Cmc Pictures, the Chinese studio behind “The Meg” shark action franchise, has set plans for the global release of its John Cusack-starring cryptography thriller “Decoded.”

The film will release in Chinese theaters on Saturday and is headed for an international rollout at the end of August. Cmc Pictures will operate as the direct distributor in a limited number of territories and as the sales agent handling the rights in others.

The film has a strong pedigree and is on course to make a splash.

Directed by Chen Sicheng, one of China’s most consistently successful writer-director-producers, the film has a screenplay by Chen and Christopher MacBride that is adapted from a novel by the Mao Dun Literature Prize-winning novelist Mai Jia.

Set in the volatile era of the 1940s, “Decoded” chronicles the journey of Rong Jinzhen (played by Liu Haoran), an autistic young man with an exceptional talent for mathematics.

Since taking over in 2022, Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder has made the festival’s socially tinged retrospective program a hallmark of his tenure. Rounding out a so-called trilogy that started with queer representation then followed with a gender focus that put the femme fatale and scream queen under the spotlight, this year’s retrospective will tackle class conflict in cheeky terms, putting the screws to those swells with a 20 film program titled Eat the Rich.

“Genre cinema has always treated questions of predation, exploitation and everyday brutality with such complexity,” says Walder, “which makes it so interesting to how this theme evolves over the course of film history.”

“Flashback” proves it’s possible to create a Christopher Nolan-esque, fantasy-tinged narrative puzzle of interlocking realities without need of a major-studio budget or elaborate CGI. The film is to be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen. Whether Clooney is set to star in the thriller is anybody’s guess at this point, but watch this space.

George Clooney is in early talks with 20th Century Fox to direct Christopher MacBride’s science-fiction thriller “Echo.”

The movie is set up with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen. The production company has previously produced the science-fiction pic “Arrival,” which grossed more than $200 million worldwide for Paramount, along with the upcoming “Darkest Minds” for Fox and “Kin” for Lionsgate. 21 Laps is also an executive producer on the Netflix sci-fi series “Stranger Things.”

“Echo” centers on a drone specialist who has a psychological crisis after suspecting that his lover is not who she appears to be and wondering whether she has been replaced.

Clooney has directed six movies, starting with 2002’s “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” followed by “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Leatherheads,” “The Ides of March,” “The Monuments Men,” and last year’s “Suburbicon.” He received an Oscar nomination for directing “Good Night, and Good Luck.

Faux-documentary The Conspiracy pulls off two tricks that alone warrant 82 crisply compelling minutes of your time: it makes conspiracy theories fun again (or perhaps it just makes them funny, as well as quite scary); and it finds new life in the increasingly threadbare found-footage genre.

Two small-scale Canadian documentarians named Aaron Poole and Jim Gilbert – the actors' real names – are profiling a conspiracy theorist named Terrance, who bears a žižek-y resemblance to those derelicts you see waving tin cups on freeway off-ramps, but who is building his own unified field theory of every conspiracy ever out of newspaper clippings, push-pins and pieces of string on his apartment wall. The Conspiracy is directed by Christopher MacBride, who makes his feature film debut behind the camera to tell this tale. The story follows two guys named Aaron (Aaron Poole) and Jim (James Gilbert) who are making a documentary about people who believe in conspiracy theories. It begins as a basic documentary as we follow the shoulder’s of these two filmmakers as they speak with people who believe in these ideas. It is striking, to begin with, by how realistic these opening scenes are where the camera rests on talking heads who are speaking about the topic at hand.

NBC has given a put pilot order for a TV adaptation of Christopher MacBride's 2012 found footage indie drama "The Conspiracy". "Contagion" scribe Scott Z. Burns will pen and executive produce.

The original film centers on a conspiracy theorist who vanishes after a man is killed at an Occupy Wall Street protest, leaving behind his sister and an FBI agent to investigate.

Meanwhile, rival broadcaster Fox has given a pilot commitment to "Unthinkable," a drama series based on Mark Sable's Boom! Studios comic book. Producer Howard Gordon ("Homeland") and scribe Ben Queen ("Cars 2") will executive produce.

The story follows the pairing of a by-the-book FBI agent and a washed-up screenwriter who team to stop a plot to attack the United States that the writer and others concocted in a government sponsored think tank years earlier.

The Conspiracy Theory is the latest thriller from Resolute Films and Entertainment. This film was shot in a found footage or pseudo-documentary style and The Conspiracy Theory focuses on two investigative filmmakers. This title will release through video-on-demand and in select theatres in August, of this year. To expand on the story, a street preacher and conspiracy theorist is the subject of a documentary. Two journalists train their cameras on this preacher and they start to unravel evidence of secret societies.
