There are fewer harder roles in Star Trek than playing a Vulcan. If you get cast in the role of one, you're in for a tough outing. You need to somehow stand out as a character, nail your delivery, and respect the established lore of the show all without showing much, if any, emotion whatsoever. It's not an easy gig and it can be tough to pull off.

You look at a fan favorite Vulcan, you think of Spock. Brought to life by Leonard Nimoy, fans loved Spock. They thought he was great. Yet, every time a new Vulcan gets introduced as a main character it becomes harder and harder to get them to stand out. Star Trek: Voyager had Tuvok but he wasn't the fan favorite many had hoped. Yet, T'Pol on Star Trek: Enterprise, really showed that you could be a Vulcan in future Star Trek projects and...

I'll get this out of the way right off the bat: T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) is my personal favorite character in Star Trek: Lower Decks. Even though she was initially introduced as an apparent one-off character in Season 2's "wej Duj," her introduction as a new member of the Lower Deckers in Season 4 significantly improved the structure and comedy of the show for me.

Whereas the other primary characters are intense and zany in various ways, T'Lyn is calm and logical, as we might expect a Vulcan to be. This makes T'Lyn an excellent foil to a character like Beckett Mariner without the same level of antagonism that we see between Mariner and senior officer characters, like Commander Ransom or Captain Freeman.

In light of that, it's interesting to note that Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan said in the "Lower Decktionary" special features on the Season 2 Blu-Ray that T'Lyn is a Vulcan version of Mariner.

When Gabrielle Ruiz got the part of T'Lyn on Star Trek: Lower Decks, excitement isn't the right word to describe how she felt. Prior to playing that character, she was also Ensign Lamont, a computer voice, and Castro. Bit parts, but she was still a part of Star Trek, and Ruiz told Star Trek: Explorer's John Kirk that she couldn't say how much she cried when she saw her name in the Star Trek font. And it wasn't just because of her love for Star Trek; her family are huge Trekkies, too. In fact, Ruiz describes herself as a "born and raised Trekkie," calling her mother "a real Trekkie."

So booking the part of T'Lyn, the stoic Vulcan aboard the Cerritos, was a source of great joy for her, especially since she felt she needed to "honor Spock and the generations after." And perhaps its Ruiz's clear happiness at playing...

In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," entitled "Caves," Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid) finds himself trapped in an alien cave with his three best friends, unable to escape. While there is reason to panic -- they are surrounded by seemingly carnivorous moss -- none of them are thrown into a panic. Luckily, being trapped in a cave is a common occurrence on "Star Trek," and something even low-ranking Starfleet officers are familiar with. As Boimler and his friends attempt to escape, they while away the time by reminiscing about their previous cave missions gone awry. 

Boimler tells a story of when he was trapped in a cave with Lieutenant Levy, a genius mathematician who likes to expound on bizarro conspiracy theories. The second-season "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "wej Duj" had a high concept. Rather than merely follow the usual lower-ranking officers on board the U.S.S. Cerritos, it split its time three ways, looking at ensigns on the Cerritos, on the Klingon ship the Iks Che'Ta', and on the Vulcan ship, the Sh'val. The Vulcan ensign (or the Vulcan military's equivalent) was T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz), an officer considered by her superiors to be feisty and emotional. The joke of "wej Duj," of course, is that T'Lyn is just as stone-faced and stoic as her Vulcan counterparts, she merely reacts to crises using instinct sometimes, rather than logic all of the time. 

Fast-forward to the current fourth season of "Lower Decks," and T'Lyn is now serving on board the Cerritos as a provisional officer. She now spends most of her time with Lieutenants Marianer (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford...

For many years, death in "Star Trek" was a permanent event. To cite a notable example: when Captain Kirk's brother Sam (William Shatner) was killed in the episode "Operation -- Annihilate!", he was dead forever. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 4, titled "Something Borrowed, Something Green," takes place largely on the Orion homeworld, the place where Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) hails from. She is there to attend the wedding of her sister D'Erica but also to face the familial legacy she deliberately left behind when she joined Starfleet. The episode features a lot of lingering sororal resentment and multiple mysterious, violent, sexy figures from Tendi's past.

More important to Trekkies, however, are the numerous details about Orion life. "Something Borrowed" is the first time we've really had a good look at the Orions and what they're like in their element.

Orions, of course, first appeared on "Star Trek" as early as the "Original Series" pilot, "The Cage," when Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was seduced by a green-skinned woman at a Roman-style orgy.

At the beginning of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the four main characters Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are each promoted from the lowly rank of ensign to the only slightly-less-lowly rank of lieutenant junior grade. They still don't have much clout on the U.S.S. Cerritos, but at least now they no longer have to sleep in a hallway. One can see their promotions right away as, on their collars, they wear one solid pip and one empty pip. That, any Trekkie will instantly tell you, is the configuration for a lieutenant junior grade.

Team Spidey of “Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends” is collaborating with the Fantastic Four’s very own The Thing — also known as Ben Grimm — in a special Rosh Hashanah-themed episode which is set to premiere on Disney on Sept. 15.

For this holiday episode The Thing, who was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, teams up with the kid-centric characters Miles Morales and Peter Parker to both save and celebrate this year’s Rosh Hashanah.

In the episode, Gobby (aka the Green Goblin) steals all of the bees, threatening the Rosh Hashanah tradition of celebrating the Jewish new year with apples and honey. In Variety’s exclusive clip, The Thing can be seen rejoicing with Team Spidey after they were able to stop Gobby from stealing all the honey in a beautiful moment of love and celebration.

When Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered in the summer of 2020 — so long ago that its streaming home at the time was called CBS All Access, rather than Paramount+ — it seemed caught between two potentially incompatible goals. On the one hand, the animated series, run by Mike McMahan, wanted to satirize all of the most ridiculous ideas the Star Trek franchise had introduced since the mid-20th century. And on the other, it wanted to tell genuine, thrilling Star Trek stories, set a decade or so after the events of the various Nineties spinoffs.

When the Lower Deckers returned this week for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, a few things about our favorite underdog crew looked different. For starters, they're not actually Lower Deckers anymore -- Tendi (Noel Wells), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), and Boimler (Jack Quaid) all receive promotions to lower-tier mid-level officer positions in the premiere, with Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) soon following. But there's also a change to the main crew's roster, as Vulcan T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) appears alongside the main cast -- with little explanation for folks who might not remember her.

Humanitas, the organization that annually honors film and television writers whose work best explores the human condition, has revealed its 2023 winners.

Among the prizewinners is Craig Mazin, who scripted Season 1 The Last of Us episode “Long Long Time” that starred Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett. Mazin won in the Drama Teleplay category, beating out fellow semifinalists that included Peter Gould who was up for the series-finale episode of Better Call Saul.

Other Humanitas category winners in TV included Amy Sherman-Palladino for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Comedy Teleplay), and Tony Phelan & Joan Rater for the pilot of A Small Light in Limited Series.

Trekkies were given a lot to be excited for during Paramount’s Star Trek Universe presentation Saturday with three new teaser trailers for “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”

The announcements, which came out of San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, previewed the upcoming fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” one of Paramount+’s longest running original dramas that will premiere in early 2024; Season 4 of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” which will premiere with its first two episodes Sept. 7; and “Subspace Rhapsody,” the musical-themed ninth episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”

PBS’s Wicked in Concert special next month will be co-hosted by the musical’s original Broadway stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, with performances by Mario Cantone, Gavin Creel, Ariana DeBose, Cynthia Erivo, Stephanie Hsu, Rita Moreno, Jennifer Nettles, Alex Newell, Isaac Powell, Amber Riley, Gabrielle Ruiz and Ali Stroker.

The starry line-up was announced today by Nouveau Productions Executive Producer Robert Pullen. As previously announced, the concert special will air on Sunday, August 29 at 9 p.m. Et on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS Video App.

The concert, directed by Baayork Lee, is designed as a celebration of the return of Broadway following the 16-month Covid pandemic shutdown.
