Two Sentence Horror Stories creator Vera Miao has set her next project, a horror film titled Rock Springs. She wrote the script and will direct this horror feature, which will star Kelly Marie Tran, Benedict Wong, and Jimmy O. Yang.

The film's plot revolves around a family consisting of a young girl, her mother, and her grandmother, who decide to move to Rock Springs, Wy after the passing of her father. But shortly after their arrival, they find their lives in danger when they discover the town's dark past and that something monstrous lurks in the woods behind their new house.

Kelly Marie Tran, Benedict Wong and Jimmy O. Yang are set to star in “Rock Springs,” a new film from writer-director Vera Miao.

The official logline for the film reads, “A grieving young girl, along with her mother and grandmother, move to Rock Springs, Wyo. after the death of her father, only to discover there is something monstrous hidden in the town’s history and the woods behind their new house.”

Stephen Feder and Kiri Hart for Counterculture; James Lopez, Poppy Hanks and Greta Talia Fuentes for MacRo Film Studios; Matthew Lindner for Juniper Productions; Jason Michael Berman and Jordan Moldo for Mandalay Pictures are all on board to produce the film, which will shoot in Vancouver.

The cast also includes Aria Kim and Fiona Fu. “Rock Springs” represents Miao’s feature debut, after serving as a writer on the Prime Video limited series “Expats” and working as an actress for more than 15 years.

Miao, whose Two Sentence Horror Stories ran for three seasons on the CW, originated the idea for Rock Springs and it was developed by Counterculture, which brought on Macro to produce and finance.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy tells the story of a young, Force-sensitive boy named Sig whose discovery of a mysterious Jedi artifact leads to his entire galaxy being scrambled. The heroes he once looked up to are now the villains of the Star Wars universe, including his brother, Dev. Sig, along with some new companions, attempts a daring mission to put his galaxy back together again.

In this miniseries, the new characters encounter fan-favorite Jedi and Sith, whose allegiances have now flip-flopped. Amid the excitement of fights and wacky character swaps, it is a sweet story of the relationship between the two brothers, as Sig fights to save the person he cares for most. “The Acolyte” alum Jodie Turner-Smith is calling out “Star Wars” parent company Disney for not thwarting racist backlash to the franchise’s actors.

Turner-Smith appeared in the short-lived Disney+ series that also starred Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Lee Jung-jae. The Young Wife’s Kiersey Clemons has accomplished a lot in her young career. After going the big-budget adventure route in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and playing West in the DC Comics films Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Flash, Ms. Clemons has teamed up with director Tayarisha Poe, best known for her debut Prime Video film, Selah and the Spades, for The Young Wife, which premiered at SXSW in 2022.

Kathleen Kennedy is familiar with the difficulties that women often face in the male-dominated Star Wars world.

In a brief conversation with The New York Times, Kennedy opened up about Leslye Headland’s upcoming series The Acolyte, and how she has faced misogyny as the head of Lucasfilm.

“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying,” she told the publication. “I think Leslye has struggled a little bit with it. I think a lot of the women who step into Star Wars struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male-dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal.”

Kennedy’s comments come ahead of the release of the Disney+ series, which some in the fandom are already slamming for its inclusion of several women and people of color in powerful positions.

Every fandom has its share of toxic elements, but it's probably fair to say that Disney-era Star Wars has experienced more negativity and backlash from a certain contingent of fans than any other franchise over the past few years.

There was the expected amount of pushback to Daisy Ridley being announced as the lead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it really picked up when her character, Rey, was deemed to be a "Mary Sue." George Lucas doesn’t think “Star Wars” is colorblind. In fact, the writer/director wants to remind audiences that the space-set film franchise is dealing with robots and aliens, not race.

While receiving the honorary Palme d’Or in the closing night ceremony at Cannes 2024, Lucas called out critics who complained about the predominantly white casting of the franchise.

“They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said. “Most of the people are aliens! The idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is all people are equal.”

Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures have teamed up for the U.S. release of Love Me, the cosmic love story starring Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun that bowed in Sundance as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition section.

The film, the debut feature for writers and directors Sam and Andy Zuchero, a husband and wife filmmaking team, is being shopped in Cannes by WME Independent for foreign sales. Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures plan an early 2025 release for the pic that earned the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize in Sundance as it mixes live action, animation, animatronics and game engine architecture.

Love Me also explores topics surrounding AI and identity as the characters played by Stewart and Yeun evolve from animatronic machines to human beings in a love story that spans billions of years. Taking place after humanity’s collapse, the film follows a satellite and buoy as they fall in love.
