I was probably one of about seven people that wasn’t enamoured with Wolf Cop. There’s a lot of love for it, but I just didn’t have the same blast with it that everyone else seemed to. That’s not to say it’s a bad film, I was mid festival, severely sleep deprived and in need of a good rest. So, when offered Lowell Dean’s latest piece, SuperGrid, I was eager to see if this was a one off. Seems that yes, it was.

Werewolf movies can either be a howlin’ good time like Adrián García Bogliano’s Late Phases, taking a bite out of softer genre efforts, or they can be like David Hayter’s Wolves, a mainstream safety net that makes you want to cuddle a werewolf instead of run away in fear. Werewolves can be horrifying, menacing beasts, or overgrown house pets, spanning a varied spectrum of physical embodiments from humanistic (Wer) to cartoony (Wolves), which is why I have to commend filmmaker Lowell Dean on creating a werewolf movie full of gore, hilarity, and a werewolf police officer who’s more of a comic book hero than furry mythical creature. WolfCop is “Dirty Harry only hairier,” and his first case is every bit a bonkers B-Movie revival that midnight movie fans pray for – littered with fairytale references and a little animalistic cavorting for all you furry exhibitionists out there!

After a night of downing a couple too many drinks, you might wake up the following morning with a hammering headache and one thought dominating your mind: "What happened last night?" In writer/director Lowell Dean's latest film, alcoholic police officer Lou Garou ponders that question when he notices the pentagram carved into his chest one morning. Talk about a rude awakening. Things get hairy, bloody, and very funny from there for Lou and company in Dean's WolfCop, a Canadian horror comedy that's a welcome addition to the werewolf sub-genre. With WolfCop now available on Blu-ray and DVD, we caught up with writer/director Lowell Dean to discuss WolfCop’s ’80s influences, casting Leo Fafard in the titular role based on his performance as a lycanthrope in a music video, the upcoming WolfCop sequel, and much more.

Contest: Win a WolfCop Prize Pack, Including a Blu-ray Copy, Flask, Signed Poster, Comic Book & More
Imagine if high school student Scott Howard from Teen Wolf grew up, traded his letter jacket for a police uniform, and became a barely functioning alcoholic. Sound interesting? Then you'll likely dig Lowell Dean’s WolfCop, a creature feature with a wicked sense of humor that's packed with blood-soaked practical effects. Today, Image Entertainment unleashed WolfCop on Blu-ray and DVD, and to celebrate the release, they've provided us with two prize packs to give away to a couple of lucky Daily Dead readers. The grand prize contains a Blu-ray copy of the film, a flask (to go with the bottoms up spirit of Lou Garou), a signed poster featuring WolfCop sprawled out on his own human skin, and more.
"Officer Lou Garou isn’t the best cop in small-town Woodhaven – in fact, he’s probably the worst. He mostly just looks to avoid anything that could possibly interfere with his goal of getting wasted.

This weekend has been dubbed “Werewolf Weekend”, as I have not one, but two movies to review, that just both happen to be werewolves. I wasn't sure what to expect, when I was asked if I wanted to review WolfCop. Any werewolf movie immediately has my attention, but this just had 'cheesy schlock film' written all over it. It just raised a whole lot of questions in my mind, and I wasn't certain I'd be able to give it a good review, let alone finish the thing.
However, WolfCop is a perfect example of why you shouldn't judge too harshly, before giving something a chance. Was it cheesy? Absolutely. Was it schlocky?...

The brains of an alcoholic cop meet the body of a ferocious werewolf in horror comedy WolfCop. Here’s Rob’s review…
Horror and comedy can be a difficult balance, with countless parodies and pastiches continuing to fall by the wayside every time Halloween rolls around. However, when it’s done right, this sub-genre can have absolutely astounding results. Since Shaun Of The Dead, we’d argue that no-one’s quite perfected the formula, which made us unavoidably sceptical about WolfCop. But how does this latest addition to the aeons of horror comedy history hold up?
Surprisingly well, to an extent. At certain points WolfCop is an absolute joy for fans of both gore and guffaws, with old school practical effects and a pun-laden script combining winningly for an enjoyable sub-80 minute romp.
The plot here is relatively simple – Leo Fafard’s alcoholic cop Lou gets embroiled in a supernatural...

After premiering earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Image Entertainment acquired WolfCop for Us distribution and it has been revealed that they plan to release the movie in early 2015. Blu-ray.com reports that WolfCop will be released to home video on January 20th, 2015. “It’s not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn.
Crime scenes seem oddly familiar. Lou’s senses are heightened, and when the full moon is out, he’s a rage-fueled werewolf. Wolfcop is one cop’s quest to become a better man…

Dark comedy is a difficult thing to get right. The humor must be daring enough to go to uncompromising places, but mean and sardonic jokes only work if they are funny. The issue with jokes that aim to be savage and nasty is that they are also easy to make: it is simple to poke fun at someone in a vulgar way if the humor depends on humiliating that target. It is too simple for a screenwriter to whip up a joke that emasculates a male character – for instance, one making fun of their lack of sexual prowess – and put it down on the page. Similarly, it also demands little effort to turn the person who is making that crude joke into a boorish stereotype.

I remember seeing the bright neon 80’s style action-movie poster for WolfCop a few months ago and I immediately, without knowing any details, wanted to see the film, and I finally had the opportunity recently for this Frightfest review.
Lowell Dean (13 Eerie) writes and directs what I can only really refer to as a “Canadian werewolf comedy action horror film”, yeah, one of those now exists.
Now, immediately this felt like a television production, and that’s not me putting this down, but the opening credits, the style in which the film is shot, and the fast-paced comedic tone felt like a modern television comedy horror show. Within the first two minutes we’ve had boobs, beer, blood and graffiti, and the fun has only just begun.

Imagine if high school student Scott Howard from Teen Wolf grew up, became a functioning alcoholic, and got a job as a cop in a small town. Sound interesting? If so, then you might like writer/director Lowell Dean’s film, WolfCop, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and has just been acquired by Image Entertainment.
Image Entertainment has gained all Us rights to WolfCop, which was presented by CineCoup upon its release. After a positive reception at Cannes, CineCoup in May announced a sequel, revealing that production on WolfCop 2 would begin in the fall with Lowell Dean returning to direct.

The Canadian film industry has produced dozens of amazing, low-budget horror, science fiction, sexploitation, action and lowbrow comedy films over the years. There was a huge boost during the 1970s and ’80s, when generous tax laws helped start the careers of directors like David Cronenberg, Bob Clark and Ivan Reitman. Canada’s rich history of exploitation films stretches decades and thankfully it isn’t slowing down. And now fans of these low-budget grindhouse releases should enjoy this. A trailer has been released for WolfCop, an upcoming Canadian horror/comedy from writer/director Lowell Dean. This is the first film chosen for production from the CineCoup Film Accelerator with a plot that revolves around an alcoholic small town cop named Lou, who transforms into a werewolf after being cursed. It doesn’t seem very original, nor scary, but the trailer does promise some big laughs. The film stars Jesse Moss, Amy Matysio,...

Wolfcop is a horror comedy from CineCoup. This title is completed and the film will release in select theatres June 6th, 2014. Wolfcop deals with an alcoholic cop, who is transformed into a hairy beast through a Satanic ritual. The film is from director Lowell Dean (13 Eerie). Also, the film stars Leo Fafard (Grace), Amy Matysio (Stranded), Jonathan Cherry and Sarah Lind. A preview of the film's launch is here. Director Dean gives more backstory on the character Wolfcop. Dean says of this werecreature: “my vision for Wolfcop was always somewhere between monster and anti-hero.” As well, Dean has taken some of the inspiration for the character from classic creatures of the past "I wanted the look to be an homage to the practical-effects werewolves of the past, characters like Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolfman and Michael J. Fox as Teen Wolf -- but with a violent twist -- hence, the ridiculously large claws.

Title: Stranded Director: Roger Christian Starring: Christian Slater, Brendan Fehr, Amy Matysio, Michael Therriault Rote, declamatory representations of paranoia, fear, delusion and counter-attack get cycled through in “Stranded,” a low-budget science-fiction actioner that unfolds on a heightened emotional pitch which doesn’t leave much room for intrigue or escalating tension. Starring Christian Slater, the futuristic movie is set on the lunar surface, but it lacks the overall virtuosity of “Moon,” the visual elegance of the flawed but interesting “Europa Report,” or even the outlandish lunacy of “Apollo 18.” In short, it’s a paycheck project for all involved, and nothing that those outside of diehard genre completists need waste their time on. Seeing movies like Stranded makes one appreciate something like Alien even more. The former is a dime a dozen, while the latter is all too rare. Obviously Ridley Scott’s masterpiece proves what is possible despite a small cast and limited budget and locations. Too often though what we get is something like Stranded, derivative and unimaginative and a total waste of time.
The movie wastes no time getting started. A little more setup might have helped. After being informed that the action takes place on a moon base, a sudden meteor shower damages communication systems and thrusts the four crew members into an emergency situation. Said crew consists of Gerard (Christian Slater), Dr. Krauss (Brendan Fehr), Ava (Amy Matysio), and Bruce (Michael Therriault).
