When Sandra Bullock was announced as Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie Ocean in an Ocean’s spin-off, fans weren’t exactly jumping on the hate train. It was the trend of the time to troll female-led reboots of popular films. The all-female cast of Ghostbusters reboot in 2016 bore the brunt of social media hate. However, Ocean’s 8 did not receive such a reception.

According to experts, the film did not belong to the “geek culture” where films and characters became part of people’s childhood. Unlike such films, George Clooney’s heist film was fun to watch for the adult demographics and hence fans didn’t mind the female-led adaptation much.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy tells the story of a young, Force-sensitive boy named Sig whose discovery of a mysterious Jedi artifact leads to his entire galaxy being scrambled. The heroes he once looked up to are now the villains of the Star Wars universe, including his brother, Dev. Sig, along with some new companions, attempts a daring mission to put his galaxy back together again.
In this miniseries, the new characters encounter fan-favorite Jedi and Sith, whose allegiances have now flip-flopped. Amid the excitement of fights and wacky character swaps, it is a sweet story of the relationship between the two brothers, as Sig fights to save the person he cares for most. Here are my rankings for the four episodes, from best to worst.

“The Acolyte” alum Jodie Turner-Smith is calling out “Star Wars” parent company Disney for not thwarting racist backlash to the franchise’s actors.
Turner-Smith appeared in the short-lived Disney+ series that also starred Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Lee Jung-jae. The show was cancelled after one season, with lead star Stenberg revealing that the whole cast endured “hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred, and hateful language” on social media.
Turner-Smith now told Glamour UK that Disney should have stepped in.
“They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting fucking dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullshit,” Tuner-Smith said. “It’s just not fair to not say anything. It’s really unfair.”
She added, “It’s disappointing to feel like your studio is not having your back in a very public-facing way.”

Jodie Turner-Smith, who played a role in the canceled Star Wars series “The Acolyte”, publicly disagreed with Disney for staying quiet about online harassment against the show’s cast. Turner-Smith acted as Mother Aniseya in the series. She expressed frustration that Disney did not speak out against racist and mean comments aimed at the cast, especially her co-star Amandla Stenberg.
In a recent interview with Glamour Magazine, Turner-Smith stated, “Disney needs to stop being silent when people are aggressively attacked online with racism and abuse. It’s just not fair to say nothing. It’s really unfair.” Some fans accused “The Acolyte” of having a “woke” message, even before it was canceled. The show, set in the early years of the Star Wars universe, was ended by Lucasfilm after one season due to low viewership and mixed reviews. However, Disney did not comment on harassment of the cast during this time.

It's been two years since /Film's Ryan Scott articulated why it's high past time to stop letting a vocal minority of toxic fans ruin "Star Wars" ... and yet, as a protocol droid who's fluent in over six million forms of communication once observed, "Here we go again."
Say what you will either for or against Leslye Headland's live-action series "The Acolyte," but surely we can all agree: anyone and everyone who insisted the show is bad because it's "woke" or made racist, sexist, and/or homophobic comments about the cast and crew should take a cue from the death sticks guy in "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" and go home to rethink their life. That extends to all those folks who review-bombed "The Acolyte" on Rotten Tomatoes because they were upset that the show's ensemble is primarily composed of women and/or people of color...

While John Boyega has taken on various roles throughout his career, he is best known for his portrayal of Finn in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, a role that catapulted him to global fame. However, his relationship with Disney was less than ideal, and he has since made it clear that he has no interest in working with them again.
Although a return to the Star Wars franchise seems highly unlikely, many fans have held out hope for him to join the MCU. Recently, when he was mentioned as a potential replacement for Jonathan Majors as Kang, Boyega explicitly rejected the idea.
Nonetheless, fans remain undeterred. Following a series of recent Instagram posts, they are once again speculating that Boyega may be gearing up for a superhero role, despite the lack of any concrete evidence to support this.

Although he has played several different roles over the course of his career, John Boyega is primarily known for playing Finn in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, a role that made him globally famous.
But we also know that Boyega’s split with Disney was not that great, and since then, the actor has made it clear that he does not want to work with Disney anymore.
Of course, his return to the Star Wars franchise is almost impossible, but many fans hoped that he could take on an MCU role, it seems that Boyega is not keen on doing that either; recently, when he was mentioned as a potential replacement for Jonathan Majors as Kang, Boyega openly rejected the idea.

John Boyega put himself on the map with a star-making performance in Attack the Block. When he later travelled into a Galaxy Far, Far Away for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we had high hopes for his Stormtrooper-turned-Jedi.
Unfortunately, Lucasfilm dropped the ball on Finn and his story arc disappointed Boyega and Star Wars fans in equal measure.
There's long been hope that the British actor might join a Marvel or DC project and some new social media posts have sent speculation into overdrive about him potentially preparing for one. As you can see below, Boyega has hit the gym and looks ready to don spandex as any number of superhero characters.
Chances are he's just getting into shape or working out for a future role that has nothing to do with the MCU or Dcu. Still, these posts have got fans talking about which heroes - or villains -...

Star Wars: Rey’s Theme Becomes First Music to be Played on Violin in Space - Main Image
Star Wars may be a space fantasy, but its impact on real-life space exploration is staggering; influencing millions to fall in love with spaceships and galaxies far far away.
There have been multiple attempts to bring Star Wars-related things to space, but one particular violinist/astronaut Sarah Gillis has pulled one small string for man, but one giant string for Star Wars fandom.
Rey’s Theme Played in Space
In a recently released video from @PolarisProgram, Gillis is playing Rey’s theme from the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy on violin, making it the first piece of musicever played on violin in space. They even got a full orchestra backing Gillis with her performance.
Check this out:
What’s great is that they even got legendary Star Wars composer John Williams to collaborate with them for the concert.

For any Star Wars fan looking for a project that's unique, laugh-out-loud funny, and filled with references you won't soon forget, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy might check all your boxes and more.
Like many of its predecessors, Rebuild the Galaxy perfectly captures the magic of Lego Star Wars while simultaneously appealing to audience members of all ages. If you like Star Wars, whether you're a casual fan or superfan, you'll love this four-part special. But it's the unique elements of this story that set it apart in a good way.
The four episodes tell the story of Sig Greebling, a (literal) nerf herder who accidentally changes the entire galaxy with one Jedi relic. Suddenly, everything Sig knew about a galaxy far, far away has shifted -- and he's going to need some help to put the pieces back together.

There have been several rewrites of Star Wars canon over the years. The Star Wars Infinities comics of the early 2000s introduced us to Imperial Leia, Jedi Leia, and a Rebel Alliance Darth Vader. Jan Ors of Star Wars Legends shares many similarities to Jyn Erso in stealing the Death Star plans. There has been a lot rewritten about my personal favorites, the X-wing pilots.
In the four-part miniseries Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, audiences will see what happens when there's a complete reformation of the universe. Gizmodo explains, "Using the same Lego bricks, the series' planets vehicles, and technology are dramatically reshaped into kid-bashed mash-ups of preexisting designs and concepts." Neither villains nor heroes can escape the effects of this "brave new world," and writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit discussed the process with the site.

The latest Star Wars game is out now, and it brings players to the seedier parts of the galaxy as they bargain with the enforcers of Jabba the Hutt, the spies of Crimson Dawn and more. Made by Massive Entertainment and Assassin's Creed developer Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws is the first Star Wars game to be released since Electronic Arts' 10-year exclusivity contract expired. There's been a lot of pressure to see how it performs, and so far the reviews have been mixed.
But damn it, I'm playing this game right now and I'm having a blast with it. Following what appeared to be a review-bombing campaign and a surprising level of negativity surrounding the series, The Acolyte was recently cancelled by Disney+ after a single season. Now, many Star Wars fans are left with a long list of unanswered questions about where the story was meant to go which are unlikely to ever be addressed.
Long before that, lead star Amandla Stenberg faced similar racist abuse to John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and Moses Ingram after being cast. Earlier this week, she broke her silence on the decision and has now she's earned the support of fellow Star Wars actor Ahmed Best.
"I will always stand in solidarity for artists who give 110% to their work and art," the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace star said (via SFFGazette.com). "Keep shining queen [Amandla Stenberg]."

Amandla Stenberg was not surprised that “The Acolyte” was canceled by Disney+, despite its viral buzz and strong reviews.
Lead star Stenberg shared on social media that she was bracing for the show to be canceled as the series was plagued by racist hatred from the “alt-right” for years even prior to premiering. The series was created by Leslye Headland and starred Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Lee Jung-jae. The show charted the resurgence of the Sith in the “Star Wars” universe a century before the events of “The Phantom Menace.”

The other week, we learned that Disney had canceled its newest Star Wars show The Acolyte, and this just barely a month after the first season wrapped up with lots of plot threads left dangling. Star Lee Jung-jae (Jedi Master Sol) said he was surprised by the cancelation, but Amandla Stenberg — who played the duel role of Osha and her twin sister Mae — wasn't as thrown.
"I'm gonna be transparent and say it's not a huge shock for me [that the show was canceled]," Sternberg said in an Instagram story. The Acolyte, a spin-off series of Star Wars launched on Disney+, received mixed reviews from the fandom. Recent news of the series being cancelled right after its first season has fans divided. Amandla Stenberg, the lead actress took to their social media post, to express their opinion on the show’s cancellation.
Stenberg claimed the series was a victim of racist and conservative hate from fans of the parent show, and that was the reason behind its fall. However, fans online disagree with her statement and cite the show’s lackluster plot and development as the cause of it being axed. Some fans even hilariously referenced their previous diss track where she slammed the critics for negative remarks on the show.
Fan fallout: Backlash against Amanda Stenberg’s claims
The Acolyte or Star Wars: The Acolyte, was developed by Leslye Headland as a part of the beloved Star Wars franchise.

Blink Twice and The End of the F...ing World star Naomi Ackie played Jannah in 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a character it's widely believed was meant to be revealed as Lando Calrissian's lost daughter before reshoots changed that.
At the time Ackie was cast, actors like John Boyega and Kelly Marie-Tran had faced racist abuse online, with the latter, in particular, becoming a target for those upset by the creative direction of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) Ackie looked back on her time in a Galaxy Far, Far Away and started by revealing how shocked she was by the scale of The Rise of Skywalker. There’s only one way to judge a new Star Wars property in this day and age: Watch it yourself.
Leslye Headland’s “The Acolyte” premiered on June 4 and earned positive response from critics for the first four episodes. The audience ratings are far lower, a combination of disappointed Star Wars purists, bigots, and probably a few trolls. Mileage varies in a major franchise, but rarely this much — and for potential viewers who are curious about the series, it creates a confusing cacophony of shouted disagreement.
If you’re curious about “The Acolyte,” already firmly in its grasp, or willing to have your mind changed, I come to you humbly from a corner of the internet that this show has in an absolute chokehold. One of Netflix’s secret keys to success has been letting shows embrace their darkest elements. The overly managed shows that feel studio-noted to death always seem to fall flat. Yet Sweet Tooth has never really faced that problem. Very few shows can get away with the tone this comic-book adaptation cultivated in Season 1 or Season 2. Placing its story in the apocalypse and having an adult man protect a younger protagonist with special capabilities has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Last of Us. However, there’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.

This is a slow weekend in an already slow summer movie season, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with spring’s best horror release and a handful of new indies that are debuting on digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “The First Omen“
At a time when many franchises are slowly cratering, “The First Omen” has turned out to be one of 2024’s biggest surprises. Arkasha Stevenson‘s handsome and terrifying prequel depicts the events right before Demian, the Og Antichrist, came around. If that sounds unnecessary, it is — and yet the film’s quality absolutely justifies its existence. “The First Omen” is still playing in a smattering of theaters, having grossed $53.7 worldwide, but now it’s available for $19.99 on VOD.
Other contenders:
“Gasoline Rainbow”: Mubi is having a major year, with two buzzy Cannes titles — “The Substance” and “The Girl with the Needle...

Kathleen Kennedy is familiar with the difficulties that women often face in the male-dominated Star Wars world.
In a brief conversation with The New York Times, Kennedy opened up about Leslye Headland’s upcoming series The Acolyte, and how she has faced misogyny as the head of Lucasfilm.
“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying,” she told the publication. “I think Leslye has struggled a little bit with it. I think a lot of the women who step into Star Wars struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male-dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal.”
Kennedy’s comments come ahead of the release of the Disney+ series, which some in the fandom are already slamming for its inclusion of several women and people of color in powerful positions.

Every fandom has its share of toxic elements, but it's probably fair to say that Disney-era Star Wars has experienced more negativity and backlash from a certain contingent of fans than any other franchise over the past few years.
There was the expected amount of pushback to Daisy Ridley being announced as the lead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it really picked up when her character, Rey, was deemed to be a "Mary Sue." The toxicity arguably reached a crescendo when Kelly Marie-Tran's Rose Tico was introduced in The Last Jedi, but the general perception among some fans that Star Wars has become too pandering in its representation and inclusivity continues.
With The Acolyte - a new Disney+ series from showrunner Leslye Headland featuring a primarily female cast - on the horizon, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy acknowledged that coming aboard the franchise can be a "terrifying" experience for female filmmakers and actors.

As The Acolyte is set to make its premiere next week, Kathleen Kennedy has a take on why female characters haven’t been working in the Disney Star Wars era. Kennedy puts the blame on the toxic male fans of Star Wars who allegedly unleashed personal attacks on the actresses playing female characters. However, fans replied to Kennedy’s accusation sharing that Disney’s Star Wars has failed to create a single likeable female character.

In a new interview with The New York Times for the upcoming “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said she is aware that women in the space franchise are often attacked online more than men “because of the fan base being so male dominated.” Female stars Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran certainly faced online harassment from toxic fans when the most recent “Star Wars” film trilogy was released, and now “The Acolyte” is already being attacked in certain corners of the fandom.

George Lucas doesn’t think “Star Wars” is colorblind. In fact, the writer/director wants to remind audiences that the space-set film franchise is dealing with robots and aliens, not race.
While receiving the honorary Palme d’Or in the closing night ceremony at Cannes 2024, Lucas called out critics who complained about the predominantly white casting of the franchise.
“They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said. “Most of the people are aliens! The idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is all people are equal.”
In fact, Lucas pointed to how the only species discrimination is between humans, aliens, and robots.
