As a veteran in the communications and media industries, Derek started his career as an intern with ABC Radio Networks marketing department. His internship soon became a position as the Production Manager with ABC Radio Networks International serving Europe, Asia, and Latin America. While at ABC Radio he worked with a number of formats and programs from Radio Disney, Tom Joyner Morning Show, and The Doug Banks Show. He later developed his own program for the Armed Forces Network entitled The Hip Hop House Party and was responsible for the cast and entire production including interviewing a host of artists from Ice Cube to the Wayans Brothers to Jay-Z.
After leaving ABC Radio Networks Derek teamed up with a colleague in 1998 and went on to co-write, co-produce, and co-direct two gospel stage plays, one starring 80's R&B group Yarbrough and Peoples. Both were performed at Dallas' Majestic Theater and the Dallas Convention Center. Praised by The Dallas Morning News as up and comers in theater.
With his thirst to continue growing in media and technology, he began working as Production Manager at AMS Productions, the leading production company in the Southwest. There Derek began to build on his leadership skills with a crew of photogs, audio, and lighting staff working on multiple projects for brands such as Dillards, Electrolux, and Texas Instruments. He also gained experience in live shots, post production, and various satellite feed technologies.
In April 2005 he started MassFx Creative Services, which is now MassFX Creative Group LLC. Armed with a cutting edge staff of designers, public relations, and marketing creatives as his support partners, he embarked upon building something truly great, offering a number of services from graphic design, web development, event planning and execution to broadcast media strategies and production.
In 2017 his hunger for writing began to return and he wrote and produced his first short film, The Richards Experiment. While broadening his network, his writing has allowed him to add a number of short films and features to his resume.
