The cast for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film is taking shape with some of Hollywood’s finest joining Tom Cruise in the cast.
Last we heard about Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film was in February when Tom Cruise was attached to star.
Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast has gotten significantly bigger. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde are all on board The Revenant director’s new film. Riz Ahmed is also in the final stages of negotiations to join the cast. That’s a lot of star power and it has certainly caught our attention.
Hüller’s career has really taken off since her Oscar nomination for the tremendous Anatomy Of A Fall and it’s great to see a young star such as Wilde in the cast. Wilde was seen in Talk To Me, one of last year’s finest horror films.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is teaming up with acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for an untitled drama film. Iñárritu, known for award-winning movies like Birdman and The Revenant, will direct the movie. The film has assembled a talented cast that includes Tom Cruise as well as several Oscar-winning and nominated actors.
Little is known about the film’s plot, but it is described as a “high-stakes drama.” Sources say the storyline follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he desperately tries to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he caused. This premise suggests audiences will see Cruise take on a serious dramatic role outside the action movies he’s known for.
Joining Cruise in the film are actors with proven dramatic abilities like Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Rising star Sophie Wilde and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed are also expected to star.

Exclusive: Lissette Feliciano (Women Is Losers) is attached to write and direct On Your Feet, a feature adaptation of the same-name Broadway musical that’s in early development at Sony Pictures, Deadline has learned.
A jukebox musical that tells the inspiring true story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two Cuban immigrants who launched themselves to international musical stardom from humble beginnings, On Your Feet will be produced by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, as well as John and Jordan Davis of Davis Entertainment, with John Fox exec producing.
Premiering in November 2015 at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway, where it ran for more than 750 performances, the show specifically hones in on Gloria’s Estefan’s trajectory from her early days in Miami to her breakthrough as the lead singer of the Miami Sound Machine — a crossover artist, blending Latin and pop music — and ultimately, her triumphant return to the stage after a near-fatal accident.

Though he's been happy hanging off of planes (or flying them) for the last few years in the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises, Tom Cruise is also looking to get back to the sort of auteur-driven, smaller-scale work that saw him win acclaim with the likes of Magnolia. Now, on the heels of him making a deal with Warner Bros., it appears he's tracked down his choice. Cruise is on to star in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's next, untitled film.
Little is known about the new project, as the director is keeping it top secret for now. Deadline has learned that he wrote it in 2023 with Sabina Berman alongside his Birdman collaborators Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone.
Iñárritu took a break between 2015's Oscar-winning The Revenant and 2022's Bardo: False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths, which was released via Netflix.

Tom Cruise may have just found his next non-"Mission: Impossible" movie, and his decision seems to mark a turning point some of us have been waiting years to see.
According to a report from Deadline, Cruise has agreed to star in a new movie from "Birdman" and "The Revenant" director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which has Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment in negotiations to distribute and produce. Iñárritu wrote the script with Sabina Berman, as well as the writing team of Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, who co-wrote 2014's "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," but plot details are being kept under lock and key at the moment. The only thing confirmed at this time is that it will be an original story. (Apologies to anyone hoping to see what an Iñárritu-directed "Edge of Tomorrow 2" might look like.)

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in negotiations for a new film from Alejandro González Iñárritu, with Tom Cruise attached to star. The untitled project would be Iñárritu’s first English-language film since “The Revenant.”

Tom Cruise will star in the new feature from The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire the package, which marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for the feature project that was written by Iñárritu, Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone.
The project comes after Cruise inked a splashy (but not exclusive) deal with Warner Bros. last month, leading to rampant speculation over what the pact would yield. The feature also fits the bill of rumors that Cruise is eager to work with auteurs after spending much of the past decade on franchise projects, including the Mission: Impossible films and Top Gun: Maverick, all at Paramount. Exclusive: Sources tell Deadline that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in negotiations for an untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu film starring Tom Cruise. The project would mark Iñárritu’s first English-language pic since his 2015 smash The Revenant.
The film is produced and directed by Iñárritu with a new script he co-wrote in 2023 with Sabina Berman as well as Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, his co-writers on Birdman, reuniting a decade later. This also marks the first film for Cruise (who will also produce) following the announcement of his strategic partnership with Warner Bros last month. It’s expected Legendary will also produce.
This project is being treated as top secret, with no plot details available other than it being a new original story written by Iñárritu. What is known is that the Oscar-winning director has been taking meetings with a select few actors in recent weeks, with Cruise being one of the first.

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.
When it comes to Alexander Payne movies at the Oscars, they’ve so far gone one of two ways. The Golden Globes nominated five films this year for both director and screenplay. The Globes only offer one screenplay category rather than splitting into two with original and adapted like most other awards groups. This means that if your film gets into this category, they really, really love your writing.
Writing and directing seem like they would be paired together often but the two awards have only been awarded to the same film once in the last decade. That was in 2017 when Damien Chazelle won both awards for “La La Land,” which also won Best Comedy/Musical Picture. The other nine years saw a split. Here’s the breakdown.
In 2014, Spike Jonze won Best Screenplay for “Her” while Alfonso Cuarón emerged victorious in the directing race for “Gravity.” The year later, Richard Linklater took home Best Director for “Boyhood” while four writers won for “Birdman:” Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone,...

Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

Alright, you eager Summer movie blockbuster fans, cool your jets. There will be plenty of fast cars, fist fights, and superheroes headed your way in the next couple of months. For now, we can settle down for a bit of culture, a deep dive into high art. Oh, but don’t be fooled by the title, this isn’t a literal translation of the centuries-old Bizet opera. Nor is it the 50’s revamp that starred the much-missed Harry Belafonte. True, there’s a song or two, but the main mode of communication, aside from the dialogue, is dance. No tutus are seen, as it’s a gritty tale of murder of desire along the much-in-the-news Southern border involving a vet named Aidan on the US side, and on the other side, a sultry young beauty on the run named Carmen.

As written by the legendary French composer Georges Bizet, the 19th-century opera “Carmen” has a classic femme fatale at its heart: a fiery, free-spirited and seductive woman headed for her inevitable demise through the downfall of a former lover. So take it with a grain of salt upon hearing the title “Carmen,” in this case a beautiful, dreamlike and defiantly experimental film directed by Benjamin Millepied.
Yes, the tragedy, beauty, love, and passion that define Bizet’s exquisite late Romantic-era masterpiece are all in here in Millepied’s directorial debut. But Millepied’s runaway Carmen, as imagined by writers Loïc Barrere, Alexander Dinelaris and Lisa Loomer, is not so much a doomed temptress archetype as a freedom-hungry firebrand in search of her voice and identity.
In that regard, it would be unfair to claim that Millepied’s “Carmen” is an adaptation of Bizet’s timeless story. In fact, the director...

“Carmen” didn’t begin life as an opera: French Romantic writer Prosper Mérimée conceived this tale of Spanish passion and tragic jealousy in 1845, thirty years before his compatriot Georges Bizet brought it into its best-known, aria-rich form. But it’s a story that thrives on operatic delivery, hinging on emotions so large and loud they beg to be sung at the top of one’s lungs. That makes it the opera that filmmakers can’t leave alone, even as they tend to switch out the music: Its screen interpretations range from Otto Preminger’s Broadway-rooted “Carmen Jones” to Jean-Luc Godard’s daring, Beethoven-infused “First Name: Carmen” to Robert Townsend’s Beyoncé-starring “Carmen: A Hip-Hopera.” With the plainly titled “Carmen,” ballet star and first-time feature director Benjamin Millepied joins that club, mostly eschewing song in an attempt to conjure the material’s intensity through dance. He is only intermittently successful.

Opera lovers flock to performances in order to be thrilled, aroused, overjoyed, moved to tears. Ditto disciples of dance, musical-theater fanatics, and — the worst, most masochistic, and unrepentant art-rush addicts of them all — moviegoers. Georges Bizet’s Carmen shocked audiences when it premiered in 1875 in Paris; eventually, his story of a Spanish soldier and a Roma traveler would become a staple of repertory companies and one of the best-known operas of all time. (Hum the opening notes of this, and at least one person will break into their best Beverly Sills impression.
