We’ve all seen countless conventional social realism representations of those sidelined by society with their gritty, miserable aesthetics, populated by problematic characters, and whilst they are undeniably powerful, director Michael Jobling wanted to explore a different way of portraying such narratives in his pilgrimage or purgatory drama short The Walk. Written by Sophie Ellerby, who came across an article about a vital local bus route being abruptly cut, and collaborated with Jobling to dive into the psyche of an individual battling the logistical obstructions of a 24-mile round trip in order to sign on, coupled with the heavy psychological weight of grief and isolation. Featuring a singular performance from BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar, The Walk – which we highlighted as one of the stand out shorts of London Film Festival 2023 – is rife with melancholy and hard hitting truths but also proffers glimmers of hope and a sensory appreciation of the grounding beauty of nature.

Over the course of the series, the third and concluding season of which is now streaming on Netflix, a crumbling society searches for answers, including to one very big question: Which came first, the hybrids or the virus? In the penultimate episode of Season 3, that long-standing question is definitively answered — and its consequences shape the show’s explosive finale.

One of Netflix’s secret keys to success has been letting shows embrace their darkest elements. The overly managed shows that feel studio-noted to death always seem to fall flat. Yet Sweet Tooth has never really faced that problem. Very few shows can get away with the tone this comic-book adaptation cultivated in Season 1 or Season 2. Placing its story in the apocalypse and having an adult man protect a younger protagonist with special capabilities has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Last of Us. However, there’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.

Over 50 years of British sci-fi television, the genre went from one golden age to another. The 1970s gave us bleakly devastating visions of the future, the 1980s gave us space invasions and comedy, the 1990s blended crime drama with sci-fi, and the 2000s remade shows from the 1970s and gave us Christopher Eccleston as two kinds of god.
Then came the 2010s, the birth of transatlantic co-productions and streaming. British sci-fi television was no longer the cheaper, shoddier counterpart to its US equivalent. The production values were glossy, the cast reached A-list heights, and the writing was what you’d expect from the most recent golden age of television. The age of cheap and cheerful sitcom-adjacent British science fiction was over… almost.

The actor, 43, talks about irreverence, trying to look more awake, his love of music, and the pursuit of art
I have mixed feelings about being the first non-white actor to win a Bafta. I was very grateful, but it also raised questions. I remember watching The Buddha of Suburbia and Bhaji on the Beach as a kid. British-Asian culture didn’t start in 2017, when I won. It’s weird to think it wasn’t recognised until that point.
Working on Four Lions with Chris Morris was a great lesson in irreverence. Even if people insist you take things seriously, you don’t have to. Actually, it’s probably more important not to. Comedy can take the teeth out of even the most serious issues.
I only started acting because my mum wanted me to pronounce my “T”s properly. When I was seven, she took me to speech and drama lessons.

A feast for the eyeballs! There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains detailed descriptions of plots and key scenes in the Netflix thriller series “Fool Me Once.”
Joanna Lumley hadn’t read Harlan Coben’s bestselling novel “Fool Me Once” before shooting its Netflix series adaptation. This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Fool Me Once."
Every Harlan Coben novel ends with a trademark twist. The shocking nature of these revelations usually re-contextualizes our understanding of established character motivations and leads to breakthroughs in unsolvable cases. Coben's "Fool Me Once," adapted by Netflix into an eight-episode series, employs a similar trope by introducing a twist that questions our allegiance to the central protagonist. The problem, however, is that these subversions are not backed by narrative logic and quickly fall apart once probed on a superficial level.
"Fool Me Once" is a murder mystery/thriller that opens with the death of Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage), who seems to have been shot during a street robbery gone wrong. His wife, ex-military pilot Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), is grieving both the death of her husband and her sister, Claire (Natalie Anderson), who died over the span of a few months.

A newly single mom is grieving her husband when, just two weeks after his funeral, she sees him appearing alive and well — on her nanny cam. Was he actually murdered? Brocklehurst also worked with Coben on the series Safe, The Stranger, and Stay Close, which were also based on Coben’s novels. In the 25-years-later epilogue of Netflix thriller Fool Me Once, police detective Sami Kierce brings flowers to a new mother in hospital. She’s Lily, the grown-up daughter of Captain Maya Stern, and has just given birth to her first child – a baby girl she names Maya in memory of her dead mother. Kierce was the officer who investigated the murder of Lily’s father Joe, and his and Maya’s lives became entwined in the days leading up to her death all those years ago.
In the TV show, it feels natural for Sami, played by Adeel Akhtar, to be at the hospital. His history with Maya and how they worked together to bring down the Burkett family make it realistic for him to have stuck around in Lily’s life. If, however, his book character counterpart Det. Roger...

Fool Me Once kicks 2024 off with a bang as it hits the charts around the globe, but as you may have figured out by now, the show won’t be returning for a second season.
In case you missed it, Fool Me Once is a new British drama series that features the talents of Michelle Keegan, Adeel Akhtar, and Richard Armitage. It’s about an ex-soldier who finds out that her husband, who is supposed to be dead, is very much alive as she spots him on a nanny cam.
As with all prior Harlan Coben shows on Netflix and a growing number of Netflix scripted dramas – Fool Me Once was designed and will remain a limited series. That means by the time the credits roll on episode eight, you’re all done. That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that the series...

Over the past few days, Netflix has added some truly classic movies from the 1970s – we’ll have more on those in a separate article, but we’ll list the titles below.
For more on what’s to come throughout the rest of the month – check out our January 2024 preview, which we just updated today with a bunch more titles on the way, including After Everything: The Final Chapter.
One final note before we dig in. You may be expecting to see Black Sails on this list, but sadly, Netflix has seemingly pushed back the release date. More on this when we get it.

Warning: contains major finale spoilers for Netflix’s Fool Me Once finale.
Adeel Akhtar walked away with that one, didn’t he? As traumatised detective Sami Kierce, Akhtar pulled a what’s known in technical speak as an absolute bloody blinder, lending pathos and depth to a character who, in other hands, could easily have been just another cookie cutter crime mystery cliché.
Fool Me Once is another solid entry in the Harlan Coben Netflix canon, striking that perfect hangover-tv tone of keeping the pace moving at a lick and dishing out revelations and twists at exactly the right interval, without giving you too much trouble under the surface. It was big, heightened, at times extremely unlikely, but always watchable, and concluded its minor class war theme with a victory (if a Pyrrhic one for Maya) against the one percenters, which is just what audiences want to see.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!
