According to everyone associated with
Get Smart (1965), Red just would not
listen to instructions. Shots that involved the character Fang ended up
running long and costing the production a lot of money and time. In the
second season, Fang was written out of the series. On the show, it was
explained that Fang had retired from the field and was working a desk
job.
