The new Netflix film, Woman of the Hour, bring the story of the “Dating Game Killer” to the streaming world. As in real life, the film details an episode of The Dating Game, in which one of the bachelors turned out to have been a dangerous threat. The film also reflects Netflix’s reputation as a true crime story hot spot.
The Film Marks The Directorial Debut Of Its Lead Actress
As the film details, serial killer Rodney Alcala appeared on an episode of The Dating Game, where he won a date with contestant Cheryl Bradshaw. At the time, he had already killed five women. When news of this came to light, Alcala’s appearance on the show earned him the nickname, the “Dating Game Killer.”
Anna Kendrick appears in the film as Cheryl Bradshaw. The film also marks the actress’ directorial debut. Actor Daniel Zovatto portrays Alcala.

A debut directorial feature is an exciting prospect from the audience’s perspective. It allows them to experience a new voice in the filmmaking sphere and, consequently, a fresh bout of energy in the filmmaking itself. To expect that voice to exhibit an encompassing uniqueness from its inception would be too much, but a confluence of different inspirations rising through as an expression of ideas can be fascinating.
Such is the case with Anna Kendrick. As much as it is a film squarely set in the 1970s, an adaptation of a true-crime event about serial killer Rodney Alcala, who would appear on a 1978 taping of the game show “The Dating Game,” it is also very much an examination of systemic misogyny and its intersection with violence through a 21st-century lens.
The above line might suggest the film’s flaw is the failure of faithful reconstruction of that era, but that is hardly the case.

It’s a notorious freak moment in daytime television. On Sept. 13, 1978, one of the three competing bachelors on “The Dating Game” was Rodney Alcala, who turned out to be a serial killer; he was captured the following year. It’s no joke — or maybe it’s a meaningful one — to say that Alcala had the looks and personality of a 1970s ladykiller. He was coiffed like one of the Hudson Brothers, with a chiseled grin redolent of Engelbert Humperdinck. He practically beamed good vibes — along with some semi-submerged bad ones, answering his “Dating Game” questions in a way that was so confident it was…aggressive.
TV, of course, never got much kitschier than “The Dating Game.” I used to watch it as a kid, marveling at the fact that the entire show, with its Herb Albert-on-happy-pills theme music and its flower-power décor, was a kind of leering, smirky put-on that...

You never know who you might meet on a dating show — but you might just know some of the faces you’ll see on said show in “Woman of the Hour.”
Directed by Anna Kendrick — marking her directorial debut — the film, now streaming on Netflix, tells the bizarrely true story of how a serial killer went on “The Dating Game,” and won. His appearance on the show was square in the middle of his killing spree, and he wasn’t even caught because of the show.
Not only does Kendrick direct, but she also stars in the film, alongside some other familiar faces.
Here’s who you need to know in “Woman of the Hour.”
Netflix Sheryl Bradshaw (Anna Kendrick)
Cheryl Bradshaw is indeed the woman of the hour referenced in the title, a struggling actress who goes on “The Dating Game” hoping for exposure. Instead, she meets and picks a serial killer.

A matchmaking television show that hooks you up with a blind date may not sound like the ideal place to meet your serial killer, but it is kind of ironic. I mean, you don’t get to see a man’s true face in real life either, so one really knows what goes on behind that charming smile, right? The character of Sheryl, played by debut director Anna Kendrick herself, is based on the real-life person Cheryl Bradshaw. I am not sure why the writer or the director thought of changing the first letter of her name, but maybe they did it to give the character a distinctive touch. Touche. Coming back to our real-life person, Cheryl was a drama teacher from Phoenix, Arizona, who had come to LA to fulfill her dream to be an actor. But even though Cheryl didn’t become a popular movie star, she did...

Based on a true story, Netflix’s Woman of the Hour is both memorable and chilling. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut is the perfect blend of the crime thriller genre with reality show visuals, and is intriguing and sets the mood right. It’s the 1970s, women’s rights were still a debatable topic, and sexist jokes were the norm. An aspiring actor, Sheryl Bradshaw had moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of establishing her career. But every time she rejected nude shoots or refused to wear revealing clothes, she was made aware that Hollywood did not have a space for her. Sheryl struggled to pay her bills, but her agent boosted her confidence and offered her an opportunity to be on television. Sheryl was selected to join The Dating Game, a reality show where a woman was presented with three potential candidates. The candidates were made to sit behind a screen,...

Anna Kendrick is set to make her directorial debut with the Netflix original film "Woman of the Hour" — and it's based on a seriously scary true-crime story.
In case you weren't aware of the story behind "Woman of the Hour," Kendrick and her screenwriter Ian McDonald were inspired by Rodney Alcala, a sexual predator and serial killer who murdered multiple women in California in the late 1970s. In case you didn't find Alcala's crimes disturbing enough yet, he was also in possession of thousands of explicit photographs that included underage subjects, one of which ended up reopening a cold case from 1977 years later in 2016.
Okay, wait — what does this have to do with Kendrick? Well, the Oscar-nominated actress will star in and direct "Woman of the Hour," which retells the real-life story...

More than 20 years after making her screen debut in Camp, a beloved romp about the universal experience of being a theater kid, Anna Kendrick is unpacking the sexism of Hollywood through the true-crime genre with her directorial debut.
While discussing her new movie Woman of the Hour, premiering Friday on Netflix, the Oscar nominee tells Deadline that although she was “actively shoving down” the urge to direct writer Ian McDonald’s Black List script, Kendrick was so drawn to the “heartbreak” in his depiction of “Dating Game Killer” Rodney Alcala‘s victims, she got “really sick at the idea” of anyone else helming the film.
In addition to directing, Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles who finds herself courted by a serial killer (Daniel Zovatto) in the midst of a years-long killing spree, when they cross paths as contestants on popular game show The Dating Game.

Justin Timberlake is expected to change the plea to his Dwi charge to guilty, resolving a case that began when the musician was arrested after being pulled over in the Hamptons this summer.
Per ABC News, Timberlake will enter the new plea at a court hearing in Sag Harbor Village, New York this Friday, Sept. 13. The misdemeanor charge carries a fine penalty, which Timberlake will pay alongside his guilty plea, bringing the matter to a close.

Justin Timberlake appeared virtually for a court appearance in the Hamptons on Friday following his arrest for driving while intoxicating in June.
He pleaded not guilty for a second time in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court in New York, multiple outlets reported on Friday, after his attorney had previously filed a motion to dismiss the charges due to a superior officer not signing the initial charging papers.
Timberlake’s license was suspended as part of the arrest. On Friday, his lawyer, Ed Burke, clarified that, since he has an out-of-state license, it only affects his ability to drive in New York. “This is standard procedure with every Dwi case,” he told reporters, according to ABC News.
The re-arraignment comes a week after Burke had said during a proceeding on July 26 that Timberlake was “not intoxicated” when he was arrested. “I’ll say it again. Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated. And...

Despite Justin Timberlake being arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated, his lawyer claimed in a Friday court hearing that he was “not intoxicated” when he was apprehended last month.
“He was not intoxicated. I’ll say it again. Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated,” Timberlake’s attorney Ed Burke said during the Sag Harbor, New York, proceeding, as reported by ABC7NY. “And we are very confident that charge, that criminal charge, will be dismissed.”
Burke also argued that the police “made a number of very significant errors in this case.”
“You heard the Da try to fix one of those errors, but that’s just one, and there are many others. Sometimes the police, like every one of us, make mistakes. And that’s the case in this very instance,” the attorney continued. He also noted that his client “cooperated with the police offers from the second he was ordered...

Justin Timberlake’s lawyers have claimed the singer was not drunk when he was pulled over and arrested on suspicion of a Dwi in Sag Harbor, New York, last month.
“The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for Dwi,” the lawyer, Ed Burke, said in a statement to Rolling Stone after a court hearing on Friday. “The police made a number of very significant errors in this case… Sometimes the police make mistakes and this is just one of those instances.

Police have released a mugshot of singer Justin Timberlake after his arrest for driving while intoxicated following a night out in the Hamptons.
The 43-year-old was spotted running a stop sign and failing to keep his 2025 BMW in its lane while driving on Madison Street in Sag Harbor shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said. Officers said they smelled alcohol on Timberlake’s breath and noted he had glassy eyes and slow speech.
Timberlake refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene, his lawyer Ed Burke said. He was charged with a single count of Dwi and released without bail after an arraignment Tuesday morning.
According to witnesses, Timberlake had been drinking with friends at the American Hotel earlier in the evening.
Burke said Timberlake admitted to police he’d had one martini and was following friends home when pulled over.

For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick chose a particularly daunting task in tackling the story of the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who staged a terrifying murder spree in the ’70s in which he is thought to have killed upwards of 130 people. The center of Kendrick’s movie, Woman of the Hour, focuses on his appearance in plain sight on a 1978 episode of ABC’s The Dating Game, in which he was the bachelor that contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wound up choosing to go on a date with, not knowing that this was a period in the middle of his murderous spree.
ABC’s 20/20 devoted a full hour in May 2021 to the story of the cold-blooded killer who died in incarceration, but Kendrick’s film version has more on its mind that just the facts. It had its world premiere Friday as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival.

Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” is one of the trickiest balancing acts at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. You could call the film, which premiered Friday at the Princess of Wales Theatre, a black comedy — but that term usually suggests a seriocomic tone running through the film.
“Woman of the Hour,” by contrast, is humorous sometimes and not funny at all at others. It can be amusing when portraying kitschy ’70s pop culture shot through with casual sexism, but it is simply horrifying when sexism turns to rape and murder.
It’s the kind of tonal schizophrenia that would be a challenge for an experienced director to pull off, but first-timer Kendrick manages to make her film both weirdly entertaining and thoroughly disturbing.
The premise itself is completely bizarre, not least because it’s true. In 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala was a contestant on “The Dating Game,...

On the day of the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, candidate Neal Sáles-Griffin went to a polling place first thing in the morning to cast a vote for himself, a celebratory moment he’d worked towards for months. Instead, the digital machine immediately failed. He had to wait as the harried volunteers rebooted it, called tech support, and assured him that any minute now, surely, he’d be able to successfully vote.
As portrayed in NatGeo’s new docuseries “City So Real,” from lauded “Hoop Dreams” documentarian Steve James, this is a small moment in the grand scheme of things. The series is comprised of just five episodes, but follows the entire Chicago mayoral election from the early days following Rahm Emanuel’s resignation, through the protests over a police officer shooting and killing 17 year-old Laquan McDonald, to Lori Lightfoot’s victory, and to the Black Lives Matter protests and coronavirus pandemic unfolding in the present.

For Sama, Waad al-Kateab’s striking documentary about the start of the protests against the Assad regime in Syria, won the Best Feature prize at the International Documentary Association’s Ida Awards.
Al-Kateab shot hundreds of hours of footage over a course of the five-year siege that offered an unflinching view of life in war; the twentysomething economics student married one of the last doctors in her hometown of Aleppo, and they had a daughter, Sama, as the city crumbled around her.
Other winners Saturday at a ceremony on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles included HBO’s Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland, which won for Best Multipart Documentary, and Homecoming, Beyoncé’s Coachella concert film for Netflix.

Netflix has released Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which presents an intimate look at her historic 2018 Coachella performance that paid homage to America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision, Homecoming gives a peek into the process and emotional physical sacrifices it took to conceptualize and execute a performance of that magnitude that became a cultural movement. This stand-alone Netflix original is now available globally on Netflix.
As the first black woman to headline Coachella, Homecoming recognizes the African American visionaries who inspired Beyoncé, including Hbcu alums Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, activist Marian Wright Edelman, and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, in addition to cultural luminaries such as Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Audre Lorde. Beyoncé’s personal knowledge of the relevance and celebration of HBCUs started with her father, Mathew Knowles, an alumnus of Fisk University.

Last April, Beyoncé marched onto a stage in the Coachella Valley and led more than 100 singers, dancers, and steppers through the greatest performance in the modern history of music festivals. Beychella — as it was destined to be known — was live-streamed by 458,000 people, watched by 43 million more on YouTube over the months that followed, and almost immediately dubbed as the definitive pop culture event of the year. This April, Beyoncé managed to fit the whole spectacle into a euphoric, triumphant, and exhaustingly fierce documentary that should help see Beychella enshrined as one of the definitive pop culture events of the century. Call it history in the making, part two.
Even at a time when everything Beyoncé does feels like history in the making, Beychella stands out as a uniquely special event — it remains an epoch unto itself. Of course, most people on this planet don’t need to be told as much.

By now, we all know that Beyoncé woke up flawless. And, apparently, that lyric isn’t an exaggeration.
Bey’s on the latest cover of Out magazine, and Out magazine really wants us to know that Beyoncé is great. Flawless, even! Although the cover story’s author wasn’t able to snag an in-person interview with the Queen, he did get to talk to her team — all of whom had nothing but glowing things to say about their boss. No, really: The overarching theme of the profile is “Beyoncé is perfect.” (Given the subject matter, maybe this shouldn’t be a surprise.

She never does anything halfway, and Beyoncé Knowles ended up making 17 music videos to go along with her newly-released self-titled album.
The “Single Ladies” singer enlisted directors like Terry Richardson, Todd Tourso, Jake Nava, and Hype Williams to help bring her amazing new songs into a visual realm.
And for one of the tracks, “Blue,” Knowles and directors Ed Burke and Bill Kirstein even included some footage of Beyonce carrying her adorable daughter Blue Ivy on her hip in Rio de Janeiro.
Of her “visual album” concept, Knowles explained, "I see music. It's more than just what I hear. When I'm connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."
"I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it.

“I’m trying to really live in the moment," Beyoncé told Oprah last night in their Q&A introduction to Life Is But a Dream, the singer's HBO documentary airing Saturday at 8 p.m. "This is huge for me.” Though Beyoncé herself didn't stop for print interviews on the red carpet, her co-director Ed Burke — who has worked with Beyoncé for eight years and directed her Beyoncé’s I Am... World Tour documentary — happily obliged. Here's what we learned from him. Beyoncé is "so hands-on." (Surprise!) "She was in the edit room fourteen to sixteen hours a day looking at all the footage. New York -- Beyonce is hoping that her ultra-revealing documentary will someday provide inspiration for Blue Ivy, the year-old daughter she and husband Jay-z have.

Beyoncé - I Am...Yours "You had me at hello," sings Beyoncé Knowles as the soul-pop diva embraces scores of outreached hands while working her way to the stage through a crowd of 1500 at the Wynn Hotel's Encore Theater in Las Vegas. Thus begins her new two-hour plus concert CD/DVD I Am...Yours taped in August that is meant to be an intimate, elegant framing of the singer, although that intimacy will seem super-sized when the program is broadcast on ABC-tv this Thanksgiving. This "concert" is a staged, stripped-down reconfiguration by Beyoncé and co-director Nick Wickham (filmed by Ed Burke) of her current touring extravaganza that covers her biggest hits (like "Halo," "Sweet Dreams," and "If I Were A Boy"), and even shoehorns-in a Destiny's Child tribute as she whisks us through her career highlights in two tidy acts plus an "intermission"...
