It is safe to say we will likely never watch Mad Max: The Wasteland, the long teased semi-sequel/prequel set between the events of the original Mad Max trilogy, which starred Mel Gibson, and Mad Max: Fury Road, the one that saw actor Tom Hardy step into the Aussie’s shoes. Like the movie that became this summer’s criminally overlooked Furiosa, The Wasteland was developed by franchise maestro George Miller and Nico Lathouris, the latter of whom is a dramaturge Miller originally brought in to develop an emotional authenticity and depth to Mad Max: Fury Road’s screenplay.
Instead their exploration of the material and characters went so deep that Lathouris ended up getting a screenplay credit on Fury Road while also producing versions of scripts that became the first draft of Furiosa and the still as yet unmade Mad Max: The Wasteland. To this day, Miller describes Wasteland...

Call it a "Mad Max" rite of passage. Ever since director George Miller's 1979 original introduced the world to the utter absurdity that is post-apocalyptic Australia, the gas-guzzling franchise has all but become a genre unto itself. After five total movies, culminating with this past weekend's "Furiosa," audiences are now well aware of what to expect from these idiosyncratic blockbusters. High-octane action, poignant ruminations on the future of our species, and a motley collection of freaks, weirdos, and badasses are well worth the price of admission alone. As far as series traditions go, however, one deceptively subtle trope returned in full force for "Furiosa."
The "Mad Max" movies have typically brought back many of the same cast members in different roles for the various sequels. For instance, newcomer fans may have been surprised to learn that the man behind the mask of "Fury Road" villain Immortan Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, had...

One of the most anticipated prequel films of all time has to be George Miller‘s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. After the initial announcement back in 2010, the anticipation for the film only grew after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, and nearly 9 years later the film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it will exceed everyone’s expectations.
Based on the characters from Mad Max: Fury Road by Miller, the prequel film is directed by Miller from a screenplay co-written by Nico Lathouris and Miller and it follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is snatched from Green Place of Many Mothers and handed over to the great biker horde’s warlord Dementus as they make their way through the Wasteland and come across the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. In the medium of cinema, sequels still feel like a relatively recent phenomenon, especially as studios continue to seek to exploit intellectual property and squeeze as much blood (re: money) out of the same stone as possible. Yet despite the obvious capitalistic aims of film franchises, cinematic universes, and what have you, the tradition of continuing a story and/or telling new tales featuring evergreen characters is very ancient.
The "Mad Max" films, as conceived by the series' mastermind, George Miller, deliberately seek to continue those ancient, mythical traditions of storytelling rather than service more modern concepts of how to present a serialized narrative. Of course, this may not have always been the case, given that the original "Mad Max" from 1979 was made partially to exploit then-popular trends like the criminal biker film, the vigilante action movie, and so on. Certainly, beginning with 1981's...

George Miller, the director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is revisiting the on-set drama between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in his 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.
In a new interview, Miller recalled the feud between the stars during the film’s production, which resulted from Hardy’s tardiness.
“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”
Miller noted that things on the set gradually got better, adding, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.

Woe betide anyone who stumbles across the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special without any prior knowledge of the animated TV series, because it’s safe to say they’d be in for something of a shock. Created by DC animation veterans Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and written and exec-produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey, the show specialises in a raunchy, adult-themed and decidedly sweary take on the familiar DC Comics characters, and the Valentine’s Special pushes those limits to even further extremes.

New Delhi, March 4 (Ians) Filmmaker Paul Ws Anderson and his wife, Hollywood star Milla Jovovich, have collaborated several times on his films, notably the "Resident Evil" franchise, but it was their latest release "Monster Hunter" that tested the actress's patience.
She told him "this is the worst thing" he had ever done to her, claimed Anderson.
"Her commitment is always surprising. She always really gives her all to every movie she makes and this movie was a harder movie to make from the others we have done. Just because of the technical challenges that it threw up.I wanted to shoot in real landscapes and the landscapes I chose were in the middle of nowhere!" he recalled, speaking to Ians.

"Have you thought about some kind of rebirth?" ShineHouse Group has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Undertow, which originally premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival in 2018. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Miranda Nation, and is a complex, emotional story of two women whose lives become dangerously enmeshed following a pregnancy tragedy. Struggling to accept the loss of her stillborn baby, Claire becomes suspicious of her husband's relationship with a feisty young woman named Angie. The emotional Aussie indie film stars Olivia Dejonge, Josh Helman, Laura Gordon, Rob Collins, and Darci McDonald. This looks good but it seems to dip a bit too much into the intensity and outrage. We would've heard more about this by now if it was really good. Worth a look anyway. Here's the official US trailer (+ two posters) for Miranda Nation's Undertow, direct from YouTube: Undertow...

Congratulations. You’ve almost endured the hellscape that is 2020. As we look towards the final month of the year, things are looking brighter on the cinema side. Unfortunately, not the actual cinemas themselves as Covid rates continue to rise, but the December lineup that is mostly rolling out digitally is remarkably strong.
Just a note, we’re not including films only having a one-week awards qualifying runs and will return earlier next year for proper releases and we’ve already mentioned Sound of Metal and Mank in last month’s round-up as they got theatrical premieres then, but will roll out on streaming services this Friday.
Lastly, before we get to the rundown, we imagine Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will dominate quite a bit of conversation this month as those opting to consider their health over returning to theaters can watch it at home.

"To kill a monster, you need a monster." Sony Pictures has revealed yet another official Chinese trailer for Monster Hunter, the epic big battle movie based on the international video game series of the same name (created by Kaname Fujioka for Capcom). We featured the first full trailer a month ago, now we have even more gnarly footage. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. They must fight gigantic monsters of all sorts of shapes and sizes to return home safely. This epic new Paul W.S. Anderson movie stars Milla Jovovich, of course, along with T.I. Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Tony Jaa. This new trailer finally dips more into the cheesiness of W.S. Anderson's movies, despite the rest of it still looking pretty badass.

With one celebrated Anderson in filmmaking having to push The French Dispatch to 2021 and another Anderson getting a late start on his next film, 2020 is now the year of Paul W.S. Anderson, whose latest adventure film Monster Hunter, has been moved up to Christmas week as other blockbusters (namely Dune) have vacated the premises. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now landed.
Also starring Tony Jaa, Tip ‘T.I.’ Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Ron Perlman, the videogame adaptation has been in development with Anderson for much of the last decade. Judging from the trailer, the director is bringing some epic scope and pure popcorn-munching fun to his take on story. It remains to be seen how many of us will actually feel safe taking part in the experience come December, but hopefully the exhibition world is in better shape by then.

Milla Jovovich, we’re gonna need a bigger fire sword. The gigantic dragons and demon spawn-looking beasts in Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Monster Hunter” are gigantic and ready to go down.
The first trailer for “Monster Hunter,” which is based on the popular video game franchise, looks in some ways like one big long boss fight. Jovovich plays a human military commander whose team is teleported to an exotic planet overrun by all sorts of hellish creatures, and their only goal is to figure out how to get back home and close the portal gate from the other side.
“So what, are we like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ now,” one of the soldiers says as they stare down a monster that looks like a cross between a scorpion and rhino that’s just crawled out from underneath a sand dune. “This is officially above my pay grade,” another wise-cracking soldier says.

"Did you see that thing?!" Sony Pictures has unveiled the first official full trailer for Monster Hunter, the epic big battle movie based on the international video game series of the same name (created by Kaname Fujioka for Capcom). So this technically is a video game movie, but it doesn't really look like one. When Lt. Basically they must fight gigantic monsters of all sorts of shapes and sizes. This epic new Paul W.S. Anderson movie stars Milla Jovovich, of course, along with T.I. Video game adaptations can be hit or miss, but with much of the “Resident Evil” team behind “Monster Hunter,” the newest action thriller has some serious heft behind it. “Resident Evil” director Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with that other Paul Anderson) is overseeing a forthcoming adaptation alongside his wife and “Resident Evil” leading lady Milla Jovovich. Released in 2004, “Monster Hunter” is a franchise of fantasy-themed action role-playing games. Monster Hunter is Japanese company Capcom’s second best-selling video game, after Resident Evil. After churning out six highly successful “Resident Evil” films, Anderson is turning to the company’s other game for his next franchise. A newly released trailer promises plenty of action-packed thrills.

Some of the most iconic beasts of the “Monster Hunter” video games appeared in the official trailer for the film adaptation from director Paul W.S. Anderson, which was released on Wednesday.
Milla Jovovich plays Captain Artemis, a new character made specifically for the film and a human military officer whose team gets transported to a world populated by giant monsters. Her unfamiliarity with the strange planet helps the film simulate the first experiences of playing the video game for the first time, Anderson said during New York Comic Con.
“I came to the game not knowing anything about it. And as a stranger, I was immersed in this world containing these amazing landscapes and these amazing creatures that would kick my ass,” Anderson said. “That should be the filmgoing experience as well.'”
The trailer also teases looks at some of the games’ iconic monsters that will inhabit its movie adaptation.

Laura Gordon and Olive DeJonge in ‘Undertow’.
In crafting her debut feature Undertow – in cinemas today – writer-director Miranda Nation was driven to depict a complex and multifaceted relationship between two women – one that wasn’t necessarily romantic or sexual.
Set in Nation’s hometown of Geelong, Undertow follows Claire (Laura Gordon), who is still grieving the loss of her stillborn baby when she begins to suspect her husband Dan (Rob Collins) is having an affair with a teenager, Angie (Olivia DeJonge).
When Claire then discovers Angie is pregnant, she develops an irrational obsession that sees her lose touch with reality and put at risk both of their lives.
Produced by Lyn Norfor and Ep’d by Liz Watts, Prue Williams and Sheila Jayadev, it also stars Josh Helman, Martin Blum, Darci McDonald and the late Damian Hill.
At the heart of the film is a complex portrait of sexuality, loss and trauma.

Tackling Deadpool is a priority for Marvel Studios, with Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth set to enter the McU before the wider X-Men team. What this means is that Deadpool 3 is expected to have the job of setting up the mutant mythos in the franchise. And one of the most prominent villains of Fox’s X-Men movie series might just feature in it.
Our sources have supplied us with various updates on Deadpool 3 already, such as that it may include a couple of the Avengers as well as a few of the X-Men, and that it’ll release in 2022, which seems all but confirmed now. Today, however, We Got This Covered has learned from our sources – the same ones who said a Joker sequel was in development and that Taskmaster will be the villain in Black Widow – that it’s possible William Stryker could turn up in the film.

Titled after the Southern Italian tradition that made its way across the Atlantic to become a part of many Italian-American families’ Christmas Eve celebrations, Robert Tinnell’s adaptation of his own graphic novel/recipe book Feast of the Seven Fishes does well to center itself upon its food even if the people eating it prove the real focal point. It’s probably not a coincidence then that most of our attention is specifically spent on seven teens with a direct or peripheral connection to dinner at Grandpa Johnny’s (Paul Ben-Victor). What transpires wouldn’t be the same without each of them participating similar to how the meal couldn’t survive the removal of a single seafood favorite. And as the fish follow the baccalà’s culinary lead, the characters find themselves taking their cues from Tony (Skyler Gisondo).

Disarming and delightful, the sleeper indie comedy “Feast of the Seven Fishes” proves anew that the most universal storytelling is also the most specific. If your parents or grandparents were immigrants to the United States, you’re likely to recognize your family here, no matter what holiday you celebrate or what elaborate meals you cook to mark the occasion.
Writer-director Robert Tinnell, adapting his and Alex Saviuk’s graphic novel of the same name, takes some cues from “Diner” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and filters them through the Christmas and coming-of-age genres. But what makes “Feast” special is the details of character and time and place; many of the film’s biggest laughs spring not from one-liners or pratfalls but from recognizable human moments.
