Denis Villeneuve is determined to finish Dune in time for its holiday season release. That doesn’t appear to be an easy task in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Indeed, Villeneuve was quarantining from his Canadian home in Montreal when he revealed to the Shanghai International Film Festival (via IndieWire) how much pressure the pandemic has put on Dune, which only now in August is about to begin its reshoots—a fact star Rebecca Ferguson previously alluded to in a separate interview.

“I was planning to go back and shoot some elements later because I wanted to readjust the movie,” Villeneuve said. “I needed time. Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is still on track for a December 18 release later this year from Warner Bros., but it’s a barrel to the finish line according to the director. In a new Montreal-based interview promoting the Shanghai International Film Festival, Villeneuve spoke about how the pandemic has “crushed” the movie’s editing schedule. While production mostly wrapped before the quarantine hit, Villeneuve had been planning reshoots that were ultimately challenged by the shutdown of filming. Check out the video below.

While we wait for cinemas to re-open to moviegoers, Warner Brothers Pictures has released the first images for Dune. The studio is hoping to release it by the end of the year.

Josh Brolin shot a video showing off the set of director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and as you can see, it looks like the landscape of the story you’d image. It seems like a pretty awesome place to shoot the movie. I like how Brolin describes it aa an “ancient space.”

There’s an incredibly talented team of creative people working on Dune, and I have no doubt that this team is going to deliver an amazing film adaptation of Dune.

The 2019 Critics’ Choice Movie and TV Awards were handed out on Sunday (January 13), during a three-hour ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California that aired on the CW Network. This marked the 24th year that the 350 plus members of the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. have awarded prizes while it is the ninth time that their counterparts in the Broadcast Television Journalists Assn. have done so. On the film front, “The Favourite” leads with a whopping 14 nominations. Close behind with 12 bids is “Black Panther” while “First Man” also cracked double digits with 10 nominations in total. There is a three-way tie among the nominees for fourth place while regional critics darling “Roma” reaped eight bids.

Over on the TV side, awards powerhouse Netflix is in first with 20 nominations, with four of those for their new comedy “Glow.

Editor Joe Walker (“Widows”) re-teams with director Denis Villeneuve on his passion project, “Dune,” a retelling of novelist Frank Herbert’s sci-fi saga about power, politics, and religion. This marks their fourth collaboration in a row, following “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

“Dune,” which starts shooting in Budapest in March for Legendary, stars Timothée Chalamet as an exiled nobleman, who leads a rebellion on the eponymous desert planet, whose valuable resource, the mind-enhancing “spice,” causes a feudal war. Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission: Impossible — Fallout”) plays his mother, and Dave Bautista (“Blade Runner 2049”) co-stars as a brutal rival.

“I was deeply familiar with ‘Arrival’ and ‘Blade Runner’ before they were made, sitting next to Denis in the cutting room when he formulated them, but, on this one, I’ve rather enjoyed being kept in the dark,” said Walker, who’s also cut four films for director Steve McQueen and has been nominated twice for Oscars.

The American Cinema Editors guild, which announced nominations for the Eddie Awards on Jan. 7, has a good track record as a predictor of the Academy Awards winner for Best Picture (17 out of the last 28). And it has a great one for forecasting who will win Best Film Editing at the Oscars (21 of the last 28). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar nominations.

In 1992, the Ace Eddie Awards went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two, with five nominees for each of drama and comedy/musical. Over the past 26 years, 115 of the 130 Oscar nominees for Film Editing had first reaped a Golden Eddie bid; that is an accuracy rate of 88%.

Shortly after “Blade Runner 2049” opened this fall, editor Joe Walker discussed the wealth of material that didn’t make the nearly three-hour movie we all saw in cinemas. The one tidbit that captured many people’s attention was his revelation that “the first assembly of the film was nearly four hours and for convenience sake and – to be honest – my bladder’s sake, we broke it into two for viewings.” Most assumed this meant there’s some kind super, extended cut of “Blade Runner 2049” kicking around, but according to Denis Villeneuve, it was an idea that really didn’t get very far.
