Rob Riggle as Frank West? That was all that I needed to know to be sold on seeing Dead Rising: Watchtower. Never mind the fact its based on one of the best zombie games of the last console generation – though we all know Left4Dead was The multiplayer zombie game – with a tongue in cheek story that played on the tropes of the genre, especially those found in the films of George A. Romero (after all, the first game was set in a mall!)
Dead Rising: Watchtower follows Chase Carter (Metcalfe), a reporter trying to make it big – but the pursuit of his career-defining story leads him into the heart of a zombie-infested warzone.

The countdown has begun to Whistler’s 14th annual cinematic celebration. The Whistler Film Festival (Wff) returns December 3 to 7, 2014 and with just 16 weeks to go, the Festival is proud to offer a sneak peek at the first round of confirmed films and industry program highlights.
Located in North America’s premiere destination mountain resort, the Whistler Film Festival combines an international film competition with a screen-based industry Summit to address the ever-evolving landscape of the digital age. The Festival hosts filmmaking luminaries for an intimate, five-day program featuring up to 90 original films from Canada and around the world, including filmmaker tributes, special events and industry initiatives. Recognized by filmmakers and film lovers alike as one of Canada’s most important showcases for film, Wff is a place where artists are celebrated, audiences are inspired, new ideas are discussed and business opportunities are solidified.
Wff’s Director of Programming and industry veteran Paul Gratton has this to say about the 2014 lineup: "The Whistler Film Festival continues to be a must-attend event for hip, young film buffs and emerging filmmakers, and we are pleased to carve out our own unique niche by offering an impressive selection of Canadian premieres. This year's titles will cast a wide net in terms of subject matter, and our Summit will complement our film programming by addressing key challenges and opportunities facing the industry this year. Wff will have something for everyone.”
The Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia celebrates its 11th anniversary this year offering the second largest cash film festival prize for a Canadian film in the country, with additional awards for Best Performance, Best Screenwriting and Best Direction.
Opening the Borsos competition this year will be the World Premiere of Cameron Labine’s BC filmed comedy "Mountain Men" starring Chace Crawford and Tyler Labine as estranged brothers who journey to their family cabin in the middle of winter. When the cabin accidentally burns to the ground, what started as a fun weekend quickly goes from bad to worse. The brothers find themselves fighting for survival as they perilously try to find their way down the mountain, all while rehashing family memories and challenged by sibling rivalry.
The breathtaking scenery of Nova Scotia is showcased in Wff's second Borsos competition film, the Western Premiere of "Relative Happiness" directed by first-time, female feature filmmaker Deanne Foley. Starring Australian actress Melissa Bergland and Wff alumni Aaron Poole, the romantic comedy tells the story of feisty but somewhat oversized bed and breakfast owner Lexie Ivy, who is tasked with finding a date to her sister’s wedding.
Other confirmed films include the World Premiere of the hilarious mockumentary "After Film School," by Vancouver filmmaker Joel Ashton McCarthy, who enlisted the help of over 100 local volunteers and featured original music from local musicians. It asks the question of young filmmakers everywhere, “What happens after film school?” The answer is a movie within a movie: "High School Shootings: The Musical."
"The Cocksure Lads Movie," also having its World Premiere at WFF14, is a fun musical in the style of Cliff Richards about a British boy band that travels to Toronto for a gig, only to split up hours after landing. Directed by Murray Foster, a former member of band Moxy Fruvous, the film features songs written by Murray over a twenty-year period in honor of his love for 1960s Britpop.
Canadian premieres include the comedy thriller "What an Idiot" from Vancouver husband-wife duo Peter and Julia Benson, featuring the story of a man pretending to be gay to get near his hot, new boss at work, and documentary "That Guy Dick Miller," chronicling the life of veteran character actor Dick Miller, which had its World Premiere at South by Southwest this year.
Wff’s World Documentary Competition will include "The Backward Class," the 2014 Audience Award winner at Hot Docs that follows a class of poverty-stricken children from India’s “untouchable class” as they are separated from their families for more than 13 years to receive an education, facing the pressure to succeed while preparing for college entrance exams.
Wff’s Family program we will feature the 24th film in Rock Demers’ Tales for All series,"The Outlaw League," about a group of scruffy kids who want to turn the local junkyard into a baseball diamond. The film broke box office records in New Brunswick and will be a Western Canadian premiere.
Wff’s second From the Vault program will feature three newly discovered long-lost shorts "Cold Comfort, Insomnia is Good for You" and "Dearth of a Salesman" -- from comic legend Peter Sellers, which played 1950s UK theater screens as an addition to the main programming.
Other official selections featuring wilderness settings include the Western Canadian premiere of family drama "We Were Wolves" by director Jordan Canning, about two brothers who reconcile at the family cabin following the death of their father, and "Backcountry" directed by Adam MacDonald and starring Rookie Blue actress Missy Peregrym in a true story about two campers who are viciously attacked by a black bear. The bear attack footage was shot in Squamish, BC.
Western Canadian premiere "I Put a Hit on You" stars Aaron Ashmore and Sara Canning as a separated couple who team up to stop the hit man she accidentally hired to kill him and comes to Wff from the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival. The BC Premiere of dark comedy-thriller "Ally Was Screaming" directed by Jeremy Thomas and starring Camille Sullivan follows a couple of buddies who discover a late friend's winning multi-million dollar lottery ticket and how they deal with what stands in the way of their prize. Both will be featured in Wff’s Discoveries strand.
These films are but a few tantalizing offerings that represent what audiences can expect from this year's exciting lineup. Wff is still seeking submissions for its 14th edition. Canadian and International filmmakers are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres by the extended deadline of September 19.
Wff’s Summit will feature three concentrated days of business programs and networking events where industry-goers can delve into cinema’s converging fields of art, technology and commerce. Offering in-depth conversations, lively debates and critical insight into a broad range of issues vital to the international and domestic film communities while addressing crossing borders and platforms in the digital age, Whistler is the place to be, connect and deal.
Project development programs include Wff’s Feature Project Lab, an intense four-day business and marketplace immersion experience for six Canadian producers, which focuses on strengthening dramatic feature projects from script to screen by facilitating feedback, collaboration and investment in film projects that have Us and international appeal.
Writer-producer teams are invited to submit their feature film story ideas for this year's third consecutive China Canada Gateway for Film® Script Competition, a dynamic pitching competition designed to stimulate international financing for Canadian creators to participate in a China-Canada co-production. The competition will introduce up to 12 experienced writer/producer teams to Chinese studios with production financing on the table for three selected projects.
New for 2014 , the Wff Praxis Screenwriters Lab is an intense five-day workshop presented by the Whistler Film Festival and Praxis Centre for Screenwriters. Designed to advance Canadian creative talent, the Lab focuses on strengthening feature length scripts by facilitating feedback and mentorship from veteran screenwriters and story editors. Up to eight screenwriters will be invited to participate.
Wff’s Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship , a creative and business immersion experience designed to advance Canadian Aboriginal creative talent, focuses on strengthening short script projects by facilitating feedback from mentors who are successful and well-respected members of the Canadian film community. Up to four Aboriginal filmmakers from British Columbia will be invited to participate in the 2014 Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship with a call for applications opening September 1.
The Mppia Short Film Award, a partnership initiative of Mppia, Creative BC, and the Whistler Film Festival for BC filmmakers , returns for its 8th edition as part of Wff’s ShortWork Lab, providing one filmmaker with the opportunity to develop his/her directing career by realizing a unique creative vision in a short film project. Sometimes I wish movies came with a definitive “Stop” button, like Dave Chappelle’s “Wrap It Up” device. I’ve seen too many directors botch their film’s ending by thinking audiences want to be barraged by as many twists as possible, prolonging the inevitable. M. Night Shyamalan has polluted the minds of so many up-and-coming writers/directors who cram twists and turns in the clunkiest of fashions, because for some reason society has interpreted The Sixth Sense as “Give Me All Of The Plot Twists!” Here’s the problem – twists only work when monumentally awesome. A twist that remains hidden for ninety minutes then blows an audience member’s mind Scanners style is worthy of such manipulation, but the overly foreshadowed reveal coming too-little-too-late has become absolutely laughable – and unfortunately that’s what curses Death Do Us Part. Ok, sorry, Way more absurdity destroys this slasher wanna-be, but a...

What could Blanda Eggenschwiler and Ashley Greene possibly have in common? Oh, yeah—Joe Jonas. If you've seen one SyFy Channel Original Movie, then you know what to expect from all of them. The simple formula consists of a couple of familiar television or genre actors, some type of otherworldly threat or attack, and some budget special effects that aren't quite as bad as what we get with The Asylum's movies. However, they still don't quite live up to the expectations set forth by years of watching films crafted with the help of Ilm.
Earth's Final Hours is no different except for a premise that isn't quite as hard to swallow as an alien attack or over-used as a giant asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Don't get me wrong; matter from an asteroid figures into the story. It's just not the size we're used to from years of movies like Meteor, Armageddon, and Deep Impact.

The movie also stars 'Sgu Stargate Universe' hottie Julia Benson (below) as well as Zak Santiago, Aleks Paunovic, David Nykl, Samuel Patrick Chu, Madison Smith, Vanesa Tomasino and Anja Savcic. Check out the plot details below....

If you keep an eye on our Spotlight section you might recall that a few months ago we brought you articles about two indie movies for which funds were being raised by crowdsourcing. This week we received a new ‘concept’ trailer for one of those, The Ferret Squad, which we present below.
The Ferret Squad, which is still looking for funding, will be directed by Vancouver filmmaker Alison Parker, who previously shot a short film on a similar theme called Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale. That earlier production was about the friendship that develops between Jake Tyler (Connor Stanhope, who played a young Lex Luthor in Smallville) and a furry friend called Jasper after the boy’s mother dies.
Jake and Jasper’s small but accomplished cast also features Andrew Jackson (whose credits include Stargate Sg-1, Andromeda, Warehouse 13...

A gamma ray burst or a star going nova has not been done yet.

Amanda Tapping in the fourth season of Stargate: Atlantis.
Amanda Tapping, Colin Ferguson, Lou Diamond Phillips, Ryan Robbins and Allison Mack will be among a host of television stars attending a gala in Vancouver on September 24th to raise funds for research into Hunter Syndrome.
The condition, also known as Mps II, is a genetic disorder that affects children. It substantially reduces their lifespan and afflicts them with a variety of degenerative symptoms that increase in severity with age. Currently there is no cure for the rare syndrome, which is estimated to affect around 2000 children worldwide.
The aim of the 1st Annual Once Upon a Cure Gala is to raise funds and awareness for research into ways to reverse the disease. This research is already yielding promising new treatments and a seven-year-old boy from North Vancouver recently became the first child in Canada to be given a new medication for the condition.

Kurt Wagner got a chance to interview Alain Huffman and Julia Benson about the end of Stargate Universe. The two of them express dismay that the series had to end without a proper conclusion, feeling the fanbase deserved a series finale if not another season. Despite the unfortunate cancellation, they feel they had a good two seasons. The cast still keeps in touch even though they’ve all moved on to different projects.
Benson mentions that she’s doing a Syfy movie called Earth’s Final Hours. She and her husband are working on a half-hour comedy pilot for BBC. They’ll decide which of the many BBCs the show will air once the pilot is ready to be shopped around. Apparently, the two of them have a lot of great ideas and always have something they are working on. Sounds like they make a great couple creatively.

When it comes to dramatic movies, the trials of a sports athlete is pretty low on the totem pole of interesting subjects. Most of the time, sports movies are designed to show off the human spirit; the ability of a person to overcome whatever obstacles life puts in front of them to achieve their dream of playing sports, often with an emphasis on winning. The common thing to do, though, is to single out a disability that's a hindrance to the individual: honor, self-worth, pride, or dreams. Road to Victory uniquely makes it about the athlete's field performance being affected by his responsibility to other individuals.
Completed in 2007, it has a year's head start on Aronofsky's The Wrestler on the premise of a fledging athlete developing a turbulent relationship with a stripper, and the body-use themes that arise from that pairing. Writer and director Mike Reilly himself stars as Elliot,...

Stargate Universe is a bizarrely controversial show, and if you need proof, just take a look at my initial review of the show. Somewhere in the realm of “mildly positive, but hopeful,” the review doesn’t exactly oversell the show, but there are few comments that aren’t from “Stargate Purisits” taking shots at the changes in format and tone. Not that there aren’t plenty of reasons to avoid the show without Stargate baggage, but Sci-Fi is a genre of fans who throw themselves into things, and are often rather easy to annoy.
While some of my initial concerns were dealt with as the show continued, there are many ways in which this incarnation of Stargate still hasn’t, in my estimation, gotten out of its own way. I am the wrong guy to try to sell cheap, simplistic melodrama to, especially when it is slapped into a show...

Black Orpheus (Criterion) Winner of the 1959 Best Foreign Film Oscar and that same year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes, Black Orpheus is a modern-day update of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice reset in 20th century Brazil during Carnival in Rio. Director Marcel Camus offers up a visual feast with some of the decade’s most ravishing color cinematography. A classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Archival interviews with Camus and actress Marpessa Dawn; Interviews with Brazilian cinema scholar Robert Stam, jazz historian Gary Giddins, and Brazilian author Ruy Castro; Documentary on the film; Trailer. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
The Last Song (Touchstone) Sentimental adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ (by Sparks and Jeff Van Wie) sentimental novel about a father and daughter attempting to repair their damaged relationship. Greg Kinnear, as the dad in question, comes off best, while tween sensation Miley Cyrus...

This review may contain spoilers. There is a slight flavor of a horror movie in this episode, which includes a steamy sex scene, some blood and violence, a dead person, and the feeling that something was not quite right. From the first scene between Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith) and Lt. James (Julia Benson), they definitely got our attention. Certain people onboard Destiny kept having bad things happen to them. Volker (Patrick Gilmore) suffered from claustrophobia, Scott saw his son, Sgt. Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) suspected another conspiracy takeover, and James killed Scott except none of it ever happened. When Scott walked into the infirmary, the look on James. face said it all as she and the viewer questioned what was real. It turns out that there was an insect like a tick that ...

Well, week 17 has come and gone on the good starship Destiny, hurtling away on it’s 5 bazillion year mission to nowhere. In this episode, entitled Pain, it’s time to call the Orkin man. Lets hope it’s not bed bugs, because a certain mattress is going to be getting some extended use not covered in the warranty. Let’s just see if the last episode was a one shot pants full or if the writers got it all packed back together for this weeks extravaganza . Well it opened up awesomely that’s for sure. I for one completely approve of the amount of screen time that Julia Benson, playing the spicy Lieutenant James, is getting on the show. She’s smart, a good actor and crazy beautiful. Even in Low Def I could see that Matt and Vanessa were finding something to do aboard the Destiny besides clean their weapons.

This review may contain spoilers. When Destiny jumped into Ftl leaving behind Eli (David Blue), Chloe (Elyse Levesque), and Lt Scott (Brian J. Smith), they did not realize that someone tampered with the drives. Threatening their ability to make it to the next galaxy, Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Col. Young (Louis Ferreira) must figure out how to fix it and help the crew onboard survive. To help with the fix, they used the stones to bring scientist Amanda Perry (Kathleen Munroe) on to Destiny to help Rush figure it out. Although Lt. James (Julia Benson) tried to switch with Amanda, she could not maintain it after her last switch with one of the aliens. Dr. Camile Wray (Ming-Na) ended up switching into Amanda.s quadriplegic body, but quickly used the opportunity to go home to spend time ...

Julia Benson, the apparent owner of those distracting boobs from last weeks Sgu episode “Darkness” comments on the shots that have us all in a bit of a state. I had her down as Julia Anderson for some reason. I guess the network connections between my brain hemispheres are degrading faster than I had hoped. My sincere apologies to Julia. Julia’s comment on the episode and the aftermath is long and intelligent. I’m not sure where I stand on the whole boob issue other than to say that she looked wild and proud and smart to me and so therefore I have much respect.

The winner of ABC's reality show, True Beauty, was announced tonight. Unfortunately, the show's ratings have been anything but beautiful. Will there be a second year?
True Beauty comes from executive producers Tyra Banks (America's Next Top Model) and Ashton Kutcher (Punk'd). In the show, ten gorgeous contestants live together in a house in Los Angeles and take part in weekly modeling challenges. The players believe that they're being judged on their looks but in fact their inner beauty is being secretly tested as well.
The attractive contestants are Julia Anderson, Chelsea Bush, Billy Jeffrey, Laura-Leigh, C.J. Miller, Ashley Michaelson, Joel Rush, Hadiyyah-lah Sa'id, Monique Santiago, and Ray Seitz. Judging them are host Vanessa Minnillo, model Cheryl Tiegs, and fashion expert Nol Marin.
The TV show debuted on January 5th to 7.6 million viewers and a 3.2/8 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. That put Beauty in second place for its...
