Three years ago, Daniel Craig's time as James Bond came to an end. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga's "No Time to Die" rather boldly gave Craig's version of Bond a proper ending. With that, all eyes are now on the future. Over the last few years, various rumors, suggestions, and bits of speculation have cropped up regarding who will take over as 007 in the next iteration of the legendary franchise. As of now, nothing has been confirmed by Eon Productions or the film's producers. That said, they do know what they're looking for when it comes to finding Craig's successor, and there are a few key requirements.
In a conversation with The Independent, longtime franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli, daughter of the late Albert "Cuddy" Broccoli, and her brother, Michael G. Wilson, spoke about the future of "James Bond" -- specifically, who will play the next Bond on screen. "It's a big decision,...

Riding high off his satirical send-up of superhero cinema, The Franchise, director Sam Mendes tells Inverse that he doesn't anticipate another chance at James Bond. The name’s Mendes, Sam Mendes. The Bond franchise has been ongoing for more than 60 years and 25 films, so it’s no surprise that there have been many repeat directors. But Sam Mendes was the first to helm multiple Bond films since the ‘80s (an era ruled by John Glen), guiding Daniel Craig through the 2010s. After Skyfall and Spectre, the torch was passed to Cary Joji Fukunaga. So will Sam Mendes go the Terence Young route, sitting one installment out and returning with thunder? Never say never…but probably not.
Speaking with Inverse, Sam Mendes credited the Bond films with coming at a crucial time in his career but doesn’t see it as a guarantee for his future. “Never say never, to quote the man, but I would doubt it. It was very good for me at that moment in my life. I felt like it shot me out of some old habits.

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

Splashy Last Week On The Lido
Uncharacteristically buzzy: The Venice Film Festival ends tomorrow after an uncharacteristically buzzy second week. The festival is usually front-loaded, with the splashiest titles playing early. This year, however, Alberto Barbera, who dished to Andreas, said the lengthy runtimes of some competition titles meant the spoils had to spread across both weeks. Enter Brady Corbet’s 215-minute post-wwii epic The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Stacy Martin, Raffey Cassidy, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola. The pic was well received, landing a 13-minute ovation from the Sala Grande audience. Pedro Almodóvar launched his English-language debut The Room Next Door with his leading ladies Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

I remember the moment I realized how much I love television. It was March 2, 2014, and for the first time in years, I skipped the Oscar telecast completely. I did it to watch a new episode of "True Detective," which was nearing the end of its phenomenal, influential, heavily-discussed first season. The show's grip on American pop culture that year was incredible: It won five Emmys, inspired countless parodies, and lit up the internet with theories and Easter egg hunts. People read Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow" after the word "Carcosa" popped up in the show. Viewers made gifs and edits of every single shot of Matthew McConaughey's hilariously bleak protagonist. And, importantly, people in Hollywood clearly started searching for the next "True Detective."
In the years that followed the show's first season, a whole host of TV series appeared that clearly followed the "True Detective" rulebook: Slow-burn criminal investigations,...

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

In retrospect, the episode “Charlie Work” would be better named “Adam Sklena Work” – but Trundle probably wouldn’t have been able to pronounce that title, let alone spell it.
Back in the mid-2010s, it seemed like every film bro and hotshot dude director was rock hard for exhilarating, multi-minute-long tracking shots. In 2014 alone, we got a double-whammy of Alejandro Iñárritu’s essentially two-hour-long take with Birdman and Cary Fukunaga’s flashy, six-minute, single-take sequence in True Detective that had reviewers across the internet crying “Peak TV!”
So during the planning stages of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 10 in late 2014, perennial Sunny director Matt Shakman probably looked around at all the showy camerawork that drew acclaim to so many other directors at the time and decided that he wanted his own long-take statement sequence to turn the upcoming episode “Charlie Work” into a cinematic masterpiece. Maybe don’t call it a vampire’s curse, but Marvel’s “Blade” has undergone so many delays that fans wonder if the film will ever happen. In what feels like another blow to the project, which has seemingly undergone countless rewrites and has been rethought and re-envisioned several times if the rumors are true, The Wrap reports that the film has lost its director Yann Demange, known for the action thriller, “71” and “White Boy Rick” (Demange was once in the mix to direct Bond 25 before Cary Fukunaga took over).

The lead up to the fifth episode of "True Detective" season 1 is already filled with shocking twists and turns, as the Dora Lange case starts to take a murkier turn. In episode 5, detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) track down a covert meth lab in a Louisiana bayou, where Reggie (Charles Halford) and Dewall Ledoux (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) are camping out amid a minefield of explosive traps. Cohle pulls a gun on Dewall without hesitation while Hart checks out the interior of the hut, where he comes across two kidnapped children, who look severely traumatized. Enraged, he shoots Reggie in the face, while Dewall makes a run for it, and dies after tripping over one of the explosive traps. Body parts fly in all directions as the two detectives look on in horror, as the price for their impulsivity would be to concoct an elaborate lie...

At long last, Kathryn Bigelow is returning to filmmaking. After 2017’s Detroit, she was developing the David Koepp-scripted thriller Aurora for Netflix but has now moved on to another project for the company. The untitled thriller will unfold in real-time at the White House as a missile attack threatens the United States. THR reports former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who also wrote Jackie, scripted the project based on Bigelow’s idea. No additional details were revealed but with Netflix now greenlighting the project, here’s hoping it kicks off before the end of the year.

Guy Ritchie has another film in the works that doubles down on the British upper class.
The prolific director — already behind this year’s Netflix hit “The Gentlemen” and WWII action thriller “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” — has unveiled his 18th feature film, “Wife and Dog,” with Black Bear launching sales in Cannes.
Plot details and cast are currently being kept under wraps, but Variety hears that with the film, Ritchie will return to the colorful, back-stabbing world of British aristocracy that he explored in both “The Gentlemen” Netflix series and 2019 feature. “Wife and Dog” will shoot in October, with an A-list cast reportedly in negotiations to star.
Ritchie wrote the screenplay and produces alongside long-time producing partner Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Executive producers include Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler for Black Bear.

It’s been three years since Cary Fukunaga’s most recent film, the 007 feature, “No Time to Die.” Since then, it’s been a bit rough for the filmmaker. He was at the center of sexual misconduct allegations from women in Hollywood. While no legal action was taken, it did mean that when “Masters of the Air” was released, the Apple TV+ war series he directed some episodes of, Fukunaga was not part of the marketing.

When one thinks of auteur-driven Peak TV in the streaming age, the first shows that generally come to mind are “House Of Cards” (2013) with David Fincher at the helm (at least for the first few eps), “True Detective” (2014) by director Cary Fukunaga, and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” (2014). Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

Three of the predicted five Best Limited Series Emmy nominees — “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Shōgun” and “Masters of the Air” — are new shows, while the other two are, well, not. “Fargo,” in first place in the odds,” and “True Detective: Night Country,” in third, are competing with their respective fifth and fourth seasons. Both Emmy-winning shows, the anthology series debuted within months of each other in 2014, and if they both make the cut, it’ll be the very first time they’ll go head to head in a series race, 10 years late.

HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.

Actor Michelle Monaghan was a part of HBO’s long-running anthology series True Detective in its first season. But as much praise as True Detective received, it also experienced its share of criticism. The show’s depiction of its female cast was a point of scrutiny for the series early on, which Monaghan couldn’t have disagreed with more.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson weren’t the only actors who received attention during True Detective’s first season. The hit show had a few notable female actors a part of its cast as well. Monaghan co-starred right alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, playing the latter’s wife in the crime thriller. She committed to the show after the show’s director, Cary Fukunaga, and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto sent her a script.

Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.
