Shailene Woodley scored her first-ever Emmy nomination for playing Jane Chapman on the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies.” But, according to Woodley, she nearly turned down the role.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Woodley expressed her excitement over the opportunity to work with Jean-Marc Vallée, calling him an “incredible artist and filmmaker.” However, because Woodley had prior plans to travel to India on a journey of self-exploration, her involvement in the project was initially going to be delayed.

That is until Laura Dern stepped in. Woodley recalled how Dern, who played Renata Klein on “Big Little Lies,” ultimately convinced her to take on the role of Jane.

“She just said, ‘Listen, I know where you’re at in your life, I’ve been there before too. It’s a lot, this world is an illusion, but what isn’t an illusion is what you love to do.

Parts of Gia’s arc are repeated from previous Three Women episodes, especially when she met her mentor, Gay Talese, who suggested she have sex with married people for her book.

That seemed like such a creepy idea. It also made me wonder how much Lisa Taddeo went through before jumping in a van and driving across the country to meet subjects.

After all, Gia’s story was based on her, and Gia’s arc was very compelling. It made sense that she wanted to talk about other women’s journeys in relationships.

There is a particular scene in White Bird that made me gasp out loud. The scene was not violent; however, watching a teacher insist on chaperoning the Jewish children pulled from her class because they are her responsibility felt like the equivalent of me yelling out during a horror film, “Don’t go in there!”

You cannot argue against how effective White Bird is in terms of engagement. Watching teachers, priests, and neighbors risk, and at times outright sacrifice, themselves to protect Jewish children is compelling, if not heartbreaking. Disturbingly, this has practically become a Hollywood trope.

There are several scenes like the one I described above. Saviors appear on the screen and vanish from sight, never to be seen again. That’s what makes Marc Forster’s White Bird haunting at times—kindness is an enduring theme, but it comes at the cost of one’s life.

I love movies like Killer Heat, not just the movie Killer Heat. This type of knockoff fiction can be recycled and found in any big-box department store, where people gobble it up for summer reading. The film offers virtually nothing new on the subject.

Even from the clothes, setting, and moments of shadowy cinematography. So, studios do what they do: cast attractive leads and saturate the story with a faux-noir style, which many will mistake for originality.

The film is standard by the numbers, dusting off the playbook and following the step-by-step mystery genre production. I almost think the talented cast signed on for the Greek island location entirely.

It turns out “Suits: L.A.” had 12 million reasons to relocate from Vancouver, where it shot its pilot, to actual Los Angeles. Ok, 12,000,001 if you count the title.

On Tuesday, the California Film Commission revealed the 19 new projects it has awarded a total of $51.6 million in tax credits to as enticement to shoot in the Golden State. Only one was a TV series: “Suits: LA” has been granted about $12 million in tax incentives through the Soundstage Filming Tax Credit Program to move to Los Angeles.

The latest list includes three big-budget feature films and 15 independent films. Of note are the long-rumored (and now confirmed!) Janis Joplin biopic starring and produced by Shailene Woodley. That one got $2.5 million. Another $2.5 million will go to the Artists Equity film “Killing Gawker” — the one for which Ben Affleck is reportedly casting himself as Hulk Hogan. Shailene Woodley has been tapped to play the rock icon Janis Joplin in a new biopic.

Variety reports that Woodley has joined the cast of the film and will produce as well. The yet-to-be-named biopic is being funded by a $2.5 million tax credit from the state of California’s Film Commission, and per Variety, will have a $10 million budget for “qualified expenditures.”

We don’t know much else about the film, but Woodley wrote in a statement that she’s excited to tell Joplin’s story in California specifically. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” she wrote.

Another day, another “Community” movie update – but this one’s good. The feature film continuation of the beloved comedy series scored a tax credit from the California Film Commission to shoot in the Golden State, marking a significant step forward for the production. The “Community” movie’s expenditure is set at $16.3 million, $3.3 million of which they’ll get back as part of the tax credit program.

The film, written by Dan Harmon, will reunite the entire cast from the NBC series to fulfill the show’s “six seasons and a movie” prophecy. A production start date has not yet been set, but Harmon spent the last year working on the screenplay to get the film in shape.

Overall, the Film and Television Tax Credit Program allocated $39.6 million to three big-budget films and 15 independent films on Tuesday, while another $12 million was awarded to “Suits: LA” through the Soundstage Filming Tax Credit Program.

In the latest example of 30 Rock being less sitcom and more Nostradamus-esque prophecy, former American teenager and big little liar Shailene Woodley has been cast to star as Janis Joplin in an upcoming biopic. This is per Variety, which reports that the film will be funded by California tax credits.

In an interview with Bustle, the Three Women star was asked if she felt she was “misunderstood” after receiving backlash for sharing Melania’s open letter on her Instagram Story. Woodley explained that upon reading the former first lady’s words, she thought, “This is so beautiful.”

“I was in circles of people that I deeply respect — friends, colleagues, progressive, very intelligent thinkers, shakers and movers — and many of them were saying, ‘He missed!
