Transporter 2
Written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen
Directed by Louis Leterrier
France, 2005
It took three full years for Frank Martin (Jason Statham) to make his return to the silver screen following the modest success that was The Transporter in 2002, but not a lot had changed in the interim, notwithstanding a few cosmetic details. Frank still offers his services privately to whomever is willing to pay, only now he has established himself in Miami. In very James Bondian fashion, the previous film’s leading lady is nowhere to be found. This time, it is Audrey (Amber Valleta), beautiful wife to brilliant doctor Jefferson Billings (Matthew Modine), who opines over the rugged entrepreneur. The Billings have hired Frank a month ago to drive their young son Jack to and from school. Frank has, rather surprisingly, developed something of a rapport with the youth, which prompts him into action on...

With the stunt-filled Fast Five out on Blu-ray and DVD this week, here’s our list of some outlandish movie action sequences that appear to defy all known physical laws…
Action heroes are always performing remarkable feats in movies, and surviving accidents that would kill ordinary mortals in an instant – it’s something we practically expect from our Hollywood blockbusters. Sometimes, though, filmmakers just go that little bit too far, resulting in scenes that look so unexpectedly outlandish that we can only sit in our cinema seats and think, “Now, hang on a minute…”
This list, then, is devoted to those action sequences that appear to defy all the known laws of nature. This isn’t to say they aren’t fun or memorable – it’s often the case that such scenes are fun and memorable precisely because they’re over the top – but their presence, in many cases, sticks out like a sore thumb.

The Good Guy is one of those little movies that too often gets lost in the shuffle. Multiplexes are dominated by Hollywood tentpoles and sequels these days. Even the smallest theaters in malls, the ones originally intended to showcase art house films or indie pictures, now simply serve as overflow spaces for the big guns. That's a shame, and the result of it is that people must find modest productions like The Good Guy on DVD and Blu-ray, on pay-per-view, or eventually cable. To be honest, The Good Guy isn't an overlooked treasure. It's not an epic that loses anything by not seeing on a large screen. It's just a nice movie with an appealing cast -- Scott Porter, Alexis Bledel, Bryan Greenberg, Aaron Yoo, Anna Chlumsky, Kate Nauta, and Andrew McCarthy -- that deserved a better fate. Beth lives in New York City and she has Big Apple-sized aspirations of landing a good job,...

Horror icon Robert Englund – the original Freddy Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” fame – is slashing his way back into action this week, just in time for Halloween, in a new web series called “Fear Clinic.” In the series, Englund portrays a maniacal genius named Dr. Andover who is obsessed with finding new ways to cure people of their greatest fears – even if it kills them.
Last night on “Attack of the Show” Englund spoke at length about his new character. “I’m kind of a misunderstood genius,” he explained. “But I did something bad in the states. I lost my medical license and had to do community service at a prison. Guess who I ran into – Kane Hodder, the original Jason! And I drag his hockey pucked ass down to my clinic south of the border.”

Serena Williams powered her way to her third Wimbledon title on Saturday, beating her older sister Venus in the women's singles final.
But the tennis-playing twosome nearly had another set of abilities altogether when they were in line for an X-Men movie role.
Brett Ratner, who directed X-Men: The Last Stand and was dating 27-year-old Serena back in 2005, was apparently interested in casting either of the sisters in the role of a mutant who was a bisexual hooker.
The Sun newspaper reported: "Brett feels either of the girls would be fantastic for the role, which is a superhero who oozes sex appeal. Her great power is the ability to seduce anyone."
The character was Stacy X (earlier called X-Stacy), whose real name is Miranda Leevald.
She is mutant with fighting skills, scaly snake-skin and the power to emit pheromones that, through skin-to-skin contact, can control the emotional and physical responses of anyone she touches,...

The guys over at Quiet Earth dug up the trailer for a new Aussie flick called Nine Miles Down, which comes to us from Storm Warning/Long Weekend screenwriter Everett de Roche and Mute Witness helmer Anthony Waller. That’s a very sexy pedigree, if you ask me.
The film stars former Highlander Adrian Paul as Jack, a security patrolman enlisted to figure out what happened to a crew of drillers in the Australian outback. When he gets to the site, he finds a beautiful geologist name Jc (Kate Nauta), who claims to the only survivor of the research team. The rest were killed after violence took over following the discovery of a cavern an unprecedented nine miles below the surface of the Earth. It all makes some sense, but as things progress Jack begins to suspect something supernatural is going down.
No word on a U.S. release for Nine Miles Down yet,...

NEW YORK -- The filmmakers reveal their James Bond-like franchise aspirations a little too nakedly in this sequel to the 2002 thriller that became a sleeper international hit, but it must be said that "Transporter 2" really does deliver the goods. A fast-paced B-movie that features a series of spectacularly staged and choreographed action set pieces, this second effort starring British actor Jason Statham as the taciturn but deadly driver will no doubt surpass the original's boxoffice take and clearly pave the way for future installments.
Switching from a BMW to a stunning black Audi A8 that complements his character's standard uniform of black suit and tie, Statham again demonstrates his blend of charisma and physical prowess in his second go-round as Frank Martin, the former Special Forces operative who serves as a "transporter" for hire. Having relocated from the French Mediterranean to Miami, Frank has a temporary gig working for a wealthy couple (Matthew Modine, Amber Valletta), for whom he drives their 6-year-old son (Hunter Clary) to and from school. Much like Denzel Washington's similar character in "Man on Fire", Frank has developed a real bond with his young charge.
So he naturally springs into action when the tyke is kidnapped by a gang of ruthless criminals, led by a typically tanned Eurotrash villain (Alessandro Gassman, son of Vittorio) and his sexy homicidal girlfriend (Kate Nauta), who prefers to shoot her guns while wearing only her underwear. Tracking down the kidnappers while simultaneously avoiding the authorities -- thanks to his French buddy (Francoise Berleand) who is conveniently being held at the police station -- Frank uncovers a plot to ingest the kid with an airborne poison that will kill everyone with whom he comes into contact, including his DEA father.
The plot, of course, is merely an excuse for the nonstop action sequences, superbly staged by director Louis Leterrier and martial arts choreographer Cory Yuen (they were, respectively, the "artistic director" and director of the original). Highlights include a car chase taking place on the beach and a multilevel parking lot, among other locations; a race between a bus and a speedboat, the latter of which naturally takes to land; an amazing fight sequence in which Frank dispatches a gang of hoods with a fire hose; and a battle on a small jet that culminates with the plane crashing into the ocean.
The last episode well illustrates the over-the-top aspects of the action, which veers into outlandish Bond-style territory without having the budget to support it. The main character is such a compelling figure that he really doesn't need to be showcased in such credibility-stretching sequences, presented without a trace of tongue-in-cheek humor.

Ratner Spices Up 'X-Men'
Brett Ratner is spicing up the new X-Men 3 movie with the addition of his very own fantasy - a sex siren mutant who seduces her opponents rather than battles them. Ratner takes over from departing director Bryan Singer, who made the first two movies, and the Rush Hour film maker is determined to leave his mark on the comic book series. The new mutant has not yet been cast but unknowns Kate Nauta and Aya Sumika will reportedly audition. A source tells Pagesix.com the mutant will be, "An unbelievably hot and sexy hooker. Her super power is that she secretes a pheromone that helps her to seduce men. She can seduce anyone." The source adds of the auditions, "They are open to all ethnicities who are in their early-to-mid 20s."...
