A.K. Benninghofen (born Amy Kathleen May) is a native Mississippian. Born in Tupelo and raised in Indianola, she is a graduate of Indianola Academy. She went on to earn a B.F.A. in Theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi, including a semester in the Costume Department at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
After studying and working for many years in New York and Los Angeles, A.K. left the world of stage and screen to raise a family in Asheville, North Carolina. In 2021, once her kids were almost grown, she returned to acting. She has since had roles in projects such as The Staircase (HBO), Class of '09 (FX/Hulu), Pain Hustlers (Netflix), A Biltmore Christmas (Hallmark) and others. A.K. has been married to actor Jeff Benninghofen since 2002.
A.K. is also a writer whose work has been published in Word Riot, Passages North, Evergreen Review, Monkeybicycle, Necessary Fiction, Deep South Magazine, A Book of Uncommon Prayer and elsewhere.
