Exclusive: Black Box Management has signed Nick August-Perna, the filmmaker behind the buzzy true crime doc Tell Them You Love Me, which topped Netflix’s film charts in its February debut.

Hitting #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, the film tells the true story of Anna Stubblefield, an esteemed professor involved in a controversial affair with Derrick Johnson, a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy. Their relationship eventually led to a criminal trial challenging perceptions of disability and nature of consent.

Black Box and August-Perna are teaming to produce a scripted remake of the film, the hope being to replica the success of much-discussed true-crime projects like I, Tonya, The Act, and The Girl from Plainville.

In a statement to Deadline, Black Box’s founding partners Mike Dill and Lowell Shapiro shared, “When we first saw Nick’s incredible film Tell Them You Love Me, we knew that he was someone we had to represent.

Vertical has acquired Conor Soucy’s directorial debut “Dead Whisper” and will debut it in select theaters on July 5, and on AppleTV and Prime Video, beginning July 9.

The horror/thriller film “Dead Whisper” stars Samuel Dunning (“Tim Travers and the Time Travelers Paradox”) and marks the first on-screen role for Rob Evan, whose previous credits include Broadway’s “Les Misérables,” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” The rest of the cast’s ensemble includes Tana Sirois, Samantha Hill, Codey Gillum, Chris Goodwin, Dhane Ross, Hester Wilkinson and Bruce Winant.

Black Box is launching sales on Jean-Cosme Delaloye’s Desire: The Carl Craig Story at the New York fest this week. The movie from Bord Cadre Films and Sovereign Films is the first out the blocks from the agency that represents the likes of John Patton Ford (Huntington), Tone Bell (Survival of the Thickest) and Lisa Cortes (Little Richard: I Am Everything). It subsequently plans to represent global features and series for the North American marketplace, some of which will feature Black Box talent and some of which won’t.

“Black Box Sales enables us to expand our industry reach with the filmmaker community since we are selling films from directors from all over the world, not just ones we represent here in the U.S.,” said Black Box partners Lowell Shapiro and Mike Dill.

Exclusive: Vertical on Wednesday announced their appointment of former Amazon Prime Video exec Jason Pecora to the newly created role of Executive Vice President, Distribution.

The L.A.-based Pecora will be responsible for overseeing Sales, Marketing and Operations. He begins immediately, reporting to Vertical Partners Peter Jarowey and Rich Goldberg.

Pecora spent more than four and a half years as Senior Content Acquisition Manager at Prime Video, during that time overseeing all title promotions with leading suppliers including Vertical, Paramount, Viacom, Lionsgate, MGM and AMC. Notably, he last year oversaw Amazon’s release of Top Gun: Maverick, which was the top-selling item on the platform in the U.S. across every category on the day of its release.

Exclusive: Legendary has set an all-star cast for their forthcoming film Animal Friends, combining live-action and animated characters from writing duo Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, with Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 3), Jason Momoa (Fast X), Vince Vaughn (Bad Monkey) and Aubrey Plaza (Megalopolis) coming aboard for roles.

Exclusive: Theo Rossi has been tapped for a key recurring role opposite Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti in the HBO Max original series The Penguin (working title) from Warner Bros Television and DC Studios.

The eight-episode drama continues the Batman crime saga Matt Reeves began with Warner Bros Pictures’ The Batman and centers on the character played by Farrell in the film. Milioti plays female lead Sofia Falcone. Details about Rossi’s character are not yet being revealed. Rhenzy Feliz also stars.

The series is executive produced by Reeves; Dylan Clark; Farrell; Lauren LeFranc, who writes and serves as showrunner; Craig Zobel, who directs the first three episodes; and Bill Carraro. Saturday saw awards season alight on the Independent Spirit Awards, which honours, as the title might clue you in, indie movies. And it was another big day for Everything Everywhere All At Once, which added seven prizes, including Best Feature, to its already impressive awards haul.

The awards — which used to be held the day before the Oscars, but shifted in 2021 – introduced gender neutral acting categories, leading to the likes of Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh competing against Paul Mescal and Jeremy Pope. Yeoh took the win for Eeaao, while the movie also scored Best Director for the Daniels, Best Supporting Performance for Key huy Quan (the latest in his apparent sweep of the category), Best Screenplay, Best Editing for Paul Rogers and Breakthrough Performance for Stephanie Hsu.

The 38th Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted by Hasan Minhaj, took place on Saturday, live from the beach in Santa Monica, California. The annual awards ceremony was live-streamed on IMDb’s YouTube page, plus additional social platforms, including Film Independent’s YouTube channel.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” led this year’s nominations with a total of eight and swept up seven awards. Following close behind was Cate Blanchett’s “Tár” with seven nods and “Aftersun” with five. Meanwhile, “The Bear” topped the television categories.

The 2023 Spirit Awards marks the show’s first time highlighting gender-neutral categories. In other words, Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh were up against Paul Mescal for lead performance. This year’s recipient of the Robert Altman award went to “Women Talking”, in which the award was given to the film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.

The host of the 2023 Spirit Awards, Hasan Minhaj, suggested in his monologue that Cate Blanchett was the one to beat at this year’s awards.

But instead, Blanchett and her film Tár nearly went home empty-handed, only winning one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. The Focus film won in the best cinematography category but lost in the other categories in which it was nominated.

Tár wasn’t the only movie with multiple Spirit Awards nominations to fail to win, as Everything Everywhere All at Once’s dominance meant that the following films, all of which were up for several awards, were also shut out: Four-time nominee Palm Trees and Power Lines and three-time nominees Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet; The Inspection; and Murina.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” continued its awards sweep at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on its path to the Oscars next weekend. The multiverse-hopping adventure collected awards for best picture, directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, actors Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, screenplay and editing.

“Thank you to everyone who makes crazy, weird independent movies,” Scheinert said.

Awards were handed out Saturday afternoon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., and the show was streamed live on YouTube and Twitter.

First-time Spirit Awards host Hasan Minhaj opened the show saying, “Of all the awards shows, this is by far, one of them.”
