Amazon Prime has given Roland Emmerich’s Those About To Die the thumbs up, taking rights to the upcoming gladiator action series across most of Europe. Anthony Hopkins stars as Roman emperor Vespasian in the 10-part series, inspired by the nonfiction book of the same name by Daniel P. Mannix.

Amazon picked up exclusive rights to Those About To Die for its services in the five largest territories in Europe (Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain) as well as in Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Poland, Turkey, Andorra, Monaco, Luxembourg, and Belgium. Amazon will have exclusive rights for the show in those territories, with free-tv rights negotiated separately. Servus TV has secured the free TV window for Austria for the show, which will go out on Peacock in the U.S.. NBCUniversal’s streaming platform gave a straight-to-series order for the show.

Nine actors have joined the cast of the upcoming Those About To Die series. The Peacock series, inspired by the nonfiction book by Daniel Mannix, is set in the time of gladiators and follows the “complex and corrupt world of ancient Rome’s spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition.” The book was previously used as the basis for the Gladiator feature film.

Iwan Rheon, Liraz Charhi, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, Rupert Penry-Jones, Eneko Sagardoy, Pepe Barroso, Gonçalo Almeida, Kyshan Wilson, and Alicia Edogamhe have been cast in the show. There are a trio of sword-and-sandal epics in the works, including a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning 2000 movie Gladiator and a reboot of Starz’ groundbreaking TV series Spartacus.

The curious surge of Ancient Rome titles in the pipeline seems to be purely coincidental, but it also makes sense given that studios have been searching for the next genre title that might break out — particularly since the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones — and given the revival of another muscular old-time Hollywood genre, the Western, following the explosive popularity of Yellowstone. Each project has roots in a different take on the material, and two of the projects had major casting news within the past week.

Roland Emmerich’s large-scale gladiator series “Those About to Die,” starring Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian, has started shooting at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios.

Several new cast members have been announced, including “Game of Thrones” alumn Iwan Rheon.

Rheon, who in “Thrones” played the villainous Ramsay Bolton – and can currently be seen in Emmerich-produced film “The Magic Flute” – will replace Lorenzo Richelmy who has exited the Peacock show due to scheduling conflicts.

Also joining the “Those About to Die” cast are Liraz Charhi (“Tehran”) who will play Berenice, Queen of the conquered Judeans; and Rupert Penry-Jones (“The Batman”) as retired general Marsus who aspires to succeed Vespasian on the imperial throne (they are pictured above).

Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon is one of nine joining the cast of Peacock’s epic gladiator drama Those About to Die, as principal photography on the Roland Emmerich show kicked off at Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios.

Rheon, best known as Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones, has has been cast as ambitious crime boss Tenax and will replace Lorenzo Richelmy, who dropped out over scheduling conflicts. Rheon is appearing in The Magic Flute and has appeared in the BAFTA-winner Misfits and Netflix’s The Dirt.

Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon, Vikings actor Johannes Haukur Johannesson and Alicia Edogamhe, best-known for Netflix series Summertime, are among the new additions to the ensemble cast, as well as Tehran actress Liraz Charhi, Britain’s Rupert Penry-Jones (Mi-5), Elite actor Eneko Sagardoy, Gonçalo Almeida (Amor Amor), Kyshan Wilson (Viola) and Pepe Barroso (Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming Gran Turismo).

Apple TV Plus has set a May 6 premiere date for the second season of Israeli-produced International Emmy Award-winning global espionage thriller “Tehran.”

The new season stars Glenn Close, who appears in the first-look teaser image, and Niv Sultan, who returns as Mossad agent Tamar Rabinyan, as well as Shaun Toub and Shervin Alenabi. The series will debut with the first two episodes, followed by new weekly installments each Friday during its eight-episode season through June 17.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has renewed its first non-English language original series, Israeli espionage thriller drama Tehran, for a second season.

Apple TV+ stepped in to co-produce with Israeli broadcaster Kan 11 Season 1 of Tehran, from Moshe Zonder and Omri Shenhar, and carry internationally the Israel-Iran spy thriller. Starting with Season 2, Tehran will be an Apple Original worldwide. In Israel, it will continue to air on Kan 11 as well as on Apple TV+.

The renewal for the seres, produced by Alon Aranya, comes four months after Tehran‘s premiere on Apple TV+ to strong reviews. Both Zonder and Aranya have deals at the streamer.

Andrews Landry Family book series includes “Ruby,” “Pearl in the Mist,” “All That Glitters” and “Hidden Jewel,” all of which are set to be adapted by Lifetime and will debut in 2021.

The first trailer and poster for director Yaron Zilberman’s feature debut A Late Quartet, which premieres at Tiff tonight, have been released.

The award-winning documentarian Zilberman’s film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken and Mark Ivanir (Schindler’s List).

The members of a world-renowned string quartet trying to stay together ‘as they mark their 25th anniversary in the face of illness, competing egos, and insuppressible lust.’ The group is rocked by the diagnosis of Parkinson’s of their first violinist (Walken).

The more you agree with Fair Game politically, the more it will work for you. As a liberal myself, Doug Liman’s story of the Valerie Plame affair succeeded in getting me angry. The film does not take an unbiased approach but that is Ok considering the story it’s telling. However even if you agree with the film’s message, the film still has to work on it’s own as a movie and Fair Game definitely does. It is a taut, intense, smart, and sometimes harrowing political thriller following the days that led up to the bombing of Iraq and it’s aftermath. A brand new trailer has been released for Fair Game, the latest movie to star Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi and Nicholas Sadler. Yahoo debuted the trailer last night for the movie which is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity). I had no idea what this movie was about before I watched the trailer and was pleasantly surprised. Other than the deep husky voice over that they’ve shoved on it (why do they think they sound good?!) it looks like a great, intense thriller which I think has potential to be a great movie.

Here's the first trailer for a pretty typical plain looking international thriller from director Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith). No joke, it seems like every bit of dialogue that we hear in this trailer we've heard before in other movies like this. It's almost like a parody of the type of movie it's supposed to be. This is surprising because the movie has a solid cast of actors which includes Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich,Liraz Charchi and Nicholas Sadler.

Penn and Watts had such chemistry in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 21 Grams. Looks as though lightning may have striked twice casting these two together in what looks to be a powerful film along with their strong performances.

The political drama premiered to decent reviews at Cannes this past May and now it is gearing up for a late fall release. Enjoying another day of the Cannes International Film Festival, Naomi Watts was spotted at the “Fair Game” photo call today (May 20).

The “King Kong” hottie hobnobbed with Liraz Charhi outside the Palais des Festivals, sporting a lavender dress.

As for her work with Woody Allen in “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” Naomi says she was nervous collaborating with the legendary writer/director.

“I had heard he doesn’t like to talk much and it can be difficult to know what he wants. He was shy at first but after that he was charming to work with. He’s very entertaining. It’s true he doesn’t yell or say when he’s happy with a scene, he just moves on. Usually between scenes you go back to your trailer to catch up on email or make a call but not on this movie. I didn’t want to miss a single Woody moment.

Actress Liraz Charhi joins Naomi Watts in the new feature Fair Game, from director Doug "The Bourne Identity" Liman, focusing on real-life CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. Watts will play Plame, with Sean Penn as her husband ambassador Joseph Wilson. Based on a memoir by Plame, Charhi takes the role of 'Sawsan', an Iraqi doctor in Cleveland that Plame sent undercover to Baghdad to gather intelligence on a nuclear program in exchange for bringing Sawsan's brother over to the Us. The movie will reveal how Plame's 'secret agent' status was compromised by a strategic leak from the last Republican administration, in retaliation for a 2003 article her husband wrote claiming the Us government manipulated intelligence on Iraq...

Earlier today we wrote about the news that Israeli actress Liraz Charhi had been added to the cast of Fair Game, the Doug Liman-directed movie about outed CIA operative Valerie Plame. And the casting news just keeps coming-- we've been told that Noah Emmerich has also joined the cast, and will star in the film alongside Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. The press release doesn't say who the Little Children and Pride and Glory actor will be playing, or whether he'll join the shoot in the Middle East or keep filming back home. In the film Watts will be playing Plame, the CIA agent whose secret identity was revealed as an effort of the Bush White House to get back at her husband, Joseph Wilson (Penn), who had been critical of the administration's efforts to start war in Iraq.

• Dustin Hoffman has joined Paul Giamatti in Richard J. Lewis' indie drama "Barney's Version," based on the novel by Mordecai Richler. Doug Liman's Fair Game, the story of CIA operative Valerie Plame and the massive fallout that occurred when a member of the Bush administration revealed her identity, has been underway filming in New York for a while now. But now that the production has moved over to the Middle East, a new cast member is jumping on board. Liraz Charhi, an Israeli actress, will play Sawsan, the Iraqi doctor who was living in Cleveland when Plame asked her to go undercover in Baghdad. THR doesn't specify exactly where they're filming in the Middle East, but we can be pretty safe in assuming it's not Baghdad. You probably wouldn't recognize Charhi from anything-- most of her credits come from Israeli television and one hit Israeli film. But hey, for your fourth acting role, acting alongside Naomi Watts (as Plame) and Sean Penn (as husband Joe Wilson) ain't bad!

The Israeli actress will play the fictional Sawsan, an Iraqi doctor in Cleveland whom Plame sends undercover to Baghdad to gather intelligence on Saddam Hussein's nuclear program in exchange for bringing her brother to the U.S.

The movie centers on how Plame's status was compromised because of a leak from the Bush administration, allegedly in retaliation for a 2003 op-ed piece her husband wrote claiming the administration manipulated intelligence on Iraq.

Bill Pohlad's River Road is financing. Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road and Jerry and Janet Zucker of Zucker Prods. are producing the film.

The film, based on Plame's memoir, is filming in New York and the Middle East.

Charhi is managed by Flutie Entertainment.
