Shalmashi comes from a family with Iranian-Kurdish heritage, she was born in France and raised in the Netherlands. She graduated at the Netherlands Film Academy and received her MA at the Utrecht School of Arts. Shalmashi wrote and directed several awarded short films and single plays and is writing her feature length director's debut. Beri Shalmashi also adapted Dutch-Iranian author Kader Abdolah's bestseller 'The house of the mosque', an epic story about Iran during its revolution. She is a contributor to Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, De Filmkrant and advisor at Nederlands Filmfonds. Her most recent work, Big Village, an interactive film co-directed by Lyangelo Vasquez, got nominated for Prix Europa and won the first prize at Zilveren Camera, storytelling category. Shalmashi is CEO of Avanti, a leading platform for talks, stories and events around social topics, cook book writer and former tutor at Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and Salahaddin University in Erbil.
