Warning: The spoilers must flow. This article discusses major plot details from the latest episode of "Dune: Prophecy."
When it was first announced that the recent "Dune" adaptations would receive their very own spinoff series, it's fair to say that many fans had one main question: Why? Both blockbusters had managed to do the impossible and turn author Frank Herbert's nerdy sci-fi/fantasy story into a mainstream sensation, reinforcing the idea that only a filmmaker like Denis Villeneuve had cracked the code. What more could a streaming show, even one about the space-witch society known as the Bene Gesserit, possibly accomplish?
Well, it only took the opening scene for showrunner Alison Schapker, co-developer Diane Ademu-John, and their writing team to make a statement and add their own significant contribution to the franchise's sprawling lore -- something that even the movies never dared to depict.

The first episode of Dune: Prophecy has aired on HBO and Max, starting us off on a strange, compelling journey through the Imperium some 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides. It's the Dune we know, it's Dune as we've never seen it, it's a good time in front of the TV.
We've been lucky enough to get to talk to some of the cast and crew members behind the show. That includes Jihae, who plays the Reverand Mother Kasha, a Bene Gesserit sister who is the personal Truthsayer of Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) himself, as well as a maternal figure for the emperor's daughter and heir apparent, the Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina). Kasha resides with the royal family on the imperial planet of Salusa Secundus, which sets her up as someone with a lot of power and influence. But if you watched the opening episode, "The Hidden Hand,...

Tonight marked the premiere of Dune: Prophecy, a new TV show set in the Dune universe, but set some 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood is just starting to really establish itself as an invaluable organization to the great houses of the Imperium, with Truthsaying sisters stationed with ever important leader in the known universe. That includes Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), who rules the Imperium from the Golden Lion Throne on the planet of Salusa Secundus.
The emperor has a colorful family. His wife, the Empress Natalya (Jodhi May), doesn't always agree with his decisions; his daughter and heir apparent Princess Ynez wants to train with the Bene Gesserit; and his bastard son Constantine (Josh Heuston) is something of a royal layabout. He's rich enough that he doesn't have to work, but he's also not in line for the throne, so he doesn't feel...

Building a genre series from scratch is tough. Millions of devoted fans and detailed source material can’t guarantee an audience for shows like “Game of Thrones” or “The Rings of Power” — or for their new cousin, “Dune: Prophecy.”
Developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, this prequel to Denis Villenueve’s “Dune” film series doesn’t require watching either movie. As established in Episode 1, “The Hidden Hand,” written by Ademu-John and directed by Anna Foerster, these events took place more than 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya found themselves on the planet Arrakis, focused on the mysterious Sisterhood known as the Bene-Gesserit.
Episode 1 is tasked with dense exposition. In the century after mankind defeated technology (“thinking machines”), Valya Harkonnen (Jessica Barden) joins the Sisterhood, a group of “women unafraid of their power.” The Sisters are truthsayers, assigned to powerful houses, and Valya soon becomes a favorite of Mother Superior,...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the premiere episode of "Dune: Prophecy."
How do you make one big-budget streaming series stand out from all the rest? Well, ending your premiere on one heck of a shocker is definitely a tried-and-true method to get tongues wagging. We've seen that approach before work like gangbusters on the biggest of all fantasy shows in 2011, when the "Game of Thrones" premiere faithfully recreated one of the most unexpected twists in author George R.R. Martin's novels by having young Bran shoved out of that tower and left for dead. Given how much "Dune: Prophecy" feels indebted to HBO's flagship series, perhaps it's not so surprising to see the show's creative team attempt to recreate a very similar moment ... though by upping the horrific nature of this particular murder.

The first time I watched the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy, I was afraid I wasn't going to like the show. "The Hidden Hand" kicks off with a 15-minute lore dump, catching viewers up on decades of pre-history. We learn about the Machine Wars, which mankind barely won against the thinking machines that enslaved us; we banned all thinking machines afterwards. We learn about how orders like the Bene Gesserit sprung up to replace thinking machines; the Bene Gesserit sisters have trained to become human lie detectors, making themselves invaluable to the great houses of the Imperium. We learn about Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson), the first leader of the Bene Gesserit, who passed her skills onto the young Valya Hakonnen. We see scenes from a nasty power struggle that follows Raquella's death, and only then do we jump forward to catch up with Valya as an older, more experienced sister who's now running the order,...

[This story contains spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy series premiere, as well as House of the Dragon seasons one and two.]
The end of an old war brings about a regime change in a faraway fantasy land. From that moment forward, one organization holds all the cards over the rest of civilization, while others scheme and plot their way toward ultimate power — or die trying.
Sound familiar? That could be because it’s a very vague description of two HBO shows that aired episodes this year: House of the Dragon, which completed its second season over the summer, and the newest arrival, Dune: Prophecy, based on the novel universe created by Frank Herbert and most recently adapted for film by Denis Villeneuve.
Coming hot on the heels of the widely beloved (and fellow Max import) Penguin, the new Dune series aims to capture HBO loyalists’ attention with another epic novel adaptation, not entirely unlike the other epic novel adaptation.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have become so popular that they have created a massive multimedia franchise. The first Dune television project since the SyFy Channel miniseries in the early 2000s, HBO’s Dune: Prophecy is an adaptation of the book Sisterhood of Dune written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Imagine what you would think an HBO Dune series would look like, and that is basically exactly what you get with Dune: Prophecy.
If you have not seen episode 1 of Dune: Prophecy, stop reading here because this article contains Massive spoilers.
Dune: Prophecy Episode 1 Recap
Like Villeneuve’s Dune films, Dune: Prophecy begins with a quote that summarizes the show’s central theme: “Victory is celebrated in the light, but it is won in the darkness.”
The show’s narrator, Valya Harkonnen, then explains the context of the universe. Led by the House Atreides, the humans rose up against the “thinking machines,...

We have some great news for Dune fans! While we have to wait until Dec. 18, 2026, for Dune: Part 3 starring Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, the world of Dune is expanding with a new prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, coming to HBO and Max on Sunday, Nov. 17!
According to HBO, Dune: Prophecy is inspired by the book, Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The prequel series is set about 10,000 years before the events of Dune and Paul Atreides' arrival on Arrakis.
In the series, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams star as Mother Superior Valya and Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen, respectively, as the sisters, in a time of great need, establish the Bene Gesserit, which obviously looms very large in the Dune universe.
I can't wait to see this series. The Bene Gesserit is easily one of the most fascinating parts of the Dune story, and this should be especially...

Dune: Prophecy is gearing up for its premiere and already creating a lot of excitement among fans eager to see something only HBO can deliver. The company got a distinct style in its productions that audiences have loved ever since Game of Thrones. So, naturally, the comparisons between the two series have already started.

Plot: From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the review embargo for Dune: Prophecy lifted earlier today and the response to the six-episode HBO series is so far mostly positive. While this is technically a prequel to the Dune movies, Denis Villeneuve isn't involved and the massive time gap means there will be no crossovers.
For the most part, it sounds like Dune: Prophecy is a worthy addition to the sci-fi franchise, even if it doesn't necessarily break the mould. For fans of Villeneuve's groundbreaking movies, that's likely to come as something of a let-down.
In The Hollywood Reporter's review, it's said, "Even though it’s part of a brand, Dune: Prophecy has lots of elements to introduce, and the series is already a slow, sometimes lugubrious build. But I found myself becoming increasingly invested as it went along. Maybe by the end of the first season, I’ll be hooked.

"Everything to love, and nothing to hate." This is also exactly what I'm hoping for with this show. HBO has unveiled a promo featurette for the new sci-fi series Dune: Prophecy, which will begin streaming on Max later this week. Looks like it'll be worth the wait. Set 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, before the universe knew them as the Bene Gesserit... This is directly connected to Denis Villeneuve's two (so far) brilliant Dune movies but takes place in the distant past. Based on the book "Sisterhood of Dune" by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Frank's son). This exciting behind-the-scenes look at the epic interplanetary series includes tons of making of shots + interview bits edited into clips of footage from the big sci-fi series. Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Tabu, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina,...

When does a pattern turn into a trend? How about a trend becoming a bad habit? And at what point does a bad habit metastasize into an all-out plea for help? For the better part of the last two decades, studios have taken every IP they happen to hold the rights to and strip-mined them in order to replicate past blockbuster successes. From "The Hobbit" trilogy to the "Jurassic World" movies to, well, whatever "Star Wars" is doing these days, each of these examples were made out of an obvious desire to make money and (for the most part) managed to haul in billion-dollar profits by the truckload. Nowadays, however, even the industry's most reliable quality -- shameless corporate greed -- feels all muddled. The rise of streaming meant splintering off once-reliable money-makers into endless spin-off shows and prequel series, chasing the allure of subscriber numbers and Wall Street gains over cold,...

A prequel series to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epics, Dune: Prophecy also positions itself as a Game Of Thrones successor – and highlights the differences between film and TV.
Earlier this year, director Denis Villeneuve sparked a small ripple of controversy when he remarked that “movies have been corrupted by television.”
Cinema, he added, is about a “strong image” rather than dialogue. Ironically, as those words were published, the cameras were still unrolling on Dune: Prophecy, a prequel series which takes its visual tonal cue from Villeneuve’s Dune movies.
Having watched the first two episodes ahead of the show’s premiere later this month, it’s fascinating to see how it highlights not only the blurred line between TV and film when it comes to scope and production values, but also how vastly different the two mediums can still be. One may have corrupted the other, but movies and TV...

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Review: HBO’s Somber ‘House of the Dragon’-Style Prequel Could Use a Bit More Spice
When it premieres on HBO Sunday, Nov. 17, Dune: Prophecy will take the place of The Penguin on the schedule. It’ll also continue the premium cable giant’s recent run of odd corporate integration, in which it takes blockbuster Warner Bros. film franchises and retrofits them as new television versions of popular HBO series.
Just as the creative team behind The Penguin looked at the opportunity to do a standalone show focused on Colin Farrell’s waddling crime lord and delivered The Sopranos with more latex, the developers of Dune: Prophecy apparently looked at the opportunity to do a prequel tied to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and delivered House of the Dragon with (a very few) sandworms in place of (an awful lot of) dragons.
I’m not saying that when HBO’s Harry Potter series finally emerges from its endless gestation, it will be a stealth reboot of Arli...

He who controls the franchises, controls the world! Denis Villeneuve had not even completed the first half of his two-part Dune adaptation before plans for a TV spin-off were announced in 2019 — it was already obvious that his particular spice world would be fertile ground for future intellectual-property harvesting. Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic had been brought to the small screen before, but this new HBO series would build off of Villeneuve’s vision and borrow from the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian “Son of Frank” Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Once upon a time, HBO was the network bold enough to go where other networks feared to tread. It kicked off the modern age of the TV antihero with The Sopranos, pushed the sitcom into new territory with Sex and the City, and started a fantasy gold rush with Game of Thrones. Lately, HBO seems more willing to take cues rather than give them, embracing the era of big IP with multiple Game of Thrones prequels, a spinoff of The Batman called The Penguin, an adaptation of the blockbuster video game The Last of Us, and is now giving us a Dune prequel show in the form of Dune: Prophecy.
There's a part of me that misses the days when HBO would start trends rather than follow them, but does this shift really matter so long as they're putting out quality TV? At least so far, not really. The Penguin...

HBO’s latest venture into the universe of Dune with the upcoming series ‘Dune: Prophecy’ seems to be channeling a cosmic version of ‘Game of Thrones’.
The new clip from the show has ignited conversations among fans, drawing comparisons to memorable dynamics like those seen in early ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes, reminiscent of the sharp exchanges between Olenna Tyrell and Cersei Lannister.
Slated for a November 17, 2024 premiere, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ is a six-episode series that acts as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s ongoing Dune film trilogy.

Max’s Dune: Prophecy is all set to debut on the streaming platform soon and the recent trailer promises an intense political drama with action-packed sequences.

Get ready to jump back into the world of Dune with HBO's new spinoff series, Dune: Prophecy. Taking place 10,000 years before the events of the 2021 film, the show — developed by Alison Schapker (Westworld) and Diane Ademu-John (Medium) — shows us how the super-powered sisterhood known as the Bene Gesserit comes to be, and how Harkonnen sisters Valya and Tula navigate the many threats against them.
The impressive cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jodhi May, and other familiar faces, along with newcomers Chloe Lea, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, and more. Having seen the first two episodes of the prequel, I can tease that it's worth watching. The exclusive and mysterious sisterhood is one of my favorite parts of the Dune movies, so getting a chance to dig deeper into their lore is a thrill, plus the acting, writing, cinematography, and costumes are solid.

HBO has just dropped the official trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com) following a star-studded panel at the New York Comic-Con. It's also been revealed that the six-episode series premieres on Sunday, November 17 at 9pm Et/Pt.
If you're unfamiliar with Frank Herbert's Dune books, you may struggle to make sense of what you see here. There's a great deal of political intrigue, though, with the spotlight put primarily on Bene Gesserit's mysterious origins.
Talking to Screen Rant earlier today, executive producer Allison Schapkey explained how this iteration of the group differs from what we've seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.
"I think when you see the Bene Gesserit in the films, first of all, you're really seeing their forward face. They cultivate such a mystique, such a mystery. And they're out there being ruthless and decisive and powerful and trying to play every angle and manipulate every possible outcome.

"The Imperium is a circus of fear and rumor. I'm surrounded by vipers!" Whoa! This looks awesome. A better intro from the novel: "It is eighty-three years after the last of the thinking machines were destroyed in the Battle of Corrin, after Faykan Butler took the name of Corrino and established himself as the first Emperor of a new Imperium. Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the TV series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a November premiere on both HBO and the Max streaming service… and now we’ve learned that the promotions will begin at New York Comic Con, where attendees will get to experience both a panel and a fan experience.
