Albert Azaryan is a Soviet gymnast, three-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion, two-time European champion, eleven-time USSR champion. Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
Albert Azaryan was 14 years old when his father died and he had to help his mother. He began working in a forge. Only at the age of seventeen he began to practice gymnastics. In 1956 he graduated from the Yerevan State Institute of Physical Culture. Azaryan was the strongest gymnast of his time in ring exercises. Since the mid-fifties, the 'cross' that Azaryan performed has been called the 'Azaryan Cross'. It was first performed in 1953 in Leningrad.
After finishing his sports career, he headed a gymnastics school in Yerevan, and also was involved in refereeing international competitions; in the mid-70s he worked under a contract in the Netherlands. The son of Albert Azaryan, Eduard Azaryan, as part of the USSR national team, was the champion of the Moscow Olympics in team competitions.
