Among the new releases this week is Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, a home invasion with an alien twist starring Kaitlyn Dever and debuting on Hulu on September 22. With it comes the realization of how scarcely populated the sci-fi horror subgenre gets regarding the iconic Gray aliens. These quintessential aliens have emerged recently in the news, but their cinematic counterparts are rarer. That’s a shame, considering how effectively they induce terror, as evidenced by M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs (on Max).
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the quieter alien invasions. These sci-fi horror films revolve around the Grays and similar extraterrestrials that are more content to invade and toy with their prey quietly.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

You better watch out because Santa Claus is coming to town. This time, Santa’s a killer robot with a mean streak.
Joe Begos (Bliss, Vfw) is back with the holiday horror slasher Christmas Bloody Christmas, which will release day-and-date in theaters from Rlje Films and streaming on Shudder on December 9, 2022.
“It’s Christmas Eve, and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms (Riley Dandy) just wants to get drunk and party until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated.
“Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal, and violence, ultimately forcing Tori into a blood-splattered battle for survival against the ruthless heavy metal Saint Nick himself.”
Sam Delich, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Dora Madison, and Jeremy Gardner also star in Christmas Bloody Christmas along with Jeff Daniel Phillips and Abraham Benrubi.

Dementer
Stars: Katie Groshong, Brandy Edmiston, Larry Fessenden, Eller Hall, Scott Hodges, Stephanie Kinkle | Written and Directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cults are a classic horror film troupe for good reason… In Dementer our protagonist Katie (Katie Groshong) runs away from a cult and takes a job caring for people with special needs in a centre. Our opening scene of running naked through the woods, with some surreal horror elements is suitably tense and peculiar.
Our “low on background checks” special needs centre plays out in the manner of a fly on the wall documentary and it works rather well. Katie gets involved with the patients drawing and colouring. She seems to care about the people, and she is clearly off to a good start. She befriends one of the patients, Stephanie, in particular/ Sadly, her past seems to be just behind her. She has tried to mystically protect herself,...

A trailer was released for Gags the Clown in late 2019. Before that, the film has had a World Premiere (Cinepocalypse). Now, this feature is set to show internationally through Digital platforms. Based on a strange clown phenomenon in 2015 and 2016, this title brings a sinister clown to city streets as this crowd-pleaser terrorizes a small Wisconsin town. This title was developed by director Adam Krause, with Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman), Tracy Perez (Devil May Call), Aaron Christensen (Dead Weight) and Evan Gamble starring. A preview of the film's worldwide launch is here. In the trailer for Gags the Clown, reporters and police officers search for a mysterious figure. People are being attacked at night. And, this clown may have malicious intentions for a town incensed by a new, strange phenomenon. Jinga Films will bring the film to multiple countries this month and into November. The titular Artik (Jerry G. Angelo) is a comic book obsessed serial killer who spends his days sketching and his nights teaching his son Adam how to get away with murder, literally, until the boy befriends a mysterious man, Holton (Chase Williamson), who threatens to expose their horrifying family secret.
I’m not going to lie. There’s no way these days that I can give Any film starring Chase Williamson an unbiased review… The actor has been a solid performer for years, appearing in a myriad of genre films, including two of my favourite modern horrors: Sequence Break and John Dies at the End. As such I find myself enjoying films on his performance alone – and Artik is no different.

In his latest interview/podcast, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with Lucky McKee about writing and directing The Woman, collaborating with novelist Jack Ketchum (Rip) and the power of collaboration to making a movie. Lauren Ashley Carter with Jerry G Angelo in Artik
Three years ago my colleague Paul interviewed Lauren Ashley Carter about her striking performance in Mickey Keating’s Darling. Since then she’s appeared in the likes of Imitation Girl, Black Site and Darlin’, always making an impression, and now she can be seen as the loyal partner of a serial killer in Tom Botchii Skowronski’s Artik.
Though present in only a few scenes, the character of Flin is vital to the story, contextualising Artik’s actions and humanising a family on the brink. She also proves to be quite formidable in her own right. Two things persuaded Lauren to say yes to the role, she says.
“It was not a character that I’d ever played before and that’s something that I always look for, especially when I’m staying in the same genre, so that was the...

Epic Pictures + Dread have unveiled the first official trailer for a new serial killer thriller titled Artik, which just premiered at the Popcorn Frights Film Fest in Florida. This indie film is a "shockingly violent and very engaging" serial killer horror about a comic book obsessed murderer who teaches his son how to get away with all the killings. That is, until he befriends a mysterious man who threatens to expose everything. Chase Williamson stars as Holton Shudcase, with Jerry G. Angelo as "Artik", plus a small cast including Lauren Ashley Carter, Matt Mercer, David Robbins, and Gavin White. This definitely looks like it's only for die-hard horror fans who can stomach this kind of violence. Featuring a very colorful poster by artist Christopher Shy - which you can see below. One of this year’s Frightfest World Premieres, Black Site had people excited with only its description promising John Carpenter-esque action… Which is all I needed to hear to give it a watch. In truth, despite despite this playing at Frighfest, it’s not really a horror movie. The sci-fi elements more than make it worthy of being shown at one of the World’s leading genre festivals though.
The sci-fi here feels very Lovecraftian, involving elder gods that are living on Earth being captured and held at the Artemis Black Site until they are not needed any more and are sent back from where they originally came. It all feels very much...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

With the success of last year’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It, I think most of us knew we’d be seeing a new wave of clown-themed movies coming at us, since filmmaking is often about embracing trends. So, when I read that the indie horror film Gags would be venturing into some atypical territory by exploring that weird creepy clown phenomena happening around the country in recent years, I was more than intrigued. Unfortunately, Gags spends a little too much time worrying about other characters and not nearly enough time with its mysterious eponymous jokester, ultimately making Gags an underwhelming experience that never quite lives up to its potential.
Following the events of one night in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Gags introduces us to its twisted titular character as he stalks some folks on their way to their car in an otherwise empty parking garage. From there, we begin following various groups,...

In 2016, throughout Wisconsin, several clowns were sighted around the state. The figures would appear in alleys or dark spaces, holding black balloons. These sightings were part of the clown roaming craze, which took place throughout the year. Some of these sightings were part of director Adam Krause's publicity stunt, which hoped to draw attention to his horror short "Gags." In 2018, this short film has been developed into a feature film. This title will have its World Premiere at the Cinepocalypse Film Festival, in Chicago, Illinois. The film stars: Lauren Ashley Carter, Tracy Perez (Devil May Call), Aaron Christensen and Evan Gamble. To show in late June, a preview of the feature film Gags is hosted here. The film is an anthology. There are at least four tales, which cover socio-political issues. The short films loosely follow: a reporter, a right wing podcast pundit, a pair of cops and a trio of troublemaking teens.

One of the more unique films I've seen lately is Natasha Kermani's Imitation Girl, a sci-fi indie drama that's made a splash on the festival circuit. The film stars Lauren Ashley Carter (Premium Rush, Darling, Jug Face) in dual roles --- one as Julianna, an adult film star who's beginning to question her career, and the other as an alien who's taken on Julianna's form. The film has some great reviews online, from blogs to IMDb, and it's easy to see why. It's impeccably made, doesn't overexplain its plot, and is beautifully shot. I spoke to director Natasha Kermani on her feature debut and what that took --- from working with Lewis Black to shooting in uncooperative weather to nabbing an Emmy-winning cinematographer. Imitation Girl is a striking...

"I'm looking for a traveling companion." Epic Pictures Releasing has unveiled the first official trailer for a "mind-bending", psychological sci-fi thriller titled Imitation Girl, made by writer and director Natasha Kermani. Imitation Girl stars Lauren Ashley Carter (seen in the films Darling, King Rat) as a wandering space alien who lands in the middle of the New Mexico desert and takes on the form of another woman (hence the imitation). Her counterpart is a former concert pianist living in New York City. Eventually their paths will cross, as an exploration of two lost souls. The cast includes Neimah Djourabchi, Adam David Thompson, Catherine Mary Stewart, Stefanie Woodburn, Sanam Erfani, and Kevin O'Rourke. This looks a bit too bland for my tastes. Not enough real, edgy sci-fi, just some ideas but nothing tangible. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Natasha Kermani's Imitation Girl, direct from YouTube: When an alien...
