Chicago – Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford seem like a pair of good guys in real life and the creator of their new show (Matt Nix of “Burn Notice”) has definitely been more-than-good in the past but their new action series, “The Good Guys” might be more correctly titled “The Mediocre Guys,” although that’s not quite as catchy.
Television Rating: 2.5/5.0
On “The Good Guys,” debuting tonight, May 19th, 2010 on Fox, Hanks and Whitford play a pair of Texan cops who are cut from the classic oil-and-water buddy comedy cloth. Hanks plays the buttoned-up Jack Bailey while Whitford plays the unbuttoned Dan Stark. Bailey longs for a more high-profile gig than chasing down stolen humidifiers while Stark barely lives a sober moment, more focused on his mustache grooming than anything else. Jenny Wade plays Assistant District Attorney Liz Traynor while Diana Maria Riva co-stars as Lt. Ana Ruiz.

I wanted to like Fox's new action-comedy The Good Guys. I really did. The series, which gets a sneak peak on Fox tonight before its official launch this summer, revolves around anachronistic police officer Dan Stark (The West Wing's Bradley Whitford) who acts as though he's the living embodiment of a 1970s TV cop show and is paired with by-the-book, ambitious younger officer Jack Bailey (Mad Men's Colin Hanks), who resents the fact that his promising career is being held back by this boozy, washed up hack. Created by Matt Nix (Burn Notice), The Good Guys could be fun, escapist fare but the first hour found it trying way too hard to please and the intentional quirkiness of the situation (look for Whitford's Dan to eat moldy cottage cheese and vomit!) often feels laborious and arrives with the subtlety of an anvil being dropped on our heads. Which is...

This Monday and Tuesday I'll be in Dallas, Texas to visit the set of The Good Guys, Matt Nix's (Burn Notice) new action comedy series on Fox starring Colin Hanks, Bradley Whitford and Bradley Whitford's mustache.
Whitford plays Dan Stark, a washed-up detective who spends most of his time drunk or re-hashing his glory days. Hanks is Jack Bailey, an ambitious, by-the-book detective, who gets stuck solving annoying petty theft cases that nobody else wants--with Stark as his partner.
I'll also get to chat with Jenny Wade, who plays Assistant D.A. Liz Traynor, and Diana Maria Riva, who has the enviable job of playing Stark and Bailey's boss, Lieutenant Ana Ruiz.
Have questions for creator Matt Nix, Hanks, Whitford or Whitford's mustache (which plays a bring role in the Good Guys promos, as you can see in the video below)? How about for the lovely Ms. Wade and Ms.

Fox is pulling out all the stops for its new police action comedy Code 58 starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks.
The show, from creator Matt Nix (USA’s Burn Notice), is getting a special preview spot before the final episodes of ratings powerhouse American Idol Wed. May 12 and May 19 at 8 Pm, the same time this season’s breakout Glee premiered in 2009.
Code 58 — Dallas police speak for a routine investigation — follows a young, ambitious and by-the-book detective Jack Bailey (Hanks) who’s snarky remarks and habit of undermining himself gets him relegated to the mundane petty crimes department. He is partnered with a boozy, former big-shot detective Dan Stark (Whitford) who spends most of his time rehashing his glory days.
Jack may not see it, but he has little chance of getting out of his situation: his knack for making enemies at the station has assured he is not going anywhere anytime soon.
