The circumstances of his death remain mysterious until today. He went for a walk on February 13, 2013 on the frozen Gulf of Finland and never came back. A search for him was assembled but to no prevail. His body was discovered on July 22, 2013 in the water near the city Lomonosov. Until today it is not clear how he died, possible crime, suicide or accident were not ruled out.
