Lucasfilm (via SFFGazette.com) has released a brand-new trailer and poster for the next live-action Disney+ Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew.

This teaser gives us a bit more to go on when it comes to the overall story set-up, as we see a group of kids meet for the first time in what appears to be some kind of youth detention centre. When one of them reveals that he found something mysterious in the forest, the new pals head out to investigate.

We then see this ragtag bunch embark on an adventure through the galaxy that leads them to Jude Law's mysterious Jod Na Nawood.

Law's character has been described as a mysterious drifter (who may or may not be a "new kind of Jedi") who takes the young heroes under his protection, but based on what we see here, his intentions might not be quite so noble.

On the night before the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, Hollywood arrived in Paris ready to party.

Charlize Theron, Serena Williams, Rosalía and Omar Sy co-chaired a Prelude to the Olympics event at Paris’ famed Fondation Louis Vuitton on Thursday, with Comcast NBCUniversal chairman and CEO Brian Roberts, Lvmh chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, Louis Vuitton men’s creative director Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour serving as hosts for an evening celebrating sports, culture, music, fashion and art.

Stars were out in full force at the event, with a guest list that included Zendaya, Mick Jagger, Jeremy Allen White, LeBron James, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg, Elizabeth Banks, John Mulaney, Judd Apatow, Steven Spielberg, Jon M. Summer is far from over, but Netflix fans hoping to plan their next summer movie night should be aware that several excellent movies are leaving the streamer in August 2024. Few people nowadays probably can’t say that they have a favorite film company because of how much the industry has changed. The film genre has become oversaturated with superhero films, leading most people to start a conversation by asking, “Marvel or DC?” We don’t talk about what other companies are putting out or even acknowledge the future films that are coming out. Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued getting good news this year, thanks to the 2024 Emmys.

After winning Oscars earlier this year, Downey and Randolph both received 2024 Emmys nominations Wednesday. Downey was nominated for best supporting actor in a limited series for HBO’s The Sympathizer, in which he plays multiple characters, while Randolph was nominated for best supporting guest actress in a comedy series for her role as Detective Dee Williams on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Additionally, Lily Gladstone, who was nominated for the Oscar for best actress for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series for playing Cam Bentland in Hulu’s Under the Bridge. Emma Stone was seen as a contender for best actress in a drama series for her part as Whitney Siegel in Showtime’s The Curse but was not nominated.

For this week’s column, I spoke to Dawn Baillie, who is responsible for, or who has collaborated on, some of the most iconic American movie posters of the last four decades, from The Silence of the Lambs (1991) to Barbie (2023). Sundance Institute announced today the fellows selected for the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native Labs. The Native Lab in New Mexico will support four fellows and two artists in residence, and the Directors Lab in Colorado will support the development of eight projects with nine fellows, with an additional three fellows also joining for the online Screenwriters Lab held immediately after.

For over four decades, Sundance Institute’s signature labs have provided filmmakers a nurturing, immersive environment to develop their projects and refine their artistic voice under the guidance of accomplished creative advisors.

The 2024 Native Lab, taking place in person in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from April 29–May 4, is designed for participants of Native and Indigenous backgrounds and focuses on centering Indigeneity in their storytelling. Fellows will build community and refine their feature film and episodic scripts through one-on-one feedback sections and roundtable discussions with advisors. Kerry Condon, who stars in ‘Skeleton Crew,’ shared her surprise about working with children on the show. She mentioned how this production differs greatly from anything we’ve previously seen in Star Wars.

It’s so great. I don’t even have kids, but I’d pay to see this. I loved it. I loved being on it. There was something about it that was so innocent and playful and lovely. People say don’t work with kids or animals, but I don’t know about that.

Gold House, the nonprofit organization that connects and celebrates Asian Pacific creatives, companies and communities, will hold its third annual Gold Gala on May 11, toasting a star-studded group of honorees.

Cynthia Erivo, Padma Lakshmi, Lucy Liu, Saweetie, The Sympathizer star Hoa Xuande and the creator and cast of Beef will all be recognized at the event, alongside Hybe founder and chairman Bang Si-Hyuk, Hello Kitty, producer-director Karan Johar, content creator Valkyrae, the Maui first responders and Team USA’s Olympic skating team.

When audiences seek movies based on brands, that usually means the likes of Marvel, DC Comics, and Pixar — not studios or distributors.

The exception is A24. It’s something acknowledged by its peers (however grudgingly) and among a growing section of younger cinephiles, for whom “an A24 movie” means something a little weird and potentially cool, maybe great — and reason to take a chance on going to a theater.

Alex Garland‘s “Civil War,” the company’s most expensive film (a reported $50 million) opens this week with tracking that suggests it could open to $20 million or more. That would top any previous A24 opening; its best is “Hereditary,” which opened to $13.5 million in 2018.

Garland’s film checks many of the boxes that have translated into A24’s success. Its director has a strong following, including prior A24 films “Ex Machina” and “Men.” “Civil War” also had a widely publicized festival premiere at SXSW last month.

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.

However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.

Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.

For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.

The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

The hotel employee checking me in was visibly excited. Leaning in to tell me something confidential, I half expected to hear Ryan Gosling was staying there.

“There’s an AI robot staying at the hotel,” she said. “It was just down here at the bar.”

“Does it have its own room?”

“I’m not sure if its–,” the woman paused. “Do you say owner? Handler? Friend?”

I hadn’t a clue, and still don’t. While breakthroughs in pre-trained large-language models are driving this artificial intelligence moment, one thing on display in Austin this week was the lack of words we possess to properly discuss it.

But discuss it we did at the SXSW Conferences, where AI was the topic dominating hundreds of panels, workshops, talks, and meet-up-sessions spread over 24 different tracks. We loved "Everything Everywhere All at Once" around these parts (you can read our review right here), but it seems like some folks have soured on the flick ever since it took home an Oscar for Best Picture. So it goes. The feature helmed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka The Daniels, is wild, unpredictable, funny, and emotional. Perhaps the emotional angle is what turns people off these days — it seems like anyone or anything who dares to express any type of half-positive emotion is labeled as "cringe." And that's a shame. None of this is to say you're not allowed to dislike the movie. To each their own.

But if you still have a place for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" in your heart, you might be curious about how the wild and crazy film came together. Or more specifically, where all of the over-the-top insanity originally sprung from.

Conversations about the future of artificial intelligence can be found all over SXSW this year — and not all of the festival’s attendees are thrilled with the idea. Specifically, the film and TV fans catching screenings of world premieres including “The Fall Guy” and “Immaculate” made their AI displeasure loud and clear on Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. The quick-turnaround video editors at SXSW cut a daily sizzle reel highlighting previous panels, premieres and other events, which then runs before festival screenings. Feeling freaked out about artificial intelligence? You’ve got good company, in the form of Oscar-winning filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

During a wide-ranging talk held at SXSW today (via Deadline), the pair (best known to fans and friends as The Daniels) returned to the festival that first debuted their Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to chat about a variety of subjects, including the potential future of Hollywood and beyond.

Per Deadline, the conversation “culminated” in Kwan telling the crowd how he’s really feeling about AI. In a word, terrified. “It’s magic, it’s going to solve cancer and bring solutions, it’s a powerful thing, but I’m really terrified of this new story,” Deadline reported Kwan as saying. The outlet added that, “Kwan described a situation whereby many are ‘chasing’ AI to stay ahead of it, ‘because you know you’re next.

The Daniels, two years after they world premiered Everything Everywhere All at Once at SXSW, and an year after winning a slew of Oscars for the film including Best Picture, came back to Austin, TX to give a multi-prong talk at the fest which culminated in Daniel Kwan exclaiming that he’s “terrified” of A.I.

“It’s magic, it’s going to solve cancer and bring solutions, it’s a powerful thing, but I’m really terrified of this new story,” said Kwan.

Kwan described a situation whereby many are “chasing” AI to stay ahead of it, “because you know you’re next.”

The Oscar winning filmmaker, appearing with his Everything, Everywhere co-director Daniel Schneinert, said that “we’re not at a place that’s disposable, (there’s) no longevity between employees and employers.”

Kwan said, “We’re not saying don’t use A.I. — I don’t believe in dogmas.
