James Hugh Tompkins began his career as a set designer and art director
in the local theatre in Youngstown and Niles, Ohio. In 1965 he moved to
Los Feliz to assist in the revamp and revival of the Pasadena
Playhouse. When the Playhouse closed its doors in 1969 he turned his
attention to Hollywood. James was fortunate enough to have worked with
Sonny and Cher, Olivia Newton John, Debbie Reynolds, Julie Andrews, and
a myriad of other talented entertainers of the 1970s. He transitioned
into print design and architecture which lead him to Washington D.C.
where he spent many years working as a designer for the Reagan
Administration. That in turn led him back to the west coast to work
once again with Debbie Reynolds on her fabulous sets in Las Vegas
during her return to the stage in the mid-late 1990s. He carried on the
end of his career in Las Vegas designing sets for the Nevada Ballet
Theater, Wayne Newton, Mike Tyson, and local companies and hotels.
