Teddy Smith was born on March 11, 1977, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, the youngest of three children. While still in high school, around the age of 15, Smith enrolled in a TV production class and began making short films and music videos. After graduating high school, he went to Hollywood, where he worked as a production assistant at Todd-AO and Universal Studios. His time there was brief and, shortly after, he returned home and continued making short films, writing scripts, and working as a freelance photographer and editor.
His first major break was in 2010 when his short film "Closed for Storm" became a viral success. Roger Ebert screened the film and wrote "(Closed for Storm is) a tour of desolation. Haunting."
In 2013 actor/director Ty Hodges chose him as his cinematographer for his film A Girl Like Grace (2015). In 2014 he directed his first feature, A Gift Horse (2015), which won the coveted Dove Seal award for family friendly films. Later in 2014 he directed his second film A Race to Redemption (2015).
