Stars: Louisa Krause, Sophie Lowe | Written and Directed by Maximilian Erlenwein
Written and directed by Maximilian Erlenwein, The Dive is an English language remake of the 2020 Swedish thriller Breaking Surface, which is basically the same story, only colder, due to it being set in northern Norway. As such, it’s an effective and engaging survival horror, not too far removed from 2022’s horror hit The Fall, which had two women stuck up a pole, as opposed to two women stuck underwater. You could also, somewhat less generously, see it as 47 Metres Down without the sharks.
Louisa Krause and Sophie Lowe play May and Drew, two sisters of a similar age, who have become semi-estranged as a result of a recent event – we assume the death of their father, though that’s never explicitly stated. Whatever the incident, May is still harbouring some resentment towards Drew (flashbacks belatedly hint at the...

There’s no time like the present in this diving thriller, neither for its two sister protagonists May (Louisa Krause) and Drew (Sophie Lowe), nor the director Maximilian Erlenwein who wastes no time in getting the two of them in the water. The pair have an evident competence and confidence as they prepare to take the dive in from a tiny jetty on an isolated and idyllic looking beach, although May seems less keen on this yearly reunion swim than Drew is.
The pair are wearing full face masks that allow them to communicate even when submerged, also permitting Erlenwein to key us more directly into their thoughts, and soon, fears. They’re not under for long before disaster strikes as a sudden rockfall catches them off guard. Worse still, it is the practical, no-nonsense May who gets trapped. With the clock ticking on her sister’s air it’s up to the more.

One briny-deep thriller that does not have sharks, other aquatic predators or even human ones, German director Max Erlenwein’s English-language “The Dive” manages to work up considerable tension nonetheless. It’s closer in gist to “127 Hours” than most other underwater suspense films, hinging on a similar type of physical entrapment — only the survivable timespan here is of course much reduced, because the imperiled characters have a limited oxygen supply.
While perhaps not quite striking enough in style or incident to leave a lasting impression, this very well-crafted remake of co-writer Joachim Heden’s 2020 Norwegian feature “Breaking Surface” should particularly impress with its underwater photography on the big screen. Most viewers, however, are likely to catch it via home formats, as Rlje Films releases the film day-and-date to digital and theater screens on Aug. 25.

Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause as Drew and May in The Dive. Maximilian Erlenwein: 'It was crucial for me to make it as real and realistic as possible' Maximilian Erlenwein's The Dive takes the plunge with two sisters, Drew (Sophie Lowe) and May (Louisa Krause), as they head off on their annual diving trip together. The isolated location proves to be a threat, however, when May becomes trapped beneath the waves and Drew faces a race against the clock to try to save her. Shot on location in Malta and the neighbouring island of Gozo, Erlenwein was determined to keep the underwater shooting as authentic as possible, which meant both actresses had to learn how to dive. We caught up with him ahead of the film's FrightFest screening and UK release to talk about the challenges.
Do you dive yourself?
Maximilian Erlenwein: Oh, yes. I did a lot of diving when I was younger.

An race against the clock offers plenty of adrenaline-filled moments, but a weak backstory drains the tension
This survival thriller puts an underwater twist on 127 Hours, the Danny Boyle movie in which James Franco’s arm gets wedged in a boulder while he’s out hiking. Here, the limb-stuck-in-rock predicament is 30-odd meters below sea level, with an American diver who traps her leg off the coast of Malta. (Plot spoiler: no DIY surgery is involved.) What follows is a race against the clock, cleverly constructed by director Maximilian Erlenwein and co-writer Joachim Hedén. Their script throws in plenty of calamities to nobble the diver’s escape, but didn’t quite manage – for me at least – to spark a vertiginous clammy terror.
Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause play sisters Drew and May, driving out to dive in a hire car. Clearly, there’s unspoken conflict between the two. May...

That means Drew must put her own life in jeopardy to save her sister before time runs out.”

"You have to go to the surface and call for help!" Rlje Films has revealed the trailer for an underwater survival thriller titled The Dive, from German filmmaker Maximilian Erlenwein. This is actually a remake of a Scandinavian film called Breaking Surface, which has the same plot except in Norway. In this new one, two sisters go diving at a beautiful, remote location. One is struck by a rock underwater from a landslide, leaving her trapped 28 meters below. With dangerously low levels of oxygen and cold temperatures at these depths, it is up to her sister to save her – Drew must make life-and-death decisions with no outside help in sight... The thriller stars Sophie Lowe as Drew and Louisa Krause as May – the one trapped. This looks super scary! Especially for anyone afraid of deep water. This trailer plays like 127 Hours, but underwater. If you're already nervous of Scuba diving,...

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
Hollywood and the truth aren't on speaking terms; it's a business founded on make-believe, after all. That's why it's the perfect setting for "Barry." I've written before that the series questions whether people can truly change, and its answer is that most settle for just pretending to be somebody else. Reckoning with the truth can be hard, and the series' epilogue shows how yet another comforting lie won out over reality.
The last scene of the series is John Berkman (Jaeden Martell), the teenage son of Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg), watching "The Mask Collector" — a highly inaccurate, sensationalized version of his father's life and how it intertwined with the life of acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). "Barry" has always had a satirical outlook on the entertainment industry, and "The Mask Collector" — an overt critique of the true-crime...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the series finale of HBO‘s Barry.
“Wow.”
Not only is this the title of the Barry series finale, written and directed by co-creator and star, Bill Hader. It’s also, naturally, the sentiment with which we, as an audience, are left.
By the end of the episode, Hader’s hitman-turned-actor is dead, even if he was about to turn himself in to the police, shot in the chest and head by his one-time acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). Also dead is NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), who’s shot after a stand-off with Fuches (Stephen Root).
Barry’s acting-class love Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and son John (Zachary Golinger) survive the shoutout at NoHo Hank’s offices, where they were being held captive, after Sally admits to John that both she and Barry are murderers, with Fuches disappearing into the wind. We...

Writer, artist, and director Dash Shaw’s adult animated fantasy film Cryptozoo is a morality play masquerading as a dark reflection of Jurassic Park. In that film, dinosaurs were brought back to life through DNA and put on display. Cryptozoo does the same with cryptids, which are mythological creatures who have teased mankind’s imagination since the dawn of civilization.
Cryptozoo is set in 1967 San Francisco, a time of civil unrest, disobedience and oppression, and the cryptids are facing the same kind of suppression as hippies like Amber (Louisa Krause) and Matthew (Michael Cera), but on a far more mythic level. Military minds want to weaponize the cryptids, putting them in a prison camp, while they study what makes these things tick. Well-meaning and animal loving zookeeper Joan (Grace Zabriskie) and her assistant Lauren Gray (Lake Bell), prefer they are kept in what they see as a Garden of Eden.

"We can only greet the strange and unusual with love." Mubi in the UK has debuted another official trailer for the psychedelic, mind-expanding hand-drawn animated film Cryptozoo, which initially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. As cryptozookeepers struggle to capture a "Baku" (a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature) they begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a cryptozoo or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown. With the voices of Lake Bell, Michael Cera, Alex Karpovsky, Zoe Kazan, Louisa Krause, Angeliki Papoulia, Thomas Jay Ryan, Peter Stormare, and Grace Zabriskie. We already featured two other trailers for this film earlier in the summer before it opened in the US (back in August), but with a European release from Mubi coming up in October, why not share some more footage. If you haven't seen this yet and you love psychedelics,...

United Artists Releasing opens Flag Day, directed and starring Sean Penn, in a uneven specialty market where the Delta Variant spike has theaters in key cities requiring proof of vaccination, theaters are hard to book, and hits have been rare since the industry reopened.
Eventually “We’ll crack the code, because good movie and good stories win out.” said Erik Lomis, President, Distribution at Uar. Older demos — the meat-and-potatoes of arthouse — “are less comfortable coming back than we all hoped. It’s a tough, tough market to crack… but there’s nothing like seeing it in a movie theater.”
The film from MGM Studios premiered at Cannes and debuts in 24 theaters in 10 markets. It expands next weekend to 24 markets and 50 theaters. “We’ll continue to roll out like that until we really step on the gas depending upon market conditions,...

"I dedicated my life to keeping Cryptids safe." Magnolia Pictures has released another official US trailer for the eccentric, psychedelic, wacky hand-drawn animated film Cryptozoo, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. In the sea (one might say glut) of contemporary animation—a form that, by its very nature, is most often supported by the ever-watchful eye of major studios—breaths of fresh air are desperately needed. Directed by Dash Shaw, with animation direction from Jane Samborski, the sui generis Cryptozoo truly galvanized us at Sundance, our critic calling it “one of the most gorgeous works of American animation in ages.”
You’ll find that quote in the trailer Magnolia have released ahead of Cryptozoo‘s August 20 release. Having not seen the film myself, I’m rather jazzed by what’s here—ever shot offering something new to observe, a gorgeous score to boot. As Juan Barquin said, “With John Carroll Kirby’s haunting and seductive original music still playing in my head long after the credits have rolled, Cryptozoo has embedded itself into my mind. Every fascinating creature has been brought...

“Cryptozoo” broke out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as one of the most innovative animated features of the year. Animator turned director Dash Shaw (“My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea”) builds a psychedelic world like you’ve never seen, envisioning hallucinatory creatures and casting voice talents Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Michael Cera, Louisa Krause, Peter Stormare, Thomas Jay Ryan, and Grace Zabriskie. Watch the exclusive official trailer for the film below.
A moving collage of rich, hand-drawn animation, where nearly every frame is a visual stunner, the film follows “cryptozookeepers through a richly drawn hallucinatory world as they struggle to capture a baku (a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature) and begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a zoo, or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown,” according to the synopsis.

Exclusive: In an interesting international tie-up, UK sales firm Protagonist Pictures and Germany’s 7500 and Stowaway producer Augenschein are teaming up to co-represent worldwide rights on select English-language movies.
Protagonist will serve as executive producers on the films in the new partnership and work with Augenschein to source finance for the projects. The companies will invest a portion of the funds generated by the sales into the co-development of select projects, with the aim of building a co-production slate.
The strategic alliance is not fully exclusive and will not prevent either company from continuing to work with others.
This is a smart move to bolster prominence in a market in which the streamers are increasingly dominant. We’ve heard for a while about the potential for sellers and distributors teaming up to increase their pulling power and distribution footprints.

Port Authority, filmmaker Danielle Lessovitz’s gritty debut feature, is “so New York” that one of its least surprising traits is that Martin Scorsese is credited as executive producer. Opening in the cold, shadow-filled halls of the metro transportation hub that provides the film its title, the narrative follows Paul (Fionn Whitehead), a twentysomething arriving in from Pittsburgh, as he attempts to get in touch with his estranged sister (Louisa Krause). A bloody altercation on the subway leads to a chance encounter that connects Paul to a few (temporary) friends, odd jobs, and shelters to live in. One evening, Paul meets […]

“Here Today,” starring Billy Crystal as a venerable TV comedy writer and Tiffany Haddish as the saintly, rough-around-the-edges street singer who becomes his unlikely pal, is a movie that feels like it could have been made 30 years ago: a friendly, adult-skewing, tart-witted but never nasty, jokes-and-hugs-built-around-a-serious-crisis character study that’s just ’90s enough to be comfortably old-fashioned, like an old pair of tasseled loafers. What’s good about the movie is that Crystal, who co-wrote and directed it, has an inside knowledge of the showbiz comedy world (as he demonstrated in 1992 when he directed and starred in the acerbically accomplished “Mr. Saturday Night”), and the prickly vivacity with which he portrays it roots the movie in something real.

Tiffany Haddish isn’t given much of a character to play, but at least she gets to sing
There’s an unwritten rule that when comedy professionals make movies about comedy professionals — be they stand-ups, late-night sketch stars, or talk-show gag-writers — the jokes made by the comedians-within-the-movie are almost never funny. That’s certainly the case with “Here Today,” although the thudding attempts at humor are the least of the movie’s problems.
Director, star, and co-writer Billy Crystal, back on the crying-on-the-inside beat some three decades after “Mr. Saturday Night,” wants viewers to chuckle and weep with this tale of a legendary comedy writer facing the grim realities of oncoming dementia, but “Here Today” takes pretty much everything “The Father” did right and does it wrong, and as a bonus, reduces the elemental force that is Tiffany Haddish to a magical caregiver.

Heartwarming comedy and drama directed by Crystal opens in theaters May 7
Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish may not be the first on-screen team-up that comes to mind, but we’re glad they did after seeing the first trailer for “Here Today.”
Crystal in this heartwarming comedy and drama plays a comedy writer who is slowly struggling with memory loss and other health issues, and Haddish is the woman whose boyfriend bid just $22 on Crystal in a celebrity auction and got roped into going to lunch with him alone. And as they continue to hang out, even they aren’t quite sure what the nature of their relationship is.
And it’s definitely not sexual either, as Haddish makes perfectly clear after she wakes up in his bed.
