New York, Dec 8 (Ians) A team of US researchers has completed the first study examining levels of vitamin D in brain tissue, specifically in adults who suffered from varying rates of cognitive decline.
Researchers at Tufts University found that members of this group with higher levels of vitamin D in their brains had better cognitive function.
The study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, is the first to examine vitamin D levels in brain tissue and can help scientists further understand dementia and its causes.
An estimated 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, a number that’s expected to rise as the global population ages.
To find treatments that can slow or stop the disease, scientists need to better understand the factors that can cause dementia.

Adapting a beloved book series into a television show that doesn’t lose the author’s carefully crafted nuance is a tough job. Doing so while expanding upon that world and elevating the original work is an even more challenging task.
Yet “Three Pines” does both with aplomb.
“Three Pines” is based on Louise Penny’s award-winning mystery novels, which feature an array of quirky French Canadian locals who are constantly embroiled in another whodunnit.
At the heart of these stories is Inspector Armand Gamache — a crime-solving gentleman who is to fiction-loving Canadians what Poirot or Holmes are to the Brits (and perhaps what Benoit Blanc is becoming to Americans). Casting the inspector was key, but Alfred Molina captures his gentle essence with kind eyes and an observational stillness from the moment he appears onscreen.

"Your kindness is your greatest strength." Prime Video has debuted the main official trailer for a murder mystery series titled Three Pines, arriving for streaming this fall thanks to Amazon. It's a Canadian series based on a set of books by Louise Penny, which sort of sound like riffs on Agatha Christie and her Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. In this one, Alfred Molina stars as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. He arrives to investigate murders in Three Pines, a seemingly idyllic village in Quebec's Eastern Townships. He sees things others do not: the light between the cracks, the mythic in the mundane, and discovers long-buried secrets in the small town. Also stars Rossif Sutherland, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Tantoo Cardinal, Clare Coulter, Sarah Booth, and Anna Tierney. This looks like if Poirot was in Fargo, which should be the perfect pitch for audiences nowadays. "If you don't belong here, Three Pines will chase...

Prime Video has announced a premiere date alongside a new trailer for its upcoming series Three Pines, starring Alfred Molina. The 8-episode, one-hour drama series follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (Molina) as he investigates several murder cases that are happening in an idyllic Quebec village, finding long-buried secrets and facing a few of his own ghosts. “Assisted by his trusted team—the combative and troubled Sergeant Jean-Guy Beauvoir (Rossif Sutherland), the intelligent Indigenous working mother Sergeant Isabelle Lacoste (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), and the accident-prone rookie Agent Yvette Nichol (Sarah Booth)—Gamache and his group are initially treated suspiciously by the village’s residents,” according to the streaming service. “Yet despite the cool welcome, Gamache can’t help but find himself oddly drawn to this unusual place and its eccentric residents, including the owners of the bistro, Gabri (Pierre Simpson) and Olivier (Frédéric-Antoine Guimond), artists Peter (Julian Bailey) and Clara (Anna Tierney...

Alfred Molina is starring in the upcoming Prime Video series "Three Pines." It's an adaptation of the beloved and best-selling mystery novel series by Louise Penny, focused on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. There are eight episodes in the season, though the novel series is 17 books long. That's a lot of story to mine from. It's set in Canada, and the production was filmed in both Montreal and rural Quebec.
This is the first Canada-based production for Left Bank, which is the production company behind the Netflix series "The Crown," about the royal family of the United Kingdom. Production began on the Canadian Amazon Original drama series in September 2021. If you haven't heard of Armande Gamache, it's time to start reading, and watching when the series premieres. The Washington Post named Gamache the most beloved fictional detective in a 2021 reader survey. That puts him ahead of both Hercule Poirot from Agatha...

"Maybe we can talk about something else?" Mill Creek Entertainment has revealed a new official US trailer for the indie film Last Call, a small drama from filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019, and also played at the Dances With Films Festival. It tells the tale of a bitterly alone man, Scott, who calls the suicide prevention hotline, but accidentally calls Beth, a janitor. Last Call is a split screen real-time feature film. The entire movie is comprised of two single-take shots, merged together and without cuts as the film plays out with two camera crews in different parts of a city as we follow each character. The score for the film was also composed and recorded in real-time by Adrian Ellis to add to the ephemeral aesthetic. This innovative, gripping cinematic feat is anchored by two incredible performances by Sarah Booth & Daved Wilkins.

Where the hell do I even start with this review… I am sat here, about an hour after having watched Last Call. It took me about an hour to just relax myself, chill my nerves, remove my heart from my throat, for the goosepimples to die down and the hairs on the back of my neck to settle. Yes, Last Call took me down a path I am not overly sure I was ready for. A little while back I went to the cinema to see Joker, a movie that I have not been able to watch since, due to some of the content and how it hit way too close to home. Last Call didn’t hit me in the same place but my god did it hit me!

The Scarehouse is a solid contained horror film mixed with found footage when away from the main location. Production values are good and performances are commendable when it comes to the “why are you doing this to me?” scenes. Most impressive of all is Jennifer Miller (as sorority sister – Lisa Jenning). She can certainly throw a punch or two and proves to be an ongoing thorn in the side of our anti-heroes Corey and Elaina.
The movie opens up with handheld footage of a group of loud-mouthed, college sorority sisters dressed in their underwear getting ready for a night of initiation with their two newbies. None of these people prove themselves to be likeable.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by D Films. Director: Gavin Michael Booth. Writers: Gavin Michael Booth and Sarah Booth. Cast: Sarah Booth, Kimberly-Sue Murray and Katherine Barrell. The Scarehouse is a Canadian film from director and writer Gavin Michael Booth (To Hell, with Love). To be released in 2015, The Scarehouse involves a group of sorority sisters and a night of hazing gone very wrong. But, when does hazing ever go right? Elaina (Kimberly-Sue Murray) and Corey (Sarah Booth) are the new recruits and their task involves a lot of drinking and drugging. Their plan goes a little too far. Jail time serves to stir up their feelings of resentment, between the sorority sisters. A tale of revenge and torture, The Scarehouse offers a lot of horror during its female focused runtime. The film begins simply enough. A group of girls get dressed up for a night on the town.

D Films is planning to release the project in the first quarter of 2014.
Described as "Saw meets Mean Girls," The Scarehouse plot goes like this: When two friends open a Halloween fun house on Devil's Night it is all fun and games until their former sorority sisters begin to arrive. These six sisters are confronted by their past as the night spins out of control.
