With help from a (witch?)crafty Catherine Keener, a young female director campaigns to “curse” out a shady producer in the full trailer for Netflix‘s Brand New Cherry Flavor.
Premiering — a bit fittingly — on Friday the 13th (of August), the horror thriller stars Rosa Salazar (Undone, Parenthood) as Lisa Nova, a filmmaker who heads to Hollywood in the early ‘90s to make a movie, only to clearly be let down by her producer (played by Perry Mason‘s Eric Lange). After that, Lisa “tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge — and kittens,” the official synopsis reads.

Over thirty new shorts across three sold-out, big-screen showcases, and an entire weekend of horror and genre-themed fun – this year’s FrightFest was one of the biggest ever for short form content. From comedies to mood-pieces, stop-motion to flat-out slashers, it was a truly diverse bunch, covering a wide spectrum of filmmakers and countries of origin. Here’s the very best of them:
There’s an awful lot to love in Stefan Georgiou’s cockney-gothic chiller The Dead Ones – a clever spin on the ghost-world formula that I won’t spoil here. Packed out with four terrific performances and a tricky, brilliantly moody plot that more than earns its longer 20-minute run time.
Adele Vuko’s edgy Aussie comedy The Hitchhiker might sound a little genre bare-bones, running off its basic title and set-up – three best friends picking up a scary-looking hitcher while on a midnight drive to a music...

Brothers Jon and James Kondelik continue to reveal more from their film, The Divine Tragedies. This film, which is based on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case, has been reset to film. This time the names are slightly different, but the brother's motivations are the same. They want to get away with murder. Now, four new clips have been released for The Divine Tragedies. Each clip shows more of the film and more of their plan, to get away with the perfect crime. The clips are titled: "Alley Scene," "Masterpiece," "Butterflies," and "Where are the Keys." The first clip, "Alley Scene," shows how one of the brothers is more motivated to kill, compared to the other. "Masterpiece" introduces their main victim, Genevieve (Hannah Levien). Meanwhile, "Butterflies" shows Charles (Graham Denman) and his sadistic ways. Unfortunately for Charles, his first murder does not go according to plan. The "Where are...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by producer and actor Jon Kondelik. Kondelik and this critic have worked together, in the past. Director/writer: Jose Prendes. Cast: Graham Denman, Hannah Levien, Barbara Crampton, Sean Whalen, Ken Foree and Lynn Lowry. The Divine Tragedies is an unreleased film from production house Dual Visions. Developed by Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House), The Divine Tragedies is a tale of two murderous brothers. On separate paths, the two brothers come to blows, on their murderous tactics and ideologies. The film also introduces a host of horror stars, but most are underused. Instead, this indie feature focuses on one brother's destruction and descent into madness. Meanwhile, the green and red lighting added in a nightmarish quality, while the story developed in a dream-like fashion, overall. The Divine Tragedies offers a compelling story and indie film fans will enjoy the film's central conflict.

Producer Bec Dakin realises that aiming to raise up to $150,000 via crowdfunding for a $3 million comedy adapted from a John Birmingham novel is a very tall order, but that.s not the point.

On a special day of shooting writer-director Jose Prendes’ Divine Tragedies with the fantastic Ken Foree, Dread Central was invited to watch some... well… shooting. In the scene they were about to film, Foree’s character gets shot. Whether he lives or dies, we can’t say...
But here’s what Prendes had to say:
Dread Central: So, tell us how you assembled this amazing cast!
Jose Prendes: Ken Foree and Barbara Crampton were always on our list, but we never thought we could get them, or thought they would be into it, because the roles are very stylized. Especially Barbara's role, which is very unique, and she hasn't really played anything like that before. So for her to call me up and say, 'This is a really disturbing script but it would make such a lovely movie and I want to be a part of it,' really means a lot.

Light on conflict but full of disturbing and awkward scenes, Children of Sorrow is a harrowing tale set in the depths of madness. The story is centered on one man - Simon Leach (Bill Oberst Jr.). This character calls himself the Father, but this is not one man you would want in your family life. The Father recruits several impressionable twentysomethings. Once interviewed and indoctrinated, the followers are slowly brought...

Every horror fan has their own idea of what’s authentically frightening, but for me personally, successful horror goes straight for the kill by getting to the root of what scares us on a primal, inherently human level. It touches nerves and stirs fears that live deep inside all of us. We’re unsettled, disturbed, and maybe even provoked as a result. Children of Sorrow is the type of film that successfully does all this and more by drawing us into the lives of some truly fascinating characters.
The film introduces us to cult leader Simon Leach (Bill Oberst Jr.) and a group of desperate teens he has assembled together in a Mexico desert compound to help him realize his personal vision of faith and spiritual growth. The latest member of the group is Ellen (Hannah Levien), a young woman searching for her sister who...

Enter the world of ‘The Mirror’ with the first exclusive clip from co-writer-director William Dickerson’s upcoming comedy-drama. The clip follows Taylor, a lifestreamer, as he meets Ellen (Hannah Levien) for the first time over coffee. She questions why he always feels the need to film everything he does, and he insists that he doesn’t need much time for himself. Ellen thinks the camera acts as a barrier that prohibits him from getting to know anyone else. She adds that it’s hard to get to know him, since everything she says is being recorded. William Dickerson directs this documentary satire which includes Taylor, Hannah Levien, Pat "Marty" Dowd, Bill Escudier and Raymond Merritt. The Mirror asks Who is Taylor? That is the question filmmaker William Dickerson tries to answer in this metafictional satire about a quirky and charismatic lifestreamer. “Taylor” is an open book who magnetically draws others into his world where public and private are one and the same. But as Dickerson pushes Taylor to delve deeper into his traumatic past, the story takes an unexpectedly dangerous turn.

The After Dark Film Festival is one of this reviewer's favourite annual events. Every year, After Dark Films comes out with an interesting slate of underground horror titles. This year, After Dark has already announced the attachment of the horror films: Asylum, Red Clover, and Dark Circles to their 2013 line-up. Children of Sorrow has also been attached to the film festival as of today. Children of Sorrow, from director Jourdan McClure (Rogue River), involves an isolated cult. Simon Leach (Bill Oberst Jr.) is the leader of the cult and Leach has plans to take advantage of his many followers. Few will escape the confines of his heavily surveilled ranch and few will forget McClure's latest film. Fans of horror can preview the movie poster for the film here. The graphic shows Leach in a Christ like pose, with a brilliant sun in the background. However, Leach is no saviour. Director: Jourdan McClure.

After Dark Originals, which features a combination of originally produced and acquired films, has announced the fourth film in its second series, the Jourdan McClure-directed Children of Sorrow, which brings us a “petrifying look into a cult psyche.”

While only a small handful of them were truly good flicks (Lake Mungo and Frontier(s) are incredible), there’s no denying that After Dark was doing a damned good thing for budding filmmakers and fans as a whole.

There are questions that we ask ourselves, hypothetical ones that can result in lurid, violent fantasies and nightmares. What would you do to protect the ones you love? What if they were taken from you? Killed?
What if it was something worse than that?
Hollywood films are filled with stories that show people's answer to these questions, though they're frequently either glamorized and action-movie'd to death without any real emotion or heart. Australian writer/director/producer Steven Kastrissios has his own answer to the question, and it's an unapologetic, brutal response. His first film, The Horseman, tells the story of Christian (Peter Marshall), a divorced father with an average life, and average job and a generally average existence. He's balding, a little paunchy and mostly unremarkable. Until the day his daughter Jesse (Hannah Levien) is found dead -- with alcohol, cocaine, and heroin in her blood, and semen from four different men inside of her.
