Disney+ has announced details of its new Star Wars series “Skeleton Crew,” set to premiere in December. The series tells the story of four young protagonists who discover an old spaceship buried on their planet. They soon find themselves joining a legendary treasure hunt across the galaxy.
Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, “Skeleton Crew” follows the characters Wim, Fern, Kb, and Neel. Acclaimed actor Jude Law plays Jod Na Nawood, a Force user who may have connections to the Jedi Order. The series is set during the New Republic era alongside other popular shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.”
Inspired by classic adventure films from Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment, the show centers around an epic hunt for pirate treasure. Evidence points to a link with the infamous Xim the Despot, a legendary pirate from Star Wars history. Xim first appeared in the novel “Han Solo and the Lost Legacy.

"Be warned of booby traps, pirates, and mountains where none dare to go!" So says a mysterious, piratical voice in the latest trailer for Jon Watts and Christopher Ford's upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. And if that proclamation sounds a little bit like a line that could've come straight from The Goonies, then that's no mere accident — with their New Republic era yarn spun around a group of lost space-kids who encounter ne'er-do-wells, tentacled creatures, and an enigmatic, Jude Law shaped Force-user whilst trying to find their way home, Watts and Ford are going all in on the Amblin vibes for their first foray into a galaxy far, far away. Cue the synths, and check out the boppy new trailer below:
Now this is where the fun begins! This new trailer sees Skeleton Crew's central band of mischief magnetised kids — Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong...

Lucasfilm (via SFFGazette.com) has released a brand-new trailer and poster for the next live-action Disney+ Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew.
This teaser gives us a bit more to go on when it comes to the overall story set-up, as we see a group of kids meet for the first time in what appears to be some kind of youth detention centre. When one of them reveals that he found something mysterious in the forest, the new pals head out to investigate.
We then see this ragtag bunch embark on an adventure through the galaxy that leads them to Jude Law's mysterious Jod Na Nawood.
Law's character has been described as a mysterious drifter (who may or may not be a "new kind of Jedi") who takes the young heroes under his protection, but based on what we see here, his intentions might not be quite so noble.

Today we’d like to share with you just some of these conversations. The topics range from the state of indie financing, to adapting stories for our climate impacted future, to taking meetings in your local laundromat. Skeleton Crew is hopefully going to be a refreshing new take on the franchise that the fans will love. It will definitely be something new that live-action Star Wars fans can enjoy, as there is no other such project out there like Skeleton Crew; such stories could only be enjoyed by those who read the books or the comics until now.
The series will star Jude Law as a mysterious Force user named Jod Na Nawood, and a group of child actors. Their characters get lost in space and now Jod has to help them get back home in a world that is not really pleasant or gentle towards the youngest.
But, aside from having a big name in front of the camera, the series will also feature several major names behind the camera, as showrunner Jon Watts, best known as the director of Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man trilogy,...

Star Wars: First Skeleton Crew Trailer And Poster Introduce Jude Law's Mysterious Jedi Jod Na Nawood
We were starting to grow concerned about Lucasfilm's Amblin-inspired Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but the first trailer for the long-awaited Disney+ series has finally been released (via SFFGazette.com) more than a year after it premiered at Star Wars Celebration.
The footage is almost identical to what was shown in London; however, that was never officially released online, and it means many of you can now finally see Jude Law's mysterious Jedi, Jod Na Nawood, in action for the first time.
Accompanying the trailer is a new poster for the series which is spearheaded by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts.
Law recently said that "first word that comes to my mind" when describing Skeleton Crew is "joyful." He also shared that "seeing children in that environment in a Star Wars environment is thrilling and very, very unique."
"It is a fun place to be, the universe of Star Wars.

It centers around a young quartet, played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, who cross paths with a mysterious Jedi named Jod Na Nawood, who’s being described as a quick-witted charmer.
The trailer, while short, promises a bigger scope than other recent Star Wars series, with the look impressively cinematic. The series certainly has an impressive roaster of directors, including Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home), David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon), the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian) and Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters).
Here’s the official synopsis from Disney and Lucasfilm:

Disney+ has released the trailer for “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” a coming-of-age television series starring Jude Law that will debut on December 3. The show follows four kids — played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith and Ryan Kiera Armstrong — who make a strange discovery on their planet that they believe is a lost Jedi temple, but instead appears to be a crashed starship. The kids get lost in the galaxy and find themselves on an adventure, where they encounter Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, a mysterious figure who can command the Force — but may not be all that he appears.
Law presented the trailer on Friday during Disney’s presentation of its upcoming slate at the D23 Expo. The actor called the series “a timeless adventure story in the spirit of the Amblin coming-of-age stories of the ’80s like ‘Goonies’ and ‘E.T,'” and the trailer definitely evokes the light-drenched,...

“All Quiet on the Western Front” took the 2023 Oscars by storm, racking up nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The German film won Best International Feature, Best Score, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, but its BAFTA-nominated director, Edward Berger, was snubbed despite the Best Adapted Screenplay bid he shared with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell. Now Berger seeks redemption with his 2024 thriller “Conclave,” which looks like an early Oscar favorite according to our current Gold Derby odds.
“Conclave” is a psychological thriller based on Robert Harris‘ 2016 novel of the same name. In the film, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, where he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of The Church. It was scripted by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).

Summer is far from over, but Netflix fans hoping to plan their next summer movie night should be aware that several excellent movies are leaving the streamer in August 2024. Among them are an Oscar Best Picture winner, a new family-friendly classic, an ambitious historical epic, a clever teen comedy, and a trilogy that brought superhero fever to the big screen before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was so much as a twinkle in Kevin Feige's eye.
Along with the great films listed below, Netflix will also soon say goodbye to several other memorable titles, including the endearing stop-motion movie "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On," the star-studded Coen Brothers caper "Burn After Reading," stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," Jim Carrey favorite "Liar Liar," and recent Film Twitter main character "Miami Vice". Few people nowadays probably can’t say that they have a favorite film company because of how much the industry has changed. The film genre has become oversaturated with superhero films, leading most people to start a conversation by asking, “Marvel or DC?” We don’t talk about what other companies are putting out or even acknowledge the future films that are coming out. Also, the way Walt Disney Studios has bought other companies makes it challenging for the common audience to step out and watch anything else. However, one company has been talked about a lot recently due to the films they’re distributing or making, and it's the A24 company. For this week’s column, I spoke to Dawn Baillie, who is responsible for, or who has collaborated on, some of the most iconic American movie posters of the last four decades, from The Silence of the Lambs (1991) to Barbie (2023). Her work is currently the focus of an extraordinary ongoing exhibition at Poster House in New York City.I asked her if she would humor me by selecting her top ten movie posters of all time, now a tradition for this column. She most graciously accepted the challenge. Baillie’s top ten and comments are listed below in descending order. ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ is an upcoming live-action series set to broaden the Star Wars universe. It’s set for a 2024 premiere on Disney+ (no specific release date yet) and was created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford.
The series follows a group of kids, probably Force-sensitive, who must embark on an adventure to find their way back home after a mysterious discovery leads them astray.
Kerry Condon, who stars in ‘Skeleton Crew,’ shared her surprise about working with children on the show. She mentioned how this production differs greatly from anything we’ve previously seen in Star Wars.
It’s so great. I don’t even have kids, but I’d pay to see this. I loved it. I loved being on it. There was something about it that was so innocent and playful and lovely. People say don’t work with kids or animals, but I don’t know about that.

When audiences seek movies based on brands, that usually means the likes of Marvel, DC Comics, and Pixar — not studios or distributors.
The exception is A24. It’s something acknowledged by its peers (however grudgingly) and among a growing section of younger cinephiles, for whom “an A24 movie” means something a little weird and potentially cool, maybe great — and reason to take a chance on going to a theater.
Alex Garland‘s “Civil War,” the company’s most expensive film (a reported $50 million) opens this week with tracking that suggests it could open to $20 million or more. That would top any previous A24 opening; its best is “Hereditary,” which opened to $13.5 million in 2018.
Garland’s film checks many of the boxes that have translated into A24’s success. Its director has a strong following, including prior A24 films “Ex Machina” and “Men.” “Civil War” also had a widely publicized festival premiere at SXSW last month.

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

The hotel employee checking me in was visibly excited. Leaning in to tell me something confidential, I half expected to hear Ryan Gosling was staying there.
“There’s an AI robot staying at the hotel,” she said. “It was just down here at the bar.”
“Does it have its own room?”
“I’m not sure if its–,” the woman paused. “Do you say owner? Handler? Friend?”
I hadn’t a clue, and still don’t. While breakthroughs in pre-trained large-language models are driving this artificial intelligence moment, one thing on display in Austin this week was the lack of words we possess to properly discuss it.
But discuss it we did at the SXSW Conferences, where AI was the topic dominating hundreds of panels, workshops, talks, and meet-up-sessions spread over 24 different tracks. We loved "Everything Everywhere All at Once" around these parts (you can read our review right here), but it seems like some folks have soured on the flick ever since it took home an Oscar for Best Picture. So it goes. The feature helmed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka The Daniels, is wild, unpredictable, funny, and emotional. Perhaps the emotional angle is what turns people off these days — it seems like anyone or anything who dares to express any type of half-positive emotion is labeled as "cringe." And that's a shame. None of this is to say you're not allowed to dislike the movie. To each their own.
But if you still have a place for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" in your heart, you might be curious about how the wild and crazy film came together. Or more specifically, where all of the over-the-top insanity originally sprung from.

Conversations about the future of artificial intelligence can be found all over SXSW this year — and not all of the festival’s attendees are thrilled with the idea. Specifically, the film and TV fans catching screenings of world premieres including “The Fall Guy” and “Immaculate” made their AI displeasure loud and clear on Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. Feeling freaked out about artificial intelligence? You’ve got good company, in the form of Oscar-winning filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
During a wide-ranging talk held at SXSW today (via Deadline), the pair (best known to fans and friends as The Daniels) returned to the festival that first debuted their Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to chat about a variety of subjects, including the potential future of Hollywood and beyond.
Per Deadline, the conversation “culminated” in Kwan telling the crowd how he’s really feeling about AI. In a word, terrified. “It’s magic, it’s going to solve cancer and bring solutions, it’s a powerful thing, but I’m really terrified of this new story,” Deadline reported Kwan as saying. The outlet added that, “Kwan described a situation whereby many are ‘chasing’ AI to stay ahead of it, ‘because you know you’re next.
