From the very start, Tolga Karaçelik’s The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer promises unusual relationships destined to evolve in surprising ways. We’re introduced to John Magaro as Keane, a novelist stuck in a rut both personally and professionally. His marriage to Britt Lower’s Suzie is showing major cracks, as the four years Keane’s spent failing to complete his next book have taken an understandable toll.
It’s during this low point that Steve Buscemi’s mysterious character Kollmick enters the story. Claiming to be a retired serial killer, he offers to help Keane by becoming the subject of his new book. At first only interested in furthering his writing, Keane is oblivious to Kollmick’s deeper intentions.
But things become decidedly more complicated when a drunken Keane brings Kollmick home one night, only for a misunderstanding to lead...

Isn’t it true that the luster of a gold medal or the gleam of a golden statuette can pale in comparison to the enduring legacy of true legends? Dwayne Johnson has not yet clinched an Oscar, and Anthony Edwards’ basketball mastery went without an Olympic Gold’s embrace, but their names are etched into the annals of greatness, unblemished by the absence of these accolades.
They serve as shining beacons to remind us that while awards are the cherry on top, it’s the sundae of one’s influence and contributions that truly matter.

That's what producer Don Hahn said to Film School Rejects in 2018 of Disney's 1994 animated classic "The Lion King." It's an odd thing to say, given that it went on to become one of the most successful animated movies of all time. But that's looking back at it with the benefit of hindsight. “The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer” marks the English-language debut of Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik. Its initial premise, about an unhappily married couple, morphs and flips on its head until it transforms into something resembling the movie’s title, though it’s only about “a writer writing about a serial killer” in the most nominal sense. That one element gives way to an even more amusing conceit, involving crossed-wires and mistaken identities, but its wires continue to cross, until the movie mutates beyond recognition, refusing to stick to any one idea for longer than a couple of scenes.
John Magaro plays Keane, a meek but self-absorbed novelist who refuses to admit (or even recognize) that his marriage is on the rocks. His wife Suzie (Britt Lower) initially comes off as heartless and cold in her admonishment of him and in her demands for a divorce.

Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik, who made a splash in the U.S. with absurdist comedy “Butterflies,” is getting ready to premiere his first English-language film, “The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer,” in which the offbeat serial killer in question is played by Steve Buscemi.
The New York-set film, which takes Karaçelik’s comic streak in a new direction, will launch on Saturday from the Tribeca Film Festival. “The Shallow Tale” also features John Magaro (“Past Lives”) as Keane, a struggling writer who befriends the “retired” serial killer, who eventually becomes Keane’s unlikely marriage counselor as he goes through divorce proceedings with his straight-laced wife (Britt Lower), as well as the muse for his next book.

Cillian Murphy, the veteran actor known for working on projects like Peaky Blinders, Batman Begins, and, Oppenheimer, is all set for his Oscar nomination. Being an Irish actor, Murphy is extremely proud and yet, humbled, to receive a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Two years ago, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, effectively ending the constitutional right to abortion and giving states leeway to criminalize the procedure. The harrowing moment had been years in the making. Since the landmark decision was made in 1973, anti-abortion advocates have been organizing on a local level to chip away at the protection and champion its demise.
With their documentary Preconceived, debut filmmakers Sabrine Keane and Kate Dumke offer another entry point into understanding the scale and impact of this decision. The film uncovers the mysteries and contradictions shrouding crisis pregnancy centers, offices around the United States that bill themselves as abortion clinics. In reality, these places do not offer the service (or any medical ones, really). They are, rather, a covert prevention method, strategically located and advertised to attract pregnant people looking for an abortion only to mislead them. Once patients walk through the door,...

British rockers Keane have unearthed their previously unreleased song “Love Actually,” which, as the title suggests, was written for the beloved 2003 rom-com of the same name but ultimately unused by the film’s director.
In defense of Love Actually director Richard Curtis, Keane wrote the song before the then-unknown band even released their debut album, 2004’s Hopes and Fears. With Love Actually the film celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and ahead of the 20th anniversary of Hopes and Fears, Keane dug out their “Love Actually” and recorded a proper version for the first time.

It’s 2023, and you’re watching a teen drama in all its angsty, existential, emotionally nerve-wracking glory. And if you’re a 90s kid like me, you’re missing Keane’s soft notes reconciling two lovers. There’s no dreamlike hallway being walked by a goofy misfit who will go on to do great things in life. I guess what worked for the late-90s teen dramas, and of course, I can only speak for myself and the experiences of people around me, is that the high schools and colleges shown were places where we wished to imagine ourselves. The friendships formed and the hearts broken and mended were the greener grass for us to look at longingly. We wanted a slice of the world that these wonderfully flawed kids were a part of. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have wanted to go to East...

Netflix’s “Beef” follows the escalating road-rage incident between wealthy entrepreneur Amy (Ali Wong) and failing contractor Danny (Steven Yeun). As Amy and Danny relish in vengeful schemes against one another, meanwhile concealing the extent of their discontent from their friends and family, composer Bobby Krlic opted for hits from the ’90s to mark the true emotional expression the pair is craving.
“The ’90s was this golden period where people just had their hearts on their sleeves with that kind of music,” Krlic told TheWrap. “They just express things very matter of factly and in a really unique, emotional way.”
Each episode in the 10-episode series concludes with a different ’90s hit, including Incubus’ “Drive, The Offspring’s “Self Esteem,” Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” and Tori Amos’ “Cornflake Girl,” among others. “All the songs say something unique,” Krlic added.

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson are some of the most famous names to come from American Idol. These stars certainly deserve their fame, but what about the lesser-known American Idol alumni? Singers like MacKenzie Bourg and Elise Testone are sometimes forgotten in Idol discourse because of their eliminations or where their careers went after the singing competition. However, many fans believe the world has seriously slept on these artists. Here’s a closer look at Bourg, Testone, and more underrated American Idol contestants.

Let’s start with Bo Bice, the runner-up of American Idol Season 4. He took a big risk as one of the first Idol contestants within the rock genre, but it paid off. All three judges — even the notoriously brutal Simon Cowell — loved his audition song, The Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post.

Bobby Fuller was a brilliant musical talent, but his artistic legacy is as much about what could’ve been as it is about what he accomplished in his far too short life. He was a burgeoning rock and roll star on a chart-topping trajectory before he died at the age of 23 in mysterious circumstances.
Fuller’s death was officially ruled to be a suicide, but the strange details in the case compel some friends and family to believe in various conspiracy theories to rationalize the tragedy.

We love this Fritz Lang western even though it’s not particularly good; only in hindsight do we realize that the brilliant director’s intentions may have been compromised. High-key lighting does Marlene Dietrich no favors, but she scores good scenes performing with Arthur Kennedy (revenged crazed cowpoke) and Mel Ferrer (tranquilized gunslinger). Lang fans will be impressed by the gaudy, over-bright restored Technicolor, and we can always blame Howard Hughes.

What will be your first movie of 2023? If you’re reading this it’s likely you put some (let’s be honest: too much) thought into what commences the cinematic year. The Criterion Channel’s January lineup will put some good things front and center: they’re launching a 20-film cinema verité series that highlights all major figures of the form; an eight-film Mike Leigh retrospective that focuses on his little-seen, lesser-discussed BBC features produced between 1973 and 1984; a series on Abbas Kiarostami’s studies of childhood; and because you’ve either seen Eo or have it marked to watch, Jerzy Skolimowski’s three most-acclaimed films should be of equal note.

It's officially the best time of year for music-lovers. Spotify has released its 2022 Wrapped experience, and audio enthusiasts are already flocking to the streaming app to find out what their most-streamed songs mean about their personalities. But it's also time to see what the most-streamed songs of the year globally say about humanity as a whole - or about Spotify's 456 million listeners across 184 countries, at least.
Along with personalized playlists for all its users, Spotify also revealed its lists of 2022's most-streamed songs, albums, and artists on Nov. 30 as part of Spotify Wrapped. While 2021 packed some surprises, like music newcomer Olivia Rodrigo snagging the most-streamed song of the year with "Drivers License," 2022's lists were a bit more predictable, with long-established top artists holding down prime spots on the top lists.
Harry Styles ruled 2022; the lead single of his album "Harry's House," "As It Was," was the year's most-streamed song globally.

If every film is a document of its own making, then Lodge Kerrigan’s Keane, shot in real locations in and around New York City in 2004, is also a depiction of the period in which it was made. Viewing the film on the occasion of a new digital restoration by Grasshopper Film that begins a theatrical run at Film at Lincoln Center today, I was struck by the numerous billboards and posters placed atop taxi cabs that the film’s lead character, William Keane (Damian Lewis), obliviously walks by. Short of pointing at the screen, Leonardo DiCaprio-style, as I noticed a […]

Often a re-release is granted to some long-cherished classic or cult sensation. In the case of Lodge Kerrigan’s Keane, which played the festival circuit through 2004 and received a small theatrical run in 2005, a much-underseen film has been given another chance to find the audience it’s long deserved with a brand new 4K restoration courtesy Grasshopper Film.
The titular Keane (played impressively by Damian Lewis pre-Homeland and Billions) a mid-30s man suffering from schizophrenia and on a fruitless quest to find his lost daughter through the purgatory of New York City. Coming across Lynn (Amy Ryan) and her young daughter Kira (Abigail Breslin) living in precarity in the same motel, and soon finding himself taking care of the young girl while her mother tends to waiting tables. Keane begins to see her as potentially his lost daughter, which leads him down a dark path of recreating and revisiting his past.

Lodge Kerrigan’s Keane has languished on DVD for the better part of 20 years—exactly the environment that makes it the rare modern(ish) film we might call a cult favorite, but hardly deserving treatment all the same. But as evidence good things can still happen in this world, the film’s been given a 4K restoration and, courtesy Grasshopper Film, summer release.
Ahead of an August 19 opening at Film at Lincoln Center, a new preview and poster for the Steven Soderbergh-produced film has arrived. Starring Damian Lewis as a man obsessed with the abduction of his daughter, Keane was immensely well-regarded upon its debut in 2004 and it’s easier to understand why looking at this preview—the image and sound are vivid in a way that would’ve been impossible to capture outside a 35mm print.

A critically acclaimed but seldom-screened thriller is returning to the big screen next month when a new 4K restoration of “Keane” opens at Film at Lincoln Center. Lodge Kerrigan’s intimate 2005 kidnapping drama, from executive producer Steven Soderbergh, has long been heralded as a taught, no-frills thriller that boasts a phenomenal early-career performance from Damian Lewis. In the past, cinephiles were only able to watch the original DVD release of the film, but the new 4K restoration from Grasshopper Film promises to show the film to new audiences while looking better than ever before.
The movie was a festival darling in 2004, premiering at the Telluride Film Festival and eventually screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Critics praised the film’s intensity, particularly Lewis’ unhinged performance and Kerrigan’s measured but nevertheless suspenseful directing style.

Margaret Keane, the artist whose paintings of wide-eyed children inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film “Big Eyes,” died Sunday at her home in Napa, California. She was 94.
Her daughter told The New York Times reported that she died of heart failure.
In “Big Eyes,” Amy Adams played Keane in her protracted fight with her second husband over credit for her life’s work. Though Walter Keane masterfully promoted his wife’s sad, saucer-eyed waifs, it would be revealed years later that his claims to have painted them himself were entirely fraudulent.
In reality, Margaret Keane toiled in the basement for several hours a day while her husband claimed credit during his ambitious promotional efforts, including everything from Hollywood hobnobbing to TV appearances. All the while, the paintings stirred controversy and scorn in the art world as they gained widespread popularity.

Margaret Keane, whose wildly popular paintings of big-eyed, melancholy children (and later celebrities with deep pockets) became one of the most widely recognized signature artistic styles of the late 20th Century – and whose long battle with her husband over his fraudulent and lucrative claims of authorship inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film Big Eyes starring Amy Adams – died Sunday at home in Napa, California. She was 94.
Her death was reported on her official Facebook page today: “We’re sad to announce that Margaret Keane, ‘The Mother of Big Eyes, our Queen, a Modern Master and Legend’ peacefully passed away Sunday morning at her home in Napa, CA, she was 94.”
Her daughter Jane Swigert told The New York Times that the cause of death was heart failure.

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Homeland” Season 6 finale, Episode 12, “America First.”]
“Homeland” painted a frightening picture of America throughout Season 6, slowly drawing back the curtain on a massive government conspiracy that resulted in a New York City bombing and an attack on the President-Elect’s life. Thrilling enough in its storytelling, especially during the tense first 20 minutes of the finale, Season 6 was made harrowing by the timely nature of its issues to our current political culture. The latest iteration of the Showtime drama argued we, the people, are not only right to be suspicious of our government, but that its current state is dangerous on a national and personal level for everyone connected to it.
“You remember what Graham Greene said, don’t you?” Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) told Saul (Mandy Patinkin) after he’d been arrested for his part in the conspiracy to discredit President-Elect Keane (Elizabeth Marvel). “The secret services are the only real measure of a nation’s political health.

The Performer | Jessica Lange
The Show | Feud: Bette and Joan
The Episode | “Pilot” (March 5, 2017)
The Performance | Were Joan Crawford alive today, we have to think that she would have been satisfied — dare we say pleased? — with Lange’s casting in Feud. Not only has the Ryan Murphy fave won the second Oscar that always eluded Crawford, but she plays the Hollywood legend with an empathy that never fails to remind us that, behind the leading lady, there was a flesh-and-blood woman as damaged as she was determined.
In the anthology series’ first episode, Lange comes out just as Crawford would...

In three pivotal scenes – with Dar, Sekou, and Keane – we get a sense of the questions Carrie has been wrestling with internally as she decides how best to direct her talents in service to her country.
Homeland Season 6 Episode 4 is a long-overdue exploration of Carrie’s professional motivations as they stand now.
When, in exchange for dirt on Dar Adal, Keane offers Carrie the chance to lead the wholesale reform of the CIA, Carrie is once again at a crossroads. Her decision will inform her trajectory for the rest of the season and, likely, the series.
Carrie and Dar face off
It’s clear to anyone who’s paying attention that Carrie is itching like nobody’s business to go back to the CIA.
She was beaming with pride at the wily spy methods she used to secure Sekou’s freedom and she’s positioning herself for a pretty darn...

Sometimes one network really stands out, and Fox made the cut this week. From Lucifer to Scream Queens to The Exorcist, the writing was on the wall. They're trying to entertain us.
That's not to say all other networks aren't, of course. It was a really good week all around. Check out quotes from the premieres of The CW superheroes shows, the end of Halt and Catch Fire and the trio of medical dramas: Grey's Anatomy, Code Black and Chicago Med.
You won't be disappointed!
1. Lucifer Lucifer: Have you ever considered I might enjoy exploring humanity? Charlotte: They eat, darling. All they do is eat. And, then afterward... 2. Scream Queens Chanel #3: Can I just say, for the record, before we begin, that yoga is just stretching for douchebags? Cassidy Cascade: Noted. 3. The Exorcist Mother Bernadette: So. Marcus Keane. Father Bennett speaks admiringly of you. What's the phrase he used?...

Despite the fact that Homeland‘s Peter Quinn was last seen crossing over to the proverbial light in the Season 5 finale, Rupert Friend is returning for Season 6 as a full-fledged series regular — but how? And to what surprising end?

Previously, showrunner Alex Gansa had teased, “How [Quinn] is gonna be dramatized this year is going to surprise people, and it may not be what you think.” Appearing on Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, he elaborated — some.
