Gelila Bekele
- Director
Gelila Bekele's journey is a testament to her versatility and dedication. Starting as a model in 2006, she graced the pages of leading magazines and beauty campaigns. However, her passion for advocating for young girls' rights in Ethiopia led her to a new path. She embarked on a mission to shed light on under-recognized global issues through the creative platform of filmmaking. In 2013, Gelila transitioned into narrative and documentary filmmaking, further amplifying her voice and increasing awareness through storytelling.
Her most recent releases include "Maxine's Baby: the Tyler Perry Story" (2023) on Amazon Prime, "Mai: Life is Not Honey" at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, and "Anbessa" (Executive Producer) at the Berlin Film Festival in 2018. She also directed "The Model Activists" in 2017. Additionally, Gelila is the author of the book "Guzo!" (2018), which documents the daily lives of native Ethiopians, focusing on customs, cultural traditions, religious practices, and dwellings.
