The work of British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, past and recent, merits even greater appreciation when compared to Chinese director Chen Sicheng’s ambitious but saccharine and mostly dull “Decoded,” an adaptation of the 2002 novel of the same name by Mai Jia. This cradle-to-grave portrait of fictional character Rong Jinzhen (Liu Haoran), a prodigious orphan turned valuable government asset in the 1940s, chronicles how his unique skillset ultimately helped clear the path for China to establish its own nuclear weapons program.
While the magnitude of his task and its global repercussions might immediately induce comparisons to Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” if one takes “Decoded” as “China’s answer” to the recent best picture Oscar winner, the moniker must come with the caveat that this means it’s a toothless film as it relates to moral ambiguity. It’s not a dissident work of art made to question the pursuit of such armament,...

Cmc Pictures, the Chinese studio behind “The Meg” shark action franchise, has set plans for the global release of its John Cusack-starring cryptography thriller “Decoded.”
The film will release in Chinese theaters on Saturday and is headed for an international rollout at the end of August. Cmc Pictures will operate as the direct distributor in a limited number of territories and as the sales agent handling the rights in others.
The film has a strong pedigree and is on course to make a splash.
Directed by Chen Sicheng, one of China’s most consistently successful writer-director-producers, the film has a screenplay by Chen and Christopher MacBride that is adapted from a novel by the Mao Dun Literature Prize-winning novelist Mai Jia.
Set in the volatile era of the 1940s, “Decoded” chronicles the journey of Rong Jinzhen (played by Liu Haoran), an autistic young man with an exceptional talent for mathematics.

Since taking over in 2022, Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder has made the festival’s socially tinged retrospective program a hallmark of his tenure. Rounding out a so-called trilogy that started with queer representation then followed with a gender focus that put the femme fatale and scream queen under the spotlight, this year’s retrospective will tackle class conflict in cheeky terms, putting the screws to those swells with a 20 film program titled Eat the Rich.
“Genre cinema has always treated questions of predation, exploitation and everyday brutality with such complexity,” says Walder, “which makes it so interesting to how this theme evolves over the course of film history.”
The far-ranging program tackles nearly a century worth of upper-class perfidy, beginning with Yakov Protazanov’s early-Soviet sci-fi “Aelita” from 1924 and running through to Jenna Cato Bass’ South African servitude creeper “Good Madam” from 2021. In between are landmarks like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope...

There was a time when conspiracy theories were entertaining. No, seriously, I swear it’s true! In fact, tons of films took inspiration from them, including Prometheus, Transformers 3, and even the very first Captain America, just to name a few.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Christopher MacBride‘s paranoid thriller The Conspiracy, a found-footage indie gem in the vein of Eyes Wide Shut, only leaning more into the horror genre.
The film was inspired by actual conspiracy theories, notably those surrounding the Bohemian Club and the Bilderberg Group, both secretive organizations closed to the public and made up of a who’s who of power players in international politics and business.
In the film, “When two young filmmakers (Aaron Poole & Jim Gilbert) select a crazed conspiracy theorist as the subject of their new movie, they have no idea the terrifying peril they will put themselves in. When...

Photo: ‘Flashback'/Lionsgate Films ‘Flashback’: Connecting Present, Future, And Past Director-writer Christopher MacBride’s second feature film, 'Flashback' follows Fred (Dylan O'Brien) in his 30s with a seemingly normal-bland life that is until he begins experiencing disorientating flashbacks to a time in which he has blatantly forgotten. In the start, these flashbacks show images of unknown people, more specifically the face of Cindy (Maika Monroe) but Fred’s knowledge of why or what is uncertain. Details uncovered within these trips to the past include the disappearance of Cindy, experimentation with a drug called Mercury, and a recurring visit from a man with a scarred face who speaks in broken words. “Flashback” proves it’s possible to create a Christopher Nolan-esque, fantasy-tinged narrative puzzle of interlocking realities without need of a major-studio budget or elaborate CGI. Whether it says much of anything else may depend on your attitude toward such labyrinths — whether you need them to actually go somewhere, or conversely find that surface complexity provides depth and meaning in itself.
Writer-director Christopher MacBride’s second feature (following paranoid found-footage horror “The Conspiracy” by nearly a decade) stars Dylan O’Brien as a young man haplessly trying to navigate a wormhole of comingled memories and visions perhaps belatedly triggered by teenage drug experimentation. Formerly titled (and still being released in some markets as) “The Education of Fredrick Fitzell,” the movie’s pileup of dislocating side-swipes from any tangible here/now is intriguing and well-crafted to a degree many genre fans will find exciting. "It's not what we think it is!" eOne Films reveals the official US trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Flashback, formerly known as The Education of Fredrick Fitzell when it first premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year. Dylan O'Brien stars as Fredrick Fitzell, who seems to have a perfect life with a corporate job and relationship. But after a chance encounter with a man forgotten from his youth, Fred literally and metaphorically journeys into his past, to figure out something that has been hiding there for years. The cast includes Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Hannah Gross, Emory Cohen, Amanda Brugel, and Aaron Poole. There's a bunch of strange things going on in here, not only flashbacks and timeline flips, but lots of odd characters around. Worth a look if you dig mysteries. Here's the official trailer (+ new poster) for Christopher MacBride's Flashback, direct from YouTube:...

Former Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien has been through a transitional and challenging period after a serious accident on the set of the final Maze Runner film left him with injuries that required reconstructive surgery. The actor’s recovery coincided with him reading a script called The Education Of Fredrick Fitzell, a low-budget, mind-bending drama written by Canadian filmmaker Christopher MacBride, whose previous credits include 2012 horror The Conspiracy. The material sparked with O’Brien in an intense way, he tells Deadline in his first interview about the movie, connecting with that period of his life and reflecting some of what he was going through. “I was a mess,” he admits frankly.
Inspired, O’Brien attached himself to the movie, which follows a man who, after a chance encounter with a person forgotten from his youth, literally and metaphorically journeys into his past. It marks an intriguing and sideways move for the actor,...

"She just vanished..." eOne films has debuted an official trailer for an indie existential thriller titled The Education of Fredrick Fitzell, which is premiering at the Sitges Film Festival this month. Which is why we have a trailer for this now. The film is the first from Canadian director Christopher MacBride since he made The Conspiracy in 2012. Dylan O'Brien stars as Fredrick Fitzell, who seems to have a perfect life with a corporate job and relationship. After a chance encounter with a man forgotten from his youth, Fred literally and metaphorically journeys into his past, to figure out something that has been hiding there for years. The full cast includes Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Hannah Gross, Emory Cohen, Amanda Brugel, and Aaron Poole. This is one of these hyper-stylized films that is trying to offer something more intense than another bland story, and I'll admit I'm certainly curious. Mysteries and unanswered questions.

Christopher MacBride's faux-documentary uses found footage to spin its tale of the shadowy Tarsus Group
Faux-documentary The Conspiracy pulls off two tricks that alone warrant 82 crisply compelling minutes of your time: it makes conspiracy theories fun again (or perhaps it just makes them funny, as well as quite scary); and it finds new life in the increasingly threadbare found-footage genre.
Two small-scale Canadian documentarians named Aaron Poole and Jim Gilbert – the actors' real names – are profiling a conspiracy theorist named Terrance, who bears a žižek-y resemblance to those derelicts you see waving tin cups on freeway off-ramps, but who is building his own unified field theory of every conspiracy ever out of newspaper clippings, push-pins and pieces of string on his apartment wall. When Terrance disappears, the more credulous Aaron develops his theories, while Jim the sceptic holds his tongue. Key recurring elements lead them to the secretive Tarsus Group,...

“For you see, the world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined…” – Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister 1874 – 1880
The Conspiracy is directed by Christopher MacBride, who makes his feature film debut behind the camera to tell this tale. The story follows two guys named Aaron (Aaron Poole) and Jim (James Gilbert) who are making a documentary about people who believe in conspiracy theories. It begins as a basic documentary as we follow the shoulder’s of these two filmmakers as they speak with people who believe in these ideas. It is striking, to begin with, by how realistic these opening scenes are where the camera rests on talking heads who are speaking about the topic at hand.

NBC has given a put pilot order for a TV adaptation of Christopher MacBride's 2012 found footage indie drama "The Conspiracy". "Contagion" scribe Scott Z. Burns will pen and executive produce.
The original film centers on a conspiracy theorist who vanishes after a man is killed at an Occupy Wall Street protest, leaving behind his sister and an FBI agent to investigate.
Meanwhile, rival broadcaster Fox has given a pilot commitment to "Unthinkable," a drama series based on Mark Sable's Boom! Studios comic book. Producer Howard Gordon ("Homeland") and scribe Ben Queen ("Cars 2") will executive produce.
The story follows the pairing of a by-the-book FBI agent and a washed-up screenwriter who team to stop a plot to attack the United States that the writer and others concocted in a government sponsored think tank years earlier.

The mockumentary is an underutilized method of delivering a cinematic story, especially in the gimmick-friendly horror genre. And I don.t mean like The Office, either. I mean films that generally blend narrative with different visual techniques to help the story feel more genuine and real. Movies like The Last Broadcast, Lake Mungo and Incident at Loch Ness are standouts not only because they.re arguably great films, but because there hasn.t been a flood of knock-offs like the proper found-footage genre has been hit with. It is with open arms that we welcome Christopher MacBride.s secret society horror The Conspiracy into our lives, now that XLrator Media has stepped in and snagged the U.S. distribution rights. The film was surprise hit at last year.s Fantastic Fest, and then nothing much was heard of it until now, though no release plans were mentioned in the release...
