Tharun kumar was born and raised in Garden City Bangalore, India until he moved to Chennai right after his college days. He completed his schooling at Modern English High School in JP Nagar Bangalore. Tharun Kumar did series of small time jobs in real estate and even ran a video cassette library at the early days of his college days to take care of his family when his father left abandoning them. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the BHS college in Jayanagar 4th Block Bangalore. While he was studying he did a Diploma in Theatres at Abhinaya Taranga Bangalore before entering into Film Industry. In the early days of his career he tried his luck in Kannada Film Industry as he couldn't find good opportunities in 2007 he shifted to Chennai.
Later after meeting Tharun Gopi, director Tharun Gopi was impressed by Tharun Kumar's knowledge about cinema, he first gave him a chance to work as an assistant director. While working as an assistant director for Kaalai when there was an opportunity to cast Tharun Kumar as one of the main Villains in Kaalai (2008) it was Tharun Gopi who gave an opportunity to act.
Having come from a non-filmy background he started his film career as a Villain in Tarun Gopi's Tamil movie, Kaalai (2008) as Jeeva. Director Tarun Gopi changed his real name Sulile Kumar as Tharun Kshathriya, later his name was pronounced as Tharun Chatriya and Tarun Shatriya later to avoid confusion in 2015 he retained his original name as Sulile Kumar.
Tharun Kumar believes in getting recognised for his talent and similarly, in 2009 his portrayal as Dharma in critically acclaimed Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum (2009) directed by Rajamohan shot Tharun Kumar to instant fame, his down-to-earth personality, commitment and his aptitude for acting helped him gain wide recognition predominantly in the Tamil Film Industry.
In 2010 Tharun Kumar acted as an antagonist in Aanmai Thavarael (2011) directed by Kuzhandai Velappan which was later released in 2011 was very much appreciated. In 2010 Tharun Kumar did a North Madras character as Kasi in Sundar C. directorial Nagaram (2010) and Psychotic Villain in Markandeyan (2011) by Fefsi Vijayan, before playing the lead role in the romantic Drama Padam Parthu Kadhai Sol (2012).
Mayanginen Thayanginen (2012) Tharun Kumar did a supporting role directed by S.T. Vendan, the movie received negative reviews. And Tharun Kumar did as a protagonist in much awaited investigative thriller Kandupidi Kandupidi directed by Ramsubbaraman which never saw a theatrical release.
In Thagaraaru (2013) movie which revolves around the lives of four friends - Saravanan (Arulnithi), Pazhani (Sulile Kumar) Senthil (Pawan), and Aarumugam (Aadukalam Murugadoss) who are orphans and lives in the city of Madurai directed by Ganesh Vinayak Tharun Kumar's character as local Madurai youth made him a much promising actor in the film industry and his popularity grew much higher when the film hit the box-office.
In the year 2017 Tharun Kumar (Sulile Kumar) debuted as a hero alongside Sonu Gowda in the Kannada film Maarikondavaru (2017) a compilation of three short stories of writer Devanur Mahadeva a Writer Teacher, directed by K. Shivarudraiah which bagged The Karnataka State Film Award for Second Best Film in 2015.
Having acted in a Tamil short film The Broken Tide (2017) along with Samyuktha Hornadu which revolves around troubled relationships, Tharun Kumar who wrote and directed this short film as a passion went on to win many Short Film festival awards.
Later he went on to work as a second lead along with Kishore Kumar G. in a period drama, Kalathur Gramam (2017) which was directed by Adwaithan and music composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
The horror film Dora (2017) by Dass Ramasamy with Nayanthara gave much a Celebrity status for the role he played as a Mukesh Yadav, a Bihari villain.
Santhana Devan (2018) filming is a Tamil action sports movie based on Jallikattu. Tharun Kumar (Sulile Kumar) is seen playing one of the prominent roles in the movie directed by Ameer Sultan and the movie cast includes Arya.
Kavaludaari (2019) Tharun Kumar (Sulile Kumar) did a supporting role as Lokesh in a Kannada-language neo-noir thriller film written and directed by Hemanth M. Rao.
After more than a decade long struggle Tharun Kumar bagged as a Hero in Tamil movie Thaen (2021), which gave him much awaited break and instant fame as a star, a 2021 Indian Tamil drama written and directed by Ganesh Vinayak was well appreciated and got critically acclaimed over film critics and audience. Tharun Kumar and Abarnathi feature in the lead roles.
The film narrates the tale of an uneducated young rural beekeeper facing seemingly unsurmountable challenges when his wife is diagnosed with a rare disease. The film was released on 19th March 2021 and received critical acclaim for its direction, theme and realistic performances by the lead actors
Alongside Asuran (2019), the film was the only other Tamil film screened at the Indian Panorama 2020 event in 51st International Film Festival of India, Goa. Thaen (2021) was selected for the 'Sri Sankaradoss Swamigal' Award for the Best Film of Puducherry State Government Award in 2021. For Thaen (2021) actor Tharun Kumar won Best Actor award at 11th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, 2021. Movie Thaen (2021) was officially selected and won many awards at many national and International film Festivals like 11th Pune International film festival, New Delhi film festival 2021, 8th Darbhanga International film festival, Lift-off Global Network Film festivals, International film festival of Manhattan 2020, Columbus International Film & Animation Festival 2021, Kansas City FilmFest International 2021 and others
