The latest NCIS series follows the origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs joining the military law enforcement organization. As an origin story, Mark Harmon couldn’t play the role, and the series had to find a young actor to play the role. That ended up going to Austin Stowell, and Harmon seems happy with the choice.
Here is what Harmon had to say about Stowell’s casting and his thoughts on narrating the series.
Mark Harmon Talks NCIS: Origins Casting Process
Mark Harmon is still an executive producer for the NCIS franchise. As a result, he has a heavy hand in everything from casting to the storylines. He was also one of the people who helped pick out who played the younger version of his character. It was a process that Harmon said he loved.

“Incognito,” the sixth episode of NCIS: Origins, attempts to give Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) his first undercover moment, a situation seemingly ripe with potential for awkward humor and fish-out-of-water shenanigans. Yet, while Gibbs’s undercover foray into a world of smoky backrooms and shady characters certainly delivers a few wry smiles, it’s Lala (Mariel Molino) […]

Note: This story contains spoilers from “NCIS: Origins” Episode 6.
“NCIS: Origins” shared a glimpse inside Lala Dominguez’s armor during an action-packed Episode 6, while adding more layers to her blossoming connection with Gibbs.
The CBS prequel series went undercover with Monday’s new episode, titled “Incognito,” while also putting the spotlight on the female Nis special agent played by Mariel Molino. It’s been established that Lala developed a special bond with Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) at this time in his life, but this hour focused on her mindset while navigating the toxic boys’ club within her workplace and feeling uneasy at home.
“With what we’ve filmed so far, her feelings toward Gibbs are starting to really get deeper, and that starts to get scarier for her,” Molino told TheWrap about what’s to come. “But it is evolving in a really lovely way because it’s coming...

How do you take an already ridiculously attractive cast like the stars of NCIS: Origins and make them even shinier? Throw them into formal wear and send them out for a night on the town.
That’s what “Incognito” is serving viewers in its promo. However, the main thing to take away is the clear spotlight on Special Agent Lala Dominguez.
Since the start of NCIS: Origins, fans have been eagerly awaiting to see when Lala and Gibbs’s stories would, shall we say, entangle. Her character also hasn’t been developed nearly as much as others.
(Erik Voake/CBS)
Hopefully, now halfway through the premiere season of NCIS: Origins, the writers will connect the dots and explain how this is also “the story of her.” I can still hear Mark Harmon.

The NCIS franchise has continued its dynasty, striking more gold with NCIS: Origins.
In fact, the compelling prequel has scored a full-season order, to my absolute delight, at a time when the television landscape and its offerings seem bleak.
NCIS: Origins works for so many reasons: focusing on young Leroy Jethro Gibbs when NCIS still went by Nis, exploring his grief after the recent loss of his wife and daughter, and kickass ’90s needledrops.
(Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS)
But the thing about Origins is that it doesn’t feel like Gibbs’ show at all.
And shockingly, that’s the best thing about it.
The series manages to utilize the stalwart, most renowned character of the NCIS universe, Gibbs, as a Trojan Horse to tell Mike Franks’ story, and I love every damn second of it.

It’s an exciting day for NCIS: Origins fans. CBS has given the new drama an extended greenlight during its first season.
CBS originally ordered 13 episodes of NCIS: Origins, giving the drama a chance to succeed on Monday nights.
Having NCIS as a lead-in and working with familiar characters (like Young Gibbs and Young Mike Franks) has worked well.
The new show from the NCIS Universe is based in 1991, years before Mark Harmon began playing Gibbs on NCIS.
Sean Harmon’s idea was to do a prequel show, and he serves as an Executive Producer while his dad (Mark) narrates.
Sean played Young Gibbs during flashbacks on NCIS, but Austin Stowell now portrays the younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs on Origins.

CBS announced that NCIS: Origins has now received a full-season order.
CBS has increased its order from 13 to 18 episodes, picking up additional content for this spring.

Mark Harmon is not a part of the NCIS cast, at least not on the screen anymore. He is still the voice of NCIS: Origins, as he is the narrator for the prequel series that shows how his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, got his start with NCIS. However, Austin Stowell is now playing the younger version of the character.
Harmon is still a big part of the franchise and has a large say over what happens in the television series he helped turn into a juggernaut. Here is what you need to know.

There will be no chilling out or calming down on NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 5. Someone has made the dire mistake of getting Mike Franks worked up in a bad way.
Long-time fans of the franchise are likely well aware of Mike’s gun-happy status, or “gun-ho” as it’s sometimes referred to. Get ready for a barrel-full.
Since the start of NCIS: Origins, the main focus has been on Gibbs and his struggle with losing his family. We’ve seen how the weight has taken its toll and broken his soul.

However, Gibbs isn’t the only NCIS character who gets a younger, shinier version of themselves. Then again, not every viewer has been so on board with the Gibbs casting.

Going into NCIS: Origins, we knew about Gibbs’ (Austin Stowell) and Franks’ (Kyle Schmid) long history. We’ve gotten a taste of it just over the first four episodes of the NCIS prequel. But in the show’s upcoming Christmas episode, airing on December 16, we’ll get even more of it. In “Blue Bayou,” as Gibbs prepares for his first Christmas without his wife and daughter, flashbacks reveal the unlikely journey that led to his first day on the job as a special agent at Nis’ Camp Pendleton office working with Mike Franks and Lala (Mariel Molino). “Gibbs, Gibbers, I love him. He makes more trouble for me than I’d like, but I think the best part about the relationship as it grows is the fact that we kind of know where it ends up, but we potentially have 10 years of geography to navigate that gets us from A to B,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoiler for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 4 “All’s Not Lost.”] NCIS: Origins dives into a dark part of Gibbs’ (Austin Stowell) past, when he learned of his wife and daughter’s murders while overseas in Kuwait in flashbacks. It’s at this point that you see, Stowell tells TV Insider, “he’s trying to take his own life. He’s seen how fragile life is and of course, he knows that just taking himself out wouldn’t solve anything, that there has to be more out there. We’re all doing that all the time, and it doesn’t have to be circumstances like this. It can be that we’re working a job that we’re not so happy with or we’re in a relationship that we’re not sure if we’re in love with the person and we’re looking for more and it’s okay. Could you imagine someone other than Mark Harmon playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the NCIS cast?
No, we aren’t talking about the Young Gibbs we have seen in flashbacks and on NCIS: Origins. We are talking about someone else nabbing the role on NCIS before Harmon got it.
Harmon starred as Gibbs on NCIS from 2003 until 2021. He left the show early in Season 19, and Gibbs was retired to Alaska.
Harmon also appears on NCIS: Origins, serving as the narrator and appearing in scenes where Gibbs writes a memorial about his exploits.
Actor Austin Stowell now plays the Young Gibbs on NCIS: Origin, taking the mantle from Sean Harmon, who had played Young Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks.
NCIS fans continue hoping that Gibbs (played by Harmon) will have a reason to resurface on the primary show in the future.
Who else could have played Gibbs on NCIS?

With the NCIS: Origins prequel, we’re seeing a Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) for whom the loss of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelley is still fresh. Over the first three episodes, we’ve gotten flashbacks as well as a heartbreaking sequence of Gibbs and Shannon in his truck talking about the rules. “All of those flashbacks, to me, are really tough days because it is, I guess, the representation that we all probably yearn for,” Stowell admits to TV Insider. “It’s a dream come to life, that so often we will dream about those who are gone. And when I’m performing those scenes, this is a reality at that point, I’m stepping into the dream and it’s really difficult to imagine those circumstances, to know that it will be gone afterward.” He continues, “It’s not like I jump out of that dream sequence...

The hunt is on when NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 4 makes its way to the broadcast spectrum. At least we finally have something to focus on other than Gibbs.
Not that the character hasn’t led an exciting series. However, it seems like everyone has Gibbs on the brain lately. The man needs time and space to strategize, but we’ll get to that.
NCIS: Origins is finally getting grounded with some intense cases. If there is one thing that brings a team together under one goal, it’s finding a missing child.
(Erik Voake/CBS)
Nothing gets adults moving faster than the thought of a small, innocent child snatched away from their parents. Maybe the team can finally function as a unit instead of one voice after another talking over each other.
Many viewers have commented that the team on NCIS: Origins lacks the same group effort that the sister series all have.

The new NCIS spinoff series NCIS: Origins is working to craft an authentic relationship between main characters Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his father Jackson Gibbs. However, some details depicted in Origins seem to stray from information given about the characters in the original NCIS series.
Origins portrays Gibbs and his father maintaining contact in the years after Gibbs’ wife and daughter are killed, which contradicts the original show suggesting the two had no contact for around 15 years after that tragedy. In a recent Origins episode, Jackson shows clear worry for his son’s wellbeing and even talks to Agent Mike Franks about removing Gibbs from dangerous field work. This depicts a level of ongoing involvement in each other’s lives that is inconsistent with their complete estrangement established previously.
An additional difference arises regarding when Jackson and Franks first met. While NCIS said this happened during a season 8 storyline, Origins...

There has been plenty of fat to chew on this week at MIPCOM in Cannes. The television industry is clearing a path forwards after a very difficult few years, and that route became clearer during the four-day confab. Below, we identify some of the key takeaways from the Croisette.
Squeezed Middle In Scripted
Channing Dungey
Conversations about the future of TV drama almost a year after the U.S. strikes ended dominated chatter at this year’s MIPCOM. What was being communicated to us was an extension of the ‘squeezed middle’ chat that dominated conversation in Edinburgh a few weeks ago. That confab’s chatter was focused on non-scripted, but these proclamations were concentrated on drama. Effectively, buyers are still looking for the odd splashy tentpole, maybe a buzzy limited series here and there, but are mainly beefing up catalogs with cheaper, higher-volume, bankable and returnable fare.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 3 “Bend, Don’t Break.”] One of the most iconic aspects of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) from the original NCIS was him stopping the elevator. It doesn’t take long for the prequel, NCIS: Origins, to have Austin Stowell‘s younger version, to do that for the first time. The moment comes while Gibbs is questioning a suspect in a case—in the same episode that, following a conversation with his father, Jackson (Robert Taylor), Franks (Kyle Schmid) puts him on desk duty. By the end of the episode, Gibbs pushes back because the job is all he has left. Below, showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal talk about having Jackson and Franks meet, that elevator stop, and more. One thing is for sure, the probie is not looking to make friends on NCIS: Origins. For that matter, he seems even less concerned with doing things by the book. Protocol be damned.
Even though the series follows the classic case-of-the-week format, it does an incredible job of integrating everything into the main plot.
Since the cat is more or less out of the bag, we can finally discuss a central plot point of NCIS: Origins. Don’t worry, though – I’ll save it for the end.

If there is one thing CBS is good at, it’s keeping audiences in the dark about what’s in store for NCIS: Origins. The promo doesn’t do much in terms of details, but there’s plenty of intensity.
Considering the nature of the series, we have a lot of gunfire and standoffs ahead of us. So, what about the show sets it apart from any other procedural on television?
For one, NCIS: Origins gives fans of the franchise a look into the back story of a series vet. That’s expected given the show’s premise.
(Erik Voake, Greg Gayne/CBS)
The series’ real strength will be in how well the characters are developed. And since NCIS has been going strong for over twenty seasons, the pressure is on.

The NCIS: Origins series premiere was a fun surprise for long-time NCIS fans. The new prequel show aired its first two episodes on October 14, and the franchise took a new direction.
NCIS: Origins is set in 1991 and will tell stories about young Leroy Jethro Gibbs and young Mike Franks. NCIS fans know the duo well from the parent show, where their older version solved many cases.
Mark Harmon played Gibbs on NCIS; Austin Stowell now plays the younger Gibbs on NCIS: Origins. Sean Harmon (Mark’s son) used to play Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks, but he now serves as an executive producer of the prequel.
It seemed like Mark was done playing the character. Gibbs was retired to Alaska, and we last saw him bidding farewell to Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) after they enjoyed some fishing.
But NCIS fans who tuned in for the first night of NCIS: Origins...

NCIS Origins has already proven itself to be a bit darker of a show than its predecessor. It also explores a much younger Leroy Gibbs who’s in a state fans aren’t used to seeing him in. But Gibbs’ angst was something the show’s star Austin Stowell could relate to, as he had his own real-life tragedies to overcome.

Fans knew that Gibbs would be a bit of a broken man way before the first episodes of Origins aired. Not only is Gibbs younger and less wise, but the character has also gone through a horrific family tragedy. Because of this, Gibbs doesn’t have the same level of temperament that he’ll earn after years of life experience. In real life, however, Stowell also dealt with the loss of someone close to him.

NCIS: Origins premiered this week, and Leroy Jethro Gibbs was back in a very different form. Instead of Mark Harmon playing the iconic role, Austin Stowell plays the character as he first joins NCIS as a probe himself, and starts his career. However, Stowell isn’t the first actor to play a young Gibbs, as Sean Harmon played the character in flashbacks on the main series.
Now, Mark Harmon is explaining why Sean didn’t return to the role in NCIS: Origins.
Why Mark Harmon’s Son Isn’t Gibbs In NCIS: Origins
In the original NCIS series, Mark Harmon’s son, Sean played the character of Gibbs in flashbacks to when he was a young NCIS officer. However, with the new series solely focused on Gibbs’ start at NCIS, the show chose to go with Bridge of Spies actor, Austin Stowell.

As Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs solved naval crimes across twenty seasons on NCIS, fans came to know him as a master investigator—tough yet thoughtful, always getting the bad guy. But what set him on that path? NCIS: Origins takes us back to 1991, when Gibbs was just starting out following a tragic past.
The newest entry in the hit NCIS franchise, Origins premiered last fall on CBS, transporting viewers to Camp Pendleton in 1991.
