Antibirth is written and directed by Danny Perez. The film stars Natasha Lyonne, Chloe Sevigny, and Meg Tilly.
Antibirth is billed as a psychedelic horror film, which is what interested me in seeing it. While the film does have one striking psychedelic scene right in the middle, for the most part Antibirth is more drunk than high.
Antibirth is about a heavy-drinking, whip-it huffing, drugged-out woman, Lou, who mysteriously becomes pregnant, even though she doesn't remember having had sex in the last six months. Of course we know right away that the fact that she doesn't remember having had sex doesn't actually mean that she actually hasn't, but she doesn't seem to know this, and neither do the other characters. As her pregnancy progresses she shows unusual symptoms, but instead of taking any meaningful action she just mopes around.

Over the last few years Steven Chang has emerged as one of the most active members of the indie horror community. There is no question that Mr. Chang is deeply passionate about the various artists that he promotes through his Facebook "spotlights," as well as his various Facebook pages. I also like to believe that the artists Chang supports appreciate his boundless enthusiasm for them and their work. I got the chance recently to interview Chang via Facebook's messenger app. You can read our discussion below.
Jonathan Weichsel: How would you describe your role within the indie horror industry? Are you a promoter? Networker? What is your title?
Steven Chang: I am mainly a promoter who does networking when events are available. Such as horror cons or film festivals.
Jonathan Weichsel: Cool! So, how did you first get into indie horror?

On Thursday September 26th I got to take everybody's favorite scream queens, Jessica Cameron and Heather Dorff, to the grand opening of Queen Mary's Dark Harbor, for a night of adventure, thrills and scares. Queen Mary's Dark Harbor has become a perennial haunted attraction in the greater Los Angeles area for good reason; it features fun mazes and a really great atmosphere in one of the best locations in La.
We went through all of the mazes, and all three of us agree that the best maze is Circus. Not only does Circus have the best scare actors, but it is also the most physically challenging maze, with a ball pit, mirror room, and other obstacles. We also enjoyed, Sideshow which features a room filled with fog and hanging white curtains, so that your visibility is limited to about six inches. We also enjoyed Panic,...

All Girls Weekend is written and directed by Lou Simon. The film stars Jamie Bernadette, Katie Carpenter, Gema Calero, Michele Gourdine, Sharron Calvin, and Karishma Lakhani.
When we are first introduced to the luckless protagonists of All Girls Weekend, in an overly lit scene full of expository soap opera dialogue, set in a generic movie house, the kind that is too tidy to believe people actually live there, with framed posters of the director's previous films hanging on the walls behind the actors, I did not think that I was in store for a good, or even competently made movie. But, as cliché as it might be for me to write, All Girls Weekend gets better as it goes along, and once the characters become lost in the woods, and the dreadfulness of the situation they are in becomes apparent, it becomes an effective,...

Horror director Kansas Bowling (B.C. Butcher) is a huge music fan, and she recently sent me a tip about a cool new rock album that was literally fifty years in the making. In 1965 five boys, aged fifteen to seventeen, some students at Beverly Hills High, some dropouts, formed a garage rock band called The Sloths. After playing at venues around Hollywood such as The Stratford, Sea Witch, The Hullabaloo, Hollywood Palladium, The Whiskey, Bito Lidos, and The Galaxy, and sharing bills with The Doors, Love, Iron Butterfly, The Seeds, Pink Floyd and The Animals, The Sloths were approached by Impression Records and recorded two original songs; “Makin’ Love” and “You Mean Everything To Me.” The band made the rounds of the major radio stations, hoping to have their record played. But “Makin’ Love” was considered too controversial, and “You Mean Everything To Me’” was only played on air once.

The film that is possibly too European for Americans but not too beautiful for bloodshed, is now available on Blu-ray, thanks to Chad Armstrong at Lc Films, who engineered the project for LeglessCorpse: The website for True Independent Horror.
His team has manufactured this wonderful product to satisfy collectors' demands, with breathtaking scans of the original elements, to bring you a movie viewing experience with crystal clarity, for a completely gratifying 98 minute thrill-ride of gory ballerina mayhem. Digitally remastered in stunning High Definition.
The disc has extras that aren't included on the DVD, including the never-before-seen audition videos, where desperate young thespians bare their acting chops…. And much much more - to be an onscreen ballerina! A few very rare cassette tapes of the music from the motion picture soundtrack will also me included for some lucky buyers.
The BluRay can be purchased here for a mere 10 dollars here.

Jonathan Weichsel: So, you have a new movie out called Peelers. I watched the trailer this afternoon and it looks awesome. I know you star in it. Care to tell me about your character?
Wren Walker: You liked the teaser? Awesome!! I play Blue Jean Douglas, a baseball loving former stripper turned owner of Titty Balls, a strip club in a nowhere town. She's tough as hell.
Jonathan Weichsel: Sounds awesome! I know you beat out two hundred other actresses for the role. What was the audition process like?
Wren Walker: I was literally the last girl to audition. I found the ad on Craigslist and was stoked to see if I could be in a horror movie, since I'm a huge fan of the genre myself.

The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is part horror, part dark fantasy, part supernatural love story, and part haunted house movie. A film that tries to fit so much into a brisk eighty-nine minutes could easily wind up being a mess, but Sleeping Beauty combines its various genres and subgenres into something that feels like a coherent whole. The Curse of Sleeping Beauty might not fit comfortably into any one genre, but I say if a film works, it works, and The Curse of Sleeping beauty works.

Bite is directed by Chad Archibald, written by Jayme Laforest, and produced by Chad Archibald, Cody Calahan, and Christopher Giroux. The film stars Elma Begovic, Annette Wozniak, Denise Yuen, Jordan Gray, Lawrence Denkers, Barry Birnberg, Daniel Klimitz, Tianna Nori, and Caroline Palmer.
At a time when horror has become very experimental, it is refreshing to see a movie like Bite, which doesn't try to be cute, doesn't try to be clever, and doesn't try to be funny, but instead simply tries to be as good a horror film as it can be. While Bite might not be a perfect movie, nobody who calls themselves a horror fan will have any excuse not to enjoy it.

I have always said that it is very difficult to review short films, because you can hardly say anything about them without giving everything away. But, there are some shorts that are so good, and some short film directors who are so talented, that every once in a while I break my moratorium on writing about shorts and cover them.
Gigi Saul Guerrero is such a director, and El Gigante and Madre De Dios are two such films.

Harvest Lake is written and directed by Scott Schirmer and stars Ellie Church, Tristan Risk, Jason Crowe, Dan Dye and Kevin Roach. Producers include Arthur Cullipher and Brian Williams.
Harvest Lake is about a group of four horny adults who rent a cabin in the woods. Yes, this has been the setup for literally thousands of horror films, but in the case of Harvest Lake, the usual formula is thrown out for something completely different. There are strange fungi growing in these woods that have the visual and tactile qualities of human sex organs. These fungi fascinate and seduce our campers one by one, and ejaculate spoors into their faces that lower their sexual inhibitions and ultimately take over their bodies for the purpose of sex.
Although Harvest Lake is conceptually brilliant, it is also kind of a confounding film to review, because it...

The story behind B.C. Butcher has been making the rounds lately, and to be upfront, it is the story of how the movie was made that first got me interested in reviewing it. B.C. Butcher was written and directed by a seventeen year old girl, Kansas Bowling, in her father's backyard in Topanga Canyon. What makes this story stand out is that Bowling is nineteen now, and her directorial debut has been picked up by Troma Entertainment, a legendary producer and distributor of cult films that should need no introduction.

Over the past year I reviewed a lot of indie horror films, some of them really good, some of them just Ok, and some of them really, really bad. The following isn't exactly a best of the year list, because I haven't watched every single film that was released, played at a film festival, or completed filming this year. Rather, these are the best movies that I reviewed for MoreHorror.com in 2015, and are all movies that I can recommend without hesitation.
Mania is directed by Jessica Cameron and stars Ellie Church. Olalla is written and directed by Amy Hesketh and stars Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila, Mila Joya, and Erix Antoine. Being asked to write a spoiler-free review is always tough, because a large part of my job as a critic is to let you all know if the movie I am reviewing is something you'll all want to see, and a good critic generally does this by describing the film, and letting the reader make up his or her mind. When I'm limited in what I can say about a film, it limits my ability to accurately describe it. I don't think I am giving away too many spoilers though when I say that All Through the House is a Christmas themed slasher about a killer dressed as Santa who kills women and cuts off their boyfriend's penises.

Mad Sin Cinema and LostWitch Releasing are now accepting submissions for Snuff: The Anthology. From Shane Ryan, creator of the Amateur Porn Star Killer Trilogy, Snuff will bring to you the finest faux rape and murder scenes from around the globe. "The best part for the filmmakers," says Ryan, "is that we've worked out a deal so that even films not accepted into the anthology will get released on VHS and/or DVD through LostWitch Releasing (in talks with more VHS/DVD companies as well). It's win-win for everybody."

You can expect another three films from Hollywood’s youngest auteur, Jared Masters. He’s already made 9 features and the fact that he’s making another three for next year is not surprising. Some have called him the Prince of Horror Erotica or the Woody Allen of Horror, but his nickname is unimportant, the fact that cult film goddess Bouvier is coming back to the silver screen in Blood Tulip is important! She’ll star as Starla, a beautiful artist and model that must save her twin sister, who got kidnapped and sold into the Holland sex trade. She’ll also have to recover her uncle’s stolen 17th century painting.
It’s a picture bringing awareness to human trafficking and how horrible the holocaust was. The film also features Dawna Lee Heising and Anthony Usewicz. Plus, rumored to be featured are; Art Roberts, LeJon,...

I recently got to ask Filmmaker Reyna Young a few questions about her new film Forgotten Tales. You can read our conversation below.
Jw- What made you decide to make a horror anthology film as opposed to a narrative feature?
Ry- I've always had an anthology film in the back of my mind and wanted to make it a reality. I wrote my first comic issue of Forgotten Tales, Audition, years ago for Scattered Comics in Sacramento, and I will have a comic coming out based on the film and cannot wait for that. But I've always loved Creepshow and wanted to do my own anthology.
Jw- In Forgotten Tales there is a ghost story, a home invasion story, and a stalker story. Do you like to watch all different kinds of horror? What are some of your favorite kinds of horror to watch? What...

When you're a film critic, your inbox and Facebook messenger can get clogged with so many requests to review films that it can be overwhelming. I get maybe five or six requests to review movies a day, coming from everybody from professional publicists, to teenage filmmakers making movies in their parent's backyards, and everybody in between. And the thing is, you have to say no to most of these movies, because you know that most of them are going to suck and you'd drive yourself crazy watching them, and also because you simply don't have the time.
Still, when director John Stewart Wildman sent me an unsolicited email to review his film (how these people find my...

As you all know, I am a huge fan of the directorial work of Jessica Cameron, and loved her first feature film, Truth or Dare (review). Cameron is finishing up the final edit of Mania (Produced by Mem Ferda, Gunned Down, Pusher), her second feature as a director, and she took a few moments out of her busy schedule to answer some burning questions I had about the film. Check out the the first teaser trailer for Mania below the interview and details.
Jw: I know from watching movies with you and talking about them that you like movies with a lot of nudity and sex, and now with Mania it looks like you have directed one. What is it about nudity and sex in movies that you find appealing?
Jc: Ha Ha Ha! I can honestly say that no one has ever asked me that before.

Maggie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, and Joely Richardson.
Like many guys who grew up in the 1980's, I have been a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger for as long as I can remember. His films from back then are exciting, gritty, oftentimes dark, and full of some of the greatest action sequences ever filmed. Schwarzenegger made a real impression on screen in the 1980's. Sure he was a power fantasy for young men, but he was also a symbol of everything that was either right or wrong about the 1980's, depending on who you ask; the decade's excesses, its arrogance, and its exaggerated sense of American exceptionalism.
Critics claimed back then that Schwarzenegger wasn't a good actor, but you just have to watch Predator in order to prove them wrong. Acting is living and doing under imaginary circumstances, and Schwarzenegger, compared to the rest of the cast in that movie,...

The White Faced Man is a fifty minute long Diy horror-thriller directed by Luke Ramer and starring Gerald Prince, about a hit man who is only hired to kill scummy people, who learns that his wife is pregnant and must decide whether or not to give up contract killing. He goes to sleep, and wakes up in a nightmare version of his neighborhood where he and a neighbor are chased by "the white faced man," a supernatural killer with a scythe.
While Gerald Prince does a decent job as the lead, the supporting cast is a mixed bag, with the actress who plays his wife being the worst in the cast. The opening scene of the hit man doing his job is stylish, and the nightmare world is effectively surreal, just different enough from the real world to be unnerving, without going overboard. Interview conducted by Jonathan Weichsel

Awhile ago Jessica Cameron and I tried an experiment where I would interview her, but instead of conducting our interview sober like most sane celebrities do, we would drink throughout until we were both completely wasted. What you are about to see is an hour and forty-one minute drunken interview edited by Evan A. Baker from three hours of footage shot by a sober and very patient John Cox over the course of a four hour drinking binge.
The result is, to say the least, raw. Jessica and I both start out our charming and likeable media-friendly bests. But, we soon descend into drunkenness, and that's where the interview gets interesting. This is about the most real and unfiltered look at two public figures you are likely to find online. We fight, argue, and bicker over trivial topics, say things one really shouldn't say in a public interview,...

Back in 2013 I reviewed Found, directed by Scott Schirmer, after catching it at the 2013 Shriekfest film festival. Found, a dark, smart psychological horror film set in the 1980's, was by far my favorite film at the festival that year, and is truly one of my favorite horror films from this century. One of the highlights of Found was a film within the film called Headless. Headless, as featured in Found, is an unbelievably gory slasher from 1978 that inspires the real life murders in the film. Shortly after Found became the indie hit it deserved to be, Arthur Cullipher, the special effects director and a producer on Found, announced that he was following up the film with a feature length version of Headless.
Headless, the feature film version starring Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Ellie Church and Dave Parker, is kind of a strange vehicle to follow up Found with.

Spring, opening in theaters and VOD Friday March 20th, is a new film from Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, the filmmaking duo responsible for the strange, gritty indie gem Resolution, which I and just about every critic who saw it gave rave reviews to a few years back. Moorhead's and Benson's new film starts out with the same kind of grit fans of Resolution might expect, but quickly moves on to new, uncharted territory for the two directors.
Like Resolution, Spring is a mixed-genre horror film, but where Resolution mixes horror with indie-drama, Spring mixes horror with romance. After an American (Lou Taylor Pucci) loses the only two things in his life that are important to him, his ailing mother and his crappy job at a bar, he decides to take a trip to Italy in order to find himself. I have read a lot of online reviews lately bashing indie horror as a whole for being derivative, unimaginative, and amateurish. I have been reviewing indie horror films for years, and I have watched my share of knockoffs made by people with no knowledge of the genre, and “homages” made by filmmakers who follow the rules of the genre so slavishly that their films end up adding nothing new. Like these other critics, I get sick of it too. But every once in awhile I come across a great indie horror movie like Resolution directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, a clever, innovative, unique little film that slowly gets under your skin. Films like Resolution are the reason indie filmmaking exists.
