Selena Gomez is comparing her Cannes award-winning turn in “Emilia Pérez” to her subversive casting in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers.”
The star, who recently shared the Best Actress award at Cannes 2024 as part of the ensemble cast of “Emilia Pérez,” told The Hollywood Reporter that both films “have a special place” in her heart.
Gomez had already been a hit teen star with Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” and films such as “Monte Carlo” and “Ramona and Beezus” before Korine cast her as a college student who robs a drive-thru to fund a vacation to Florida. Rachel Korine, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson co-starred as Gomez’s onscreen pals; Gucci Mane and James Franco rounded out the cast of the iconic 2013 film.
“Acting has, and will always be, my heart,” Gomez said. “There’s so much that I want to do and that I haven’t even scratched the surface of,...

Rapper Travis Scott stars in the first trailer for his and director Harmony Korine’s indie film “Aggro Dr1ft,” which was shot entirely in infrared.
The short trailer is bathed in the starkly contrasted colors of the infrared lens, and it follows an assassin on his journey. “Breaking away from the traditional parameters of cinema, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ explores the onslaught of digital ephemera and interrogates modern life through the vernacular of video games. Shot entirely through an infrared lens, the film follows a Miami Beach hitman as he embarks on the relentless pursuit of his next target,” reads the logline.
“As it is, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ is visually thrilling but somewhat tedious to sit through — better as wallpaper than the main attraction,” wrote Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in his review. “Still, as with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ there’s wisdom in the generic quality of his script. Go south, young women. Head to Florida. Maybe try St. Petersburg, a city where students might take a seasonal break from the grind of academia and indulge in some time-honored traditions, like wet bikini dance contests or binge-drinking. Sex and drugs? Motel orgies? Doing bumps on the dance-floor with tongue-wagging bros? That’s called “Tuesday” in Saint Petey’s, yo. Imagine the lawless vibe of international waters, but on dry land. Play your cards right, and you might — as the “good girl” of a quartet of twentysomethings says in a...

Happy Monday to one and all, Jason from Mnpp here with this week's brand new edition of "Beauty vs Beast" -- enfant terrible provocateur Harmoney Korine is tossing another neon grenade our way this forthcoming Friday with his film The Beach Bum (reviewed at SXSW), twisting our sexual stoner preconceptions of Matthew McConaughey to suit his perverse needs. So for this week's contest, with Britney's voice still warbling in our heads, let's toss it back seven years to Korine's last much celebrated ode to the wacky Florida lifestyle, Spring Breakers.
In one corner we've got our four bikini kill co-eds and everywhere else we've got the drug-dealing pistol-fellating Alien (James Franco), owner of shit.

Matthew McConaughey takes on new levels of drug use in the latest trailer for “The Beach Bum.”
True to the film’s title, the trailer opens on a trashy beach town stage where McConaughey’s character Moondog is waiting to accept some sort of musical award.
“Before I accept whatever award it is they’re giving me today, I want to start off with a little poetic foreplay,” he says to a crowd of waiting beachgoers. “One day I will swallow the world, and when I do I hope you all perish violently.”
A neon montage of drug use and drunken antics is next, highlighting Moondog’s poor decision making alongside the film’s high-profile cast. In between clips of coke lines and weed trees, Moondog plays golf with Jonah Hill, kisses Isla Fisher, and wanders the streets at night with Zac Efron. Also rounding out the cast is the hip-hop sensation himself,...

No genre illustrates the evolution of cinema better than the crime film. As recently as the ’90s, Hollywood regularly released stories of cops-and-robber showdowns and mystery-thrillers based on best-selling novels — but as the middle class continues to disappear from Hollywood films, smart crime stories moved to television (see: “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Night Of,” et. al.).
Outside the studios, there is a longstanding tradition – from the B-movies to the Coen brothers – of new directors showcasing their filmmaking chops with dark, stylish, and intense crime sagas. A surge of new filmmakers in the ’90s brought fresh interpretations to the genre, from the pastiche of “Reservoir Dogs” to the unnerving realism in “Boyz n the Hood.”

Spring break forever, indeed. After James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine took us on a vacation like no other in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers a few years back, the adventure will continue. Plans have been announced for a new project based on the 2013 hit, but it will be taking a different format than a big-screen follow-up.
Deadline reports that the original film’s producers Chris Hanley and Fernando Sulichin will be creating a digital series based off the film, but Korine — who is kicking off production this summer on The Beach Bum starring Matthew McConaughey — will not be involved. The series, one of four scripted shows coming to the soon-to-be-launched Blackpills, is currently in its casting stages, which we imagine will feature an all-new ensemble.

Show commissioned by new online platform Blackpills.
A digital series based on Harmony Korine’s cult film Spring Breakers has been announced.
Blackpills, a digital streaming platform that is launching this year, has commissioned the series from the film’s producers Chris Hanley and Fernando Sulichin. Harmony Korine will not be involved.
Hanley’s Muse Productions will produce the series. Blackpills co-founder Patrick Holzman said they plan to release Spring Breakers in “an unconventional digital format”.
Plot details are under wraps, with casting in the works.
Other Blackpills projects that have been announced include Tycoon, a thriller series from Louis Leterrier, and Killer’s School, a mobile-native series written by Luc Besson.
Blackpills was founded by Holzman, previously of Canal+ and AlloCiné, and Deezer co-founder Daniel Marhely.
The original Spring Breakers starred Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine as hedonistic millennials who befriend a drug dealer played by James Franco during spring break.

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Editor’s Note: “Men Go To Battle” is not your normal micro-budget independent film. The story of two Kentucky brothers set against the backdrop of Civil War is a perfect example of how resourceful low budget filmmakers can be, as director Zachary Treitz and his small band of collaborators creates a vibrant and credible-looking period drama. The film is much more than an inventive recreation of period, it is also an exercise in taking a modern approach to story and filmmaking to cut through the layers of historical embellishment to make a direct and intimate film that is as relatable as any set in 2016.
In the first of a series of articles about the film, cinematographer Brett Jutkiewicz talks about how he approached shooting “Men” and how he tackled the challenge of shooting in the low light, pre-electricity world of 1861.

"This war might last longer than me..." Film Movement has debuted a trailer for the indie drama Men Go to Battle, about the story of two brothers during the American Civil War. This is kind of the opposite of Free State of Jones, another Civil War movie due this year, with more of a mumblecore vibe and it even has a darkly comedic side - though that's hard to tell. The cast includes Timothy Morton, Charlotte Arnold, Steve Coulter, Samantha Jacober, Rachel Korine, David Maloney, Emily Cass McDonnell. The film follows two brothers trying to keep their crumbling estate together outside a Kentucky town. Have fun. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Zachary Treitz's Men Go to Battle, from YouTube (via Tfs): Official synopsis: Kentucky, 1861. Francis and Henry Mellon depend on each other to keep their unkempt estate afloat as winter encroaches. After Francis takes a casual fight too far,...

Written by Zachary Treitz and Kate Lyn Sheil, and directed by Treitz, Men Go to Battle is an ambitious independent historical drama that tells the story of two quarreling brothers whose back-and-forth are interrupted by the Civil War. Here’s how the filmmakers synopsize the film, which stars Tim Morton, David Maloney and, from Spring Breakers, Rachel Korine: While most Americans predict that the Civil War will end by Christmas, Henry (Tim Morton) and Francis Mellon (David Maloney) are more concerned about braving another winter on their struggling rural Kentucky farm. If Matthew McConaughey‘s Civil War drama Free State of Jones (or even Civil War) aren’t your cup of tea this summer, we can recommend a more grounded experience from the era with Men Go to Battle. The directorial debut from Zachary Trietz follows two brothers who find themselves facing an approaching war. Premiering back at Tribeca Film Festival last year, it’ll now get a release this summer and the first trailer has landed.
We said in our review, “Mumblecore and the period drama have (somehow) come together, and the result is far better than people who are generally allergic to the subgenre may expect. A poster has been spotted in Cannes (by Collider) for the follow-up to the The Harmony Korine movie starred which starred Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine in roles like you’ve never seen them before!
The only issue here is that the sequel to the movie (known on the poster as Spring Breakers: The Second Coming Written by Irvine Welsh) has not be endorsed by either Korine or Franco and both have lashed our at the Producers basically calling them money-grabbing.
A message from Korine on Facebook stated:
And James Franco gave a longer response on his Instagram likening the decision for a sequel to a sequel to Taxi Driver without Scorsese or De Niro playing any part of it.

On May 8, it was announced that Muse Productions and Wild Bunch, the studios behind Spring Breakers, was producing a semi-sequel, Spring Breakers: The Second Coming. Swedish director Jonas Akerlund is signed on to direct a script written by Irvine Welsh, who wrote the novel on which Trainspotting was based on. On IMDb, the film is listed as a comedy, and EW reports that the film will follow a new group of friends who go up against “militant Christian sects attempting to convert them.”
“It’s not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” said Vincent Maraval, co-chief of Wild Bunch.

Well, okay then! James Franco is clearly not on board for Spring Breakers 2. The This Is The End actor took to his Instagram account on Wednesday, May 14 to tell fans the sequel to the controversial 2013 film "is not being done with Harmony Korine or my consent." He added, "it will be a horrible film." The Harmony Korine-directed movie told the story of four young women, played by Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, and the director's wife Rachel Korine, who have a wild spring break, [...]...

About a week ago, it was reported that Wild Bunch production company is working on a sequel to "Spring Breakers," a 2013 film that starred James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. It was reported that "Spring Breaker 2" will have the characters go to war with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them. And while the cast wasn't announced, the press release stated that some of the original cast members will reprise their roles. Franco has now reacted to the announcement, revealing that he's pissed that the sequel is being made without Harmony Korine, the writer and director of the original. "F*ck that ['Spring Breakers 2'] Bs," wrote the actor. "They're doing it without Harmony'S Consent. Sounds Lame As A Mutha!" The sequel will be directed by Jonas Akerlund (Spun, Horsemen, Beyonce's "Telephone" music video) from a script by Irvine Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting.

One of the strangest films of last year has to be "Spring Breakers," starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine. The movie wasn't big on plot. Instead, it was filled with wacky dialogue and music video-style elements. "Spring Breakers" went on to gross $31.7 million worldwide on a budget of $5 million. Even though it's not considered a massive hit, Wild Bunch production company has now announced that it's developing a sequel. Director/writer Harmony Korine is not returning. He'll be replaced by helmer Jonas Akerlund (Spun, Horsemen, Beyonce's "Telephone" music video), who'll direct from a script by Irvine Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting." The plot has also been revealed. Instead of fighting drug dealers, the characters will go to war with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them. Some of the cast will reprise their roles, but it sounds like the main cast will not return.

Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for Spring Breakers 2 and a Maniac Cop remake.
Of the companies announcing their slates ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, Wild Bunch is the first to announce something of a surprise. For it's announced a rather unexpected sequel: Spring Breakers: The Second Coming.
Harmony Korine, who wrote and directed the first movie, won't be back for the second. Instead, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) will write the script and Jonas Ackerlund will direct. Ackerlund is most famed for his music video work including, er, The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up, but has directed features such as Spun, Small Apartments and the rather good Horsemen.
The film will see the bikini-clad criminals going up against a bunch of extreme militant Christians who attempt to convert them. It certainly sounds interesting.

Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for a sequel to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. The follow-up will form part of the company’s upcoming slate at Cannes.
From the brief synopsis offered up, this time around the Breakers in question will do “battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.” Blimey. Sounds as mad as the first flick. Expect bikini-clad teens wielding an arsenal of weapons.
Tentatively titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, intentions are to generate interest prior to selling the film at the prestigious festival this month. And by the looks of the talent attached, they should have no problem there. Set to direct is Spun and Small Apartments director Jonas Akerlund, confirming star James Franco’s comments that original director Korine had no interest in revisiting the material.

The Spring Breakers are reunited once again! Selena Gomez met up with her Spring Breakers costars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson for a girls' night out this week. The 21-year-old "Come & Get It" singer shared a cute group shot of her and her two pals on Instagram this morning, "Rachel where are you? Reunion with my big sisters for life," Gomez captioned the pic (we're assuming the Rachel shout-out is in reference to their other Spring Breakers costar Rachel Korine). In the photo, the three BFFs sit on a bench while holding each other close. Gomez looks chic in red pants and a loose white top. Meanwhile, Benson rocks a black motorcycle jacket while Hudgens sports all black with...

The film: Four lady-friends are bored with their town. They do what any bored college student would do: Rob a diner and use that money to go down to Florida for their spring break. Once in the state of Florida, the girls get into some trouble and are bailed out by Alien (James Franco), a self-described “gangster with a heart of gold.” Both Alien and the girls share a love of being total weirdos and going on violent power trips, and we see how far some of them will go to have fun.
Why it wasn’t nominated: Spring Breakers is unapologetically explicit.

Nicole Holofcener's "Enough Said" won two for best woman director and woman screenwriter for Holofcener.
Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," on the other hand, did not get love...at all! It won the Hall of Shame and The Movie You Wanted to Love But Just Couldn't awards. Its star, Cameron Diaz took home the Actress Most in Need of a New Agent award. Yikes! But they're true though!

Veteran filmmaker John Waters might be semi-retired from directing. After all, the 67-year-old filmmaker last stepped behind the camera in 2004 for A Dirty Shame. Still, Waters continued to make his shock presence felt throughout the film landscape as an actor (Seed of Chucky), a narrator (In the Land of Merry Misfits) and documentary subject (This Film Is Not Yet Rated). Waters also continued to work as film journalist contributing his Top Ten Film list to Artforum magazine. Waters chose Harmony Korine’s sexy crime drama Spring Breakers, starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine as college girls who turn into thieves over spring break, as his favorite film of 2013.

★★★★☆ After co-writing Larry Clarke's Palme d'Or-nominated cult smash Kids (1995), then directing Gummo two years later, director Harmony Korine has spent the majority of his time of late making short films. However, 2013 saw Korine breeze back into UK cinemas with Spring Breakers (2012); an explosive tale of sun, sea and sex in a Us beach town. Korine takes care to use every tool at his disposal to further communicate his themes, including casting; enlisting former-heartthrob James Franco to play a sleazy gangster and former High School Musical (2006) sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens to portray a drug-taking siren.
Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Hudgens) and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are desperate to go on spring break; an American College tradition involving legions of students descending on beach towns to get drunk, have sex and party hard. Seriously strapped for cash, the girls rob a fast food joint for extra funds. Post robbery, they grab their naive,...

Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine.s most accessible film yet, stars Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine, Ashley Benson, and the super cute Selena Gomez as four college-aged individuals stuck on campus at the beginning of spring break. All they need is a little cash to get out of town, and when they illicitly come across the money, they go on an unforgettable adventure involving bikinis, guns, and a rapper named Alien. Spring Breakers hits Blu-ray and DVD today, and to celebrate Lionsgate Home Entertainment has graciously put together an exclusive Blu-ray bonus clip for fans that takes a look at a few of the outtakes present on the disc. "Spring Breakers"
What's It About? Four small-town college girls (Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine) want to -- no, need to -- go on spring break in Miami. They rob to party, they party and get arrested, and they make bail only to land in the hands of a ghetto-talking local white drug lord (a remarkable James Franco).
Why We're In: Harmony Korine excellently captures college girl culture and youth's craving for chaos in "Spring Breakers" with the right mix of satire, humor, and authenticity. "Spring Breakers" is genius for putting the audience on trial, making you unsure whether to laugh or not as you uncomfortably watch the ludicrousness unravel. If you own this on DVD/Blu-ray you too can have, in the words of James Franco's Alien, "spring break fo-eva."
