The devil works hard, but Brian Jordan Alvarez works harder. For the past month, the creator, writer, director, and star of “English Teacher” has been dining out on the “I Love Your Daughter” meme to promote the FX comedy. The TikTok trend started in September after a user posted a clip from a Season 2 episode of “Gilmore Girls.” In it, Kirk (Sean Gunn), who has made a black-and-white short film, tells his girlfriend’s father, “I love your daughter.” When the father asks what he has to offer, Kirk says, “Nothing. Only this,” and proceeds to awkwardly dance. The sequence in the episode is set to Melle Mel‘s “White Lines (Don’t Do It),” but the TikTok edit swaps it out for Olly Alexander‘s “Breathe.”

The Best TV Comedy Actor race at the 2025 Golden Globes looks to be getting some fresh blood in the form of Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”). He plays Evan Marquez on FX’s freshman comedy series that takes place at the fictional Morrison-Hensley High School. Alvarez has skyrocketed up to fifth place to win this category, compared to two months ago when he placed outside of Gold Derby’s predicted nominees.
Alvarez’s likely co-nominees, according to our Golden Globe predictions for Best TV Comedy Actor, are Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) at 18/5 odds, Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 9/2 odds, Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 5/1 odds, Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) at 15/2 odds, and Vince Vaughn (“Bad Monkey”) at 10/1 odds.

Queer filmmakers, mediamakers and activists — alongside political commentators, influencers and public servants — addressed how present challenges in politics and the film industry have converged and how independent storytelling and social media can help respond to anti-lgbtq+ backlash as part of an hourlong panel at NewFest36’s second annual Industry + Filmmaker Day.
Nick McCarthy, director of programming at NewFest, kicked off the Friday event, held at the LGBT Center in Manhattan, which centered on the convergence of film, media and political activism. Kickstarter, Neon and The Hollywood Reporter served as event partners.
The candid discussion featured the voices of political and cultural commentary creator Matt Bernstein; drag artist, political activist and former city council candidate Marti Cummings; filmmaker, performer and culture critic Jude Dry; filmmaker and Ponyboi star River Gallo; New York City council member for Brooklyn’s District 35 Crystal Hudson; and Rajendra Roy, chief curator of film at the Museum of Modern Art.

When one door closes, a new one opens, at least that’s the case on Apple TV+ these days. A mere week after saying goodbye to the most recent seasons of critically acclaimed series “Slow Horses,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Pachinko,” the streaming service is welcoming the return of its Emmy-nominated comedy “Shrinking.”
In Season 2, the unique comedy about a recently widowed therapist (co-creator and Emmy nominee Jason Segel) who abandons traditional methods in favor of being brutally honest with his patients thoughtfully expands upon its foundation. The new season — the first two episodes of which are currently streaming on Apple TV+ — finds Segel’s Jimmy and his colleagues, Gaby (Emmy nominee Jessica Williams) and Paul (Oscar nominee Harrison Ford), digging deeper into their own issues, including the latter’s Parkinson’s diagnosis. With more laughs and a couple of new faces thrown into the mix, including Emmy winner and series co-creator Brett Goldstein,...

Michael Strahan seemed unprepared for his Good Morning America co-star’s recent remarks.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the GMA anchor appeared with his regular co-stars, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.
Michael had been away from the studio in New York on Monday after working this weekend on the West Coast for Fox NFL Sunday.
The former New York Giants star participated in multiple segments on Wednesday’s GMA, including a group interview with The English Teacher star Brian Jordan Alvarez.
However, just before that part of the show, he was caught off guard during the popular Steals & Deals segment.
The moment may have some viewers wondering if Michael isn’t fully embracing the “grandpa” title yet.

Are Abbott Elementary and English Teacher the Same Show? What’s the Difference? - Main Image
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary has grown to be one of the most popular sitcoms out right now, and it’s been getting a lot of praise for its very classic format which a lot of old school audiences really enjoy.
Enter FX’s English Teacher, a new series that just premiered this year from creator Brian Jordan Alvarez. The show has been getting some great reviews, but a lot of audiences have been saying that it’s kind of a knock-off of Abbott Elementary—but is it though?

The half-hour comedy is one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the year, and frankly, we’re not surprised. From a cult classic YouTube series to skits that would make “SNL” envious to an unexpected social media breakout, star and creator Brian Jordan Alvarez has demonstrated a unique comedic voice.

In the first episode of People Overheard Talking About FX’s The English Teacher, two hosts set the scene: They are at Pressed Juicery, listening to two moms talking about television.
“She overhears juice mom talking about this TV show,” one says. “And not just any TV show. She’s like, this is the best comedy since Seinfeld. The show is called the English Teacher. It’s on FX.”
“Have you seen it?” the co-host asks.
“No, I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard it’s supposed to be really funny,” she responds.
The eight-minute episode moves quickly, assuming the rhythm of any normal podcast duo engaged in conversation on their chosen topic. At times, the discussion edges into intense promotional material, singing the praises of English Teacher creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez.
“He’s got that, like… kind of awkward but, like, endearing energy,” the co-host says at one point.

In a TV production climate that saw a 20% plummet in Los Angeles last year and an overall drop-off of 40% since 2022, risky, large-scale prestige projects are no longer the name of the game. But Roku Media content chief David Eilenberg sees a way to keep “risk built into the system”: social media influencers.
Speaking at TheWrap’s annual Grill conference on Tuesday at the DGA Theater Complex, the entertainment executive posited that looking to “that convergence of the digital world with the TV world” and nurturing young talent is “one way to make sure that there’s still enough creative risk” in an industry that’s averse to taking any.
“It’s going to be interesting over the next five years to see some of the talents who came up via YouTube, came up via social channels, have their visions for what TV and film can mean to them,” Eilenberg...

High school sitcoms have always been a mixed bag, largely because the issues kids are dealing with at that age beg for a more nuanced take than the half-hour format can provide. Godawful shows like "Saved by the Bell," "Head of the Class" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" are the low standard a high school sitcom has to clear nowadays, so we need to count our blessings when something as wonderful as Mike O'Brien's "A.P. Bio" and the currently airing Brian Jordan Alvarez's "English Teacher" arrives.
Before those two sitcoms, the bar was set reasonably high by Gabe Kaplan's "Welcome Back, Kotter." Based in part on Kaplan's sitcom act, the comedian stars as Gabe Kotter, a former underachiever who returns to his old Bensonhurst Brooklyn neighborhood to teach at the high school that used to seem like a prison to him. It’s rare for a freshman comedy to find its footing as quickly as “English Teacher” has. Once that rhythm is found, it’s even rarer for a series to completely challenge that difficult-to-establish flow.
Yet that’s what Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX comedy does just five episodes in thanks to “Field Trip,” an episode that explores Evan’s (Alvarez) relationship with his best friend, Gwen (Stephanie Koenig).
“I was really excited and eager [for the episode], mainly because I want to give her depth,” Koenig told TheWrap. “[Gwen] is very positive and tries to see the good in things. But she’s also a person who isn’t at all perfect and gets sad,” Koenig said. “Also, Evan is like her favorite, favorite person. So if there’s any sort of trouble within that relationship, it’s like a bomb went off. It’s just nice to see that she’s a real person.

‘English Teacher’ Creator and Star Brian Jordan Alvarez Wants Gun Episode to ‘Surprise the Audience’
Brian Jordan Alvarez isn’t trying to start a riot, but if he were, he’d at least want it to be a funny one. Don’t get him wrong, the creator and star of the new FX high school comedy “English Teacher” wants his series to be a conversation starter, but in taking on tough topics, he’s mostly concerned with making audiences come together and laugh. Take the show’s most recent episode, “School Safety,” which deals with the school, located in the suburbs of Austin, starting a gun club on campus. Obviously, guns in schools are no laughing matter, but in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez admitted he and his writer’s staff knew there was humor to be mined in the varied reactions to a club like this taking root and how those reactions lead to even more outrageous outcomes.

Monday’s episode of FX’s English Teacher started with a literal bang — a deep, echoing gunshot heard by creator Brian Jordan Alvarez’s titular English teacher (first name Evan) as he walked to meet his classroom of students. Evan throws his hot coffee across his dress shirt and falls to the floor in a truncated attempt at crawling, then grabs two students from the hallway and ushers them to safety in a nearby classroom.
Evan is panicked, but the kids are unimpressed — apathetic, even —and tell him that the sound was not actually reason for emergency, but rather the standard proceedings of Markie (Sean Patton) the gym teacher’s student gun club.
The setup feels serious as these sentences come together, but there’s something about the pacing of its events that maintain the comedy’s lightheartedness; the audience knows they’re supposed to laugh, even before they know everyone is safe.

Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

Amazingly, before they co-starred together in the FX thriller The Old Man, Hollywood veterans Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow had never acted together before. And in the first season, they didn’t act together much either.

It’s time to add another name to the list of TV stars who gained recognition on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Brian Jordan Alvarez, who has popped on our radar thanks to his viral videos and appearances in independent web series, is the creator and star of the new FX comedy English Teacher.
English Teacher, which stars Alvarez in the titular role, premiered on FX on September 2. Early feedback has been positive, and some reviewers are already calling for the show to be renewed beyond its initial eight-episode run.
For those who have followed Alvarez’s career over the past decade, the plaudits for English Teacher come as no surprise. The ridiculous, over-the-top skits on his YouTube channel have attracted more than 90 million lifetime views, and he showed off his showrunning chops when he released the indie web sitcom The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo nearly a decade ago.

Saddle up, y’all, Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” is finally back in action.
After earning nine Emmy nominations for its excellent third season, including one for Best Drama Series and acting bids for Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce, the darkly comedic espionage thriller about MI5’s worst spies returns this week with its most personal outing yet.
In the new season, the first episode of which is now streaming, River (Lowden) finds himself caught in the crosshairs after his grandfather (Pryce), a former high-ranking member of the intelligence service who is now in the early stages of dementia, is attacked by an assailant impersonating River. As the younger Cartwright and the rest of Slough House attempt to get to the bottom of this latest mess, numerous personal and professional secrets are revealed that threaten not just our beloved, screwed-up heroes, but the whole of MI5 as well.

[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of English Teacher.]
In the second episode of FX’s English Teacher, Stephanie Koenig’s Gwen Sanders — a peppy history teacher with perhaps too much faith in her students — takes it upon herself to teach the school’s cheerleading team self defense.
Koenig, who also wrote the episode, got the idea from TikTok. She recalls one creator in particular who provides intricately detailed escape how-tos, should one ever find herself being strangled with a seatbelt in the backseat of a car.
“She’s like, ‘One! Two! Fingers up, one thumb out,'” Koenig tells The Hollywood Reporter as she reenacts the comically detailed instructions. “Move them here, wrap around and twist. Now you’ve got that — you can turn your head left!”
Koenig starts giggling as she marvels at the dissonance between the woman’s good nature in posting the video and the ridiculous complexity of achieving the escape. Koenig’s character,...

Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is going through it.
The high school English teacher in suburban Texas recently broke up with boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman), is under investigation by the school board for kissing him in front of students, doesn’t want to be a local queer hero, and is also expressly forbidden from dating fellow teachers, like handsome new hire Harry (Langston Kerman).
FX’s latest comedy stays true to its genre, with laugh-out-loud dialogue, casually outrageous characters, and scenarios that could be out of the sitcom handbook on the surface, but get sharpened to a 2024 clip by Alvarez and fellow writers Stephanie Koenig, Jake Bender, Zach Dunn, and Dave King. Jokes fly so fast that they could be improvised, setting the bar from the very first scene for a show bursting with humor even when the plot goes off course.

Hear that bell? Yes, FX is taking us back to school with the new comedy English Teacher.
Monday’s premiere introduces us to Evan, played by star and series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez, who grooves to the ’80s classic “Maniac” before heading into work (late) as a teacher at an Austin high school. He marvels to his colleague Gwen (Stephanie Koenig) at lunch that his students are “not into being woke anymore.” (“They’re saying the R-word again,” Gwen notes.) Gym teacher Markie (Sean Patton) then launches into a rant against Communist China, but they loudly remind him, “No politics!

When Paul Simms, the executive producer behind such comedy hits as “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” first stumbled upon Brian Jordan Alvarez, he wasn’t looking for a new show. Instead, he was wasting time on Twitter when he noticed someone mention the web series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.”
“I clicked on it because I had nothing else to do,” Simms told TheWrap. “I was like, ‘This guy is really funny.'” That social media rabbit hole led to Simms meeting Alvarez and — ultimately — FX greenlighting its latest buzzy comedy series, “English Teacher.”
Created by and starring Alvarez alongside his longtime comedy partner Stephanie Koenig, “English Teacher” follows the life of Evan Marquez, an openly gay teacher in Austin, Texas. A new FX sitcom brings levity and insight to portrayals of modern education through economical yet diligent craft. English Teacher, created and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, wastes not a moment nor word in its introduction, establishing a foundation for resonance.
Set in a Texas public high school, it presents protagonist Evan Marquez, an idealistic English instructor navigating career passions amid personal and societal trials. Deft character introductions outline fellow teachers and administratives, as well as the student body, with impressionistic vignettes providing dimensionality exceeding brief runtime.
Artfully compressed yet richly detailed, this introductory sequence establishes the series’ mastery of harmonizing topical commentary with soulful portraiture within constraints. It hints at a narrative-balancing weighty exploration of educators’ domains with affirmatory yet realistic humor through vividly drawn personalities.
Moreover, it establishes a tonal balance elevating issues like LGBTQ rights, gun policy, and academic freedom beyond headlines through people navigating everyday realities. Genial yet discerning,...

The English language is a powerful tool. To wit, the phrase “high school” can evoke a myriad of responses depending upon who reads them. For actual young adults, it’s the recognition pressures — social, societal, educational — of their current reality. For the teachers, it’s an understanding they’re helping to shape young minds at a critical stage. For parents, it’s a desire to have some level of control and influence before their kids go off to define themselves. For those in their 30s, it’s a time from long ago that we’re likely not keen to return to or think about in any capacity. In short, it’s a rich text full of contradictions to explore in a television show.

If there’s one complaint to be made about English Teacher, it’s that there simply isn’t enough of it. The show’s first season comprises just eight 20ish-minute installments — which, in fairness, is well in line with the likes of other FX comedies like What We Do in the Shadows or Dave or The Bear (setting aside whether that last one is really a “comedy” at all).
And yet I couldn’t help feeling that in this case, it wasn’t quite enough. Because with such a sharp ensemble, smart perspective and finely honed sense of humor right out the gate, this one feels built to keep going — toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years. This, to be sure, is a great problem for a freshman series to have. If its initial brevity means English Teacher currently demonstrates more potential than it actually has the time to fulfill,...

It’s back to school time, at least where TV is concerned, and we couldn’t be more excited. While the season premiere of ABC‘s Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary is still a month away, FX calls a very different sort of class into session with the wonderfully irreverent English Teacher, starring and created by Brian Jordan Alvarez (M3GAN). The high school classroom is a minefield in this smart, biting comedy, featuring Alvarez (Jack’s dishy husband in the Will & Grace reboot) as Evan Marquez, an embattled teacher in a suburb of Austin, Texas. Evan is openly gay, but “not that proud,” he quips. Tina Rowden/FX Evan’s pride regularly gets bruised: from a meek conflict-averse principal (the hilarious Enrico Colantoni) who has no one’s back; from hypercritical parents — one has him investigated for kissing his then-boyfriend in class — and from easily triggered students. In one of the funniest episodes,...

Hollywood’s content contraction, along with the post-pandemic and strike landscape results in less shows overall. But upcoming streaming, cable and broadcast offerings come with such promise that we had to double our traditional preview to fit a fraction of the noteworthy titles set to premiere in the coming months. FX is probably best known, over the past several years, for being a network with a ton of great dramas. But that changes now, with the addition of “English Teacher.”
