Do you like movies about gladiators?
Hollywood is betting you do.
There are a trio of sword-and-sandal epics in the works, including a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning 2000 movie Gladiator and a reboot of Starz’ groundbreaking TV series Spartacus.
The curious surge of Ancient Rome titles in the pipeline seems to be purely coincidental, but it also makes sense given that studios have been searching for the next genre title that might break out — particularly since the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones — and given the revival of another muscular old-time Hollywood genre, the Western, following the explosive popularity of Yellowstone. Each project has roots in a different take on the material, and two of the projects had major casting news within the past week.

Believe it or not, this is a first look for a film that isn't hitting the fall festival circuit, but it's probably a safe bet to show up at Sundance in January. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken, Imogen Poots, Jeremy Northam and Liraz Charhi, "A Late Quartet" chronicles the elder leader of a famed string quartet who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, throwing the future of the renowned group into question. As the quartet struggles to stay together on the eve of their 25th season, the group’s once-tempered egos and lusts violently collide. Co-written by director Yaron…...

We first heard about the indie drama A Late Quartet last year, when Ethan Hawke was cast in the lead. Things have changed a bit, but possibly for the better: the cast now includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken. Yaron Zilberman is directing A Late Quartet soon, and Ethan Hawke, once announced for a lead role [1], has had to drop out. But he's been replaced by Philip Seymour Hoffman, which to me is a win. Catherine Keener, previously rumored, has been confirmed as well, and after a brief turn as rumored cast members, Christopher Walken and Imogen Poots have also signed on for parts. Jeremy Northam is on board, too. The director co-wrote with Seth Grossman, and the story follows "a quartet whose members have performed together for 25 years and have to adjust to one of them retiring due to Parkinson’s disease." The character Hawke was...

The four actors have been set to star in A Late Quartet, an independent film from writer/director Yaron Zilberman. Shooting will start later this month in New York. Hoffman, Keener, Northam and Walken will play members of a world famous string quartet. They struggle to stay together on the eve of their 25th anniversary, with illness, ego and lust among the factors that threaten to tear them apart. Imogen Poots and Liraz Charhi also star. Zilberman directs from a script he wrote with Seth Grossman. Zilberman will produce with partner Tamar Sela through their Opening Night Productions banner. Vanessa Coifman, David Faigenblum, Emanuel Michael and Mandy Tagger are also producing. Concept Entertainment, Spring Pictures and Unison Films are the companies behind the film. Rko Pictures will distribute with its chief, Ted Hartley, among the exec producer roster. Zilberman directed the 2004 documentary Watermarks, about an Austrian female swim team from the 1930s.

The final pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place for the indie drama "A Late Quartet." Following our exclusive reports last week of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener joining the film, an official press release has confirmed their involvement as well as the rest of the players for the forthcoming picture. The more you agree with Fair Game politically, the more it will work for you. As a liberal myself, Doug Liman’s story of the Valerie Plame affair succeeded in getting me angry. The film does not take an unbiased approach but that is Ok considering the story it’s telling. However even if you agree with the film’s message, the film still has to work on it’s own as a movie and Fair Game definitely does. It is a taut, intense, smart, and sometimes harrowing political thriller following the days that led up to the bombing of Iraq and it’s aftermath. The film get’s strong performances from it’s two leads, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.

Top critics gave new Sean Penn, 'Fair Game' movie positive reviews. Summit Entertainment released their new drama flick "Fair Game" into theaters today and the top movie critics gave it some really positive reviews with mostly A and B ratings. The movie stars: Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi, and Nicholas Sadler. Ty Burr at the Boston Globe gave it a C rating. He said, "a strident, condescending Hollywood melodrama." Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B. He said, "unusually bold for a fictionalization based on real events." Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it a B. He said, "it's an absorbing thriller honoring its subjects without making them saints." Owen Gleiberman at Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+. Chicago – The key line in “Fair Game,” a distillation of Valerie Plame’s outing as a CIA operative in 2003, is intoned by character actor Bruce McGill, in a scene reminiscent of the “Mr. X” moment in the “JFK” movie. Pointing to the White House and the Bush Administration, he simply says, “there are the most powerful men in the history of the world.”

Naomi Watts gives an electric performance in the true story as Valerie Plame, a pawn in a political game where the truth is countered by the destruction of career and reputations. Sean Penn is her husband Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador who dares to take on the prickly Bush Administration by countering the president’s State of the Union Address and his infamous words, “The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

Here’s another new inernational poster for Fair Game via Impa which sees Naomi Watts working for the CIA only to find herself set up. From the trailer we saw a few weeks ago, it would appear she then spends most the movie trying to clear her name.
Fair Game also stars Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi, Nicholas Sadler and is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).
Synopsis: As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie Plame leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat Joe Wilson, is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a firestorm of controversy.

A brand new trailer has been released for Fair Game, the latest movie to star Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi and Nicholas Sadler. Yahoo debuted the trailer last night for the movie which is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity). "You have no idea what we can or can not do."
Here's the first trailer for a pretty typical plain looking international thriller from director Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith). No joke, it seems like every bit of dialogue that we hear in this trailer we've heard before in other movies like this. It's almost like a parody of the type of movie it's supposed to be. This is surprising because the movie has a solid cast of actors which includes Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich,Liraz Charchi and Nicholas Sadler.

Enjoying another day of the Cannes International Film Festival, Naomi Watts was spotted at the “Fair Game” photo call today (May 20).
The “King Kong” hottie hobnobbed with Liraz Charhi outside the Palais des Festivals, sporting a lavender dress.
As for her work with Woody Allen in “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” Naomi says she was nervous collaborating with the legendary writer/director.
“I had heard he doesn’t like to talk much and it can be difficult to know what he wants. He was shy at first but after that he was charming to work with. He’s very entertaining. It’s true he doesn’t yell or say when he’s happy with a scene, he just moves on. Usually between scenes you go back to your trailer to catch up on email or make a call but not on this movie. I didn’t want to miss a single Woody moment.

Actress Liraz Charhi joins Naomi Watts in the new feature Fair Game, from director Doug "The Bourne Identity" Liman, focusing on real-life CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. Watts will play Plame, with Sean Penn as her husband ambassador Joseph Wilson. Based on a memoir by Plame, Charhi takes the role of 'Sawsan', an Iraqi doctor in Cleveland that Plame sent undercover to Baghdad to gather intelligence on a nuclear program in exchange for bringing Sawsan's brother over to the Us. The movie will reveal how Plame's 'secret agent' status was compromised by a strategic leak from the last Republican administration, in retaliation for a 2003 article her husband wrote claiming the Us government manipulated intelligence on Iraq...

Earlier today we wrote about the news that Israeli actress Liraz Charhi had been added to the cast of Fair Game, the Doug Liman-directed movie about outed CIA operative Valerie Plame. And the casting news just keeps coming-- we've been told that Noah Emmerich has also joined the cast, and will star in the film alongside Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. The press release doesn't say who the Little Children and Pride and Glory actor will be playing, or whether he'll join the shoot in the Middle East or keep filming back home. In the film Watts will be playing Plame, the CIA agent whose secret identity was revealed as an effort of the Bush White House to get back at her husband, Joseph Wilson (Penn), who had been critical of the administration's efforts to start war in Iraq.

Doug Liman's Fair Game, the story of CIA operative Valerie Plame and the massive fallout that occurred when a member of the Bush administration revealed her identity, has been underway filming in New York for a while now. But now that the production has moved over to the Middle East, a new cast member is jumping on board. Liraz Charhi, an Israeli actress, will play Sawsan, the Iraqi doctor who was living in Cleveland when Plame asked her to go undercover in Baghdad. THR doesn't specify exactly where they're filming in the Middle East, but we can be pretty safe in assuming it's not Baghdad. You probably wouldn't recognize Charhi from anything-- most of her credits come from Israeli television and one hit Israeli film. But hey, for your fourth acting role, acting alongside Naomi Watts (as Plame) and Sean Penn (as husband Joe Wilson) ain't bad!

Liraz Charhi has been cast in "Fair Game," the Doug Liman-directed drama about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. Naomi Watts already has been cast as Plame. Sean Penn plays her husband, ambassador Joseph Wilson.
The Israeli actress will play the fictional Sawsan, an Iraqi doctor in Cleveland whom Plame sends undercover to Baghdad to gather intelligence on Saddam Hussein's nuclear program in exchange for bringing her brother to the U.S.
The movie centers on how Plame's status was compromised because of a leak from the Bush administration, allegedly in retaliation for a 2003 op-ed piece her husband wrote claiming the administration manipulated intelligence on Iraq.
Bill Pohlad's River Road is financing. Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road and Jerry and Janet Zucker of Zucker Prods. are producing the film.
The film, based on Plame's memoir, is filming in New York and the Middle East.
Charhi is managed by Flutie Entertainment.
