Every year, there are more bad movies made than anyone could ever watch in a lifetime. Between what is released directly to VOD or the many, many ultra low-budget flicks that make their way to Redbox via companies like The Asylum, it's overwhelming. But every once in a while, some of these B-movie exercises manage to break away and actually get through to people in a meaningful fashion. Such was the case with 2010's "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," director James Nguyen's ultra-low-budget creature feature that gained so-bad-it's-good cult status in the way few films can ever hope to achieve. It is probably near "The Room" in that regard.
Despite the cult status and midnight movie reputation, it seemed unlikely that it would spawn an entire franchise. And yet, here we are, in the year 2022, with "Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle" having recently premiered at Fantastic Fest, one of the premiere...

Man, Birdemic: Shock And Terror is one of my all-time favorite bad movies. It probably tops even The Room for me (and that's saying a lot). From the terrible, creepy romance between a Victoria Secret model (who got her gig from doing photos at a Rite-Aid) and her stalker; to the wooden "acting" of lead Alan Bagh, who has to be a faulty android trying to... There are films that can be called “so bad they are good” and other bad films that are funny to watch for all the wrong reasons… What camp does Birdemic: Shock and Terror sit in? That’s for you to decide. With a story similar to The Birds, Birdemic tells the story of two lovers Rod (Alan Bagh) and Nathalie (Whitney Moore) who find themselves caught in the “Birdemic” with birds of prey suddenly attacking a small seaside town.
It is hard to defend Birdemic: Shock and Terror, it just isn’t a good movie. I can see why some may champion it as being so bad its good, but it didn’t fit that category for me. This review isn’t going to be me bashing it though, because that would be unfair. Why would you consider purchasing the Blu-ray?...

Birdemic, described by director James Nguyen as a romantic thriller, is a story about a young couple falling in love against the backdrop of a batshit insane tale of a town under siege by homicidal eagles! Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (in fact The Birds actress Tippi Hedren makes a cameo in the film in stock footage), the film also tackles topical issues such as global warming and world peace, all wrapped up in a film so inept that you’ll leave the film with the hugest grin on your face. We’ve all heard the phrase “so bad it’s good”, well Birdemic is the epitomy of that phrase!
Where to begin reviewing a film like Birdemic? It’s script? Garbage. It’s actors? Terrible, however the blonde female lead (Whitney Moore) is nice to look...

Director James Nguyen’s “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” is either the dumbest movie ever made or a calculated slice of comedy gold. I honestly can’t figure it out. Regardless, the “visionary” filmmaker’s follow-up appears to be “Birdemic” on steroids. Instead of one goofy couple, you get two. In addition to killer birds, you get zombies. And that’s fine by me. The more the merrier. Now bring on the Blu-ray, already! I’m impatient! Check out this synopsis: A flock of eagles and vultures wreak havoc amidst blossoming romance in Hollywood, California, leaving bloodshed and destruction wherever they hover. The story features original ‘Birdemic’ survivors Rod and Nathalie, who are joined by new friends – struggling filmmaker Bill, aspiring actress Gloria and several other Angelenos they encounter as they battle angry birds and a host of new enemies. “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” stars Whitney Moore, Alan Bagh, Patsy van Ettinger,...

Birdemic: Shock and Terror
Written by James Nguyen
Directed by James Nguyen
USA, 2008
You have to respect an artist with a vision. Sometimes they make Dances With Wolves or The Passion of the Christ and are rewarded critically and commercially for their risky works of passion. Other times you get James Nguyen’s notorious 2008 film Birdemic. The film is an homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Al Gore’s Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Shot largely on weekends and funded completely by Nguyen’s day job as a software salesman in Silicon Valley, the film is actually quite magical for bad movie fans due to the tonal shift midway through. It’s kind of like two awesomely bad movies for the price of one!

A little bird dropped by our mailbox to let us know that the sequel to Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here), entitled Birdemic II: The Resurrection, will begin hitting theatres in June with screenings being held everywhere from Los Angeles to Paris, France. Said bird then exploded, much to our delight.
We'll have all of the official details for you as soon as possible. Just wanted to give you guys enough of a heads-up so that you can prepare your hangers.
Visionary writer/director James Nguyen said his inspiration for the film was the La Brea Tar Pits. “I went to the museum at the Tar Pits, which had an exhibit of ancient eagles and vultures,” he recalled, “and as I walked through it, I said, ‘This is Birdemic 2.’” He added, “The Tar Pits are a major hint why the birds attack La.”

Screw the 2011 Academy Award Nominations — I just learned that Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore, the stars of James Nguyen’s cult sensation “Birdemic: Shock and Terror”, will reprise their roles for the sequel. “Birdemic II: Resurrection 3D” begins shooting on February 4th, 2012, which means that we may get the sequel sometime before the end of the year. Given the original’s loyal and dedicated following, I seriously doubt fans will have to wait as long for the flick to find a distributor. “Birdemic”, of course, is Nguyen’s beloved romantic thriller that follows the adventures of a young couple and their blood-soaked encounters with loads of murderous birds. If the follow-up is anything like the first installment, expect loads of cheap special effects, cringe-inducing performances, and a plot that makes little to no sense whatsoever. Sounds like a good time to me! The trailer for the original has been embedded...

“Like Ed Wood, Nguyen is an auteur with a dream and while we may laugh at the movie, we can’t laugh at the fact that he got the job done…”
Birdemic: Shock and Terror
Directed by James Nguyen
Written by James Nguyen
2009, USA
On the list of movies so bad they’re good, we must now add James Nguyen’s Birdemic: Shock and Terror. The most recent candidate for the title of worst movie of all time, Birdemic has surely carved out a place in the pantheon of midnight movies along side such classics as Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space, Troll 2 and last year’s hipster cult sensation The Room. The Sundance reject soars above the terrible movie heavens, opening with extended slow scenes of the hero, cardboard-bland, dim-witted salesman Rod, driving across northern California in his blue Mustang. We meet his girlfriend Nathalie, a hopelessly vapid would-be model.

I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher[email protected] and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

Chicago – There is a fine line that separates entertainingly bad movies from all-out bores. “The Room” is a truly original, wholly accidental work of comedic genius that greatly benefits from the impenetrable strangeness of its writer/director/star Tommy Wiseau. The film is so funny in so many different ways that it could easy hold up under countless viewings.
“Birdemic: Shock and Terror” is the first film to aim for “Room”-like success with audiences, passing itself off as another unintentionally side-splitting travesty. Yet the picture is nowhere near as hilarious as it thinks it is. Filmmaker James Nguyen is a charmless hack who blatantly steals the plots and characters from classic Hitchcock movies. His copying of “The Birds” is so shameless that it recalls the scandalous cut-and-paste job done by Camillo Teti, who populated his jaw-dropping “Titanic: The Animated Movie” with an assortment of thinly veiled Disney characters.

While there aren't any horror releases by major studios this week, there is, however, one notable film that should make up for the drought we are having. It is a film that should be re-subtitled "Shock and Awe" as that was how our @Foywonder felt after viewing Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.

Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.

One of the greatest worst movies ever made, "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," comes out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow (you can also rent it from Netflix). In commemoration of this historic day, here is my feature on the film's New York City premiere in March of 2010.
A few minutes past midnight on Friday, a man in a gray suit and bright red tie took to the stage of the IFC Center's Theater One and, to the applause of the sold-out audience, proudly waved a wire coat hanger in the air like an athlete brandishing the Olympic torch. This borderline deranged behavior would only draw an enthusiastic positive response at two places: a Joan Crawford impersonators' convention or the New York City premiere of "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," a eco-horror romantic thriller that has been dubbed "the next hilariously great cult movie" by no less an appropriate outlet than Vulture.com.

February 27th, 2011, is a day sure to go down in infamy. What's happening, you ask? It's the one-year anniversary of the unforgettable Birdemic world premiere at Cinefamily. And now, one year later, director James Nguyen is urging everyone to relive that night with their own "Birdemic Fest".
Below is a video in which Nguyen encourages us all to host a Birdemic Fest in our living rooms surrounded by buddies and coat hangers (doubling this event as a beer party as well) to watch the greatest cult sensation of 2010. Birdemic Fest = Beer + Birdemic on DVD/Blu-ray.

Now, my guess is that this is not going to come out well - trying to recapture cult glory seldom does - but, good god, after the massive cult success of the original James Nguyen is gearing up a second Birdemic film and this time he's doing it in 3D. Alan Bagh, Alexandra Forsythe and Lyle Drucker will star in Birdemic: The Resurrection with the film due to arrive in fall of 2011. Ladies and gentlemen, the official synopsis:
A platoon of eagles and vultures attack Hollywood, California.
Why did the eagles and vultures attack? Who will survive?
High brow all the way, kids.

People say Troll 2 is the worst film ever made—or Battlefield Earth. These people have very limited experience in cinema, I think. If these two films are the worst ever made, what is the barometer for badness? If Battlefield Earth is the worst film ever made, then it must be the ability to completely forget a film after seeing it. If it’s Troll 2, it must be a bit of the hype surrounding it. I mean, the film does have a documentary about its badness and the career of its star. Or are all these people wrong, and is the worst film of all time Plan 9 From Outer Space? Hey man, there is some magic to Plan 9—despite its undeniable awfulness. What about The Room? Cool kids will revel in the absolute stupidity that is Tommy Wiseau’s first feature film.
I pose these very important questions because,...

[Cult goofery ensues, with this popular entry getting a most likely very busy screening at Fantasia. Here is Rodney's take on the 'film' from our archives.]
It makes sense that comedians Tim and Eric are supporting Birdemic: Shock and Terror. The film plays like a long-form version of a sketch from their Adult Swim show. The biggest difference is that the intent behind Birdemic probably wasn't comedic. Regardless of director-producer-writer-financer James Nguyen's original intentions, this is a film where doing the wrong things yielded the right results.
Rod (Alan Bagh) is a young software salesman living the dream in Silicon Valley. When he isn't making million dollar deals, Rod is running a green tech startup and daydreaming of early retirement. His life gets even better after meeting an ambitious fashion model named Nathalie (Whitney Moore). However, life in Silicon Valley is not as idyllic as it initially seems because Rod's smooth ride on the high-tech gravy train is interrupted by the mysterious appearance of disease-carrying birds.
The plot of Birdemic is like a maze created by a blind man.

One day, I am going to channel my inner Dante Alighieri, and like any good hack, copy his nine rings of hell from his “Inferno” to create my own categorization, “The Nine Circles of Movie Hell.” With this list, I will rightfully place all of the “Bad” Movies in the spot in which they are truly deserving of, with no sarcastic exaggeration utilized. Even something as disagreeably idiotic as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen would only be placed in the first or second ring, next to box-office bombs like From Justin To Kelly, etc. Further down the list, you might see something by Rob Schneider in the fifth or sixth tier. With no doubt, the 8th ring of Movie Hell would be occupied by championed crap-movies like Troll 2, and the Gandalf of trash, Manos: The Hands of Fate.
However, in the 9th circle of Hell, occupying the most important...

Birdemic: Shock And Terror
Stars: Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore | Written and Directed by James Nguyen
Terrible, however the blonde female lead (Whitney Moore...

There's something charming about the unflagging optimism and excitement of filmmaker James Nguyen. His third self-financed film, "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," was intended to be a terrifying thriller in the vein of his idol, Alfred Hitchcock. Instead, its unintentionally hilarious trailer has been making the rounds on the Internet and garnering attention from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, which called the film "the best worst movie of all time," and the hosts of "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!," who hosted the film's L.A. premiere. It's even earned comparisons to another film that built a cult following off being bad, Tommy Wiseu's "The Room."The 42-year-old Nguyen took four years to make his epic, which centers on a couple (Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore) attacked by birds of prey. He financed the film, which cost less than $10,000, through his day job as a software salesman in Silicon Valley.

The art that stays with us, that moves us, that captivates, beguiles and enthralls us, is the kind that goes to extremes.
No comedy is as funny as when the action therein is taken to extremes of the farcical and absurd. Film noir depicts human beings in their most extreme states of moral decay, asking questions of us as to whether we can be decent people in an indecent world. Superheroes inspire by operating on the extreme side of nobility. Horror films thrive by confronting the extremes of evil, pain and death and forcing us to confront terrors deep and even instinctual within our conscious as well as our subconscious.
The cinematic phenomenons of late – whether one would evaluate these pictures as “good” or “bad” – are no exception. The extravagance of Avatar’s fantasy is matched by the outrageousness of the financial and technical resources required to create it. The...
