Abu Shahed Emon is an acclaimed Bangladeshi filmmaker and a psychology graduate from Dhaka University who has forged an impressive path in cinema. He further honed his filmmaking expertise at prestigious institutions, including the Sydney Film School, RMIT University, and the Korea National University of Arts, backed by Australian and South Korean government scholarships. He also received a scholarship from the U.S. Department of State under the Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the USA.
Emon's films have graced over 50 prominent international film festivals-including Locarno, Busan, Goa, Montreal World, and Kerala-showcasing his unique storytelling and cinematic talent. His directorial debut, Jalal's Story (2015), won over ten awards and was selected as Bangladesh's entry to the Oscars in 2016. He creatively produced the first Bangladeshi anthology film, Sincerely Yours, Dhaka, which premiered at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival and reached a global audience via Netflix, marking a milestone as the first Bangladeshi anthology on the platform. This film also represented Bangladesh in the official foreign language category in 2020.
He has also produced critically acclaimed films like No Ground Beneath the Feet (2021), which premiered in Busan and was nominated for the Golden Peacock Award at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. The film was Bangladesh's entry to the Oscars in 2023. His production credit A House with No Names (2022) has also traveled the film festival circuit before landing on Chorki, the largest OTT platform in Bangladesh. His debut web series, Mercules (2023), has been met with glowing reviews and is now streaming on Chorki. Emon's impact on cinema remains influential and enduring with compelling documentaries and new projects in development.
