Over in the broadcast television world, it's cancellation jitters season as the networks start to announce all of the renewals and cancellations ahead of the reveal of their fall schedules. However, over here in Netflix Land, it's always cancellation jitters season.

Netflix has already handed out a number of renewals and cancellations in 2024, including axing Obliterated after one season and renewing Heartbreak High for a third and final season. But a handful of fan-favorite Netflix shows released this spring are still awaiting word on their fates. There's cause for concern for all of them (except one), though more than one should receive good news.

Here are three Netflix shows currently in the running for a renewal and an additional two that should be renewed but are looking more like cases for cancellation.

You’d think after eight seasons of being under the gun during production of “Game of Thrones” that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would have found luxurious the extended pandemic writing process for Netflix series “3 Body Problem.” But that’s not how Benioff experienced it.

“It didn’t feel that way,” he said on a Zoom with co-creator Alexander Woo. “We were champing at the bit. We had a year-long negotiation to get the rights but meanwhile the three of us were not only doing zooms, we actually started writing just because we were so antsy to get going. And then we had [the pandemic]: it took a very long time before we finally got on set. Even though we had all that time, we still ended up having to rewrite everything. And go back for reshoots. Like a first season of any show, you’re trying to figure it out.

“As an editor, you’re the first audience,” declares “3 Body Problem” editor Michael Ruscio about the essential role that his craft plays in shaping the narrative and amplifying emotion of every scene. For our recent webchat, Ruscio (who received his first career Emmy nomination to date for the Netflix sci-fi blockbuster) adds, “You’re also needing to continually shed, detach and look at it again, and then another time, and then another time,” he explains about the painstaking process of chiseling a scene into its final product. “Sometimes you’ll take the material home where you’re not in the editing bay, and then look at it there, where you can’t touch any buttons and see how does this work for an audience? Marking her first major project after graduating from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, the show based on Liu Cixin’s acclaimed science fiction novel centers on the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization from the star system Trisolaris. The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is continuing to tell the story of its first season through some “additional episodes” that the streamer has ordered, which will seemingly segue into new seasons as the show has been renewed for two more. The 3 Body Problem was the title of the first novel in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The second novel was titled The Dark Forest and the third was Death’s End. The first season of 3 Body Problem did pull in a sizeable audience, but the show wasn’t exactly the massive hit Netflix was hoping it would be, especially when you factor in the price tag of over $20 million per episode.

“Will operates from a place of such immense love and clarity, which I think is often common with people who are dealing with facing their own mortality,” reveals “3 Body Problem” star Alex Sharp. For our recent webchat about portraying Will Downing, a brilliant scientist diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, Sharp recounts a day on set when “there was a line that was ended up being cut. In the bar scene at the beginning of the season, where Jack makes a comment to Will about something to do with him giving up and just being a teacher, Will responds, ‘don’t you think there’s something really noble about dedicating your life to the future?'” he recalls, adding, “that’s just Will. Then you put that person in the position of being terminally ill and it’s like almost a microcosm or metaphor for what humanity is dealing with.

There will be two more seasons of the 3 Body Problem TV series. The series' creators have confirmed that season three will wrap the series at an event held over the weekend.

Before John Bradley was cast as the brash yet lovable Jack Rooney in David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo’s 3 Body Problem, the actor felt that he was limited in terms of the roles being offered to him after his turn as Samwell Tarly on Benioff and Weiss’ Game of Thrones.

“I think that they realized halfway through Game of Thrones that I was nothing like that character,” Bradley tells THR. “Dan Weiss said I was so diametrically opposed to the characters I was playing, and I think they could see that I was being put into that character bracket a little bit too easily, and they knew that I could do more than that. They gave me this chance to show a different side of myself, and I was very flattered by the characterization of Jack, in a way, as somebody that’s very comfortable with himself...

“It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. The 3 Body Problem TV series has been renewed by Netflix, but it is unclear for how many more seasons. Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, revealed that viewers will see the sci-fi drama's story through its epic conclusion.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

The showrunners provided the following statement: “We’re thrilled that we get to tell...

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.

Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.

It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

The news came via Netflix first-ever presentation upfront presentation, during which it was also announced that Benioff and Weiss have extended the overall deal at they entered...

Netflix has picked up additional episodes of 3 Body Problem to conclude the story which will be created, executive produced and written by the returning trio of David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo.

Additionally, Benioff and Weiss will continue their exclusive partnership with the streamer as their multi-year deal to write, produce and direct new series and films has been extended. Beyond Season 2 of this series, they are also working on the recently announced series Death by Lightning. Woo, who has an overall deal with Netflix, will return as co-creator, executive producer and writer on 3 Body Problem.

Review: As soon as it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were developing 3 Body Problem alongside Alexander Woo, I grabbed the novel and read it. The dense first entry in Liu Cixin’s trilogy was a fascinating look at science fiction from a Chinese vantage point with heavy political implications from the nation’s storied history. In translating the book for the screen, 3 Body Problem incorporates many of the cultural elements from the novel into a global and diverse narrative that sets the table for an ongoing series about humanity fighting against an extraterrestrial foe.

It’s go time. The plan to intercept the alien invaders is well underway in Episode 8 of 3 Body Problem, the sci-fi thriller series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo. But will the ambitious plan work?

The Season 1 finale sees Project Staircase put into action, as a series of 300 atomic bombs scattered through space are deployed to propel a probe toward the thousand San-Ti ships en route to Earth. There’s one passenger on board, or, shall we say, a piece of one passenger: the frozen brain of a physics teacher, Will (Alex Sharp).

It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."

The moving One Life throws a spotlight on a British man, Nicholas Winton, who has been called the “British Schindler,” saved far more than one life in the early days of WWII. Anthony Hopkins plays the older Nicholas Winton, who in 1938 had organized a kindertransport, an effort to get hundreds of children, mostly Jewish, out of Prague ahead of the Nazis, but whose heroic efforts were not widely known or recognized until 1988, when he appeared on a popular British TV talk show.

The children and their families had fled to Prague after Hitler seized the Sudetenland, a German-speaking area in the north of the then Czechoslovakia, in 1938, the beginning of Hitler’s plan for conquest. In the infamous appeasement of Hitler, European countries, including Britain, had agreed to Hitler’s demands and ceded the Sudetenland to Germany, with a false promise of peace.

The idea of making major changes to the source material isn't exactly a foreign concept to "3 Body Problem" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pair famously became household names during their tenure on HBO's "Game of Thrones." While they remain infamous among mainstream audiences for the very public criticisms leveled against the final season of the hit fantasy series, the more invested fans have followed their every move from the beginning. Changes both minor and major inspired breathless internet hot takes but, for the most part, the two proved adept at taking occasionally impenetrable concepts from the books and translating them into live action.

Beginning with HBO‘s epic Game of Thrones and continuing with Netflix sci-fi effort 3 Body Problem, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have come to understand an important shortcut in adapting literature for television: keep as much of the good stuff as you can.

Though latter seasons of Thrones deviated significantly from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (mostly due to the fact that Martin couldn’t get the final two books in on time…or maybe ever), the early seasons stuck close to the novels’ rich world. Game of Thrones season 1 is a damn-near carbon copy of the book A Game of Thrones, give or take a Littlefinger monologue here or a “Tyrion slept through the battle” there.

Eiza Gonzalez is joining the cast of her Netflix series 3 Body Problem for the UK premiere after missing the LA premiere earlier in the week.

The 34-year-old actress hit the red carpet for the special screening on Wednesday (March 20) at Frameless in London, England.

3 Body Problem was co-created by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who brought along Liam Cunningham, Jonathan Pryce, and John Bradley to play roles in their new series.

Netflix's "3 Body Problem" adaptation, which I reviewed for /Film here, is a genre-bender in the truest sense of the phrase. Based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's seminal novel of the same name, the series takes its cues from hard sci-fi, horror, and even bursts of fantasy while telling a sweeping and genuinely epic story about humanity's first contact with aliens. The live-action series isn't the first attempt to bring the Hugo-award-winning book to the small screen, as China's own uber-faithful "Three-Body" beat Netflix to the punch a few years ago. But as much as hardcore fans might enjoy pitting the two adaptations against one another, even that manufactured rivalry is nothing compared to the behind-the-scenes drama that ultimately led to "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gaining the rights to put their own spin on the material.

The 2024 SXSW Film Festival kicked off March 8 in Austin with the opening-night world premiere screening of Doug Liman’s Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. By now the inspiring story of Sir Nicholas Winton and the 669 children he saved from near certain death at the hand of the Nazis on the eve of World War II in Europe has been well told in books, documentaries, television programs, a 60 Minutes segment, and many other ways. Even a myth of sorts has been created around this heroic man that isn’t quite the whole truth, but nevertheless Nicky, as he was known, was indeed a hero. He also kept his story secret for 50 years until a BBC show called That’s Life uncovered it and became a sensation in England in the late 80’s. Winton never felt he kept his efforts a half century earlier “secret”, instead he “just never talked about it”.
