Paul Rudd and Jack Black are set to headline a reboot of the Anaconda movie franchise, as they seek to become snake fodder.
It looks like we may be getting another Anaconda film. You could probably have gleamed that from the headline though, to be fair.
While we could make a clever joke about the seemingly endless cycle of reboots, remakes and legacy sequels being somewhat akin to a snake eating its own tail, there’ll certainly be plenty of folks out there that that wish that there had been more Anaconda films, despite the series’ slide into made-for-television ignominy.
The first Anaconda released in 1997 and featured several stars with careers on the rise including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube. And let’s not forget that Jon Voight added his talents to the project as well. It was barmy fun, following ‘a film crew that is taken hostage by an insane hunter,...

Paul Rudd and Jack Black are in early talks to star in a new “Anaconda” movie at Sony, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” writers Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten wrote the screenplay, with Gormican attached to direct. “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Tomb Raider” screenwriter Evan Daugherty wrote the previous draft of the script.
Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing via their Fully Formed banner.
The film isn’t expected to be a sequel or a straight remake, but instead a reimagining of the original ’90s film, which grossed roughly $137 million at the box office worldwide and was disparaged by critics and audiences alike at the time.

"This isn't your territory. It's their territory." Another international remake of a Hollywood classic! China has already remade the 1997 action-horror film about giant snakes called Anaconda, which was a huge hit when it debuted in the 90s. This new version is similar but follows a group of circus performers stranded in a rainforest. They must figure out how to survive when they discover they're marked as bait for the snakes. This Chinese remake stars Terence Yin, Nita Xia, Paul Che, Jiu Kong, Ken Lok, Wang Xing Chen, Wang Gang, Wang Zi Run, Xu Shao Hang, and Wu Hao. The original movie ended up with a few bad direct-to-video sequels (including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda in 2015) and Hollywood has also been trying to reboot it with screenwriter Evan Daugherty hired to write a new script. Until then, this Chinese version might be just as ridiculously entertaining as the original, which infamously...

Here's something you probably didn't expect to see today: A trailer for a Chinese remake of the '90s horror B-movie classic "Anaconda." Yes, really. And, to be perfectly honest, you're probably not prepared for just how bonkers this thing looks. Of course the original movie is pretty bonkers on its own, but this is taking things to another level. Before we discuss this further, it's probably best you watch this insanity for yourself. Check it out above.
So yeah ... much to discuss, much to process. First and foremost, the broad beats of the plot appear to be in line with the original film, with some extra stuff thrown in there. Most notably, there appears to be a lot more giant snake action. The original "Anaconda" had an animatronic snake that was very tough to work with, which limited director Luis Llosa a bit. Here? It's just lots of pretty decent CGI craziness.

Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget”. They’re obviously sticking with the idea of going big with this one, because reliable “inside scoop” provider Daniel Richtman has heard that the lead roles have been offered to Paul Rudd and Pedro Pascal!
We have to take this as a Rumor for right now, since there hasn’t been any sort of official confirmation regarding this news, but it does make sense. Paul Rudd stars in Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its upcoming sequel, so of course they’d want to keep working with him on their event-sized Anaconda movie. And a few months ago, we...

Luis Llosa's "Anaconda" recently made /Film's list of the most savage when-animals-attack horror movies, with Ryan Scott citing its memorable kills as the reason why it's "the ultimate '90s creature feature." The 1997 horror-adventure focuses on a documentary film crew that encounters a snake hunter in the Amazon rainforest, all while tracking a legendary green anaconda of mythic proportions. It features a slew of snakes and the star of the show, an animatronic anaconda designed by special effects supervisor Walt Conti, who previously engineered a full-size animatronic orca Willy of "Free Willy" and the miniature humpback whales of "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." The cast – among them Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, and a baby-faced Owen Wilson – got cozy with lots of non-human co-stars, but local black wooly monkeys made both scouting and shooting a hazard.

In a story likely to evoke a bit of déjà vu, yet another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is reportedly in the works, with SNL Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost set to co-write the script with brother Casey Jost, awaiting a yet-to-be tapped director. However, news on this particular project arrives a mere five years after the franchise’s last live-action iteration released its sequel and presumed swan song, 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, leaving a possibility that the new movie might just be a threequel. Moreover, like its predecessor, the mysterious movie project will be a production of Paramount Pictures and the very same producers, notably the auteur of onscreen explosions himself, Michael Bay. So, are we getting a new iteration of the Turtles or not?

While most underrated B-movies end up getting lost in the annals of history, streaming services like Netflix can really help to reintroduce these forgotten gems to a brand new generation. And the latest low-budget horror flick to benefit from this is Luis Llosa’s so-bad-it’s-good cult classic Anaconda, which has been dominating the platform today, currently sitting in sixth place on the Top 10 most-watched movies list.
For those unfamiliar with the 1997 snake-centric thriller, Anaconda focuses on a documentary film crew as they venture through the Amazon rainforest in search of the Shirishama Indians. Unfortunately, the investigative team – led by The Cell‘s surprisingly great Jennifer Lopez – end up getting way more than they bargained for, as the filmmaking crew crosses paths with a snake hunter busy tracking down a giant green anaconda. One of the most memorable and star-studded creature features of the ’90s, Anaconda is being reimagined at Columbia Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evan Daugherty (writer of Killing Season and co-writer of 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman) has been hired to write a screenplay for an "an all-new and all-modern take" on Anaconda.
While plot details have yet to be unveiled, THR reveals that the studio is "hoping to take a Meg-style approach" to the reimagining. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2018 colossal shark movie brought in more than $530 million worldwide on an estimated $130 million production budget. A producer and director have not been announced for the new Anaconda film at this time.
Released in 1997, Anaconda followed a film crew and a guide with a hidden agenda deep into the Amazon jungle, where they found themselves prey to a massive snake of prehistoric proportions.

Columbia Pictures has ordered a reboot of 1997's Anaconda with Snow White and the Huntman's Evan Daugherty attached to write.
Never doubt the public's appetite for enormous, man-eating snakes...or at least movie studios' perception of the public's appetite for man-eating snakes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures has ordered a reboot of 1997's monster horror hit Anaconda. Evan Daugherty, writer of Tomb Raider and Snow White and the Hunstman, is attached to write the film. No director, producer, or release date has been assigned yet.
Anaconda was critically panned when it was first released in 1997 but soon became a cult classic. The original actually featured a pretty impressive cast including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Erik Stoltz, Danny Trejo, and Owen Wilson. The film followed a documentary crew in South America attempting to shoot a story about a long-lost indigenous tribe along the Amazon.

You read that right! After years of lying dormant, the serpent-fueled horror series is coming back to the big screen. As reported by Bloody Disgusting, Columbia Pictures is looking to revive the Anaconda franchise, which, if we’re being completely honest, hasn’t exactly stood the test of time. The ’90s were filled with plenty of forgettable horror movies, and the original 1997 film is certainly no exception.
Unfortunately, details are rather scarce at the moment, but it looks like Columbia Pictures is bringing Evan Daugherty on board to pen the script. While he’s new to the horror scene, Daugherty has made a name for himself already, having been credited as a screenwriter on Snow White and the Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Divergent, just to name a few. Sony Pictures is in early development of a reboot of the “Anaconda” franchise, hiring “Divergent” writer Evan Daugherty to write the project.
The studio has not set up the project with a producer, director or actors.
Sony released the original “Anaconda” in 1997 as a horror thriller starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz and Owen Wilson. Directed by Luis Llosa, the plot centered on Lopez’ character heading a documentary film crew looking for a long-lost tribe along the Amazon River, only to see the expedition taken over by a nefarious snake hunter, played by Voight, leading to several horrific encounters with a massive green serpent.
“Anaconda” was a success with a worldwide gross of $135 million on a $45 million budget. That led to a 2004 sequel “Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid,” set in Borneo, as the protagonists sought a life-extending flower on a remote island inhabited by deadly snakes.

Myst, the groundbreaking 1993 adventure game, will be the focus of a multimedium franchise blitz, with plans for a movie and TV series.
Myst is probably a name that – if you’re old enough to remember it – you haven’t heard in a Long time. That, however, is about to change in a big way, since Hollywood has set its sights on the long-dormant video game franchise, which, back in the ‘90s was a groundbreaking, immersive adventure into a surreal, sometimes-creepy, world.
Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, a production company that’s had a slice of proverbial picture pies like The Matrix Trilogy, The Lego Movie, the Robert Downey Jr.-fronted Sherlock Holmes films, the Ocean’s heist movies and even the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker solo movie, just acquired the film and television rights to the Myst franchise. Indeed, the company wasted no time announcing ambitious franchise designs...

Hit Broadway musical Oklahoma! is coming to television for the first time after Jack Ryan producer Skydance Television partnered with The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization and music firm Concord. The Blind Side’s John Lee Hancock and This Is Us’ Bekah Brunstetter are writing the present-day adaptation.
The series will be set in America’s heartland and include music by the legendary team of Rodgers & Hammerstein as well new tunes as it is reimagined for a contemporary audience.
It marks the first small screen adaptation of the musical, which was originally written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. The original Broadway production opened in 1943 and ran for over 2,200 performances. It was previously adapted into a feature film starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in 1955.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a time-honoured story that’s gone on to become a fixture of Disney’s prestigious archive – but what of her sister Rose Red?
From what we understand, the House of Mouse has now hatched a live-action “companion piece” designed to tell the famous tale from the perspective of Rose, with screenwriters Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty – creative mind behind Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman – developing a revisionist take on the classic fairytale.
It’s still early, early days for the project, but tonight, we’re hearing that the studio has their eye on Captain Marvel star Brie Larson for the titular role. Though this scoop doesn’t come to us from Disney itself, it does make sense, given Larson’s connection to the House of Mouse via her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Another videogame adaptation in which empty avatars run around perfunctorily because that’s what the plot requires of them. There’s no humor, no fizz, no movie magic at all. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
Very Indiana Jones. Much Last Crusade.
Except… they forgot the humor. They forgot the fizz. They forgot the verve. They forgot the fun.
Forget any Indy sparkle. This is a movie about old maps and secret tombs and puzzle boxes and exotic travel, and there isn’t even a hint of J. Peterman about it.
Lara wears our Perfect Tank in morose (£495); Adventurer’s Trousers in grim (£1,975); axe, belt, bandages her own.
This Tomb Raider movie: it has no personality.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Disney intended to expand upon the Snow White mythology, with a “live-action companion piece,” told from the perspective of the character’s sister, Rose Red – as depicted in the original Grimms’ fairy tales – to be written by Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty. Little more has been heard about that project, but that announcement has been somewhat overtaken by the news that an actual Snow White re-telling is now in the works, with Erin Cressida Wilson writing the script.
Disney has been mining the Snow White property for fresh material ever since delivering Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs in 1937. In addition to the high profile feature film projects, Mirror Mirror and Snow White And The Huntsman, Snow White has appeared in TV movies, TV shows, short films, theme parks, and a stage musical. We check out the John Travolta films that have been bypassing cinemas over the past few years...
In the days leading up to writing this article, which will cover a recent period in which he’s made a bunch of films that have quickly drifted to DVD or VOD, I had to stop and ask myself a genuine question: how do I actually feel about John Travolta?
The answer that rose from the depths of my coal-black, hell-bound soul was weirdly surprising. Brushing aside his personal life – which is not worth getting into here – I found I had nothing but good feelings surrounding his work as an actor.
I grew up with Carrie, Grease, Look Who’s Talking and perhaps his best film, Brian De Palma’s Blow Out. I also grew up with some of his clunkers, like the Look Who’s Talking sequels and 80s concept comedy The Experts. He’s been acting since before I was born, so he’s always been in the background of my pop culture landscape – working solidly for more than 40 years.
Over those decades, his catalogue has defied explanation. He seems to unapologetically pick whatever he feels moved to be a part of regardless of criticism and, goddamn it, there’s something inherently admirable about that. Unlike, say, Bruce Willis, he doesn’t seem happy with doing just a couple of days work on a shoot in a smaller part; more often he will choose to be the star, or at least have equal-ish screen time – even if the project isn’t boasting a huge budget or a big name director. When Pulp Fiction thrust him back into the mainstream, he was still picking up stuff like Phenomenon and Michael in the following years.
I can confidently say that I’ve never seen the man actively 'phone in' a performance and even when he’s overcooked it, there’s usually a decent reason. I mean, if you find yourself on the set of Face/Off going up against The Cage, you’re gonna need to fight fire with fire. Even in Battlefield Earth, he was at least trying.
But in the last half decade we’ve found ourselves in a deeper Travolta trough than we’ve ever been in before. His films aren’t quite cutting the mustard in the industry like they used to and, after a run of flops that have seen him drift back into television with an impressive turn as Robert Shapiro in The People V. O.J. Simpson, I find myself wondering 'will Travolta ever be big business again?'
So, I took a look at four of the films that Travolta’s worked on in the last few years - each of which has effectively gone straight to DVD (save for a few days in a cinema) - to see if anything’s slipped under our radar that needs a boost…
The Forger (2014)
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 7% IMDb Rating – 5.7/10
In The Forger, John Travolta is a man serving a prison sentence who makes a call to get out of it early so he can spend more time with his dying son. In exchange for help with bribing the judge to release him early, John’s expected to help forge a Monet for his erstwhile crime boss, played by Hell On Wheels’ Anson Mount.
As the film casually flits between the forge/heist story and the bonding relationship between John and his son, it’s a testament to director Philip Martin - who comes from a TV background where he’s learnt his trade by helping to bring Prime Suspect and Wallander crime stories to life – that it isn’t a complete disaster. In someone else’s hands, it very well could have been.
Instead, The Forger has a delicate touch and a lot of the shots are interesting and unexpected without being jarring. It flows very smoothly and there’s an undercurrent of genuine love stemming from Travolta’s performance. After losing his own son, making a film about losing a son might have been cathartic and definitely quite close to the bone. I don’t want to read too much into Travolta’s choices, because that way madness lies, but it does really come across as though he cared about this one.
The Forger’s family scenes - with Travolta’s son Tye Sheridan and father Christopher Plummer - play really well, and while the tone of these scenes doesn’t gel with the heist elements of the plot, there’s good stuff here.
Overall, there’s not quite enough substance to sail the whole thing smoothly down the river, but it’s not bad by any stretch and the reviews have been a little harsh on what is actually a perfectly average film. No, you won’t watch it again, but neither will you probably regret watching it in the first place.
Criminal Activities (2015)
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 47% IMDb Rating – 5.8/10
Hoo boy, that title. That’s the worst title. I can’t imagine anyone involved could have wanted it. It’s maybe the most generic title I’ve ever seen. It’s so bad that even when I picked up the DVD, looked at the cover and saw that Michael Pitt (Hannibal, Boardwalk Empire) and Dan Stevens (The Guest, The Guest, The Guest) were Travolta’s co-stars in this, I still felt like I was drowning in the beigeness of it.
The film itself - Jackie Earle Haley's directorial debut - is an unfortunate mess. The plot, such as it is, involves Michael, Dan and the rest of the lads from their childhood gang borrowing money from a mob boss (Travolta) to invest in some sure-fire stocks that immediately collapse, leaving them out of pocket and in John’s. To pay off the debt, he wants them to kidnap a guy, because that guy’s friend kidnapped someone else. It’s convoluted and makes little sense, due to the fact that there’s a big twist coming at the end which will clarify most, if not all of it.
The actors are doing wayyy too much in the film - directed by an actor who clearly wants the actors to have room to act - and therein lies the fundamental problem. Apart from a great turn by Edi Gathegi (Gone Baby Gone, X-Men: First Class, Crank) it’s impossible to point a finger at anyone else in the cast and say 'yep, you, good job' because there’s just too much going on.
The twist is actually decent, but everything leading up to it is a headache. Working on a low budget, most of the scenes are dialogue-heavy, arduous and reliant on excessive coverage – so what you end up with is a film where a load of dudes sit in a room together and shout and swear at each other a lot. I wanted to take that final twist aside, buy it a drink, hug it, and reassure it that it deserved better.
I’m afraid to say there’s not much here to recommend, which is ironic given that it’s had the most positive reviews of the bunch.
I Am Wrath (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 13% IMDb Rating – 5.2/10
I Am Wrath is the worst film of these four by a long chalk.
Here, John stars as a man who decides payback is needed when his wife (Rebecca de Mornay) is killed before his eyes. That’s really all there is, plot-wise. See, it turns out he’s a man with a very particular set of skills and yada yada yada off he goes.
The script - written by Paul 'nope, nothing you’ve heard of' Sloan - is so very, very bad. I am going to tell you how bad it is, so you don’t think I’m just whistlin’ Dixie here:
During his wife’s funeral, John tells the priest that he’s an atheist after the priest gives him a bible in his time of need. Later, Travolta flings this bible across the room angrily. He then stops, pulls a full Joey Tribbiani 'smell-the-fart', slowly approaches the discarded bible, picks it up and reads a line about wrath with the dumbest revelatory expression on his face as the music builds. He sees this as a sign that he should become wrath, despite his earlier insistence that he thinks religion is total garbage.
Later, when asked who he is, Travolta looks determinedly into a mirror and says “I am wrath” – he said the name of the movie you guys! Holy shit. Honestly, I could not believe how hackneyed the whole thing was, not to mention bizarre - the film regularly abandons its serious 'violence begets violence' tone whenever John’s Bff Christopher Meloni turns up, suddenly becoming a jokey buddy comedy.
This was hard to get through. Please avoid it at all costs, for there is nothing here to keep you warm at night.
Killing Season (2013)
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 11% IMDb Rating – 5.4/10
De Niro and Travolta – together at last?
Well, the opening sequence gives us a bit of background on the reason we’re all here. Something bad happened during the Bosnian War that will bring our two main dudes together for some serious vengeance. The sequence is sepia, because past, and ohhhhh god, here comes the present…
It’s at this point that we discover that John is going to attempt an Eastern European accent. It is Not Good. It is not John Malkovich in Rounders, but it is Not Good and we are stuck with it for the duration.
His facial hair during this first scene is also completely ridiculous. I can’t adequately describe how bonkers it is, but try to imagine a werewolf that can only grow stubble carefully shaving a circle into its face. It’s a relief to find that they decided to tone this down for the rest of the film - he looks more like he’s wearing a black chinstrap from then on.
Despite the accent and the questionable chin beard, it’s a lot easier to buy Travolta as a man on a mission of vengeance during Killing Season than it was during I Am Wrath. He’s obviously jazzed to be working with De Niro and he’s knuckled down to bounce off him, keeping it low-key and making an effort not to overdo it.
As a result of this equilibrium, we also get a glimpse of a pre-Meet The Parents De Niro - which is very much welcomed, sweet lord - and the two men head into the second act ready to take each other on, hunt each other down and resolve those Bosnian sins of the past in the most violent way possible.
The script - by proposed Tomb Raider reboot scribe Evan Daugherty - occasionally stumbles, but is solid enough. The direction is fine. It’s fine. It’s probably Mark Steven Johnson’s best film (but when his other major films are Daredevil and Ghost Rider, that’s not exactly a gush) and as the two leads hunt and trap each other, a lot of Predator love oozes out of the frame. Unfortunately, this is not Predator, but you could do worse on an evening than to sit through this instead (if you don’t own Predator).
…Oh my god you guys. We should totally watch Predator right now.
Until next time, and until the next rebirth of Mr Travolta, I bid you adieu.

Suicide Squad: Reportedly, new footage for Suicide Squad is being shot right now with the goal of altering the tone of the movie to bring in "more of the lightness to which audiences responded" in an early trailer. The idea is to beef up "fun character moments and interactions." Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis star; the movie will open in theaters on August 5. Fairytale revisions are still all the rage in Hollywood. Yet another live-action take on Snow White's classic tale has just been picked up by Disney, according to THR. The script — written by Justin Merz — was originally focused on Rose Red, another protagonist from Grimm's Fairytale with no relation to Snow White. Until writer Evan Daugherty got an idea. I know, I know. You're rolling your eyes at the thought. But Daugherty has already tweaked the Snow White story before with Snow White and the Huntsman (which I really liked) and the upcoming The Huntsman: Winter's War (which I'm dying to see). He was also one of the writers on Divergent (another fave) and he's prepping the new Tomb Raider. All of that tells me that he's committed to giving ladies some kickass stories and this new Rose Red adaptation sounds like that's exactly what we're looking at. This time around,...

Justin Merz wrote a screenplay that was then reworked by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) into an idea that mixes the two fairy tales, bringing Rose Red into the more familiar story to try and save her sister after Snow White...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is developing a new film based on the character Snow White's estranged sister, Rose Red. The screenplay was written by Justin Merz which included a pitch from Evan Daugherty. Daugherty's credits include Universal Pictures' "Snow White And The Huntsman", Paramount Pictures' "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", and Summit Entertainment's "Divergent."
This take on the Snow White classic is said to be:
"A revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story. When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarves to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life."
Tripp Vinson is producing via his Vinson Films banner.

Disney is adding a live action Snow White tale to its roster - albeit with a bit of a twist...
The week before Snow White And The Huntsman follow-up The Huntsman lands in cinemas from Universal, and we’ve got the news that Disney is going back into the Snow White business.
It’s got a film in the stove called Rose Red, the idea for which originally came from Evan Daugherty, who penned the two Huntsman movies. Justin Merz has taken over scripting duties, and the film will focus on the Grimm fairy tale character of Rose Red. The twist, though, is she’s now Snow White’s estranged sister.
Thus, the Snow White story is set to be retold, with Rose Red coming into the tale as the person who tries to break Snow White’s curse when she eats the poison apple.

Fans of Snow White are not going to pleased. Following on from The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s decision to do away with Kristen Stewart’s Snow White entirely in favor that film's supporting players, we’ve now learned that Disney’s own live-action adaptation will instead primarily revolve around Snow White’s sister, Rose Red, instead of the traditional heroine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has decided to pick up this project after being hugely impressed by a pitch by Evan Daugherty based on Justin Merz’s script. Usually overshadowed by her more famous sister, the character of Rose Red actually appeared in a number of The Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. None of these were related to Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, which Disney iconically brought to life back in 1937. However, while Justin Merz originally wrote a ...

With Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" essentially taking out Disney's chance at a gritty, live-action revisionist take on their classic animated "Snow White" film, the studio has decided to adopt a different approach.
The studio has picked up both a script by Justin Merz and a pitch by 'Huntsman' script writer Evan Daugherty which reworks the tale. The story? A revisionist take which focuses on Rose Red, a sister to Snow White.
Though Rose Red is a character that appeared in Grimms fairy tales, it is in an adventure that had no relation to the more well known "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves". Merz's penned 'Red' as a stand-alone feature, but then Daugherty came up with a new take which makes the story closer and more of a "companion piece" to the animated "Snow White".

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a time-honoured story that’s gone on to become a fixture of Disney’s prestigious archive – but what of her sister Rose Red?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the House of Mouse has hatched a live-action “companion piece” designed to tell the famous tale from the perspective of Rose, with screenwriter Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty – creative mind behind Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman – developing a revisionist take on the classic fairytale.
First appearing in Grimms’ legendary stories, Rose Red was a character originally introduced in a plot unrelated to the inimitable Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, where the two sisters sided with a friendly bear to bring an evil, out-of-control dwarf down to size.
This time round, Merz and Daugherty will be splicing the two stories together, implementing Rose into the classic Snow White tale we know and love...

Though reception was mixed on Snow White and the Huntsman, Universal Pictures decided to move ahead with a prequel/sequel. However, Kristen Stewart is not returning as Snow White and the film will focus more heavily on Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman and Charlize Theron's Evil Queen. Joining them are Emily Blunt, who plays the Ice Queen, the Evil Queen's sister and Jessica Chastain, who plays Sara, the Huntsman's warrior lover. So does no Kristen Stewart and a new creative team equal a better film? Universal is certainly hoping that's the case, they've certainly upped the star-power for the prequel/sequel. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan replace Rupert Sanders as director. Writing credits go to Craig Mazin, Frank Darabont and Evan Spiliotopoulos who replace Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini. The film will arrive in Us theaters on April 22, 2016. The film will most likely face the most competition at the box...

The last time we heard about G.I. Joe 3, Paramount had moved on to writer Aaron Berg after giving Evan Daugherty and Jonathan Lemkin a shot. That was pretty much it, and while there were rumors about a possible Transformers/Joe crossover, it looks like they have other plans. Hollywood Reporter is stating that Paramount and Hasbro's film label, Allspark Pictures, are aiming to create a shared universe... Read More...

Everything old is new again. If a franchise was popular a decade (or more) ago, you can bet a Hollywood executive is working to resurrect it. Many of these reboots and requels and alternate timelines may seem superfluous to fans. But when it comes to the “Tomb Raider” series, taking another pass at Lara Croft’s story isn’t inherently a bad idea. Since the inception of the series in 1996, Lara Croft has become a cultural icon. Her legacy has spanned nearly a dozen games and two films. Not all of that legacy has been positive. As gaming graphics advanced, so too did Lara’s sexualization and while she began life as a action-adventure female scientist, debate raged over whether the Tomb Raider could be considered a positive feminist role model. Yet her popularity reached its zenith in 2001 when Angelina Jolie donned Lara’s iconic booty shorts for “Lara Croft...

A reboot of Tomb Raider has been in the works for a long time, and now THR reports that MGM and Warner Bros. have finally found someone to direct it. Roar Uthaug, who directed the Norwegian disaster film The Wave, has been hired to bring the story of Lara Croft to the big screen.
This film won't be a continuation of the two previous Angelina Jolie-starring films, and will instead take a page from the recent video game reboot and go back to explore the origins of Lara Croft. Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon, and the writing team of Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have worked on earlier versions of the script, but Transformers 5 co-writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet is now in discussions to write the screenplay. It's unclear whether she'll start from scratch or work from those earlier drafts.

Lara Croft has taken one small step toward returning to the big screen today, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that the long-gestating Tomb Raider reboot has found a director in Roar Uthaug (The Wave).
Setting up shop at Warner Bros. in partnership with MGM, today’s confirmation arrives in tandem with the news that Transformers 5 co-writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet has entered negotiations to pen the screenplay for the video game adaptation. Before coming aboard, the script has seen drafts by a collection of writers including Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.
Billed as a total reboot of the IP, the studio’s vision for a modern Tomb Raider overhaul will no have affiliations to the Angelina Jolie-fronted duo of films that released in 2001 and 2003. Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug ("The Wave") has been set to direct the reboot of the "Tomb Raider" film franchise at MGM, Gk Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who penned the Black List script "Hibernation" and is a co-writer on "Transformers 5," is in negotiations to write the screenplay. Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby previously worked on the script.
The film will once again feature archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft, one of the best known video game characters and a role portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two previous films over a decade ago.
The new incarnation is also an origin story reboot, not unlike the game franchise itself which was rebooted in 2013 to great acclaim with an 86/100 on Metacritic. That game scored a sequel, "Rise of the Tomb Raider," which came out last week on the Xbox One and equaled its predecessor with an 86/100 as well.
