divisive series. The crime drama was filmed...

Ryan Murphy’s next project of spooky season “Grotesquerie” premieres on FX Wednesday night. A series of gruesome crimes have plagued a small community in the 10-episode drama, and it’s up to Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) to solve them.
However, Lois starts to feel that these crimes are eerily personal. Unsure where to start, the detective accepts the help of Sister Megan (Michaela Diamond), a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. The two piece together clues, but as more evidence arises they find themselves more confused than before.
Travis Kelce is set to guest star in the series in a role written specifically for him. And “Monsters” standout Nicholas Alexander Chavez will play Father Charlie, head priest at the Catholic Guardian.
The series was written and created by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. The trio executive produced the show alongside Max Winkler, Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance,...

While filming a series as grim as the new FX drama “Grotesquerie,” it helps to have someone like star Niecy Nash-Betts cut the tension once in a while. Otherwise, things can get dicey, spending all day filming bloodied bodies posed in perverted Biblical poses.
“There is that shock factor when you first walk in,” she said in an interview with Variety. “After that, you say, ‘I’ve got to tell some jokes to try to keep this crew up all day.’ After all, we’re going to be standing in all of this blood and guts for the next 12 hours.”
Although Nash-Betts has a gifted comedy voice, she’s playing against type in “Grotesquerie” as Detective Lois Tryon, a troubled alcoholic pursuing a serial killer with a penchant for Biblical carnage. To help her unravel the religious clues, she teams with reporter and nun, Sister Megan Duval (Micaela Diamond) — all...

When asked what drew them to “Grotesquerie,” actors Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance, Raven Goodwin, Nicholas Chavez and Micaela Diamond all had the same answer: Ryan Murphy.
“He called and said, ‘Courtney, I don’t have the character down yet, but I know where I want to go. I need you to sign on.’ I said, ‘Ok, let me call some people,’ because I was supposed to do something else,” Vance, who previously worked with the super producer on “The People v. Oj Simpson: American Crime Story,” told TheWrap. “It’s really not hard to [say yes] when he calls because you know where you’re going to go.”
In many ways, “Grotesquerie” shares some of its DNA with “American Horror Story.” A complete work of fiction unlike other recently released Murphy-produced projects like “American Sports Story” and “Monsters,” the horror drama takes place in a small town that’s being terrorized by a serial killer.
