In a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Schreiber, 56, shared insights about his experience working with Kidman, 57.

In hindsight, Dakota Fanning’s line from that first trailer for the Netflix miniseries — “The key to this family is to just stay on the periphery” — said a lot. Though, maybe not in the way her character intended.

Neither the victim nor the murderer in The Perfect Couple were ultimately part of the core Winbury family. And ignoring those eleventh-hour revelations — Nicole Kidman’s WASPy matriarch revealed she had a previous life as an escort, where she met her husband, Liev Schreiber’s old money lothario, as a client — the clan emerged virtually unscathed. It was the would-be daughter-in-law’s maid of honor (Meghann Fahy) who lost her life and daughter-in-law Abby (Fanning) who was revealed to have done the deed in a wild play to make sure her philandering husband could collect on his trust fund.

In “The Perfect Couple,” Liev Schreiber stars as the picture of American aristocracy, Tag Winbury, whom Schreiber describes as a “combination of a deeply narcissistic child and a profoundly passionate and loving husband.” In short, Schreiber identifies Tag as a “douche,” which initially caused him to hesitate about taking the role.

“I had my doubts in the beginning — you know, the character’s such a douche,” Schreiber told TheWrap. “I was like, ‘Do I really want to do this?'”

His doubts were quickly quelled by his on-screen partner-in-crime Nicole Kidman, who stars in the Netflix murder mystery as Tag’s wife, Greer, the matriarch of the Winbury family. “The Perfect Couple” has all the makings of a prestige drama akin to the likes of “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing”: a star-studded cast, a murder mystery that unravels the façade of an upperclass community and, of course, Nicole Kidman.

But the Elin Hilderbrand adaptation had a much different start as a network pilot, which initially went into development at Fox in 2019 as a coproduction between Fox and SideCar. It was then SideCar’s Gail Berman who emailed Jenna Lamia about the potential of coming onboard as a writer — and Lamia was immediately sold.

“I didn’t even finish reading the email — I wrote back, ‘I am definitely the writer. You do not need to send me the book. I read it last summer when it came out … I’m a huge fan — what do I have to do to convince you that I’m a writer?'” showrunner Lamia told TheWrap.

Readers of Elin Hilderbrand’s The Perfect Couple are familiar with the story of Celeste, the book’s main character who is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. In the Netflix adaptation, though, the character — played by Eve Hewson — is instead named Amelia, and it turns out that change can be traced back to Nicole Kidman.

Kidman stars in the series as Greer, Amelia’s future mother-in-law who has spared no expense in planning her son’s wedding; on the morning of the ceremony, however, a body turns up on the beach, as the family’s secrets slowly unravel. There are a number of changes between the book and the show, as showrunner Jenna Lamia said Hilderbrand gave her full freedom to depart from what she had written.

Throughout the star-studded but overall flat limited series' six episodes, a handful of Winbury family members find themselves under the microscope as their long-hidden secrets appear to give them motive for the murder. One by one, their names are cleared until the series finale finally uncovers the real culprit for the crime and the motive that led them to commit the violent act.

The opening credits for The Perfect Couple are fun and cute. As Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals” plays, the cast of Netflix’s new limited series – from the police officers to the housekeeper to Nicole Kidman herself – perform a coordinated wedding dance on the beach. It’s the kind of clichéd bit one expects to see at a real wedding, and there’s something gleeful about watching this deep bench of stars and character actors shimmy and point their way through the routine.

It’s also tonally off-putting, though. The Perfect Couple is a soapy melodrama, but it’s also a murder mystery. By the end of the first episode one of these characters is dead, so while it makes perfect sense to open the series with this extravagant display of wealth, in subsequent episodes, including the killer-revealing sixth episode, the cute opening feels like it belongs on another show.

After Tag's public drunken outburst in the previous episode, the situation has gone viral online and Greer's in a public relations crisis. They plan to tell everyone that Tag has a drinking problem and will check himself into a program to receive help.

Relationship problems are going around, but not for Amelia and Benji who have seemed to patched things up but aren't getting back together. Thomas leaves early to "go for a run," but Abby lies in bed not particularly believing her husband. Of course, he meets Isabel at the Sand Dollar, and after their hookup, she asks him for her money. When he's later confronted by Abby, he denies his affair.

Amelia learns from Greer that Merritt had barbiturates in her system at the time of her death and shoots down suggestion that Merritt was a recreational drug user.

Now at the halfway point of the limited series, The Perfect Couple episode 4 begins with the Coast Guard searching for Will and Chloe since they have gone missing. Meanwhile, Amelia's back at the police department chatting with Detective Henry about more Winbury family secrets, and they are the juiciest yet.

She's brought the bracelet Merritt was wearing the night of her death, the one gifted to her by Tag. Amelia's convinced, or at least working on a hypothesis, that the whole Winbury family could be in on it since Tag knew Merritt was pregnant. The other bombs she drops are the NDA revelation and Tag's past affair gone bad with Will's French tutor.

Thankfully, Will and Chloe return home safely, and it's a relief for their families, but the trouble's not over yet. Will still has some explaining to do with...

If you thought you might have it all solved two episodes into The Perfect Couple, you should probably reconsider what you think you know. The third episode of the Netflix limited series, "The Perfect Family," introduces another potential suspect, as we also discover secrets from the Winbury family's past. With a family this rich and powerful, it might not come as a surprise that they've covered up bad things, and Amelia starts to realize what she's marrying into.

The good news about The Perfect Couple, Netflix’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel about a death at a wedding weekend, is that the finale is a blast.

The pacing is zippy. The solution is satisfying — hard to guess in the moment, yet perfectly logical in retrospect. And the tone hits a wickedly funny groove as the starry cast, finally liberated from the obligation to play their characters’ cards close to the chest, dive headlong into snark, cruelty or heretofore undiscovered levels of Dgaf.

Alas, the bad news about The Perfect Couple is … most of the rest of it. Though it’s not an especially long watch, at just under six hours, the road leading up to that ending feels so interminable that I cannot, in clear conscience, recommend anyone take this journey just for the destination.

Besides, huge swaths of the series feel repurposed from better series you may have seen already.

Of course, the whole series has revolved around the big question: Who killed Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy)? Early in the series, Merritt washed up dead on the beachper on the morning of the wedding between Amelia (Eve Hewson), Merritt’s best friend, and Benji (Billy Howle) at the Winbury house on Nantucket.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were a lot of people who could have been interested in killing Merritt. I don’t know if the actual explanation makes all that much sense, but we’ll roll with it.

Swarms of flying insects invaded Netflix’s red carpet premiere of “The Perfect Couple” on Wednesday night at the streamer’s Egyptian Theatre Hollywood.

If the hot and sticky weather wasn’t bad enough, the cast – including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Meghann Fahy – suddenly found themselves swatting away gnats about an hour into the carpet.
