Jason Kim worked as an interpreter in the Korean Air Force before joining Korea’s movie distribution company, Showbox. Before that, he studied international politics at Georgetown University in the United States. Making films had always been his passion which resulted in him making “Goodbye My Sunshine” (2010) and “Koala” (2013). However, with the action comedy, “Midnight Runners” (2017) starring Park Seo-joon, he finally scored a huge hit in Korea. “The Divine Fury” (2019), a horror thriller, was a local box office failure. In 2023, Kim then moved on to do the Netflix action drama TV series “Bloodhounds”.

The Netflix movie Officer Black Belt might seem like it’s an action comedy about martial arts, like other films in the genre like Kung-Fu Panda or The Karate Kid, but it’s actually a crime thriller about police officers in Seoul which follows Police Officer Kim Sun Min and Martial Arts Officer Jung-do-ssi as they team up to take down dangerous criminals across the city. In the cast and character guide of Officer Black Belt, I am going to explore the skin of these two officers and a whole bunch of other folks with whom they came in contact throughout the film.

I’ve been a massive fan of Kim Woo-Bin since The Heirs way back when. Sure, we all love a good bad boy, but soon I discovered his film Twenty, which completely shattered that image and made him one of the top Korean actors in my eyes back in the day (I’m talking a decade ago). The model-turned-actor is a gem, especially when playing roles that are more rooted and, for the lack of a better word, kind. And I think that’s the whole basis of Officer Black Belt. The film opens with a man in his mid-late twenties expressing his love for sports and how it’s the one thing that makes him truly happy. So it seems a bit odd when we realize that though he’s basically got the Midas touch when it comes to any sport he plays, his regular job is delivering chicken for his dad’s shop.

Right from his debut feature “Runaway” in 1995, Kim Sung-su has established two things vehemently: he can work with big stars and he can work on a big budget quite effectively. Starting with a then-young but nonetheless impressive Lee Byung-hun, he has since gone on to work with the likes of Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, Hwang Jung-min and even Zhang Ziyi in a rare Korean production appearance. Since his last two works, he has also established that he is also adept at working with an ensemble cast, with both “The Flu” and the highly impressive “Asura: The City of Madness” having an extensive and impressive cast-list. Seven years since “Asura: The City of Madness”, Kim returns to the big screen and with a couple actors he has worked with for “12.12: The Day”, a political thriller based on recent Korean history.

"It's nice to meet you, monster. I'm a monster, too." Oh, wow. Hulu has revealed an official US trailer with English subtitles for a Korean superpowers series called Moving. This was actually produced by Disney+ in Korea, similar to the extra crazy series Connect from last year. Based on the webtoon of the same name by Kang Full, the series is a supernatural drama that deals with three teenager high school students and their parents who discover their super powers. It's a play on superheroes, much closer to the X-Men series with its narrative, than anything in the MCU. These teens must conceal their superpowers to shelter their parents who have lived with painful secrets facing great danger over generations. Are the monsters? Or heroes? Who is coming after them now? The cast features Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Zo In-sung, Cha Tae-hyun, Ryoo Seung-bum, Kim Sung-kyun, Lee Jung-ha, Go Youn-jung,...

“Seoul Vibe”, the newest film directed by Moon Hyun-sung (whose previous works include 2012 period sports drama “As One” and 2017 even more period crime-mystery “The King’s Case Note”), certainly promises a lot of fun. It is a period piece set in the politically interesting times in recent history, and an action comedy with a lot of car chases. Regarding those things, it is a bit of pity that it came to us via Netflix, meaning only on the small screens, since a movie theatre feels like a natural setting for watching such a flick.

"A fortress on the sea? Nonsense!" Well Go USA has revealed an official teaser trailer for Hansan: Rising Dragon, a Korean historical epic action movie arriving in theaters this July (both in Korea and in the US). The film is technically a follow-up to 2014's The Admiral: Roaring Currents, which explores the historic Battle of Hansan Island. This new film depicts the historical Battle of Hansan, which took place five years before Battle of Myeongnyang depicted in The Admiral, the first full-scale war with the Japanese army since the Japanese invasion of Korea from 1592 to 1598. The main cast includes Park Hae-il, Byun Yo-han, Ahn Seong-gi, Son Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-kyu, Kim Sung-kyun, Kim Hyang-gi, and Ok Taec-yeon. This is only just a teaser, and barely has 45 seconds of footage, but it still looks like an entertaining Korean blockbuster. Curious to see more from this one - it might be an amazing big screen experience!
