Sam Mendes is bringing back his acclaimed, Tony Award-winning blockbuster production of The Lehman Trilogy for a fourth run in London.
It’s quite a thing to bring the play, considered a modern classic, back into central London when it just played a 16-week season at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, running until May of last year.
“There’s an enormous appetite for the play, even more so because its been on screen in cinemas via Nt Live,” noted Caro Newling who runs the theater division of All3Media-owned Neal Street Productions, founded by Newling, Mendes, and Pippa Harris.
The new production, produced by the National Theatre and Neal Street, will return to that same Gillian Lynne stage for a limited 14-week slot from September 24 through January 5, 2025. It will be featuring the incredible rotating glass-box scenic design created by Es Devlin, dynamic videos designed by Luke Halls, and stunning lighting design by Jon Clark.

Exclusive: Sam Mendes has picked Johnny Flynn, Tuppence Middleton and Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss to portray legendary stars Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue, a mouth-watering new play by Jack Thorne that explores how acting giants Burton and Gielgud staged Hamlet on Broadway in 1964.
Burton, newly wed to Taylor after their affair on the set of epic film Cleopatra, signed on to play the Danish prince in a fabled production directed by Gielgud in New York.
On opening night in April, 1964, scores of police hemmed in crowds who were as eager to catch a glimpse of Taylor entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as they were to see her husband as the depressed Dane.

Exclusive: Sam Mendes, the Oscar and Tony award-winning director, has chosen three London theater stars — Michael Balogun (National Theatre Live: Death of England-Delroy), Hadley Fraser (Donmar Theatre’s Coriolanus), and Nigel Lindsay (Chichester Festival Theatre’s Woman In Mind) — to bring his much-garlanded production of The Lehman Trilogy back into the West End. That’s following triumphant runs at the UK’s National Theatre, the Park Avenue Armory and Broadway, and a phenomenal 16-week, sold-out run at London’s Piccadilly Theatre in 2019.
The actors will portray the Bavarian-born Lehman brothers, Emanuel, Mayer, and Henry, who settled in Alabama as cotton merchants, a springboard to what was to become what Balogun termed “a giant machine” on Wall Street. Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, and Ben Miles originally performed the multiple roles of the Lehman brothers and their descendants — male and female, old and young — in London and New York.

Hadley Fraser some while ago established himself as one of the most protean actors around a talent equally at home both in big-name musicals Les Mis, Young Frankenstein and Shakespeare playing Aufidius to Tom Hiddlestons Coriolanus and Polixenes in The Winters Tale, alongside Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench. Now, with theatre in the capital kickstarting anew, Fraser is due to open Aug 11 at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2 22 A Ghost Story, which is that modern-day rarity a stage thriller.

"8 Tales of Horror." Ammo Content + Hewes Pictures have debuted the first official trailer for a new horror anthology feature titled Murder Manual, available to watch sometime on VOD this summer. Frightening, interlocking chapters depicting horrific and psychologically altering tales of death. Yet another fun horror anthology project, but with a bit of a twist. "While Murder Manual is an anthology film, the trailer reveals that all the stories are intertwined in sinister ways. They are all brought together to form the titular purpose, a murder manual, with horrifying events to accompany its creation." The film's main cast features Emilia Clarke, Melanie Cruz, Bryan Manley Davis, Hadley Fraser, Anthony Goss, Van Hansis, Sally Hughes, and Sophie Knapp. From this first look footage, there doesn't seem to be much in here that is interesting or unique, perhaps there's more substance hidden inside the manual. Only one way to find out... Here's the...

While working on studio projects, Kenneth Branagh had also been pursuing a more ‘indie’ project with All Is True, returning to his longtime interest in Shakespeare. Starring Branagh along with Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, the filmmaker/actor called up his pals at Sony Classics about taking on the title, which it opens stateside this weekend. Following doc hits Apollo 11 and Amazing Grace, Neon is going for three with the Friday release of documentary The Biggest Little Farm, which debuted in Telluride last fall. IFC Films is opening crime biodrama Charlie Says by director Mary Harron and starring Matt Smith and Hannah Murray in the top 25 markets this weekend ahead of its on-demand availability beginning May 17, while Cohen Media Group is out with French-language drama My Son starring Guillaume Canet in New York and L.A.

Sir Kenneth Branagh has spent a major part of his career interpreting the works of William Shakespeare. His 1989 breakthrough in film featured Branagh as the star and director of Henry V (he won Oscar nominations for both jobs). So it only seems fair that Branagh should be the one to play the Bard in All Is True, directing a mesmerizing meditation on the last days of the greatest writer in the English language.

How do we honor an icon when so little truth is known about his life? If Kenneth Branagh’s earnest Shakespearean biopic is any guide, we would do best to stick with the Bard’s own works. Indeed, it’s hard to watch “All Is True” without noticing what’s missing most: the nimble wit and profound insight we’ve already seen in Branagh’s own Shakespearean adaptations.
One can certainly empathize with the director’s desire to dig more deeply, after 35 years of committing the Bard of Avon’s work to stage and screen so successfully. But in the end, this fictionalized biography primarily reminds us how rare its subject’s talents really were.
As depicted by screenwriter Ben Elton, Shakespeare (Branagh) comes home to Stratford in 1613, hoping for a quiet retirement. He has been devastated by a recent fire, which burned his beloved Globe Theatre to the ground.

The disappearance of Frances Porter (Lydea Perkins) seems at first to be a run-of-the-mill missing persons case; as Morse reassures her concerned husband, Noel (Edwin Thomas) and sister, Jilly (Rosalie Craig), most such incidents are resolved quickly. Mrs Porter proves elusive, however, and Morse’s visit to the rather fabulous boutique she works at – Alice’s Marmalade Cat, which is the sort of thing Granny might have seen on her famous trip – turns up no clues apart from the identity of the vanished woman’s lover, a man named Don. Fellow sales assistant Anouska (Celeste Dodwell) also reveals that Frances borrowed some clothes from the shop to dress up for an assignation with the mystery man, a clue that will prove vital to solving this increasingly odd case.

Always wanted to see it, reveled in the soundtrack, but never got my chance. Now you too can journey to the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House to delight in the music of the night. Andrew Lloyd Webber is celebrating 25 years of Phantom and has pulled out all the stops for this staged version of the Broadway favorite. In 1905, the Paris Opera House is auctioning off old props and most are being bought by the aged Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny, (Hadley Fraser). Lot 665 is a mechanical monkey music box that was found in the catacombs beneath the opera and it stirs memories in Raoul, but Lot 666 is the repaired chandelier featured in the...

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most loved and memorable musicals of the theatre. In October 2011, the 1986 musical celebrated its 25th anniversary by staging a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The anniversary production was filmed so that this once-in-a-lifetime performance could join the rising number of theatre performances coming home to Blu-ray. While the complex set changes and some of the more dramatic theatre effects are marginalized due to the location and filming concerns, the overall production stays in tact. It’s a mesmerizing display of theatre talent, complete with a reunion performance. There are a handful of moments, however, that will make die-hard theatre fans wince – as I did when I saw them use Led screens. I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance what it was, a chance to see Phantom performed once again at a fraction of the cost of seeing it on Broadway.

It’s taken me a few hundred hours to absorb the recent news that Taylor Swift has been cast as the street-wise Eponine in the movie musical version of Les Miserables. Hugh Jackman? Obviously. Russell Crowe? With the right sideburns, Javert-y well. Anne Hathaway? If they must. But Taylor Swift is the revolutionary straw that breaks the runaway cart for me. Chapter 1: Proving My Love For Les Mis As a lover of musical theater but I swear not in an annoying you’ll want to murder me way (my nightly in the mirror mantra), Les Miserables is by far the best musical ever. It’s not even up for debate. The story, the characters, the music, the deaths… oh the deaths. (Evvvery muhhf*cka dies in Les Mis.) It’s a show that transcends the stage and works its way into your life, kind of like The Bible. My...
