The film currently in post-production will have been completed within two months from the date of Roe’s overturning — which eliminated the longstanding constitutional right to abortion — in an effort to ensure this is a response and not a delayed reaction. “Paper Spiders” opens on a dynamic played out in countless American coming-of-age stories, as bright-eyed high school senior Melanie (Stefania Lavie Owen) and her doting single mother Dawn (Lili Taylor) tour the USC college campus on which the former has her heart set. As Melanie gawps in wonder, Dawn surveys the place with a critical eye, asking neurotic, embarrassing mom questions about campus security and the like: California is, after all, practically a whole country away from their Erie Canal, and she’s not quite ready for her only child to fly that far from the nest. What parent can’t relate? Yet as Inon Shampanier’s heartfelt, honestly acted domestic drama unfolds, this needy mother-daughter bond turns less familiar and more frightening. It’s not the teen’s lack of protection anyone need fear once left to her own devices, but that of her increasingly irrational parent.

When filmmakers set out to tell stories about declining mental health it becomes something of a high wire act to engage an audience without exploiting the subject matter or plunging into melodrama. Without the tabloid lure of a famous life at its core, and in less careful hands, Paper Spiders was in danger of falling into the safety net of broken woman tropes we have seen too many time before.
Instead, co-writers Inon Shampanier (who also directs) and Natalie Shampanier have crafted a small but poignant and authentic look at the impact of psychosis, elevated by the powerful performances of Lili Taylor and Stefania Lavie Owen, and shaded by their real experiences. Mental illness isn’t an easy topic to adapt for the big screen since doing so oftentimes forces a writer into making the choice between pain and hope. Not everyone survives an affliction like delusional disorder and not everyone who suffers from it is able to hold onto a support system with the strength to help. For every story you hear about a person giving up his/her dream to be with someone they love as a constant tethered to reality comes another where the volatility became too much to bear before necessitating an escape with no turning back. There’s a delicate balance that must be struck between those ends of the spectrum because one generally doesn’t exist in isolation from the other. It’s a struggle without any clear answers.
For director Inon Shampanier and co-writer Natalie Shampanier to tackle something so complex is therefore commendable whether...

Everyone remembers hanging out during the summer. No matter what part of your youth it was during, being with your friends, feeling out the first pangs of love and sex with significant others, the whole shebang is steeped in positive nostalgia. Actor turned director Joseph Cross taps into that for his directorial debut Summer Night, a hangout movie from the word go. Cross crafts a film that feels lived in, as if these characters were already your friends. Balancing a number of plot lines with relative ease, he gives all the indications that he’s got a bright future behind the camera. The movie is a coming of age tale, taking place over, you guessed it, one summer night. A whole bunch of young folks are dealing with various romantic entanglements, while most are getting ready to attend a concert at the Alamo that evening. Jameson (Ellar Coltrane) and Seth...

Alex Lawther plays a gay high-schooler with dreams of being homecoming queen in this smug, overcooked comedy drama
Excellent actor Alex Lawther is all but insufferable in this glib, smug and overcooked high-school comedy drama, adapted from the 2007 novel by James St James and in which Trudie Styler makes her directing debut.
Lawther plays Billy Bloom, a flamboyant gay teenager who is bullied by the mean boys and mean girls at his reactionary new high school, and is obsessed by memories of his wonderfully glamorous mother, played by Bette Midler. She is now separated from Billy’s father, an uncaring wealthy man with whom Billy must now live in a vast mansion – it is difficult to tell how ironic his endless self-pity is supposed to be. But, despite being savagely beaten and put into a temporary coma by homophobic jocks, Billy finds some comfort in his friendship with the school...

While it may do a better job at depicting the nihilistic depravity of living through social media at the detriment of “real life” than Ingrid Goes West, Robert Mockler’s Like Me still fails to capture the psychological prison this artificial life creates beyond its surface chaos. We watch Kiya (Addison Timlin) with a voyeuristic relish much like the viewers of her YouTube page—craving insanity as though it’s all an act because it very well could be exactly that. What we watch online isn’t inherently “real.” There isn’t some contract that says “Celebrity A” actually uses “Product B” and isn’t being paid to pretend. There’s no disclaimer stating if a video is staged because not knowing is part of its appeal. But what does this say about us?
That’s the question many cinematic attempts at portraying this blurring of artificial and authentic haven’t answered.

Set for release next month, here’s a trailer and poster for writer/director Robert Mockler’s Like Me – his psychedelic horror-thriller feature debut, which stars stars Addison Timlin, Ian Nelson, Larry Fessenden and Jeremy Gardner.
A reckless loner (Addison Timlin) sets out on a crime spree that she broadcasts on social media. After releasing a video of herself robbing a convenience store, she amasses a huge following. While traveling along the coast, she encounters a drifter, an Internet troll, and a paint huffing outsider who are all pulled into her circle of chaos, junk food, and drugs. Robert Mockler’s visually arresting debut feature, produced by indie horror veteran Larry Fessenden, takes the viewer into a world of fabricated personalities and offers a thought-provoking portrait of isolation in our increasingly digital world.
Like Me is set for release in select Us cinemas and VOD on January 26th.

"An edgy vision of millennial lunacy." Kino Lorber has debuted an official trailer for the indie psychedelic horror feature titled Like Me, the feature debut of director Robert Mockler. This film is a reflection of the times, telling a twisted coming-of-age story about a young woman who sets out on a crime spree that she broadcasts on social media. Starring Addison Timlin (from Little Sister, Fallen, Submission), along with Ian Nelson, Jeremy Gardner, and Larry Fessenden (who also produced it). This has some seriously trippy, neon visuals and Jodorowsky-esque set pieces that some will love, some will hate, but I'm definitely curious. The film "takes the viewer into a world of fabricated personalities and offers a thought-provoking portrait of isolation in our increasingly digital world." Worth a watch, just for the totally wild visuals alone. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Robert Mockler's Like Me, direct from YouTube:...

"What am I going to do with you?" IFC Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an underrated indie dramedy titled Freak Show, which played under-the-radar at a few festivals this year after premiering in Berlin. But I'm guessing most people haven't heard of it. Freak Show is about a "fabulous, glitter-bedecked, gender-bending teenager" named Billy Bloom, played by up-and-coming young actor Alex Lawther, and his experiences at a public high school. It tells a very peculiar story of how to be who you are and not let it affect you, even if you're a freak or weirdo or whatever. His mother is played by Bette Midler, and the cast includes Laverne Cox, Ian Nelson, Abigail Breslin, and AnnaSophia Robb. This is actually a very entertaining film that is worth seeking out, no really. I first saw this at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the summer, and wrote a review here.

After months of sitting in limbo, Paul Reiser’s period comedy “There’s… Johnny!” has finally been given a premiere date: All seven episodes launch November 16, on Hulu.
For Reiser, it’s a relief to finally get to show his pet project to the world. “There’s… Johnny!” had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and was originally set to debut on NBC Universal’s Seeso digital platform in August. But then Seeso was shut down, leaving all of its original series hanging.
Some of Seeso’s existing programs, including “Harmontown,” were sold to another digital company, Vrv. After three or four months of conversations with various potential homes, “There’s… Johnny!” finally landed at Hulu, as part of an overall distribution deal the streaming service signed with NBCU.

The decision at Seeso to shelve “There’s… Johnny!” comes after other shows also haven’t premiered as planned, including Season 2 of Dan Harmon’s “HarmonQuest,” which was supposed to return at the end of July.
Created by Paul Reiser and his “Mad About You” producer David Steven Simon, “There’s… Johnny” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.

Like Me is more than a movie title. It’s a plea made to an entire generation of social media users. As a junkie tweaks for their next hit, social media users also calculate their next play at attention. Yesterday’s shocks are forgotten overnight, as audiences awake with a new craving daily. Please the masses, and watch the hits roll in. But even then, when will the hunger subside?

“Oh my God, He’s threatened my life, my son, my job!”
The unusually stupid The Boy Next Door was a ‘bunnyboiler’, a Fatal Attraction-inspired thriller that taught a valuable lesson about the dangers of hooking up with nutjobs. Jennifer Lopez played Claire Peterson, a 40-ish teacher living with her 16-year old son Kevin (Ian Nelson) after kicking out her cheating husband (John Corbett). Her foray back to the dating scene is a disaster so she soon turns her attentions to Noah (Ryan Guzman) a hunky 19-year old who has moved in with his ailing Grandpa next door (and whose biceps are introduced before he his). At first Noah is a perfect gentleman. He repairs her garage door, replaces her alternator, and helps Kevin, who’s being bullied at school, gain the confidence to ask out the cutie that works at the local hardware store. Starring Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman, is The Boy Next Door already a nail in the coffin of the erotic thriller resurgence?
Intentional or not, it's hard to imagine that there was another film released in UK cinemas last Friday in which sex was less sexy than in It Follows, a terrific lo-fi horror film that comes highly recommended by all accounts.
And yet, last Friday also saw the release of Rob Cohen's The Boy Next Door, an erotic thriller that isn't as sexually charged as it is accidentally hilarious. For all intents and purposes, the film plays like an episode of the How Did This Get Made podcast waiting to happen.
At the start, high school teacher Claire Peterson (Jennifer Lopez) is a single mum who's mulling over whether or not she should get back together with her cheating ex-husband Garrett (John Corbett). Enter Noah, (Ryan Guzman) a...

If I tell you that The Boy Next Door has more in common with The Room and Troll 2 than the work of Alfred Hitchcock, would you consider that a good thing? Don’t bother answering because of course you would. Both films are masterworks of a certain kind of tone, and while Jennifer Lopez’s latest acting effort may not ever reach the same cult status of either, I would say it’s more than a worthy successor to their legacy. That legacy specifically being one of films that are received in more or less the opposite way to how their creators conceived.

She sings, she dances, she's on the American Idol judging panel and, on the odd occasion, she acts. Considering the super-busy Jennifer Lopez only makes a film once every couple of years (her last screen outing was 2013's second-tier Statham vehicle Parker), you'd think she'd be a little more discerning in her choice of roles. After watching the abysmal Boy Next Door, that red-hot breakthrough in Out of Sight feels firmly out of mind.
Her latest has aspirations to be the kind of slick and stylish adult thriller popularised in the '80s and '90s, but ends up imploding thanks to a clunky script, off-key performances and a tone that swings wildly between ultra-serious and camp comedy. If Gone Girl was the perfect example of how to make...

This week Jennifer Lopez stars in "The Boy Next Door," a suburban psychosexual thriller where Lopez plays a recently separated teacher who has an affair with the (legally of-age) boy next door (Ryan Guzman), only to find her on the receiving end of brutal harassment and some profane graffiti (among other things). This is a movie that is so bad that it eclipse its own awfulness and becomes kind of good again. If I had seen it on opening night, in a packed theater full of screaming, susceptible fans, then I probably would have had the time of my life with it. Instead, I was in a stuffy midtown screening room and while there were certainly jolts of approval from the everyday folks the studio sneaked in, it was hard not to snicker in derision every chance we could.

In The Boy Next Door, which hits theaters on Friday, audiences see a side of Jennifer Lopez they've never seen before. The actress, 45, who also produced the film, stars as Claire, a high school teacher on whom her next-door neighbor, Noah, has a little crush. Having just split from her husband, Claire can't resist the attention and she engages in an affair with the 19-year-old Noah. Their affair turns dangerous when he can't shake his obsession, and it is later revealed that he is hiding a dark past. We've seen The Boy Next Door, and it's the ultimate guilty-pleasure film,...

Whether or not you will like The Boy Next Door will be largely determined by your reaction to the film’s trailer. Yes, the trailer makes the movie seem like it’s standard sexy-stalker fare (which, to be honest, it basically is), but there are a few moments in there which make you realize how devilishly tongue-in-cheek it is—most notably, a particular moment at the end of the trailer.

Chicago – There was a different kind of vibe coming from the thriller “The Boy Next Door,” different than what is expected when hearing “Jennifer Lopez as teacher caught in a scandal with a student.” But for every piece of original thinking, there was a fear of making it too different.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
A Jennifer Lopez film that is willing to have a steamy J-Lo love scene, a new attitude for the typical male high school dream boat, plus inappropriate violence and nudity can’t be all bad, especially when anticipating (or not) a flick with Lopez’s name above the title. There are a few – dare I say – Hitchcockian nuggets in the scenario, with some of them actually landing, but overall the necessity to make everything come out right for the J-Lo character was enough to torpedo the overall result. This is not a bad film, but it is lacking.
