Netflix has revealed the cast for “Department Q” from showrunner Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”).

The cast is led by Matthew Goode (“The King’s Man”), Chloe Pirrie (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Alexej Manvelov (“Jack Ryan”) Kelly Macdonald (“Line of Duty”) and Leah Byrne (“Call The Midwife”). It also includes Mark Bonnar (“Napoleon”), Shirley Henderson (“Harry Potter”), Jamie Sives (“Guilt”) and Kate Dickie (“Inside Man”).

“Department Q” is an adaptation of the novels of the same name from Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. They have spawned a successful Danish film series with more in production.

Written by Scott Frank, Chandni Lakhani, Stephen Greenhorn and Colette Kane, the series revolves around Carl Morck, a former top-rated detective in Edinburgh assigned to a new cold case whilst wracked with guilt following an attack that left his partner paralysed and another policeman dead.

Department Q, the popular Danish crime novel, has seen a film series adaptation since 2013’s Danish film, Department Q: The Keeper of Lost Causes. It would then be followed by 2014’s Department Q: The Absent One. Then, that installment would be followed by 2016’s Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith. Those would then proceed with 2018’s Journal 64, 2021’s The Macro Effect and the upcoming Boundless. Additionally, Netflix will be producing a series based on the crime novels.

Deadline has just unveiled the cast for the upcoming Department Q Netflix show. The series, which is based on author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s popular works, is currently filming in Scotland. Matthew Goode, who is known for Antony Armstrong Jones in season two of Left Bank’s regal drama The Crown, has been cast as Dci Carl Morck, along with Chloe Pirrie, who you may know from The Queen’s Gambit, plays ruthless and ambitious prosecutor Merrit Lingard.

Department Q has staffed up. Cameras are rolling in Scotland on the upcoming series adaptation of Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s hugely popular crime novels.

Matthew Goode, Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne and Kelly Macdonald are all on board Netflix’s English-language series Deadline can reveal.

The project comes from showrunner Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit). It has been written by Frank, Chandni Lakhani, Stephen Greenhorn and Colette Kane. Frank directs the first two of the eight instalments. Filming is taking place in Edinburgh, where the series will be set.

Goode will play Dci Carl Morck. After a violent incident turns Morck’s life upside down, the emotionally scarred detective is charged with setting up cold case unit, Department Q, upon his return to work. The film won the Bronze Horse for Best Film, while lead actor Mehdi Bajestani was named Best Male Actor for his role as serial killer Saeed Hanaei. The film was based on the true story of the so-called ‘Spider-Killer’ who targeted sex workers and killed 16 women from 2000 to 2001 in Mashhad, Iran. The film depicts a fictional female journalist investigating the crimes.

In presenting Abbasi with his award, the jury said of Holy Spider:

The Swedish-Lebanese actor makes his directorial debut

Swedish-Lebanese actor Fares Fares is to make his directorial debut with upcoming Swedish thriller A Day And A Half for Netflix.

Fares, who is best known for Westworld, Chernobyl and Child 44, will direct and star in the film alongside Alexej Manvelov and Alma Pöysti. Fares also wrote the screenplay with Peter Smirnakos.

Set during one hot summer, the story follows a man who takes his ex-wife hostage and embarks with on a road trip with her and a police officer through rural Sweden. It will shoot this summer.

The Swedish-language film is inspired by true events.

“Westworld’s” Fares Fares is set to make his directorial debut with a Swedish film titled “A Day and a Half” for Netflix.

Fares will also star in the feature alongside Alexej Manvelov (“Chernobyl”) and Alma Pöysti (“Tove”). It is scheduled to hit Netflix in 2023.

Inspired by a true story, “A Day and a Half” tells the tale of Artan (played by Manvelov), a man who takes his ex-wife Louise (Pöysti) hostage on a perilous road trip through Sweden with the police in tow. Police officer Lukas (played by Fares) is also along for the ride. Artan hopes the crazy summer trip will result in him being reunited with his daughter.

Shooting will commence in Sweden later this month.

Warner Bros. International TV Production in Sweden are producing the pic. As well as starring in and directing the film, Fares has also co-written the screenplay with Peter Smirnakos.

Netflix Greenlights Swedish Film ‘A Day And A Half’ From ‘Chernobyl’ Star Fares Fares

Netflix has greenlit A Day and a Half, a Swedish action film directed by, written by and starring Chernobyl and Westworld star Fares Fares. Fares will play police officer Lukas, tracking down leads Artan (Alexej Manvelov) and Louise (Alma Pöysti), a divorced couple on an emotionally-charged road trip when Artan takes Louise hostage to reunite with his daughter. The journey takes them through rural Sweden during a hot summer, all while having police on their heels. Warner Bros. International TV Production is producing and Fares is also writing alongside Peter Smirnakos. Netflix Director of Film, Nordics, Claire Willats, called A Day and a Half “in essence an intimate story about loss, lies, betrayals, love, prejudice and family.” Earlier this week, Amazon Prime Video ordered its debut Nordic original TV series Toppen, which recently entered production.

Exclusive: Betty Gabriel (Get Out) has been tapped for a major new series regular role in the upcoming third season of Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski.

Gabriel, who will play Elizabeth Wright, the Chief of Station, replaces Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who was originally tapped for the part last fall. Jean-Baptiste has exited the series over creative differences. Jack Ryan is currently in production on Season 3, and the few scenes Jean-Baptiste had filmed will be reshot with Gabriel.

Also cast as series regulars in Season 3 are James Cosmo (His Dark Materials), Peter Guinness (Cursed), Nina Hoss (Little Sister) and Alexej Manvelov (Before We Die) in the series, a co-production of Amazon Studios, Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television.

Screening Monday as part of the competition pack at Canneseries, which runs Oct. 9-14, is “Top Dog.” The Stockholm-set crime thriller is produced by Sweden’s Filmlance, the team behind acclaimed series “Bron” (known in many territories as “The Bridge”), which sold to more than 180 countries.

In “Top Dog,” middle-aged crime-gang member Teddy from Södertälje, a working-class city with a large immigrant community, joins forces with young attorney Emily, who works for an up-market law firm in Stockholm, to investigate the disappearance of the eldest son of a business tycoon.

Teddy, Emily and many of the other lead characters have secrets, which complicate the solving of the mystery, with many twists and turns. Emily is in debt and about to be made homeless; Teddy has a former girlfriend who is a cop, and wants to break away from the life of crime after a lengthy spell in prison.

Walter Presents has acquired Swedish thriller “Stockholm Requiem” for the U.K. and Australia from Zdf Enterprises. It marks the fourth Swedish drama series the global on-demand service, which specialises in non-English language drama, has picked up from Zdf following “Blue Eyes,” “Thicker Than Water” and “Before We Die.”

Walter Iuzzolino, co-founder and curator of the service, said “Stockholm Requiem” was “Everything you want in a Scandi Noir and more. Quintessential viewing for anyone who likes beautifully shot drama and a plot line that will keep you guessing.”

“Stockholm Requiem” stars Liv Mjönes as an unconventional criminologist and new civilian recruit to the police force, as she joins a less than welcoming special investigations unit and is thrown in at the deep end of a difficult case. Jonas Karlsson and Alexej Manvelov co-star.

The 10-part drama is based on the best-selling trilogy of novels by Kristina Ohlsson and adapted by Jörgen Hjerdt and Pauline Wolff.
