Canadian director Guy Maddin embraces absurdity. Along with his co-writers and directors Evan and Galen Johnson, Maddin has added to his surrealist oeuvre with Rumours, a comedy satirizing the G7 Summit. Bringing together a lauded cast led by Cate Blanchett playing the Chancellor of Germany, the film follows the seven world leaders as they get lost in the woods amidst a world catastrophe and simultaneously lose their minds.

As with any G7 Summit, the goal continues to be a vague “crisis” and an even vaguer “statement,” a cacophony of empty words, promises, and goals. We Live In Time, the best platform expansion of the year, grossed $4.2 million on 956 screens in week 2 for a $4.5 million cume. Newcomers Union and The Line fared well on one screen each, as did Goodrich on about 1,000.

Rumours checks a lot of boxes for me. It’s a weird, irreverent satire featuring the undead and a giant, unexplained brain in the middle of the forest. Add in Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) playing dimwitted politicians and the case for it gets even stronger. Despite all of this, the movie, directed by the trio of Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, felt flat. The sluggish pace and extremely dry sense of humor and delivery will likely make this a challenging watch for most casual viewers.

Rumours.Rumours (2024), codirected by Guy Maddin and brothers Evan and Galen Johnson, follows the world leaders at a G7 summit as they draft a provisional statement concerning an unspecified global crisis. The film finds Maddin operating in a different vein of artifice than the chaotic pastiches of early filmic techniques that characterize much of his previous work. In Rumours, high-key lighting blasts an antiseptic aura, and the babbly performances are urbane to the point of uncanniness (Charles Dance plays the US president with an unexplained British accent). However, the heads of state soon wander into more familiar Maddin territory. Stumbling through the woods, they encounter surreal and fleshy aberrations: self-pleasuring bog mummies, a gargantuan brain, et cetera. In a classic The Exterminating Angel (1962) conundrum, the figureheads drift through an inescapable liminal space, forced to abandon their mannered etiquettes and self-interrogate. Picture Raúl Ruiz’s The Territory (1981), if transposed into the sphere of international politics.

Today was Cate Blanchett day at the San Sebastian Film Festival as the two-time Oscar winner cruised into town to receive the Spanish festival’s Donostia Award for career achievement.

The excitement in San Sebastian was strong. The festival even sent an email updating delegates that Blanchett’s arrival at her hotel — one of the main photo ops at this fest — had been pushed back a couple of hours.

Luckily for the gang of fans waiting outside the festival’s main Kursaal Auditorium — a beautiful, brutalist structure — Blanchett didn’t disappoint. The Aussie actor arrived at this evening’s award ceremony with her Disclaimer writer-director Alfonso Cuarón, who opened the ceremony and later handed Blanchett her gong. Cuarón spoke in Spanish for the duration of the ceremony.

Thanking Cuarón, Blanchett described the filmmaker as “one of the world’s greatest cinema artists.”

Matthew Rankin, whose “Universal Language” now represents Canada in the Best International Feature Film Oscar race, was joined by Canadian auteur Guy Maddin at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for a dialogue about their filmmaking.

Guy Maddin co-directed the 2024 film “Rumours” with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, and the political satire has played festivals far and wide, from Cannes to TIFF. Rankin won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes for his absurdist triptych comedy that riffs on Wes Anderson while homaging Abbas Kiarostami. Rankin’s Oscilloscope release (out early next year) connects three seemingly unrelated stories about people in Winnipeg whose ordinary lives take a surreal turn.

“I think in a strange way, everything is funny,” Blanchett said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “We are all absurd in some way, and we all think we’re the heroes and the tragedians of our own stories. Yeah. Sometimes you make decisions about what you can be involved in based on a lot of things that don’t have to necessarily do with choice. Sometimes it’s to do with whether it fits in with your kids’ holidays.”

“That’s how we got you?” Evan Johnson asked.

“Yes, I wanted to be in the forest at night for eight weeks in Budapest, and my kids were really happy about that!

The strangest thing about Guy Maddin’s Rumours, co-directed with frequent collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, might just be how relatively ordinary it feels. Eschewing the primitive style for which the Winnipeg filmmaker developed a following, as well as the nesting-doll structure of The Forbidden Room, his latest stages its genre-inflected political satire—one that’s equal parts Luis Buñuel and John Carpenter—in a surprisingly straightforward fashion. Maybe that’s because, despite still featuring a host of odd sights like a giant glowing brain in the woods, the film’s timely subject matter and heightened and portentous atmosphere reflects reality in an all too down-to-earth manner.

Rumours is set at a G7 summit, that oft-protested gathering of leaders of some of the world’s wealthiest democracies, during which they put on a show of global unity, if nothing else, given the summit’s lack of verifiable, concrete, real-life outcomes.

Unless you’re a major studio or willing to pay for a rent-spiked ski lodge––and even then––few festivals ring more exclusive than Telluride, which has the distinction / misfortune of firing the starting gun for fall festivals and that ever-deleterious phenomenon we call “Oscar buzz.” Their 2024 lineup nevertheless features some films of note: Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson’s Rumours; Alain Guiraudie’s Misericordia; Payal Kapadia’s All That We Imagine as Light; Sean Baker’s Anora; and Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple series Disclaimer.

The first teaser for Cate Blanchett‘s new movie has been released!

On Wednesday (August 28), Bleecker Street debuted the teaser trailer for Rumours, which the 55-year-old two-time Oscar-winning actress stars in alongside Alicia Vikander, Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira, and Zlatko Buri.

Written and directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the movie “centers on the leaders of the seven nations comprising the G7, who meet for their annual summit but get lost in the woods and must still draft a statement addressing a worldwide crisis,” according to THR.

That same day, Cate wowed in a champagne-colored dress as she attended the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held during Opening Night of the 2024 Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy.

Rumours will be out in theaters on Oct. 18.

The Toronto Film Festival has unveiled speakers for its 2024 edition next month, to include discussions with Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldaña and Steven Soderbergh.

Blanchett will be in Toronto along with two of her latest projects: Alfonso Cuarón’s TV series Disclaimer and Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson and Guy Maddin’s Rumours, which bowed in Cannes. The star of Tár, Blue Jasmine, Carol and Elizabeth will also be honored in Toronto with a Tribute Award, while also participating in the In Conversation With … event.

TIFF lineup speakers tend to have films in Toronto’s official lineup. Saldaña is also bringing to Toronto her star turn in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, while Soderbergh will be in Toronto to present Presence, his ghost tale starring Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kino am Königsplatz und organisiert von Kinoliebe präsentiert das Filmfest München am 31. Juli und 1. August zwei Kinoabend unter freiem Himmel.

Wie das Filmfest München heute mitteilt, steht am 31. Juli „Rumours“ (hier die Spot-Besprechung) von Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson und Guy Maddin im Kino am Königsplatz auf dem Programm. Die schwarze Komödie über einen in Deutschland stattfindenden G7-Gipfel, der in einer Chaosnacht endet, feierte in Cannes seine Weltpremiere und wurde beim diesjährigen Filmfest München im Wettbewerb CineCoPro gezeigt. Zum Open-Air-Screening auf dem Königsplatz, das um 21.30 Uhr beginnt, wird Hauptdarsteller Charles Dance erwartet, der in „Rumours“ den US-Präsidenten Edison Walcott verkörpert.

Juni feststand, hat das Festival jetzt weitere Cannes-Titel zu seiner am 5. Juni beginnenden 71. Ausgabe eingeladen.

So wird in Sydney „The Seed of The Sacred Fig“, der in Cannes unter Standing Ovations für den kurz zuvor nach einer Verurteilung aus seinem Heimatland geflohenen Regisseur Mohammad Rasoulof seine Weltpremiere gefeiert hatte und mit dem Spezialpreis der Jury und dem Fipresci-Preis ausgezeichnet worden war, in Sydney zu sehen sein.
