Will Ferrell is hitting the streets for a new comedy feature from 20th Century Studios.
The performer is attached to produce and star in Street Justice for director Peter Atencio. Dave Callaham is writing the script for the project that will center on a character who decides to deliver his own brand of justice.
Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum of Gloria Sanchez serve as producers alongside David Koplan. Callaham is an executive producer.
Atencio has helmed the features Keanu (2016) and The Machine (2023) and is known for television work on such projects as Key & Peele, The Last Man on Earth and The Afterparty.
Ferrell and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Harper Steele were featured in this year’s Netflix documentary film Will & Harper. Other recent movie credits for Ferrell include Quiz Lady, Barbie and Spirited, along with voice roles in Strays and Despicable Me 4.

Exclusive: Following the release of his acclaimed Netflix documentary Will & Harper, examining his close relationship with transgender former SNL writer Harper Steele, Will Ferrell has found a new project in Street Justice, a comedy that he’ll produce and star in for 20th Century Studios.
Based on an original idea by Dave Callaham, the film has Ferrell playing a Dirty Harry type who goes about taking justice into his own hands, sources tell us. Peter Atencio, a comedy veteran currently in post on Legendary’s forthcoming live-action/animation hybrid Animal Friends, will direct.
Callaham, the writer behind Shang-Chi and the Oscar-nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, penned the script on spec — selling it in a large seven-figure deal, according to our sources — and will serve as executive producer. Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum will produce for Gloria Sanchez Productions, with David Koplan also aboard to produce. The project reunites Callaham and...

Hasan Minhaj is looking back at the gig that almost was.
In an interview with Esquire published Wednesday, the comedian reflected on once being the front-runner to succeed Trevor Noah as the host of The Daily Show. But after The New Yorker published a profile last year alleging that Minhaj embellished and made up his onstage anecdotes for his comedy, the offer for the gig was taken away. Jon Stewart went on to replace Noah, appearing on the show once a week.
“We were in talks, and I had the gig, and we were pretty much good to go,” he told Esquire. After the story was published, Minhaj was called and told the job was no longer his.
“It went away,” he said. “That’s part of showbiz.”
In addition to losing the hosting job, Minhaj explained that the “most painful thing” about the public scrutiny that followed was how it impacted his family.

Hasan Minhaj spoke to Esquire magazine for a new cover story and remembered having a long conversation with Jon Stewart amid the jokes scandal that cost Minhaj one of his dream jobs: hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” It’s a gig Stewart knows well considering he served as the show’s host from 1999 until 2015 and is currently back behind the desk once a week through the 2024 presidential election.
Minhaj confirmed to Esquire that “The Daily Show” job was his, saying: “We were in talks, and I had the gig, and we were pretty much good to go.” Then controversy erupted after The New Yorker published a profile of Minhaj and fact-checked some of his jokes. It was revealed that Minhaj had embellished several stories for his stand-up acts and in the resulting backlash “The Daily Show” hosting gig “went away. That’s part of showbiz.”

Love is back! Not that it ever went anywhere, but with all the things the world has gone through over the past five or so years, it’s no surprise that people are here for two people falling headfirst into that warm feeling we call love. A romantic comedy TV series is a great way to explore all the stages of courtship in a way a movie just can’t. From the meet-cute to the first date, to the big “I love you,” all the way to “I do” – rom-com TV shows have it all! That’s the expectation, at least, for Netflix’s newest addition to the genre: “Nobody Wants This,” debuting on Thursday, Sept. 26. The series follows an agnostic sex podcaster (Kristin Bell) and a newly single rabbi (Adam Brody) who fall in love despite all of the obvious personal and culture differences. So to celebrate a resurgence of rom-coms,...

The Bear has kept everyone on the edge of their seats, craving the secret sauce that makes the show so irresistibly addictive since it premiered in 2022. According to the show’s resident culinary genius, Ebon-Moss Bachrach, Carmy’s much-loved cousin, the real magic ingredient that haunts our dreams is none other than the sweat of its co-stars, literally!

The series peels back the layers of a high-stakes kitchen, revealing the raw, unfiltered chaos behind the scenes. With its intense proximity and relentless pressure, the show takes the stress of a busy kitchen to a whole new level. And the actor believes it was something the people were craving for!

There was a lot to digest during Sunday night’s Emmys telecast, namely that telling twist of Hacks snagging best comedy over The Bear, but what happened off camera proved much more illuminating. We were there to chronicle all of the confusion, ring-kissing and sloppy standing ovations — as well as that mass exodus for the lobby bar.
The Schadenfreude Is Real
There was nothing wrong with Eugene and Dan Levy’s hosting job or monologue. That said, the room was noticeably hungry for some snark — as evidenced by the big laugh Eugene got when he said, “in the spirit of The Bear, we will not be making a joke about it being a comedy.” It truly hit better than any other punchline of the night — and proved quite prophetic when TV Academy voters were revealed to have picked joke-joke-joke comedy Hacks over the reigning restaurant dramedy for the night’s final award.

“The Bear” is an Emmy beast. The FX series just broke its own record for the most Primetime Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year, scoring 11 trophies during the 76th Emmys. That’s an improvement over last year’s 10 Emmys, which was the previous record for a laffer.
Big wins on Sunday night included lead comedy actor, supporting comedy actor, supporting comedy actress and directing (Christopher Storer for “Fishes” or Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew”).
Heading into the Primetime Emmys on Sunday, “The Bear” Season 2 had already won seven Creative Arts Emmys last weekend. Wins included Jamie Lee Curtis (as Donna Berzatto) and Jon Bernthal (as Michael Berzatto), who won guest comedy actress and guest comedy actor, respectively, for the episode “Fishes”; and outstanding casting for a comedy series.

It’s the biggest night of the year for television — for the second time. On Sept. 15, the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on ABC, will honor the best of 2023-2024 on the small screen. There are high expectations for the second Emmy ceremony after the January outing. While the ratings weren’t as high as Fox would have liked for that first show, its nostalgic elements, including cast reunions and set re-creations for series celebrating big anniversaries, made for one of the more enjoyable Emmycasts in years.
With Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay returning as executive producers, it’s safe to assume they’ll find a way to lean into some of those components that pull on heartstrings. (It is the 30th anniversary of “Friends” one week after the Emmys — just sayin’!)
But can the second Emmys measure up? Variety takes a look at what to expect from the ceremony.

Less than a year after Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) won his first Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy on his second consecutive try, Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”) is poised to do the same. Whereas the category’s 2023 lineup included an even mix of veteran and rookie nominees, Bernthal is the sole returning contender this time and has thus emerged as quite a strong frontrunner.
Bernthal currently faces opposition from fellow “The Bear” actors Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter as well as Emmys newcomer Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”) and former TV movie acting nominee Matthew Broderick (“Only Murders in the Building”). Rounding out his list of challengers is Christopher Lloyd (“Hacks”), who poses a distinct threat in that he triumphed on all three of his previous Emmy bids.

On FX’s hit comedy-drama series The Bear, Lionel Boyce plays Marcus Brooks, a humble pastry chef trying to balance the hardships within his life with the hectic environment of the restaurant. While Season 2 maintains the fast-paced, high-adrenaline storylines that the series is known for, the first few episodes take the opportunity to dig deeper into the lives of the other characters throwing down in the kitchen, but namely, Boyce’s Marcus.
Episode 4’s Emmy-nominated episode, “Honeydew,” directed by Ramy Youssef, follows Marcus’s life outside the kitchen, as he serves as caretaker for his ill mother, who is unconscious in a hospital bed. Inevitable Foundation, the non-profit that focuses on supporting mid-career disabled screenwriters, is following up a July study on disability portrayals in film and television with a call to action in Hollywood.
The open letter, released on Wednesday, coincides with a billboard campaign in Las Angeles and New York City calling out the 66 percent of respondants to the study that expressed dissatisfaction with on-screen representations of disability and mental health.
With action points for creatives and executives alike, the letter aims to boost disability representation across the board to tap into the 1 billion global disability audience and, in the foundation’s words, the unmined profit potential. Co-signers on the letter include industry heavyweights such as Paul Feig, Marlee Matlin, Ramy Youssef, Rachel Bloom and Jen Statsky.

Inevitable Foundation’s letter comes several weeks after the unveiling of “Audiences are Waiting for Hollywood to Greenlight Disability,” its report highlighting that 66% of audiences are currently unsatisfied with on-screen representations of disability and mental health. The letter argues that expanding representation in these areas is not about simply checking a Dei box.

Good editing, like a good joke, is all about rhythm. It guides you through a story with a sense of build-up and payoff, sometimes almost invisibly and sometimes in such a way that seeing the structure is part of what makes it so funny. Editor Joanna Naugle can speak to both modes, having edited all kinds of series — and comedy specials, too; she happens to be Emmy nominated this year for both her work on “The Bear” and on Ramy Youssef’s comedy special “More Feelings.”
Those two very different hours of streaming TV are a strange but very fun back-to-back watch; you can start to sense Naugle’s sensibility and her sympathy for her protagonists at work. It helps that “More Feelings” was also directed by “The Bear” showrunner Christopher Storer and shot by “The Bear” Dp Andrew Wehde; meanwhile, Youssef directed Episode 4 of Season 2, “Honeydew,” which Naugle co-edited with Adam Epstein.

The fact that Ramy Youssef would find himself working on an episode of “The Bear” isn’t all that big a surprise. After all, he had worked for years with the show’s co-creator and showrunner Christopher Storer on his own Hulu comedy “Ramy.” He recalls, “Chris and I had always talked about my being involved in some capacity, but I actually think it was about me playing an acting role on the show. Then it grew into this opportunity to go do this one episode. And it was outside the country. ” Yes, that episode turned out to be “Honeydew,” the much-praised fourth episode of “The Bear’s” second season in which pastry chef Marcus (Lionel Boyce) is sent to Copenhagen to train under the renowned Chef Luca (Will Poulter). Youssef directed it and earned his second directing nomination for his trouble. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Seth Meyers is bringing his comedy to HBO.
The Late Night host has lined up his next standup special, which is set to debut on HBO (and Max) later this fall. The hour, his first for the WarnerMedia brand, was taped in front of a live audience in June at The Vic Theatre in Chicago.
“Critics say it’s the special my kids will be talking about in therapy twenty years from now!” Meyers joked in a statement Tuesday. His last hour, Lobby Baby, which famously tackled the messy birth of his second of three children, among other subjects, was released on Netflix in 2019.
“As longtime fans, we’re so happy to partner with Seth on his first HBO special,” noted Nina Rosenstein, executive vp HBO programming, late night and specials. “He’s such a charismatic storyteller and we’ve always loved the way he reaches people on such a personal level.

Few shows in recent years have catapulted as quickly into the zeitgeist as "The Bear." Debuting in June 2022, just as restaurants were beginning to revive in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the first season of the high-stress restaurant dramedy was instantly recognized as must-see TV. The show has since won a boatload of awards, including Emmys for stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
It also dropped two follow-up seasons with a quick turnaround time for a streaming series. For 3 years running now, TV buffs have spent their summer months discussing the epic highs and lows of the restaurant formerly known as The Original Beef of Chicagoland. While the show's second season was as widely praised as the first, its most recent endeavor garnered some mixed feedback among fans and critics -- and revealed some weak spots in the show that may have been there all along.

A day before Ramy Youssef was set to record his latest special “More Feelings,” a friend and fellow comedian and actor Steve Way was scheduled to do a practice run as his opener at Brooklyn’s Bell House. It never happened. “The day of the show, they tell Ramy, ‘Sorry, we can’t get Steve on stage.’ They needed a week’s notice to rent a ramp,’” Way, who has his own special coming soon, recalls. “This isn’t Make-a-Wish. I would rather be told I’m not good enough than, ‘Sorry, there are stairs.’”
In a statement, The Bell House told Variety that it thanks “Steve for his advocacy” and, recently under new management, is “actively taking steps to improve the venue’s accessibility. We are adding a permanent lift and will have ramps available in the meantime.”

Being unable to access the stage isn’t an experience unique to Way.

Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear follows the story of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, an award-winning working in one of the best restaurants in the United States, as he moves back to Chicago to run his family-owned sandwich shop after a tragic incident. The Bear aired its third season recently, and I’m happy to say that the series is getting better with every new season. We are also happy that The Bear was renewed for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 premiere. The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White in the lead role, with Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Jon Bernthal, Oliver Platt, L-Boy, and Edwin Lee Gibson starring in supporting. So, if you love The Bear’s intensity,...

The second season of FX’s The Bear raised the bar within the show’s plot as well as for those in front of and behind the cameras, with a long list of cameos throughout the show and Ramy Youssef as guest director on one of the early episodes.
Season 3 will bring some sizzle to this summer in ten episodes dropping in a binge at the end of June. Last season traced the challenges — fire suppression test and more — that Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and kitchen crew faced to transform The Beef into The Bear.
Here’s what to remember from Season 2 of The Bear for those who need a recap before Season 3:
Natalie (Abbie Elliott) Became Part-Time Project Manager aka COO
To transition from The Beef to The Bear, the sandwich shop needed to refile for permits to do business. Mikey never filed for The Beef. Richie...

The six comedians who gathered for THR’s first Stand-Up Emmy Roundtable insist they don’t worry about their comedy being fact-checked in this moment. Sure, the sextet — Mike Birbiglia, Alex Edelman, Jacqueline Novak, Jenny Slate, Taylor Tomlinson and Ramy Youssef — read The New Yorker profile of Hasan Minhaj from last September that said he exaggerated or made up stories for effect in his specials. But several present suggest the hullabaloo was at best confusing and at worst absurd. “It speaks to a massive integrity void in our society that we look at entertainers and stand-ups the way that we do,” says Youssef. “A politician talks, and the [common person] is like, ‘Yeah, he’s probably lying,’ and then they’re like, ‘But this comedian!’ ” The hourlong conversation at The Georgian Hotel moved beyond emotional truths, of course, as the funnymen and women got deadly serious about their deepest fears, their...

The 2024 Emmy category Best Original Music and Lyrics could be completely dominated by “Saturday Night Live,” as the late night staple has submitted eight songs on the ballot for Season 49. Led by music director Eli Brueggemann and music producer Jake Procanik (Jp), this year’s catchy and satirical entries include Maya Rudolph‘s “Mother’s Day Monologue,” Ryan Gosling‘s “Get That Boy Back” featuring Chris Stapleton, and “Dune Popcorn Bucket” from the Ayo Edebiri-hosted episode. See the complete list below.
Note that “Saturday Night Live” has already won this specific race three times before, for the songs “Dick in a Box” (2007), “Justin Timberlake Monologue” (2011) and “Come Back Barack” (2018). Will the 2024 Emmys bring the long-running program yet another golden statuette for Best Original Music and Lyrics?
The nine other “SNL” tunes nominated through the years are “Motherlover” (2009), “Shy Ronnie” (2010), “I Just Had Sex” (2011), “Jack Sparrow” (2011), “3-Way (The Golden Rule...
